This is Mono Red | Deckmasters #2 | The history of Red Aggro in MTG
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 5 фев 2025
- The history of mono red aggro dates back to the Sligh deck in 1996. RDW (Red Deck Wins) has been terrifying Magic: The Gathering tournaments ever since, even at the highest level Pro Tours. It is particularly prevalent in BO1 MTG Arena ranked play, getting more players to Mythic than any deck in history.

RDW FTW
I just want to quickly note that another reason monored is so popular on arena is just the fact that it wins or loses fast. Meaning that if you are grinding ladder you can win more matches in the same amount of time and progress faster.
A control deck could be cheap easy and have a higher win rate but if games take twice as long it's better to play the "worse" mono red deck with 60% winrate over the 65% win rate control deck.
Except aggro decks have higher winrates now. They're just that broken. Its why 80% of the competitive metagame is aggro
Twice as long? 😂
Maybe if the mono red aggro player went and made a sandwich during their match.
I want to add another aspect: mtg arena is a f2p game with daily rewards, where it's advantageous to WIN many games every day.
@@Dragon_Fyre Which, at least in my experience, they frequently do.
@@dectilon They always seem to take a break once they are losing 😋
My deck is red
My brain is dead
Embercleave is my hero
your life total is 0
Red is my favorite color, and it kinda sucks that it's so overwhelmingly represented by Mono Red Aggro. Makes the color look much more limited and one-dimensional than it actually is.
True. Big red, and burn control are such fun archtypes that are rarely supported in newer releases.
I love to play “burn control” but I never knew it was called that
@@scrubmcchub2255 don't know if it's an 'official' name, but the fact you knew what I was referring to makes the point :)
Oh do I miss the days when going up against red meant I was going to either play against goblins or dragons
I feel like the real issue is how few red cards are playable at all. When you build a mono red burn deck, it’s just all the best 1 mana cards; whenever you do anything else with red it’s just all the best removal spells, and any leftover broken cards. (fable)
Thank you. The lack of quality magic history content makes me sad more please!
Don't let the blue player fool you that mono-red can kill you on T4 when T4 Omniscience is common place now
That card is just as much of a mistake as god damn leyline of resonance. Do you happen to be lacking GY hate because your tired of being overrun by aggro? TFB here is a nearly as aggressive true solitaire deck. Have fun!
@ericwolf9664 Omniscience isn't the mistake. The consistency actually comes from the 10 reanimator cards currently in standard.
@@HuaYunlan8 and the fact it's essentially 4 additional targets for those resurrections along with one with the multiverse. And I would rather not even begin talking about invasion of arcavos.
Nice to see CovertGoRed go back to his roots 😂
I think the existence of a cheap, decently-competitive archetype is good for the format. The problem here is it's overtuned a bit. Functionally, I think the ideal state for Mono-Red Aggro would be a Standard win rate at like 50.5%. If it's less oppressively strong in the meta, there's much more room for fun and novel stuff to play around with.
I have never expected to enjoy video entirely about mono red so much. Well played my Friend, well played:)
PS. Easy choice, Bad ❤🦥
the deckmasters series is pretty cool!
this video was super well made!
You could say whenever CGB plays mono-red he feels SLIGHted.
Oh, GOD!
It's CGB's evil twin, CGR!... We're doomed.
Yo love the "this mono red" drumstep outro, like the figure remix of This is Halloween. ❤
Typical OvertGoRed propaganda! Such a dastardly villain!
Entertaining!
I first started playing in Arena, when CGB just started singing the Mono Red song, i remmember when mono red died for a while and mono white Thalia was the worst thing in Arena, then meathook died and mono red reigned supreme
Loved the format! Please do more!
I think an important to note that the Sligh deck cemented the mana curve as a foundational part of deck building theory, much like how The Deck made card advantage one of the pillars, if I remember correctly. Laughably bad cards like Brass Man was chosen, as the deck valued playing on curve over everything else
This video was nice like the way you did this cgb
Now that CGB has mono red out of the way, maybe the next episode in this awesome series will release sooner. 😇 I'm already looking forward to the next one!
mono red is great for the game, its an extremely great way to onboard new players due to its affordability and braindead nature of it, like a human with a single functioning brain cell can know that they can beat players better then them without spending much money and that gets more people playing the game. It also keeps other decks honest. people should be running more early game interaction then they do, and mono-red forces you to do that.
I’ve recently constructed my first Mono-Red Brawl deck (which also happens to be the first Mono deck I’ve ever made) that I called “Chandra Tribal”, with “Chandra, Acolyte of Flame” as my Commander. The basic premise behind this deck is to just play as many Chandra planeswalkers as possible, whilst my Commander is essentially proliferating all of them.
I love this series. Keep up the great content.
When I first got into Magic, back in 2001 or so, when I was still a primary school kid and had to ask my mum to buy me cards, my first deck (actual deck, not disorganised pile of cards) was a preconstructed mono red deck. A year or so later would be the last time I'd actually play with my own cards; I came back to Arena five years ago, but I haven't gotten any cards since. And that means it was also the last time I played mono red.
Because honestly, I can't see the fun in it. It's a one-trick pony. I could probably play ten or twenty games with a mono red deck and still have fun, but it would wear off quickly, too quickly to be worth building the deck. I honestly can't imagine how someone can play this for days on end and not get tired of it immediately.
It might be dopamine rush addiction 😅
This is a great series I hope you keep it up cgb!
That Atlanta Pro Tour was held on my 6th birthday lol. Could I have been a mono-red player even back then?
My mono red burn/haste deck destroyed through a tournament in the late 90s, but I was the only one playing it. Now mono red seems way more powerful and popular.
I'm a traditional mono red player. The old school RDW days were my favorite because you actually needed a strategy to put pressure on your opponents, especially against those playing Necropotence, ProspBloom and Counter Post, which were top tier.
The mono red aggro of today's just absolutely boring and lacks depth. I don't really play it at all because variety's the spice of life. However, my inner teenager's excited to see that Ball Lightning's back.
It's how I feel about regular standard completely tbh. The last 3 years especially, just looking at Arena, it has been mostly the same.
Really happy to see the series hasn't stopped at episode one. Looking forward to see what's next!
Anyway, regarding the attractiveness of MonoRed in Arena, I would add that faster games, at equal winrate, allow you to climb faster, making it easier to reach whatever goal you give yourself at the end of the month.
Or maybe I'm just making excuses for being so bad with my control decks.
I don’t even know how to play magic by I understand red. Good vid bro
Oh, this series is so cool! Had to hush to watch the first one.
The face that you chose to depict monored players 2:20 ... Almost made me pee myself
Mono red, slowly converging MTG into Uno.
Even the litter robot can play it 😂😅
I miss the old Fork days…..
Great idea for a video series.
Bring back the OG Meathook! It killed RDW! Loved that very small moment in MTG.
Hey, man.
That kid down my street actually did play magic 😂😂😂
I don't remember seeing opponents with decks they made themselves. Copy, paste, play, don't understand anything, follow the algorithm, put the cards on the table, go on the attack. Why play at all? For what? So stupid... These are the main players with red decks, they don't even know the opponent's cards, because they make very stupid decisions, and then think timeout why they couldn't win. COPY\PAST main problem in this game.
Meathook Standard was a mono red free time and it was great
More vids like this CGB!
I always find it so funny that monored has always been the art of patiently killing your enemies swiftly. However, in a ladder play setting where you aren’t really punished for single losses as long as you are winning more… there is no need for patience cause the stakes are low. “Better Lucky Than Good.”
Every time there's a mono-red aggro deck in the meta you can bet you need to hard counter it removing all the fun of playing
The even more outrageous thing about it is that people complain about the amount of removal that's played. Guess why, it's necessary.
I encountered an Azorius-control player a few days ago. You don't see them often these days. (Pio/Ex btw). The black removal spells in my hand, that usually are core necessary to win, were now unusable handblockers :D He wiped the floor with me, and all power to him!
@@arokan327 that's the problem when you need to hard counter monored when you find a combo or control based deck you're screwed every removal in hand or drawn is just a dead card
Love the classic music
Honestly, I think a large factor in mono red popularity is the short games. Typical game is several minutes, weather you won or ran out of fuel and conceded. If arena would put a timer limiting the number of games per hour (which they, of course, have no incentive to do) people will diversify more.
You don't need to limit the amount of games per hour you just need longer games to be less objectively bad. Which is probably what those random daily quests are about but half the time those tell you to play red so they really should be more specific with their incentives there.
@@jellewijckmans4836Why are longer games objectively bad? I think match duration preferences are subjective by default no?
@ Not in respect to how fast you climb the latter or get your 15 daily wins done
Great video 🎉
I love playing Red+splash, I love red mirror, but I think it should slow down, because I also love big splashy things.
I take large breaks from Arena and when I come back the main deck that I can play in standard that's cheap enough is usually some random monored list. I learn the meta by seeing what you were trying to do before I murder you, and when my win rate drops at higher ranks I craft another pile that seems fun... If I could just freely craft one list of my choice every 3 months or something I might not need to play monored
Every hero needs a villain.
I'm going to need a full music video for the Monored song.
@@funkydiscogod I'm pretty sure there is one... somewhere in the channel's history. I mean, it's from the days of Eldraine... 2020, I think?
Mono blue is the mono red of commander.
Funny way of saying mono green
I used to hate Mono red as a control mage for the longest time. But after a format where my entire control deck more or less rotated out of standard I picked up Mono Red because it was cheap. I was already winning a lot of grindy control and midrange games back when I was on Sphinx's Revelation and Supreme Verdict and people hated me for making the game go long. Once I switched to Mono Red and started killing people on turn 4 I got asked to please go back to playing control decks.
Seems like a normal day in yu gi oh to me if it finishes the game in turn 2 😅
There was that Skred red deck that won a GP back in the Ice age of modern, before the fire design and horizon set times. Monored could do different than impulse draw and damage doubling, and it and had some interesting designs.
I guess the most different monored deck only managed to win before the huge power creep spike.
Can anybody here tell me what koth of the hammer does?
Also, there were original norin, original jaya, and that portal three kingdoms monored commander that could have been a interesting option for edh; there is even a mono red Control edh deck tech from the professor for starke of rath. I wonder if it is still playable in a game nowadays.
As clearly shown by the picture, I felt vested in defending them mountains.
Whoever reads this comment, please remember to rage at wotc being poop at their jobs by going for profit margins rather than a good game, and not to rage at the players themselves.
Monored is annoying. But I like having a cheap option that gets me wins when I mostly play free-to-play on MTG arena. So, I don't know if it's good or bad, but it lowers the barrier to entry which has to be good on some level.
Very cool!
awesome video
The current version of mono red with all the mouses and nemesis has a LOT of combos that I never see people using it. It seems like an easy deck on surface but there is a reason why people use it in championships, it is easy to get started but there is a lot of room to get next level with it.
Also I prefer lose to mono red than a 20min match azorius control every day :(
Imho it's unhealthy for the format to be so much dominated by aggro. There should be a place for aggro, just not the main one.
Monored is not so domminant, at least not in winrate. It is a few points above others, and that's just for best of 1.
Mono red decks are actually really complex. If the card doesn’t say haste, prowess, or +1,+1. Then you don’t put it in the deck. Seeing that you don’t have to read or think to use these decks, it makes you more susceptible to outside distractions
Love the video CGB! lol
This is CGR 😂
OvertGoRed really targetting this channel with Act of Treason for this video, good thing it only lasts until end of turn.
I think monored is good for the game only because it is the cheapest way to get into formats. There REALLY needs to be something done to address the cost of land bases and the short printing of rates and mythics in stupid slots like "the vault."
This is why pauper is the best format for people to start playing the game.
Was that a young CGB home video?
Me who started mtg 1 month ago , i knew something were fishy in a pay to win game
I LOVE WHEN BLUE PLAYERS COUNTERS ALL MY CARDS AND I CAN ENJOY THE GAME!!!!!
Arena should let you craft a set of rare lands for 1 Rare wildcard. Crafting lands is so underwhelming. I would 100% play more control if that happened.
Mono red is good in Paper MTG because it only gets a fair draw.
Mono red is toxic on MTG Arena because it gets a biased draw.
*Cough-Cough* x4 Monstrous Rages in top 15 cards *Cough-Cough*
this is mono red they play mono red
The low hanging fruit isn't supposed to be the best
Mono red is only as healthy for the game as any answers to it in other deck are playable.
You should link to the previous history video in the description so idiots like me can find it lol.
Don't like red colour but monored decks are healthy for the game. Something has to keep control decks in check.
you should make a dollhouse deck. ive been having a great time in aggro/life gain hybrid centered arround dollhouse and cat collector to make as many creatures as possible using life gain cards like the rabit. its so fun to play id be curious to see a version you would make of a deck like that centered arround dollhouse
Bro is doing everything he can to not play games anymore
I don’t think aggressive mono red decks are “bad” necessarily, as long as there remains a regulatory mechanism to ban cards like leyline. I just hate the obvious hidden code in Arena that puts them on the play what feels like 90% of the time. That is terrible.
Rather face monored than monoblue to be honest. At least I get to cast my spells.
Covergoblue, slaying red decks, I think not, HONEY! While I will say I don't enjoy playing mono red, or red aggro decks. It truly is the only way to quickly get your 15 wins a day and get to mythic. The current Meta isn't fun at all and you know why! So I'll continue to play RED and win, and win, and win!
Just play Mono Red in commander if you want to see Red Deck Lose version 😅
Mono Red is great for the game as a whole, otherwise you get the Era of the Siege Rhino.
It is bad for Best of One for a multitude of reasons. The deckbuilding constraints without a sideboard end up leading to much lower consistency if you try to play a midrange-to-control strategy. Mulligans in Best of One are far worse because you don't know what you're playing against. Even seeing Color Identity of an opponent's deck before deciding mulligans would help. Even the coinflip of Play or Draw is worse as it decides a larger number of games. As it is right now you should play an all-in strategy in Best of One, everything else is a mistake.
Of course the next one is Discard lol
Hi CGB come to timeless, in our format monored is literally unplayable!
Damn, CGB got greedy. I'm not paying what Netflix cost to get access to 3 videos per month. Whatever happened to "I'm doing this for the love of the game"?
Legend and Redd Cat are still good guys
Gooooooblins!!
Been playing for 5 years still never hit mythic 😂 just dont play enough lol
F Mono Red
Mono red is the game baby!!!
Well I mean, it's either I burn you fast, or you counter every fucken game action I try to take :3
Ps. I'm traumatized by Approach of the Second Sun back during Amonkhet, killing opponent before they can cast something like that, that literally makes them win, totally worth it. At the end of the day, in competitive magic, you're trying to win
Now I'm gonna go back to playing my silly dinosaur deck against my friend who has this bonkers unicorn brew
Hand mana curving is a bad feature
I don't care if people like it, it needs to go
It's absurd that best of 1 deck building is designed around a peculiar mana curving "feature" designed to make the game more fun but actually just makes it a bunch of crap
At the very least, it is so quick that doesn't hurt too much...
Monored pilots are Yogioh players that don't like reading cards.
Turn two wins is how they are used to play games after all
Honestly, turn two is too slow, you often make a turn one board going first and they either kill you back or concede and nowadays even turn one going first kills are thriving
What have you done?......
For me lose to Mono Red Aggro is better then suffer through 20 minutes of controls decks.
I love mono red, but I think they have been juicing it up way too much in recent sets.
For each really polluted and complicated deck, there should be a "easy" option to play. Not everyone likes or wants to make a really annoying sequence of 20 minutes digging to find some wincon. Sometimes we just want to go on the line and hit with everything.
Yeah, your hatred for aggro and love of control is hilarious to me
Playing to not lose is actually the simplest way to play Magic, by far
Bad. Also great series.
I hate MonoR, but I hate MonoU more. Why? Because, at least with MonoR, the game ends before 5 minutes.
This is a Arena problema not an overall MTG problem, the way to fix it imo would be to implement a kinda of soft ban system, maybe you select 2-3 cards you DO NOT want to play against, and these cards cant be in your deck, this way you can ban the main red cards, and every monored can be stuck playing against each other.
Monored was what made me quit the games years ago.
Really? I upvoted a mono-red video? Sigh.
To be fair, you did not upvote a mono-red video. This isn’t Reddit. What you did is even worse. You “liked” a mono-red video 😂
Sligh*
