Tip #2 is actually really relevant nowadays because of how common of a mistake it is. Like in a web comic called "Homestuck" tons of characters are introduced, but are forgotten quickly because the story needs to focus on this other group of characters. This creates a huge problem if your favorite character gets forgotten, especially in the fanbase.
As a budding artist/novelist, I just wanted to say much much I appreciate this video series and how invaluable I find your insight. Your video on composition inspired me to pick up Brody's Ghost and you have been ordained my obi wan! Keep up the amazing content!
Thank you so much for making this series, Mark. It's my absolute favorite series on your channel, and quite honestly, to me, has been one of the most useful series of videos that I've encountered on youtube. So much appreciation!
Isaac Asimov, once admonished would be writers that if you want your supporting character to swing his large heavy tail at a bad guy in a fight on page 200, be sure the reader trips over that tail before page twenty, otherwise it will seem too Deus Ex Machina.
"Have them actually doing things in the story, you don't want them just being a sort of mouthpiece, someone who just gives information and does nothing else that's essential to the plot." *looks at Fi from LoZ Skyward Sword*
Great points about storytelling,. It explains why your stories are so tight and captivating. Thanks for sharing! And I'm looking forward to your new book!
Last one? Not the last one!? Thank you so much for this continuous series Mr. Mark Crilley. It's so helpful, and will continue to be. As well as your other tips & tricks.~ Thank you!
I just want to thank you for your videos! I only recently discovered your channel. I appreciate the practicality of your advice as well as your sense of humor. You come off as a person who just genuinely enjoys what he does and wants to help others out. Cheers! God bless!
Mark, could you do a video on hair movement? I know you're probably like "HAIR. MORE HAIR." But like how do you do hair in motion? Like a hair flip or a hand moving through it, or wet hair too. I'm really struggling with this with how much detail to put and where to out it.
My comic has a cast of 1 main character' 1 sidekick type character, and 6 supporting characters so I'll make sure to keep these tips in mind as I continue to write them!
Thank you Mark. This is very helpful as I am working on a story myself. And I really want to focus on the character development of main character and supporting characters. So later on, the death of them can be more impactful. Wanna make the readers cry.
Thanks a lot Mark Crilley. This is what I waited for, I am currently trying to figure out how my comic/manga/graphic novel have interesting characters since most of the story focuses on the main character.
Haha, in the ways I'm doing my plot and story, almost all of the characters are destined to die. It's fun to be an author, and it's also fun to keep your audience guessing who will die. Oh the joy! Oh, and great video Mark. I kinda stopped drawing stuff years ago but seeing you draw kinda makes me want to get back on to it.
Can you make a video describing what certain terms mean in drawing? Such as foreshortening? And thank you for all the great videos they sure make learning a lot easier.
AnimeloverKyoko Shimizu .. Foreshortening is drawing something in perspective. Making what's close to you look larger in respect to the part of the person or object that is further away. Example is if you draw an arm and hand that is pointing at you it will have been foreshortened in order to look correct in perspective with the hand large and the shoulder small in the near distance. I hope that makes sense 😊👍
AnimeloverKyoko Shimizu ...Best thing I can suggest is to buy yourself a 'learn to draw' book and you should find all the terms as well as the'how to's ' there 😊 or you can always Google 👍
I feel bad Markcrilley's channel is dying. He has been around helping artists for so long and still makes really amazing tutorials. It is very sad to see all the filth that's popular now, but really neat stuff like this is completely overshadowed.
I went run errands with my mom and I happened to find one of your books shout out to you because I love drawing anime and manga and it would really help me with my anatomy practice it's called Mastering Manga the books I bought I already skimmed through some pages and they are really Internet 😄
Can you give advice on characters who change from bad to good? I have this character who kind of works for the main antagonist, but I think I want that character to change sides at some point. I know it should be slow and progressive, but I don't know how to make that change.
love this, love you and your work so much!! i had to unsubscribe and re subscribe to get your notifications!!! oh well, least I'll get them now, even though you upload regularly.
The first rule is true unless your telling a tale about an insane person for instance I did a story about a man who only spoke to some manifestarions of his insanity that hunt him during the story
i have a story in my mind by your tips i am ready to plot it on paper mark there is a question which type of comic is best colourful or black an white like brody ghost plz answer me early
Mark Can you do a video on anatomy not just human but manga anatomy and if there are any others I have a lot of problem making the characters in panels look ... well “human”
I wanted to ask you or anyone in the comments to answer a question about coming up with panels/ pages when you come up with pages for your manga do you draw it by hand then scan to ink it digitally or do you do it all digitally? I'm asking cause I'm working on my own comic but I'm drawing it in a sketch book, then plan on scanning it to my laptop to work on it digitally so I wanted to ask you if that's a good idea or a bad idea to draw my comic in a sketch book (Master's Touch Fine Art studio is the brand I use)? Thanks i really would appreciate some feedback
I personally buy manga paper, draft it with blue pencil, then ink it and scan it into my computer. I use Clip Studio Paint as my digital app to edit my work, add paneling, dialogue, shading/tones, etc. I've found that to be the best way to go about making good looking manga with traditional art.
It can be either done by hand or digitally, what I’ve seen commonly by artists is they draw and ink it by hand ,and colour it on a digital program(if you want to do that), it’s also good for small touch ups.
If a machine or vehicle utilized by the characters plays a big part and developes it's own personality/role like a character, could introducing a new machine or vehicle in a similar manner do the same thing as a new side character?
Elsa is another example of a character who is more popular than the main protagonist. Some consider her the main character of Frozen, which goes to show how much she stole the show. Anna is actually the main character of Frozen when you think about it. She gets more screen time because she is the hero and has a clear goal. We follow her journey throughout the movie, while Elsa is only shown during important events. She's the one who found out Hans was a villain and she is the one who stopped him. But she didn't have ice powers so nobody cares lol
Can the same logic apply to making an rpg. (I mean duh it can but would a comics narrative standards apply to an RPG with gameplay and stuff.) I wanted to add supportive characters without making them annoying and more loveable
Okay I have a question for you. They lost their memory when the story began so how do I make them interesting without revealing too much about them yet?
d_man. sketchez Well, essentially you begin with a blank slate. Have the character's "new" personality be formed by things and events around them. For example, if there are a lot of people around them that they don't know and feel that they should, then that would likely be a distressing scenario and make the character a bit jumpy. This is a good time for character development, not only with the one who lost their memory, but those around them. Is there someone who was particularly close to this character that they forgot about? Maybe they'd be upset that they were forgotten and refuse to be of any help to the mc. I don't know your story personally, but I hope I can be of some help to you.
Hey Mark, I've tried to find a way to contact you, however, that doesn't seem to be possible other than here. I really need your help. I am writing a children's book to sell and raise money to build our new church in this community. I need to know how to draw 3 characters...a little boy about 4 years old, a little girl the same age and a Mom. However, I need to know how to draw the same characters in different poses with different expressions. Can you help me? Maybe just lead me in the right direction? I do not want the characters to be manga though just normal cartoon. Thank you so much and may God bless you!
Notification squad! I'm learning a lot from you, sensei! I "THINK" my drawings are improving by taking your advices.... I guess... 😂😂😂😅 I upload them here in my channel 🦊 Please teach me some more tips, sensei! ✍🏼👨🏼🎨🙇🙇🙇🙇
I used to not like her particularly as a child because she was a complex character. She wanted Woody to quit being Andy's toy and being selfish and I hated that part of her because I couldn't understand why she would act that way towards him. Now I get it but I don't relate to the story of Jessie.
Firstly, start calling it manga, not anime. Secondly, practice. A lot. Just copy characters, follow tutorials, make your own (however bad). Keep going. Draw at least 1 character a day, preferably as much as possible. Literally every waking moment (but don't sacrifice school, sleep, eating, exercise, etc.)
Tip #2 is actually really relevant nowadays because of how common of a mistake it is. Like in a web comic called "Homestuck" tons of characters are introduced, but are forgotten quickly because the story needs to focus on this other group of characters. I think this series is very helpful to me since I wanna write a comic as well. So THANK You
Go for it! :)
Thank you

Steve Urkel is also a supporting character who became more popular than the main cast.

Oh, and great video Mark. I kinda stopped drawing stuff years ago but seeing you draw kinda makes me want to get back on to it.
I just realised I made the perfect support character for my comic after watching this
Can't wait for the sequel to your awesome book, *"The Two Asparagus Method."*

April Marie Art Thank You! Do you know any other terms used in art? I'm pretty new to learning about those kinds of things.
AnimeloverKyoko Shimizu ...Best thing I can suggest is to buy yourself a 'learn to draw' book and you should find all the terms as well as the'how to's ' there 😊 or you can always Google 👍
April Marie Art Ok Thanks 😀
I want to read Brody's ghost, I read a few panels from one of your mastering manga books (I think it was 2) and I already like it.
Awesome work always Mr crilley
I feel bad Markcrilley's channel is dying. He has been around helping artists for so long and still makes really amazing tutorials. It is very sad to see all the filth that's popular now, but really neat stuff like this is completely overshadowed.
You should do a challenge where you have to draw and color a picture but the coloring is inverted.
Lovely work
I have been watching your videos for a long time thanks for making this RUclips video
My first thought was “Why is he drawing Jessie?”
I went run errands with my mom and I happened to find one of your books shout out to you because I love drawing anime and manga and it would really help me with my anatomy practice it's called Mastering Manga the books I bought I already skimmed through some pages and they are really Internet 😄

I came cause mark and drawing
My issue is I make the background characters super in depth and then I fall in love with them and want to make them the main character
Steve Urkle also fell down the same path of a side character becoming the main character. Key and Peele actually made a skit about it.
Perfect
Ahhh Happy days :D Surprisingly his "real" name was Arthur Herbert Fonzarelli...
also I love ur videos man
Can the same logic apply to making an rpg. (I mean duh it can but would a comics narrative standards apply to an RPG with gameplay and stuff.) I wanted to add supportive characters without making them annoying and more loveable
1:05 First of all it's called Football, not soccer (ruddy americans). Secondly it was a volleyball in Cast Away.
Hi @markcrilley please draw the characters of attack on titan. Your vids really inspire me to draw again.
Do Valt Aoi and Shu Kurenai from Beyblade Burst
nice
#kkdrawing
I didn't understand the third tip.
Kyano from assassination classroom is a good example for number 10

Mini Hamzie I don't know how to score my drawings 😂😂😂😂
😂😂Dont worry, neither do i, i just keep drawing and believe that im improving, that way i may actually improve
Nossa
Is that Jesse the cowgirl from Toy Story?
Do you think I can draw like that
I used to not like her particularly as a child because she was a complex character. She wanted Woody to quit being Andy's toy and being selfish and I hated that part of her because I couldn't understand why she would act that way towards him.
Now I get it but I don't relate to the story of Jessie.
Still no dislikes wow 😮
I HAVE BEEN SUMMONED
Me too
"i'm being summoned. What happened in this town? If I take the elevator down i might find it."
Can you find a way to make me draw better anime?
Firstly, start calling it manga, not anime.
Secondly, practice. A lot. Just copy characters, follow tutorials, make your own (however bad). Keep going. Draw at least 1 character a day, preferably as much as possible. Literally every waking moment (but don't sacrifice school, sleep, eating, exercise, etc.)
Ricky thanks dude!😎
