Thanks for this. The only question I have about iCloud is about sharing files. Using dropbox I can go to the dropbox website and get a link, then email it to someone so they can view the file or photo. How can I do that using iCloud?
I brought a soundtrack “Skyrim soundtrack” from a online digital store, upload from my Mac Pro to iCloud . However I can seem to get to show on my IPad Pro , wish you could drag and drop that music from iCloud

Great video explainer. I’m a long time Mac and Dropbox user that is now (thanks to an iPhone purchase) entirely entrenched in the Apple ecosystem. Looking to switch to iCloud to simplify my workflow. I found your video very helpful and have now subscribed!
I call myself the iCloud poster boy. I use it the same way you do. I love that I can erase and reinstall either of my Macs without performing a backup first. iCloud is also growing into an identity service provider. It serves as the authenticator for my Apple Watch unlocking my Macs. 2-factor authentication helps to protect my account in case someone steals my credentials.I remember that there used to be an account creation option to use our iCloud account to login to a Mac. What happened to that? I think iCloud is awesome but it has been a journey to get to this point. I think when iCloud first debuted, Apple probably had a vision of where they wanted it to go, but it has evolved more than they first intended. I was a Dropbox user up until the summer of 2018. Since switching over, I don't miss Dropbox.
Thanks for clearing up some misconceptions I've had about iCloud! Question: Is there any functional difference between using iCloud on macOS and Windows? Is the feature set and sync behavior the same?
This is a great tutorial! I have one question, can I store music files on icloud? I have an external drive that is not working with my new Mac. iCould would solve this issue for me if music can be stored on there.
Good video, but would love to know more about using iCloud Drive and not the limited space available on laptop. Meaning, can the iDrive be used rather than the cDrive storage on a MacBook
Great Video. Do you use any backup solution for all your data? What if your icloud account gets compromised? Due to hacking, Apples servers going down etc. Thx
Great video but iCloud isn’t a back solution it’s just a syncing solution and it would be risky to rely just on iCloud as a backup strategy. Ideally we all need 2TB internal drives as minimum so we can keep all our data locally and then back it up to an external drive
Hi my name is Tom. I was curious can a person buy an iPad with say 64G of onboard storage and simply save a ton of data on the cloud. Or do you have to have large onboard storage and large cloud storage. ??? Many thanks love you videos.
THANK YOU! I don’t fully utilize iCloud for storage, but now have Apple+ which includes 2TB and will do a data migration (though most of my files have most likely synced unbeknownst to me). I’ve pretty much maxed out my 2013 MBP storage, but there’s zero wrong with the MBP. Personal home videos make up the majority of local files. I need to keep them local in order to manage them via manage iTunes and access via AppleTV. If there was a magical way to do this, then I would free up so much storage!!!
Great video!! I still have one question, can I only “upload” the photos/images I take with my iPhone? I don’t want the images I have on my iPad or Mac to sync with the cloud, yet I do want to see the images I have in my iPhone in ,y other devices. I hope I explained myself
Hi. Enjoyed your video. If i use iCloud Drive for an iMac and Macbook (and iPhone and iPad) is everything uploaded to the same iCloud ‘space’?? If i have different files with the same name on the two units… or if i have different versions of the same file on either unit… what happens to the files? Can you please help?
Thanks for this video E...at 10:30 you mention that you run current projects off of external drives...fair enough...but then what happens to those big files when done? How to you archive them, or where do you keep them? Do you move them to some HDD external drive or a NAS? Would love to hear your workflow there.
hey, love the video! How do I stop iCloud from uploading a certain folder? For instance my final cut library? As you said, that fills up your cloud very quickly...
I have a question. I have an icloud account from a long time ago (iPad) but because I don't use apple Iet my daughter use it. Well tomorrow I'm switching from Android to iphone and would like to have my old iCloud account back. How would I go about doing that? Would it be best to just get a new iCloud account?
QUESTION for E and anyone here: When i save documents to iCloud Drive (and my other cloud storage service PCloud) its still showing up on my iPad storage. For example if I save 50G of new video files, from like an SD card to iCloud Drive, that 50G of storage is showing up in my iPad storage locally. Why? Same with PCloud service I subscribe to. My question is why is storage locally on my iPad being used for documents I put on any cloud service? MANY THANKS!
Hi, can I "copy" all my photos (about 1TB) to iCloud drive on my mac and then access them and search them with the photo app (and use the apps search and filter functions like face recognition or location)?
Also if you use a Windows PC you can log into iCloud and have it sync your files. I like the drag and drop into iCloud on PC and it instantly shows up on my iPhone/iPad. I just thought I’d share this rather obvious knowledge because I used ‘email yourself’ for two years lol.
Really good video, explain very detailed!! I had a question, can I use office 365 programs (word, excel..) and save them on the Icloud storage as well? And be able to open them on my iphone/ipad on the Icloud? Thanks!
Caveat, optimized storage doesn't keep all your files on your Mac. This means that some Time Machine backups could be missing files that you thought were being backed up. I disable this feature. 9:51.
Hi and thanks for sharing. Good to see some content from Europe! You did talk about backups early in this video, and the way you brought up iCloud while never mentioning traditional backups again may imply that you actually consider iCloud as a replacement for backups. But wouldn't that then be keeping all eggs in one basket? Especially if you no longer even have some files on your computer. There's a non-zero chance of one getting locked out, blocked, or otherwise removed from their iCloud. I remember watching 1 year worth of my photos disappear because early in my iPhone usage I misunderstood how Photo Library Sync vs. Optimise Storage works. And while it was clearly my user error, acknowledging and learning from it won't get me my photos back. And the irony is I didn't back them up elsewhere precisely because I thought that iCloud is already *the* backup. Point (that should have been re-iterated) is: while iCloud is undoubtedly convenient, independent backups are mandatory.
Im new to apple and thought your video was extremely informative and I have since subscribed. However my total Mac storage is showing 55GB being used by iCloud is this normal as I would have thought this storage should be in iCloud and not on my Mac. Thanks Tony
So..question, I have taken photo's on iphone, it's automatically uploaded to icloud, which is also synced to my laptop. Is this taking my laptop storage up unintentionally? - Also if I want to delete photo's on my laptop, how can I delete JUST the picture on my laptop and not remove it from my iphone as well?
Great video, I've been apple user for over a decade now and use the icloud/email service, but I barely use it. This video helps clarify what else I can do with icloud.
E didn't get it all, I'm not new to Mac but in the mud with iCloud Drive, however, this is the best tutorial over anything else. No ego, now unnerving music. Please accept my thanks, I am not using iCloud Drive well at all, hunting and pecking and fearful of deleting my doc's. Only thing I can do is keep following you and your vids, more slower detailed 'crate a word file. In the past I would just save it to my folder in Documents of Important Stuff but now I don't know where to save it. What say you. Thanx
Brilliant explanation. So in your setup 100% of your files (or at the very least the Documents and Desktop folders) are stored in iCloud Drive? Doesn't this mean a delay in accessing your files if they first have to download to your Mac? Also, if you don't have internet access (don't laugh...in Australia good internet speeds are a rare luxury) how would you access your files?
Great video, you seem to really know everything about iCloud, but not sure I totally understand. I am feeling my old Mac. If I erase my old MacBook, will it erase my iCloud? I cannot find the answer in any Apple support or Community. Thanks for your help.
Great video. Apple has locked accounts in the past for no reason or false evaluations. That's why I'd never put all my data into iCloud. I use a NAS instead. But that's a personal decision of course.
Hi E! Thanks for your help! Here is my question. I need to format my mac and reinstall everything again. Should I backup any file from iCloud Drive before? I'm afraid the files that I moved to iCloud on this computer will be deleted. How can I check that every file is backed up online? Thanks again for your help!
Awesome content E very useful. However as a person who has the 2TB iCloud storage I have a (hopefully dumb) question. I think I am misusing the product. I still use iTunes on a 2012 Mac mini, with my iTunes library stored locally with purchased movies tv series and music and music matched (from CD) music also stored in iCloud for back up / security. However, movies I have ripped from (personally owned - duh, I’m not a thief) DVD’s converted to mp4 and downloaded meta data via subler and then added to iTunes do not have the “add to iCloud” icon in my iTunes library that an iTunes purchased movie would. On my 1TB iPad I can transfer them from iTunes to the iPad’s internal storage (and they even show in the recently purchased items list in the TV app), but I can’t add them to cloud storage so I can download them on my 256GB iPad. Yeah, I could manually add from iTunes but I would have to decide which movie to delete from the 256GB internal storage of the iPad. I leave a 15GB buffer of free space on the 256Gb iPad to temporarily add stuff to watch on the fly, but if the DVD rips were on the cloud I could download from cloud to iPad, watch, delete, and repeat.so my question is how do I add dvd rips to my iCloud library. My Mac mini is still on Mojave (I didn’t want to update and lose iTunes, I wouldn’t know how to sync my iDevices without it). Do I need to upgrade to the new os and lose syncing ability to be able to upload dvd rips to iCloud. I have both iCloud and time machine back ups of my Mac mini, but do not have the knowledge of how to sync dvd rips to iCloud.
I use Google drive and Evernote and iCloud. Having a hard time going with just one. I’m leaning towards going just all iCloud but what I find very useful and the other two is the powerful search features to find documents I have in these folders. How is that with iCloud. I know with Evernote i can scan a document or receipt with my phone and if I search that it comes right up can I do that with iCloud
Great video! Having recently enabled iCloud Drive for my Documents/Desktop folders, I'm only wondering how easy would it be to return to the former state in case I decide to cancel my subscription in the future? I also find it a bit scary that with the optimized storage you might not have access to an old document which you really need at an offline moment, but you don't use that often so it's downloaded.
Hi E. The iCloud Drive on my Mac mini seems to be frozen. How do I go about unfreezing the iCloud Drive or re-booting it so it starts functioning again. It has been frozen for days now at the same download/upload speed - not advancing. Thank you.
If I have icloud on an older iPad can I use it on a newer iPad I’m about to buy…..and will that iCloud I use that is older update to the new iCloud version….can the new iCloud version store apps
Can I access , say a 50 GB video file from my iCloud storage if I have less than 50 GB of storage space left on my internal drive? For example, assuming I have a 32 GB iPad
That’s actually a really good question to ask about all cloud services but purely to question technical limitations. From a usability point of view the question is totally redundant. You don’t use online storage for single 50GB files you’d need access to. Use offline storage for those.
Hey I have a question?im trying to post a video on SoundCloud and I had to use iCloud Drive.when I taped on my video I saved to files it was darkish and I couldn’t tap it
How does backup work when using iCloud? Presently, I use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy every file on my hard drive to a backup drive every couple of weeks. My co-worker uses a cloud backup service (I think BackBlaze). Both of these methods back up everything on a local hard drive. If some files are in iCloud and some are on a local hard drive (and this is constantly changing based on whether the file was recently used) then how does one back up all the files?
how to back up external SSD to icloud, its possibvle ? i have a number of drives old and very old, and seams like i can back up only this what i have on my mac / ipad / iphone ...
Hello bro can you help me after I upgrade software to macOS Big Sur 11.4 I lost some documents in my iCloud Drive and a lot of program not support. How should I do bro?
excellent explanation. i can only wish apple will be generous enough to add another 5gigs every time someone add another ios device in their personal lives.
Question I bought a new iPhone with 512gb but when I go to my pictures show me that I need mor storage in iCloud why? It’s 512gb .. do I need purchase iCloud?
Hi there! This is very informative especially sharing iCloud among family. Your keyboard looks very pretty and professional can you share its specification or Amazon link. Best Regards From Pakistan 🇵🇰
So I did this. I had my documents and files unchecked from iCloud. I checked them and it took a day to add a 120gbs to my iCloud from my Mac. Now my mac has 120gbs extra on the local drive. I thought this would free up space on my mac but it added more.
The only issue I have with iCloud is speed. it's slow here in Nepal, despite having near 5g connections. This becomes noticeable/intolerable during any continuity workflow, say you are working on a photo in Affinity on your iPad while on the couch, and then you want to switch to working on your Mac in the study. Well, if ur depending on iCloud to sync the changes anytime soon, good luck. That's why many apps still have their own syncing built-in, using sync servers or whatnot. Even apps like Notes (Apple's) and tiny apps like Copied that depend on iCloud, are just a pain to use if you are switching devices all day long. iCloud can't seem to ever keep up, and there is no SYNC NOW button for iCloud, you are just inside the black box, in the dark, waiting to sync.

Just bought a Mac mini and went through many of your videos. Really useful and simples videos. Keep it up E!
I like how you used the phrase 'rented space' to describe the iCloud. I have also heard it described as 'someone else's computer.'

You are awesome. Thank you so much for this!!

Hi there! This is very informative especially sharing iCloud among family.
Your keyboard looks very pretty and professional can you share its specification or Amazon link.

So I did this. I had my documents and files unchecked from iCloud. I checked them and it took a day to add a 120gbs to my iCloud from my Mac. Now my mac has 120gbs extra on the local drive. I thought this would free up space on my mac but it added more.

iCloud for life
The only issue I have with iCloud is speed. it's slow here in Nepal, despite having near 5g connections.
Love this channel, great job E!
Thank you 😊
