Wow This I just Amazing music, so sad that we never got to hear him develop and see his true potential. other then that, Today Is the first time Ive heard of Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga, and its such a coincidence That its his birthday. :D And the cool part is that he shares a birthday with our beloved Amadeus Mozart. Im so happy I was checking out symphonies today. So happy birthday Arriaga and Mozart :)
It's a tragic lost to Spain, the greatest Classic Maestro of his time, who died at the age of 19...... Although, I enjoy many of Spain's great classical music maestros, by far, Juan is my favorite, he is truly the "Spanish Mozart'.
Arriaga also wrote 3 string quartets which are equally highly regarded. What a loss. Another fine composer who died very young before he made a real name for himself is Julian Reubke - see his powerful organ "Sonata on Psalm 94".

Habría estado en directa competencia con Mozart, Schubert y hasta con el mismo Beethoven. I've been a lover of classical music for 40 years, and, until they played his Symphony in D on the radio today, I had never even HEARD of Arriaga--and THAT is a crime! Maravilloso!
Found this thanks to a piece on NPR radio. OMG, what a great composer!!!! Up to now I used to think Rodrigo was Spain's best contribution to classical, now I am seriously reconsidering. What beautiful music!!!! Been listening to this over and over. One thing tho. I think a comparison to Mozart based on musical style is probably not as fitting as say, to early Beethoven, adding some tinges of Schubert or even Schumann.

Jeune garçon, Juan Crisóstomo participe aux activités de l'Académia Filarmónica de Bilbao. À neuf ans, il compose un quatuor à cordes dont il tient le second violon. Mozart foi o grande marco da época mas não foi único (e não, não estou a pensar em Salieri) - Michael Haydn, 3 a 4 grandes compositores checos, Johann Christian Bach, etc. Se fizermos isso, maior o valor de Mozart? Sim. Mas fica-se com um panorama mais completo de cerca de 60 anos de jm século notável.

It was brought up to Handel that he had pinched the opening aria of his opera Xerxes from the same aria in Bononcini's opera Serse. Handel: "Ah, yes, but what did he do with it?" Composers routinely pinch each other's stuff and can't help but be influenced by their contemporaries. The notion that to be original, it has to be completely different from anything else is the cult of originalism - originality for its own sake, now commonly achieved by omitting some element of music - tonality, rhythm, melody, harmony ... The ultimate is John Cage's 4'11", which leaves out everything.
