i have watched a lot of tutorial viudeos and this might be the only one actually telling the techniques and what gear to use in which circumstances, thanks for great introduction !
Good info, but It’s the old question of why this channel still hasn’t exploded. So I’d like to give just a bit of constructive criticism. In my opinion the thumbnail header has the look of an ad, not sure how long you’ve been using it, so that might prevent some people from clicking. But of course you’re better versed on the subject than me. You’re the type of person people wanna root for, so I hope you start getting the views your knowledge deserves.
Thank you, constructive feedback always welcome. I just changed my thumbnail design and the consensus is that the new one is better, so I'm changing my older thumbnails!
Informative video to watch this morning with my coffee. It is nice to see you apply some physics to your videos and enjoy them a lot, I can relate to them. Cheers
Excellent presentation. Could include travel straight up and straight down to avoid roll overs on sloping sand. Avoid increasing or decreasing vehicle speed if you have to travel over shiny wet sand, . .but prefer not to drive over shiny wet sand as it can swallow vehicles . Pack your vehicle in such a way, to have equal weight distribution over all the drive wheels, to aid floatation and traction. Keep an eye on the cooling system of the vehicle as sand driving is requiring more power and less air movement than open road . MOST IMPORTANT, know the times of the tides. Only travel beaches on outgoing tide, to have recovery time, not lose a vehicle to the sea. Carry recovery equipment, drinking water, communication and first aid .
Thanks Robert, this video is so packed full of extremely useful info for sand driving. I emailed it to a mate as being almost as good as having professional instruction!
As usual - excellent presentation Robert. Well done. Understand track conditions, know and prep your vehicle and have a plan B and C ready just in case.
Hi Robert. I have had some experience in driving in sand. Correct me if I’m wrong. I have used a lot of your tips but one thing I find it easier to drive on sand is I have been using high range in this particular situation because in low range the vehicle has more torque and I find it it sinks faster than on high.
You want to use the minimum amount of torque to avoid excess wheelspin. In sand, 1st low is almost never needed, but below about 50km/h I use low range as I have a nice close ratio gearbox of 2-6th gears, not 1st and 2nd overworking the torque convertor. Above 50, generally only on flat easy beaches, I would use high range.
I'd like to bring up the narrow vs. Wide Tire controversy and say that I've realized they really do have pros and cons. I guarantee you in this exact same test if we had a spare set of tires and wheels waiting to put on that truck and test out the same exact spots with 10.5 or 11 inch wide tires down to one bar it would be better than 9.5 inch wide at the same air
I believe you had a defender. In my 110 the low/high diff lock gear says not greater than 60klms/hr on stick. Did you go faster than this in High 4×4? Thanks
@@L2SFBC yes high with CDL. There's a sign saying Max 60klms/hr so not sure how to drive just on loose dirt. Ps tried to join pattern but keeps saying error with PayPal. Thanks again
Can you send me a copy of the owner's manual please via Patreon which I see you have just joined? Not aware of any such speed restriction with CD locked, interested to find out more.
My favourite part about sand driving is that a cheap stock 4wd may out perform a modified one simply because of weight. Heck deflated highway tyres offer a smoother and gentle ride on sand because of the thinner sidewalls. I always laugh at those silly videos of yahoo's in this big diesel trucks getting stuck, and a couple in a RAV4 of all things just scoots around and motors off.
@L2SFBC Hi, Thank you for reply, I mean if I want to stop the car while coast on the sand, do I change gear to N position and let the car coast untill still with no brakes.?
OK I get it. No, you can simply gently reduce accelerator and the car will slow and then stop. Going to N isn't necessary and may even mean too quick a stop.
Oddly most experts I’ve heard, say High range is best on sand. If you mount your Sand Flag on the roof platform it’s even higher and seen even earlier. What does L2S-FBC stand for?
You are a gem, I am sure this is an underrated content. Keep it up! 👍
I appreciate that, please share!
@L2SFBC will do! I am a bit choosy I was forced to subscribe to your channel although the channel name is a little difficult to remember 😂
agreed..!
Good info for people new to sand driving.

The channel name doesn’t help, very hard to remember. Even “Robert Pepper, Motor Journalist” has a better ring to it.
Informative video to watch this morning with my coffee.

Another great video, Robert. When driving in sand I also try to park with the vehicle facing downhill (where possible) to make moving off easier. 🙂
I missed that one!!
Great tip!!
You have the best 4x4 videos I’v ever watched on RUclips . Thank you
Wow, thanks!

Thanks for the great video! It amazes me how much keeping the wheel straight helps.
Makes a HUGE difference in sand!
Excellent Robert. Thank you. Very informative reminders. I only go out a couple of times a year these days and it's easy to forget things.
Very welcome, please share :-)

Fantastic video! Got a lot out of this one. Thank you Robert 🙂
Thanks Robert, I learnt alot. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Very good vids ! Learning a lot ! Subbed !
thanks!
Very cool video ! Tks
Glad you liked it!
thank you, that's full of useful information. I appreciate it.
Thanks please share!
Great video I rekon it may go viral on ther otherside of the world
Not so far :-(
9:40 use high range on that compact sand. I could take my falcon on that ! And have done at Robes drive on beach.
Indeed...no need for low on hard-packed sand.
thank you
You're welcome

Agree, mate. I have a GWM Cannon and in low range there's way too much torque - just use 4H for loose sand.

Yes I did. I did not see any such warning on mine. And by 'high 4x4' do you mean with the centre diff locked?
@@L2SFBC yes high with CDL. There's a sign saying Max 60klms/hr so not sure how to drive just on loose dirt. Ps tried to join pattern but keeps saying error with PayPal. Thanks again

@@L2SFBC my mistake. Turns out you just can't engage the CDL over 60 klms/hr. Really enjoy your informative videos.
What locations were you filming ?
Is it ok to switch back and forth 4h-2h back 4h everytime the terrain changes and while moving? My car is 2020 jimny MT.
Yes but if it is sandy just stay in 4h or 4l.
My favourite part about sand driving is that a cheap stock 4wd may out perform a modified one simply because of weight. Heck deflated highway tyres offer a smoother and gentle ride on sand because of the thinner sidewalls.

When on holt do you bring gear to N
I don't understand?

OK I get it. No, you can simply gently reduce accelerator and the car will slow and then stop. Going to N isn't necessary and may even mean too quick a stop.
G'day Rob
I'm thinking that a sand flag at either end could be a good idea
Have you ever seen someone with that setup?
No as there is no need front is fine
Oddly most experts I’ve heard, say High range is best on sand.
If you mount your Sand Flag on the roof platform it’s even higher and seen even earlier.
What does L2S-FBC stand for?
Beyond just the control that low range gives you, if you have an automatic transmission it will keep your transmission temperature much lower.
11:11 the doctor talking about my brain
Should i shift to 4low
That's covered on the video
And when parking on a slope, point downhill.
Good point I missed that one!
Now we are talking 😅
Normal road rules apply on beaches
Can you please switch on your in-camera stabilisation.
It's on and I often use tripods, but I can't use professional camera people so it's not perfect, sorry.
I like the part where he runs the sand through his fingers...
