Wu tang were probably the deepest rap group ever, everywhere they went, at least 30 people rolling deep. Real street dudes and the greatest rap group of all time. Every member is a monster in their own right, with masterpiece albums of their own.
Yup and much smarter than the rappers today. No social media but still didn’t rap about specifics on crimes they committed or provide evidence for a current case when songs came out.

In my mid 40's from California, we listened to everything counrty, western, classic rock, hard rock, grunge rock, heavy metal, jazz, blues, hip hop, rap, gangsta rap, and classical. It was all about understanding and inclusion of culture.

It's crazy to think that young fans of a genre never dig through the crates to see what the originators of the culture were doing. I am 47 and as soon as I discovered Hip-Hop for the first time in the early 80's, I wanted to know EVERYTHING about it...and we didn't have the Internet and RUclips.

Fun fact: Nas got his famous name 'Nas Escobar' from the Wu-Tang Clan, being that he was the only rapper outside of Wu-Tang to feature on Raekwon's album, a member of the Wu-Tang Clan.
Wu-Tang Clan, Nas and Mobb Deep all blew up around the same time, and all featured on each others early albums. They were like the hard alternative to Notorious BIG and went on to blow New York hip hop up big time after the West Coast dominated the scene for a few years.
Redman is a member of Def Squad, but is close to Method Man and his label mate, so they worked a lot together and by default Redman became an honorary member of Wu-Tang Clan, featuring a lot on their most recent album a few years ago.

I’m happy y’all discovering the Wu. Being from Staten Island, we rep Wu Tang heavy. First rap group I’ve ever discovered when I was 10 years old. Wu Tang forever 👐 check out “Protect Ya Neck”. It was their first single and 8 out of the 9 original members spit a verse, and you can tell they had a very tight budget when they made it. That’s what I loved about it, it was so raw and rugged.

The South were equally as big in the 90s. You had Master P and his massive label No Limit Records. You had Scarface and the label he was signed to Rap-A-Lot Records, another massive label from the South, and both labels introduced a large number of rappers to the scene, and dominated the scene so much that after a while both the East and West Coast scene started to adopt that South style for a while
Cash Money Records as well
Equally as big? That's a stretch. You had OutKast and all that making noise in '94 for Atlanta but it wasn't until the late 90s; specifically 1997 that New Orleans became the focal point for the South. Then Cash Money from '99 to the early 2000s but prior to that the East Coast nor the West was checking for Southern rappers other than Scarface and the Geto Boys. But even back then Rap-A-Lot rappers was riding off the coat tails of West Coast emceez with the storytelling rhymes about life on the streets.

But they had their own scene in the south that pretty much became its own economical autonomy, so much so that by the time the likes of Master P did start to get featured on East and West artists albums, he was already a multimillionaire from how his label was a force of its own in the South. This was mid to late 90s. I remember seeing the southern labels pushing their artists with their unique ads in the Source magazine and XXL, but personally I couldn't stomach most of it myself.
@@ScottyBanton I definitely wasn't a No Limit soldier fan but I have to give it to Master P for basically being a self made guy. I remember him saying how he did it. He had to pay Michael Jackson's lawyer five figures to counsel him and he went to the library to read a bunch of books on how to be an entrepreneur.

I'm in SA, 40yrs old...and grew up on Wu. This right here is something we all need to take accountability for (if we really wanna keep it honest at our age). Coz this is the direct result of what happens when we neglect our seeds man.
Now...think of all the other harder decisions these young men are still going to have make in life, in general - other than just taste in music. The lyrics they nodding to are still as relevant to them today as they were to me 25yrs ago. But they didn't seem to catch even one.

90's hip hop was about creating a cool vibe (sometimes a much darker vibe than most stuff nowadays), not trying to fit as many syllables into each bar as possible. It was about the flow and a memorable groove, not just a beat. They would also have change ups in the song's kind of like a bridge in normal music. There were small progressions in the songs that made them stand out, and memorable to the ear. The beats also sounded a lot more natural like someone was playing a drum kit, whereas now everything is so robotic sounding. Don't get me wrong, lyrically rappers have gotten more complex than ever before, but there is more to hip hop than words and cadences. I wish rappers would focus more on making good songs, not just lyrics and complexity. The flows were a lot smoother in the 90's gangster rap era with a more laid-back style, whereas nowadays rappers are almost yelling the lyrics aggressively to get all of their lyrics out. It's that Nas style on steroids. That works too, but it's different. Back in the 90's it was just about making a good song you could vibe with, period. I miss the different flavors of unique vocal styles, the overall vibe of 90's rap. New school stuff tends to be too hyper, overproduced, and overdone. Everyone copies each other now. It's cool, but I wish some rappers would try to mix in a more old-school style with memorable beats that don't sound like clicky as hell.

Love Wu, have since they first come out. Crazy how times has changed since then, back then it was gangstas wanting to be rappers, today rappers wanting to be gangstas. Wu were legit and one of the greatestest rap group of all time, always loved how they used OG Kung-Fu movie sound effects etc on their songs as well as their name which was based off of an old Kung Fu movie. Back in the 80s we had a tv show called "Kung-Fu Theater that influenced their music. They also have a tv series on based on how they got started, Wu-Tang: An American Saga 2 seasons out atm.

Scarface and the Geto Boys, UGK, 8Ball & MJG, OutKast, not to mention the rise of No Limit (Mystikal, Master P) and Cash Money (Juvenile, Lil Wayne) in the late 90s, and DJ Screw were the main 90s Southern rappers.

@@405tygadacat I didn't get to see them in '07 but I love their songs,music and just them in general. My son was never a big fan,he into trap music . Once he went he loved it,he said which I plus it that meth makes the show complete. And the addition of ydb is refreshing, brings back memories of his father.

to put it simply, this music came from a time when everything wasn't supposed to sound the same. There were clear differences between west coast and east coast hip hop but that's what made music back then dope as fuck the more you stood out the better it was.
