I was a Thru hiker for years and I’ve always hiked alone. I’ve had a couple close encounters with weird people but I’ve always carried no to mention backup weapons I’m proficient with. I’m now a Section hiker / Trail Runner. I’ve been through most States and other countries to hike a trail. I’m Native ( di’ ne’ ) and a licensed and recognized tracker for people / animal. I’ve participated in tracking lost hikers through the years and it breaks my heart when I find young children because someone was irresponsible. I’ve seen bizarre cases of missing hikers. Be safe in the outdoors and always listen to your instincts, it can save your life. Ya’ et’ eeh’
Thanks for the good work you do.
Out of curiosity, what would you say was the most unexpected good ending you've had for a search? Like, maybe one where someone was found alive after way longer than you'd have expected, based on their age, experience, the surrounding conditions, etc.
Stay safe friend

I am from Pakistan. I went to the base camp on K2 when I was 14 in the late 1970s and frequently hike in those areas. The northern areas of Pakistan are surrounded by the Himalayas. The area is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful but can be deadly. We NEVER hike alone. NEVER. The minimum number is 5 among our group. Going alone through remote areas is simply not a prudent idea, no matter how sharp and prepared you may be.
That's my reality too.
5 people huh? I can't find one person to go hiking with me lol
@@dickjohnson9582 Maybe you’re a dick … lol
@@dickjohnson9582I mean going to online forums or whatever can help with that. Hell, Facebook groups for certain hikes or backpacking trips that’s a good way to do it. I took my gf on her first backpacking trip a few weeks back. We did a small portion of the PCT #2000 right at the base of Mt. Hood where is combines with Ramona Falls and Timberline Lodge Trail. Timberline lodge trail is about 41.5 miles and takes you around the circumference of Mt. Hood in a loop. You can do it 3.5 days if you’re really trekking, in 4 days if you’re not in the best of shape. Maybe 4.5 if you’re really struggling. You have to cross 13 streams/rivers whenever you do the Timberline, but it’s worth it. Some of the best sunrises and sunsets you’ll see on the west coast. That’s just a little story.
I just came back from k2…unbelievably long hike just to get to see the mountain lol
Never hike alone folks. I nearly died from doing exactly that. Fell approximately 50 feet and broke several bones including hip, leg, arm, and vertebrae. After coming to was able to crawl a several miles back to main trail and get assistance from some nice folks. Without help I definitely would have died
I will always hike alone. There's no joy in hiking with other people.
@@nahkaparturiOG Then let someone know where you'll be and for how long or have means of communication
Of course. More precaution is needed in every aspect when alone in the woods.
Omg. Ur so strong to be able to get back a few miles. Wow!! Ur a tough cookie. So glad ur ok
You can't always hike with someone, you just have to be very careful and wear a garmin
That is freaking scary to think you're a little lost out there and then to stumble on a campsite of another guy who was lost in the same place and who died there.
Or to have someone walking ahead of you and then disappear into thin air😲
@@nanettemyers9571Aliens did it🤡
I first heard this story on Mrballen. It's amazing how the couple was saved by the man who'd died there before.
Here’s my take. I’ve been studying these missing persons cases, and there is a very subtle detail that MUST be followed when hiking. On more than one person experience story, hikers have been known to walk away from all their hiking gear in order to find a place to “use the restroom” and nearly got completely separated from their gear. Personally, I’ve been lost in the woods, and it is extremely easy to do. Imagine getting separated from your gear just before nightfall in an area that will get down into the teens, what is the only outcome? Hypothermia is the only outcome.
Take a length of surveyors vinyl tape, or second tiny light, and tie it to a tree branch high above your gear, when you go to some place to do your business, make it your personal protocol to ALWAYS have the piece of surveyors vinyl, or tiny LED in a direct line of sight at all times.
Also, a spare LED light or two will prevent night blindness. Night blindness is caused by the lack of light in a low valley having 500 foot or more valley walls, and 10 foot high deciduous trees everywhere. The moon is new, and/or you are under overcast clouds. If you walk away from your tent to do your business, and don't bring a light, you will be blind, and won't make it back to your gear. You will eventually be found barefoot, and no one is going to understand how you ended up in a thick bushy place off the trail, no shoes, and your gear nowhere to be found. Why would anyone walk into thick brush, and die there? I know this from personal experience. YOU PANNIC!!!! You know your are in trouble, and are going to die if you don't get out of the situation.
Great advice! And if near or after dark, a glowstick works well also!
PANIC, not PANNIC
Trying to imagine contacting an organization for any information, guidance or assistance they could possibly provide concerning my missing loved one and receiving the sarcastic response that they’re not a babysitting service. Not a good look for the PCT Assn. Considering David O’Sullivan’s parents live in another country, it must’ve been doubly hard.
Yes. The law would be called, but for an entirely different reason.
People can be truly callous. Unless, of course, it involves someone THEY care about. That's a different story. One can only hope they encounter the same perfunctory attitude for their circumstances, when they need help.
It's weird case back here aswell, we haven't had someone going missing in America for a while I believe
Edit: Cian McLaughlin also disappeared on a trek a two years ago as well :/
@@cian2741 With much better GPS, gear, etc.. It's pretty hard to go missing. Unless you're a fool, reckless, or a victim of bad luck.
I was thinking the same exact thing. I couldn’t imagine having the thought in my head of my child in distress in any way at all and not being able to get help to find them. That’s basically saying, no…we’re just going to leave them out there on their own at probably the most precious time to their survival and let them try an figure it out themselves. We’ll go out there months later to see if we can find their bodies. I mean…yes, adults go out on their own but, there comes a point in time when you listen to someone who knows the individual who’s missing and you listen to them when they say something’s wrong, then you take your ass out there and try to find them. NEVER GO HIKING ALONE!!! EVER!!!
Another good video, Steve. The behavior of the PCT association towards David O'Sullivan's parent is totally inexcusable. I've been a hiker for over 40 years, and I would not touch the PCT association with someone else's 10 foot pole.
Why ???
@@devriestownyes.. why..? I’m all ears now and the OP has disappeared 😂
A second why…???
I spent a month at 3 Sisters in Oregon in the summer of 1975 . I did a couple of day hikes from my camp close to WASCO Lake and one day found two guys over a small hill that I hiked that had been lost for 2 days. These guys were elated to go over the hill I had crossed to be back on one of the branch trails to the PCH.
Steve The Greatest story teller
Agreed!!!
Blessed with the best voice ever
I was freaking out wondering what happened to him! I put on a video and closed my eyes to go to bed, when I heard his voice I almost jumped out 🙌🏽😭
Close, after Mr.Ballen.
@@leslievazquez1581 fr when he left missing persons i was so upset i just found him again I'm so happy now i have something to listen to to sleep again 💘
So I grew up in Hemet, just a few miles from Idlewild, and we always heard crazy stories about how there’s very weird people on that mountain… my heart goes out to David and his family
Weird people?
What kind of crazy stories..? We talking House of 1000 corpses crazy or what ?
My grandma would warn me of the "mountain men" of TN.
My head was on a swivel hiking near her house in the mountains xD
Most I ever seen was a a couple black bear, many deer, and lizards 🦎 I could never catch.
Love the TN mountains.

IdyllWild seems to be the center of a lot of missing people

David O'Sullivan's parents probably are more than disappointed with the PCT association, they deserved far more better communication than what they received which was horrible. It was clearly way too long to have started searching for him I'm appalled of the treatment they encountered in order to find their son.
@austin-hs8rh no , there not search and rescue, but they could of advice. rather than blow them out, with a harsh response.
I guess you missed the part where the state used tax payer money, probably on the order of 100s of thousands, to search for the missing hiker. And the several volunteer that looked for signs of him. Also, the fact that other hikers said they may have saw him means that through hikers where aware he was missing. I'm not sure what else you expect. My guess is they are obviously disappointed with the outcome of the search, and wish to spin the story in a way that makes them look like the victim in all this. I get it, I'd probably be acting the same way if this was my child, but that doesn't mean the PCT association was actually so callous. What actually matters is what was done to search for him, not what the parents said someone said to them on the phone...
@@peatmoss4415 Maybe because they were a 10 year old kid back then, or lived on a different continent, or never heard of it or him until years later. Many possibilities. Use your head next time. ;)
@@johnallen8248 - - "Reverse" pops up a couple of time where the hikers could've hiked back the way they've come??? But what do I know???
I'm b;own away that people are still lost/dead due to no tracking or supplies & lifesaving items. Isn't it high time someone worked on this? I/m not even a through hiker and i might do it.
When I was in my early 20s I would hike alone frequently. I ran into bears, creeps and gotten injured while hiking. I have learned my lesson it to hike alone. Hiking alone or wondering off from your group increases your likelihood of something bad happening.
always be aware. bring a dog with you. and protection
I’ve always been interested in the PCT. This video shows how simple the line between life and death can be - a wrong step, a wrong turn. Bless these people.
exactly! life is strange. im at the point where i almost look forward to death compared to how horrid this world is going to become within the next 20 years. between AI takeover and george orwell 1984 slave state,, its gonna get bad. Father have mercy on us all. HalleluYAH

@@nickjohnson6895yes, how sad!😢🕊️
It's no more dangerous than living in a city and driving a car everyday, but scary stories are cool to listen to.
@John Allen - depending on which city, it could be more dangerous.
Not a babysitting service!!!! 😮 WTH
I don't know why someone would even think about making a negative comment. These are about people's lives. Families worried then only to find out that their loved ones are gone. Sad, It really is. I truly feel for these families.

So many of these people died near Mount San Jacinto! Please do John Sturkie who died on the PCT in Mount San Jacinto.
To me, the common link seems to be people prepared for a 'normal' hike then suddenly encountering snow or other bad weather.
Rainier (white pass to chinook pass) is exactly one of those hikes. It’s easy to under prepare as the conditions can change very quickly. Especially in mid October. I would never hike it during that time of year.
White pass trailhead is low enough to be clear, while Chinook can be in a blizzard. I’ve seen it happen as soon as September even. Conditions are deceptive, it’s a spot where the east (dry) and west (wet) climates meet. I can see how someone could under prepare for that section, especially Oct-May when it’s very rangey conditions.
All these people who vanish or die have the same thing in common; they're never smart with their gear. No map, compass, satellite phone, and no weapons for self defense. It's a shame really, because it isn't difficult to be properly prepared.
Or they get too close to the edge of cliffs, waterfalls or slick trail patches. Sadly several of these people fell to their deaths.
Would love to hike this, but I would definitely want a few people to go with before I attempt this! Just want to say Rest in Peace for all that passed away doing what they loved doing in life!
It's great to hear your voice again Steve ❤❤❤
Thank you, Cindy! Welcome Home!

Exactly 💯😂
It is Unsettling and sad to hear these accounts knowing that many of them could have been avoided in various ways. Great narration
The first story hit me hard for some reason. God bless his family.
Why don't they install trail cams on these trails? Capture spots where missing people last seen on trail or foul play. Cams could be secured in locked cage style devices.
You give a voice to the lost souls , thank you. I also feel that to the parents and friends of those who have passed on would be grateful that you told their story.
Just feel so sorry for these folks..
So many people hiking these long distances alone.
In 2014, just out of Campo, a 19yo young man died of heat exhaustion the day after I started out at around mile fifteen It was a hot year- 97 f when I hiked to lake moreno and i brought five liters of water, which was barely enough

I watched the movie WILD and was so inspired i thought i could do this but after watching your channel about the pct i think i would never make it either. Quite terrifying really.
Interesting material, delivered with compassion 👏🏻
i got stuck in mountains and had to walk about 50miles man it was hard
Don't want to offend anyone, may be folks from this place on here, but seems there are quite a few people missing in area of Idlewild. What's going on? Good video, thanks.
Home of the purge attack from within
That trips my trigger - trail association telling David's parents they aren't babysitters - and dismissing them how many times 3 ?
@Begeye-bh5ux I understand that however a parent (s) asking for help to find their child ....how heartless does one have to be to tell them "that's not my job " ? Having compassion should not be part of a job destruction.
I'm so glad that I found you again. Caught you as a guest on another u-tubers site. You're an amazing person, with so many talents(blessings bestowed to an on you by your grandma). The sound of your voice expresses that you are right there with those folks that went missing or tragically passed. Bless you John Stockton

Pretty disappointed in the pct group if they actually said that to his parents smh
It's pretty strange if they did, which is why I'm not sure I believe it was that explicit.
@@FiresCollide agreed, I don't actually know anything about the group but I agree it doesn't seem like they'd say it that way. But then again who knows

PCT Association blew it horribly.
Fact. It's true. I believe Steve interviewed the parents awhile back, almost 100% this comment was fact ✅
Nothing said about how they might have spoken to anyone on the other end.
I'm so happy i found your content i was so upset when you were no longer doing videos with missing persons channel due to the fact i listened to you everynight to go to sleep
Canam Missing 411 - David Paulides all these National Park missing stories are his brain child.
People dont care about your mental health. They only care because they are on the clock but try to talk to these same people off the clock off record, and see how they treat you. This meme ‘I rather you come talk to me about your mental health before I read about it at your funeral”. Same deal no one cares if its not about them (people are conceded) they dont want to hear about your problems. In the end its up to you to fix your issues.
Thanks!

I watch several channels that discuss outdoor survival stories. I only subscribe to those where the narrator has an unique voice, in case I want to fall asleep. I like your voice the best, but you are difficult to sleep to, because you pack so much detail into each story that I find myself sitting up to pay attention. LoL
I remember when this happened with thefirst young man. Very sad. There are many women missing up here in Idyllwild too. And there are psychos everywhere. And not just up in the mountains. People need to stop living in and spreading fear. Especially when they don't live in the areas to know for a fact what the area is like and what the people are like.
That's the thing- having one of said psychos behind you in line at the store, or tearing your ticket at a movie is very different from coming across them in an isolated location
I'm not sure I found a normal human camping anywhere near that pct . I'm sure the trail was unrelated .
But I don't know what to say about them humans .
It wasn't always like that .
But I've always had the pleasure of talking to them all ..jk
I can’t imagine that anyone who would hike there wouldn’t have a sat phone. $700.
I'm sure with all the missing people that dissappear under mysterious circumstances something more sinister is at play here.
The opposite.
Hey Steve I’m new here but like the channel so far, could you do the case of Mostly Harmless? It’s very interesting.
