    The look on your face just before you made that big cut on the main trunk " priceless ! "

      I've noticed that! When I'm watching your videos, I always like how you prune, it keeps the tree small and builds tremendous character!

    Can't wait to see the Porche being brought back on road. I had a dream last spring, I had just similar one in that one and was so sad to wake up to having none.
    Great cuts on the sabre leaf, hope it was worth it. The hesitant cut on the leader was on point! Rootbase on the tree looks very good indeed.
    We had just -1 degrees here in south Finland, but up at my home in Lapland was -40 so your little snowy -8 is a sweet weather.

    I took a cutting of a saber leaf focus and put it in water and it rooted better than any tree cutting I've ever taken! Looking forward to see it's growth in the future.

    When you had finished pruning the tree but before the major trunk cuts my reaction was similar to yours....that the tree looked awkward. I guess it was the time to begin to correct those structural flaws by biting the bullet and making drastic cuts. Not the easiest decision I’m sure, after 19 years of work on this (potentially) terrific tree. ~ I’ve liked this variety of ficus since I use to sell 10 footers for interiorscapes many moons ago. The weeping leaves give it a certain elegance. ~ I’ve been living in coastal California for almost 35 years.....I’ve forgotten what real winter is like. This immersive video brought back my experience of NY state snow storms during the first 30 years of my life. I do miss the distinct seasons but my blood is too ‘thin’ now to enjoy sub-freezing temperatures.

    Dear Nigel, that was a hell of a pruning! 😱 I have a bigger ficus like this (Ficus Alii, I think?) that I got from my son's teacher back in elementary school. I pruned it so many times (not as drastic as you did, lol🤭) and I saved all cuttings every time. So now I have smaller trees that I want to make bonsai of. I just pruned the big one yesterday, so I was thrilled to see this video on the very next day... 🙂🙃 But now as I watched this video I want to prune the smaller ones too... 🙄 But they look so good now. Still that I know they will grow their foliage back, I'm hesitating. 🤦🤷 Decisions, decisions... 😔😅😁

    Seeing the beginning I remember we used to get snow here in the winter and I kind of miss it. Then you get to the showelling and I thought, maybe I dont miss it that much :) I hope you plan to make a series on the porche like with the truck - I know its not bonsai but I really liked the truck series aswell. Hope you had a great holidays and a safe journey to the new year.

    as always a really beautiful bonsai and exciting video. these were some hard prunes, i hope the bonsai can take such cuts :) i showed my boyfriend this video just now and he really enjoyed it too. i feel like this can become something to watch regularly together. until now it had been my guilty pleasure, since i do not own any plants anymore after moving to a new apartment. i‘ve been watching forever and love your calm presence. please keep it up and all the love to you and your hobby.

    I absolutely LOVE this video! Having grown up in Rochester, NY, I know snow. I used a floor broom to push snow off a tarp-roof from the inside. We had drifts that completely covered our garage and my brother and I dug ourselves out from the inside. It brings back fond memories. Your hard-pruning of the ficus is a great example of how you must make a bonsai ugly before it can be beautiful. My wife was always amazed when I brought back trees from a bonsai class and they had lost 3/4 of their mass. Those are some of my favorites now. BTW, love the hair...I haven't got mine cut since Covid began.

    Hi Nigel,
    what are the consequences of a vertical cut like the ones you show here?
    Is it for easing the transition to the leader that might sprout near the topmost point?

    Yes. I know how it is to shovel snow for 3 hours and then have to go back out and shovel it again. Pace yourself and take a break with a hot cup of tea. Having one now.

  • @farmert9679
    @farmert9679 3 года назад

    Would pvc pipe for the roof be stronger? You could redo the roof and then the snow would not put a burden on the tarp. That way the snow would act like an insulator and keep the temp in the room 32F. Or. If any pcs left from your new greenhouse, to use that for the roof and that would also make the greenhouse stronger.

  • @farmert9679
    @farmert9679 3 года назад

    Sometimes a severe pruning works out for the best. The tree should recover just fine.
