    Every single time you hear any Tory MP speak you realise just how poor the education system at Oxford and Cambridge really is at present. They are neither intelligent nor particularly charismatic but simply got a position through knowing the right people. That pathway has left the country in its current state.

    It’s good that people are seeing through their BS. But years ago when a low proportion of the people was saying that this government would screw this country over, they were called loopy liberals, communists and snowflakes. I wish I could say that it feels good that those people have been humbled, but the damage is so horrific.

    I've been a Tory all my life and I'm embarrassed with this Government. I've also realised I was stupid for not questioning more thoroughly the Brexit arguments.     After the mini budget, Philps was doing the rounds on all the talk shows and banging on about how good the tax cuts were going to be for growth and categorically ruled out the Government would do an u-turn on any of the tax cuts, he was blaming international pressures for the run on the pound. Now he's acting like he wasn't even part of that government, he was second in charge in the Treasury and was instrumental in that policy. Man has no shame.

    The uk has 135,000 refugees, Turkey has 3.7 million, Colombia has 2.5 million, Germany has 2.2 million. The uk takes in a very small number of refugees compared to other countries!

      @@b62boom1 Sangatte was the notorious refugee camp, not sure if the immigration centre was there; there were two British immigration centres, one of which was in Nice I think. Seems unlikely our government would conveniently have an office at Sangatte, British governments always liked to make it as difficult as possible for people to apply.Sangatte did have a Red Cross Centre,so they might have done some of the work.

We already take less refugees than other comparable countries in Europe, and we should open a processing centre in France and make fair decisions. It's only a problem because they want to maintain a siege mentality in the population.

    I’m far from an academic, merely a casual observer, but why do these people have such an aversion to apologising?
    Politics isn’t about getting everything right, all of the time. To me, it’s about having the humility to accept that tough decisions need to be made, and that when they’re made incorrectly, then you acknowledge that and build from there.
    On the one hand we’re told that “trust in politicians is of paramount importance” but if they won’t apologise because it’s an admission and recognition of failure, how do they ever expect to be trusted on anything?

      A lot of the people come in and seek asylum from Syria without any need for it; well settled people who come for the free hosting. I agree that we should give asylum, but at least check thoroughly so that the most needy are benefiting and getting the help they deserve! I think that's the issue. Useless government.

    Yeah a "bit of a cheek" to ask for basic human rights to be upheld and not get Victorian era diseases or be forced to sleep rough for the new crime of seeking saftey from war or slavery. The government are treating them like prisoners and the policing minister, who clearly knows better, doesn't even want to give them the same standard of living that prisoners are entitled to. Regardless the borders bill that these people have, supposedly and without trial violated, breaches UK and international law and shouldn't even be considered valid legislation.
    The only reason there is such a backlog is because ministers are putting pressure on the home office to stall the asylum application process, because they don't want to be required to accept valid applications.

      Of course, discerning and deciding and sifting through that mess, of who is legal and who is not, takes time.
      Meanwhile, they go into hotels in the UK.
      In France they are under cardboard. It is possible one motivation to battle to the UK, is they know they may likely get better conditions, than in France.
      To claim, what you claim he states, would be totally illogical and laughable, even for this Minister, as it makes no sense.
      Where is the stat that says 85% are upheld ? Perhaps that is not in reference to recent times ?

How do we know who is and isn't a rightful asylum seeker until we've processed them? Anyone who is processed and found to be not an asylum seeker should be removed but labelling anyone who crosses as illegal before we've even processed them seems wrong. If they are processed and found to not be in need chuck them out but I'm not okay with the government labelling those who have not yet been processed "illegal"

    He talked of Syrias Afghanistans and Ukraines refugees and kept saying the word "unnecessary" and i find myself partly in agreemeent, in as much as Britains involvement in the situations that caused the refugee crisis in multiple countries was unnecessary. The refugee crisis is the result of political and military misadventures over the last 2 decades and blaming the refugees for their plight is transparent to anyone with a critical eye that has been paying attention
