Every single time you hear any Tory MP speak you realise just how poor the education system at Oxford and Cambridge really is at present. They are neither intelligent nor particularly charismatic but simply got a position through knowing the right people. That pathway has left the country in its current state.
I would suggest that many Tories who’ve attended either university are prime examples of ‘grade inflation’ in action.

I wish I could say that it feels good that those people have been humbled, but the damage is so horrific.

After the mini budget, Philps was doing the rounds on all the talk shows and banging on about how good the tax cuts were going to be for growth and categorically ruled out the Government would do an u-turn on any of the tax cuts, he was blaming international pressures for the run on the pound. Now he's acting like he wasn't even part of that government, he was second in charge in the Treasury and was instrumental in that policy. Man has no shame.
He deliberately kept referring to these asylum seekers and refugees as illegal immigrants. They have internationally recognised legal rights. They only become illegal once their applications are denied and fail to return.
Yet even Labour mps are doing it. Almost all of them are and to me it seems a sign of the return of racism to politics. Was nice when it went away for a year or 2.

The uk has 135,000 refugees, Turkey has 3.7 million, Colombia has 2.5 million, Germany has 2.2 million. The uk takes in a very small number of refugees compared to other countries!

I hope that happens - we withdrew that facility some years back, which is why people come in boats, there's no legal route to apply to come here.

Seems unlikely our government would conveniently have an office at Sangatte, British governments always liked to make it as difficult as possible for people to apply.Sangatte did have a Red Cross Centre,so they might have done some of the work.

Politics isn’t about getting everything right, all of the time. To me, it’s about having the humility to accept that tough decisions need to be made, and that when they’re made incorrectly, then you acknowledge that and build from there.
On the one hand we’re told that “trust in politicians is of paramount importance” but if they won’t apologise because it’s an admission and recognition of failure, how do they ever expect to be trusted on anything?

No longer in the Dublin agreement due to Brexit . This agreement meant that member states shared the load equally and fairly . This issue has erupted since we came out of the EU

Dublin agreement was about processing asylum applications, and the responsibilities of member states in dealing with the application processes, while it is being processed.

A lot of the people come in and seek asylum from Syria without any need for it; well settled people who come for the free hosting. I agree that we should give asylum, but at least check thoroughly so that the most needy are benefiting and getting the help they deserve! I think that's the issue. Useless government.

Yeah a "bit of a cheek" to ask for basic human rights to be upheld and not get Victorian era diseases or be forced to sleep rough for the new crime of seeking saftey from war or slavery. The government are treating them like prisoners and the policing minister, who clearly knows better, doesn't even want to give them the same standard of living that prisoners are entitled to. Regardless the borders bill that these people have, supposedly and without trial violated, breaches UK and international law and shouldn't even be considered valid legislation.
The only reason there is such a backlog is because ministers are putting pressure on the home office to stall the asylum application process, because they don't want to be required to accept valid applications.
Ministers dont need to go up in expensive helicopters to understand the terrain - they could just use map.

@@junctionfilms6348 correct me if im wrong as I'm not here to argue but I thought that the processing stage was when the government determined if they are here legally or illegally? How do we know who is and isn't a rightful asylum seeker until we've processed them? Anyone who is processed and found to be not an asylum seeker should be removed but labelling anyone who crosses as illegal before we've even processed them seems wrong. If they are processed and found to not be in need chuck them out but I'm not okay with the government labelling those who have not yet been processed "illegal"
Fact is the Tories felt they were losing support tae UKIP and so they made a point of keeping racists happy by making immigration and Asylum seeking nearly impossible.
They've been pretty open about it. The thinking is if they make the process more difficult, it will make folk not want tae attempt it. This is why the human smuggling has grown.

He talked of Syrias Afghanistans and Ukraines refugees and kept saying the word "unnecessary" and i find myself partly in agreemeent, in as much as Britains involvement in the situations that caused the refugee crisis in multiple countries was unnecessary. The refugee crisis is the result of political and military misadventures over the last 2 decades and blaming the refugees for their plight is transparent to anyone with a critical eye that has been paying attention
I got to know tonnes of Syrian/Afghan/allsorts of refugees and what breaks my heart is they all had such a romantic notion of Britain. Quite glad none of them ended up here because it would have been shattered.

No GCSEs, no A Levels, no degree or experience of any kind.

But by doing that he's also admitting that he didn't have the guts to resign. Collective responsibility means that the entire government jointly and severally accepts responsibility for its decisions.

Many times he said they were illegal, not true. Many times he said that because they were in France and it's safe there then they can't come here, not true. Simply not agreeing that the accomodation was inhumane and we have better standards than elsewhere is just blatant disregard. Passing the entire blame onto others.
