The look on your face just before you made that big cut on the main trunk " priceless ! "
YES! Hard pruning - my favorite kind!
I've noticed that! When I'm watching your videos, I always like how you prune, it keeps the tree small and builds tremendous character!
What an ending!
Can't wait to see the Porche being brought back on road. I had a dream last spring, I had just similar one in that one and was so sad to wake up to having none.
Great cuts on the sabre leaf, hope it was worth it. The hesitant cut on the leader was on point! Rootbase on the tree looks very good indeed.
We had just -1 degrees here in south Finland, but up at my home in Lapland was -40 so your little snowy -8 is a sweet weather.
Wow! I can see the challenge of having a white Christmas. Luckily you are strong to work with the snow.
I took a cutting of a saber leaf focus and put it in water and it rooted better than any tree cutting I've ever taken! Looking forward to see it's growth in the future.
When you had finished pruning the tree but before the major trunk cuts my reaction was similar to yours....that the tree looked awkward. I guess it was the time to begin to correct those structural flaws by biting the bullet and making drastic cuts. Not the easiest decision I’m sure, after 19 years of work on this (potentially) terrific tree. ~ I’ve liked this variety of ficus since I use to sell 10 footers for interiorscapes many moons ago. The weeping leaves give it a certain elegance. ~ I’ve been living in coastal California for almost 35 years.....I’ve forgotten what real winter is like. This immersive video brought back my experience of NY state snow storms during the first 30 years of my life. I do miss the distinct seasons but my blood is too ‘thin’ now to enjoy sub-freezing temperatures.
That’s a really hard prune!
It's hard work but nice to have some snow. We used to have winters like this. Last year we had no snow and nothing yet this year.
Love that sabre ficus
Ah thank you for this! I have one I have been growing out for about two years, and it needs a serious pruning similar to yours. This helped inspire me to tackle my saber : )
Good job!
Wow Nigel Sir,such a reduction,I hope the tree grows out more vigorously with plenty of branching in the future 🤞
Thank you for sharing!
good work
If only the US and Canada allowed the shipping of cuttings! It's so hard to come by interesting fig cuttings.
Cheers,
Chris
Dear Nigel, that was a hell of a pruning! 😱 I have a bigger ficus like this (Ficus Alii, I think?) that I got from my son's teacher back in elementary school. I pruned it so many times (not as drastic as you did, lol🤭) and I saved all cuttings every time. So now I have smaller trees that I want to make bonsai of. I just pruned the big one yesterday, so I was thrilled to see this video on the very next day... 🙂🙃 But now as I watched this video I want to prune the smaller ones too... 🙄 But they look so good now. Still that I know they will grow their foliage back, I'm hesitating. 🤦🤷 Decisions, decisions... 😔😅😁
I am looking forward to watch the videos about working on the porsche 911 s.
Lmao we all watching Nigel smack his tarp 🤙🏻
Oh...you have a lot of work to doin winter...!!!
I've never seen a double handled shovel before, except yours.
Love ya Nigel... But it hurts to see that beautiful tree reduced to stumps.
I understand dominance and bending (or cutting lol) it to your will, but still ouch.
Seeing the beginning I remember we used to get snow here in the winter and I kind of miss it. Then you get to the showelling and I thought, maybe I dont miss it that much :) I hope you plan to make a series on the porche like with the truck - I know its not bonsai but I really liked the truck series aswell. Hope you had a great holidays and a safe journey to the new year.
as always a really beautiful bonsai and exciting video. these were some hard prunes, i hope the bonsai can take such cuts :) i showed my boyfriend this video just now and he really enjoyed it too. i feel like this can become something to watch regularly together. until now it had been my guilty pleasure, since i do not own any plants anymore after moving to a new apartment. i‘ve been watching forever and love your calm presence. please keep it up and all the love to you and your hobby.
I think if you had an overhead camera we could get a top view of what you are doing. I have two of these trees and trying to figure out what to do with them. Thanks for these videos!
I see that I would have to move to Canada if I want a white Christmas again. We kinda stopped having them a few years ago. Thank you for the video!
Lol, -4 is pretty good 😌
Those were so BRAVE cuts, wow. I was on the edge of my seat
Wow, look at that sucker bleed! I didn’t know they had such milky sap! Pretty wild. Also if you baby that Porsche the way you nursed the orchard truck back to life, I think we’re all in for a treat next year. Should be fun! Cheers!
I absolutely LOVE this video! Having grown up in Rochester, NY, I know snow. I used a floor broom to push snow off a tarp-roof from the inside. We had drifts that completely covered our garage and my brother and I dug ourselves out from the inside. It brings back fond memories. Your hard-pruning of the ficus is a great example of how you must make a bonsai ugly before it can be beautiful. My wife was always amazed when I brought back trees from a bonsai class and they had lost 3/4 of their mass. Those are some of my favorites now. BTW, love the hair...I haven't got mine cut since Covid began.
Merry Christmas Nigel ...
By far my favorite video you've done! As a very subdued person, I found myself loudly cheering you on with each dramatic cut!! I have been watching your BonsaiZone for years, love them all. Thanks for the fun!
Thanks Liliana, it definitely got a pruning!
hi Nigel ... I can't imagine how cold it is. however, your bonsai is still beautiful. your hand is special😍😁
That’s what she said
Wow, really not easy the plants all under the white snow but will know after that all things will get back and even the green house was suffered. It's great that you got still a lot of bonsai at lovely status to show us.^^
Whoa! Huge chops there. I find inspiration for my ficus trees now. Thank you for this video.
I would love to see a nicely branched saber or even a sketch of one. I have two ugly tall Saber trees I"m fumbling with.
I would die in that weather 😂😂😂...... Here in India, Assam +10°C is coldest day 😂😂😂
Wow what a reduction!
Because i saw your car: the word "Fee" is german and means fairy ❤️
hello!
The Bonsais are proud to share space with the pristine Zone snow and Targa. Would a (Sabre Tooth) Tiger like to shelter under the Sabre Leaf Ficus?
we would love to see an update on this sometimes this year please :)
Thanks, it will be coming!
Wow
Oh wow, it was really a hard pruning
He chopped it like a damn jade lol
Those cuts! The drama!
Hi Nigel,
what are the consequences of a vertical cut like the ones you show here?
Is it for easing the transition to the leader that might sprout near the topmost point?
Ficus Amstel tree
Highlights that I want to be able to reference later

19:23 & 20:10 & 20:56 - “the big cuts”
So much snow. And we are about to experience the second snowless winter in a row here in Ukraine 🇺🇦.
where are you dumping all the snow at?
Love the look of the saber leaf ficus, if you saved a couple of cuttings, I would love to pick them up before spring!
Hello
Love your vids Nigel!
Why did you make vertical cuts? I've heard about the roots been cut vertical for downwards roots ... If anyone can explain to me I like to learn more ... thanks
Hi Nigel! Great work in the Bonsai Zone, big cuts and snow piles 😄 I really like the look of the sabre leaf ficus in general it just has a jungle feel to it... 👍🏻
Wow you have snow! and also the scythe of death at min 10.00-10.10 🤣
Your drastic pruning is perfect for this drastic year! The leaves on that tree are really neat :)
Yes. I know how it is to shovel snow for 3 hours and then have to go back out and shovel it again. Pace yourself and take a break with a hot cup of tea. Having one now.
Would pvc pipe for the roof be stronger? You could redo the roof and then the snow would not put a burden on the tarp. That way the snow would act like an insulator and keep the temp in the room 32F. Or. If any pcs left from your new greenhouse, to use that for the roof and that would also make the greenhouse stronger.
Sometimes a severe pruning works out for the best. The tree should recover just fine.
Classic!!👍🏻🎩
And those Secateurs are really top shelf..
Who makes those??
Thanks and keep chopping..🤘🏻🌲
You need a snow blower. That will save a lot of time for you with all that snow. My back is just aching watching you shovel the snow. Wet snow to. Heavy. I know how it is.
Got hit with the snow to
😭 Greatings from hessen in germany. 🌲
Take that top off
Brrr
