How to Oil, Condition, & Clean a Cutting Board by Howard Products, Inc.
Season unfinished wood surfaces by applying at least 2 coats of Cutting Board Oil. Let each coat soak in for at least 20 minutes. For thick wood surfaces (like countertops) apply 3-4 coats and let each coat soak in for at least an hour.
Make sure to spread Cutting Board Oil evenly with a soft cloth.
Apply Cutting Board Oil to the edges of the board. Then let it soak in for at least 20 minutes.
Howard Cutting Board Oil is made with clear, odorless, pure food-grade mineral oil. It’s safe for all wood surfaces that come in contact with food and will never go rancid.
Apply another coat of Cutting Board Oil.
Make sure to get any dry areas that may have been missed in the first application.
The mineral oil used in Cutting Board Oil is from virgin mineral oils and has no contact with nuts, gluten or other potentially allergenic materials either in production, storage, or transport.
Spread Cutting Board Oil evenly on the wood surface and let it soak for another 20 minutes.
After seasoning with Cutting Board Oil, apply Butcher Block Conditioner. The conditioner helps protect the wood by keeping the mineral oil in and the moisture out.
Butcher Block Conditioner is a combination of food grade mineral oil, beeswax, and carnauba wax. It is ideal for conditioning and maintaining all wooden butcher blocks, cutting boards, wooden bowls, and utensils.
Spread the conditioner evenly with a soft cloth.
Make sure to get the grooves and sides of the board.
The penetrating quality of food-grade mineral oil along with the water-resistant traits of beeswax and carnauba wax helps to rejuvenate the wood and prevent drying.
After 20 minutes, wipe off any excess Butcher Block Conditioner and buff the wood to a nice sheen.
If the bottom of the board looks dry, then apply a coat of Butcher Block Conditioner.
Remember to apply more conditioner whenever the wood looks or feels dry.
When it comes time to clean your Cutting Board, Use Howard Cutting Board Cleaner.
Cutting Board Cleaner effectively cleans and neutralizes odors on well-used wood surfaces including: butcher blocks, cutting boards, wooden bowls and utensils.
First rinse the board with warm water.
Then apply Cutting Board Cleaner with a sponge. The natural cleaning properties of lemon oil and coconut soap safely clean any wood surface and leave it smelling fresh.
Scrub the surface in the direction of the wood grain until a lather is formed and the board is clean.
Then rinse with warm water to remove the cleaner.
Dry the wood with a clean towel.
Remove the cutting board from the sink and let it air dry before applying a coat of Butcher Block Conditioner.

FYI, you can pick up food grade mineral oil at pharmacies in the section for laxatives. It will be about 1/4 the cost of a “butcher block oil”.
I love u
It will fade out and look not so good in my opinion after awhile so the beeswax additive is a must.
pro trick: you can watch movies at flixzone. I've been using it for watching loads of movies recently.
@Kamryn Callen Yea, been using flixzone for years myself =)
Pharm. oil is thicker and doesn’t soak in as well. I tried it. This product is far superior.
I use these for my woodworking project and not just cutting boards
What kind of cloth do you use?
Do I have to apply the oil and conditioner in that order each time my Butcher block needs a touch up or can I use one or the other? Thanks
Can I use this on my Bamboo cutting board as well as my butcher block top ?
Yes! It works for bamboo as well.
I want to stain my board with coffee first. Will it wash out after using butcher block oil and conditioner?
How do you buff the board?????
Do you need to sand the counter tops first before the oil and conditioner?
I lightly sanded mine. Just make sure it's fine grit and goes WITH the grain. I went sideways on a small section and forgot to correct it. You can slightly see it more once the oil is applied. It still looks great though.
Do you have to apply the conditioner after everytime you wash the board with the board cleaner? is that correct? If I use my board every night to prepare dinner, & I'm washing it and putting conditioner on it every night after I clean it and its dry? Am I understanding that correctly?
You don't need to apply the conditioner after every wash, just whenever the wood looks or feels dry (usually every 3rd wash).
Where do I find this
How soon after applying the conditioner can you use the butcher block? We applied to our countertop yesterday.
The surface can be used after wiping away any excess Butcher Block Conditioner.
After you wipe off excess Butcher Block Conditioner, the surface can be used.
I just installed a new butcher block and I am hoping to SLIGHTLY stain before sealing-- will this combination of oil/conditioner add tint or stain to the wood?
If not, would this combination be compatible with 1/2 coats of wood stain (before applying Howard's, that is)?
Thank you!
I wouldn't recommendstaining anything that will come in contact with food
Thank you very much for sharing this information!!
We love your products!
Would cutting board oil be good for guitar fretboards?
Having trouble finding a cloth that doesnt leave lint
100% cotton ring spun towels. They are thin chef towels. Lint free. You can buy a 12 pack around $20. Work amazing
Can I just use the conditioner w/o using the oil (forgot to pick up oil at the hardware store)??
Yes u can. The conditioner also have mineral oil if I'm not mistaken.
@@acemany1126 Thank you!
Totally random but where can I get a kitchen sink tap like the one in this video?
Menards/home depot/amazon
So you just oil/condition one side of the board?
If the bottom of the board looks dry, then apply a coat of Butcher Block Conditioner.
If the bottom of the board looks dry, then apply a coat of Butcher Block Conditioner.
Always apply to the bottom and sides when doing the top. This could potentially damage your board if you don't. Seriously.
Hi , can i normally use my cutting board just with oil, without applying Conditioner ? thanks
You can, but the conditioner would help keep the "new" look. Plus the oil wouldn't help reseal and heal the cut marks from normal use of the cutting board
Just Cutting Board Oil will work well, however, for more protection use Butcher Block Conditioner.
Would the conditioner work just by itself as a finish ?
Yes, However, for cutting surfaces thicker than 1-inch, we recommend "seasoning" with Cutting Board Oil first before using Butcher Block Conditioner.
Is it okay to stain the block before using oil??
We don't recommend using a stain on a butcher block counter top because the stain is most likely not food safe. The stain could seep out of the counter and into your food, causing the food to taste bad and possibly be toxic. Our Cutting Board Oil and Butcher Block Conditioner are better alternatives and are food safe. Counter tops and butcher blocks are better left in their natural color and only maintained with Cutting Board Oil and Butcher Block Conditioner for the life of the wood. Over time, the wood will develop a natural color and “patina” that stain can’t duplicate; just time and conditioner.
i just use the butcher block conditioner, not the oil, is that bad.it is a thin board
The butcher block conditioner should be good enough for a thin wood cutting board.
Can you hear it up in the microwave?
I just submerge mine in hot tap water for a few minutes and it works very well.
Do I need to reapply conditioner each time you wash the board?
No, not every time. Many factors affect when to reapply Butcher Block Conditioner, but if the wood looks dry, it most likely could use another application. The longer you use Butcher Block Conditioner, the better conditioned the wood will become and fewer applications will be necessary. Properly maintained wood not only increases the longevity of the piece but also develops a natural-looking “patina” over time.
My adventure with the tree began with projects from Woodglut.
