DRUM SOLO 12:20
In this video Danny Carey plays the drums live in jazz group The Doug Webb Group at Squashed Grapes in Ventura, California. I was 10 feet away from him when I recorded this. I was able to shake his hand, talk to him for a bit, and get his autograph! This guy is super nice and one of the best percussionists to ever live. Definitely a GOAT! Thanks for everything Danny!

There is not enough Danny Carey on RUclips
Yeah, but when he does show up, it’s great.
Agreed! I'm going to release another video after I catch Danny at The Baked Potato in LA.
Yes!!
Adrian Belew's Side A album
@@lost50 how do you find out when he is playing gigs like this?
Don't blow his cover. Let this man smooth jazz in peace.
danny looked right into the camera at the beginning lol. he can smell a tool fan from a mile away i'm sure.
It was freaky in person. Like he was looking into my soul.
lost50 don’t worry he was
Only time I've seen him perform without a Kansas jersey
@@lost50 he saw everything lol
That drummer is so versatile he can play in a metal band.
Hes the drummer for tool
@@stevebain3185 it was bout humour something i think .... 😄
@@stevebain3185 🤦♂🤦♂
"You play drums?"
"A little."
hahahahahhaha
danny carey is drums.
haha, best line here!
'I like to play'
He dabbles in it from time to time
He brought his own snaredrum. 10/10
That can change a drummer's whole feel of the kit
Unknown Username this can not be more true. But I haven’t noticed til now.
And it´s his sonor signature snare... yeah
@@seanturpin01 Tell me about it. My drum set never felt quite right to play until I
1. Figured out how to get the snare tuned and 2. Learned how to hit the snare.
Getting it tuned to a workable sound (it was a lot tighter than I had been thinking) was a decent step, but learning to use rim shots was, I believe, the turning point when it started to just feel "right" to play.
The tune is called Povo by Freddie Hubbard if anyone is interested.
Bass line reminds me of The Beatle's Come Together. I love Keith Jarrett in Povo.
Groovy song ❤️
I was thank you!
thanks, the bass is amazing in this tune.
It’s got that Barney Miller sound. So good.
I originally searched for Danny playing jazz, but I ended up fixated at that bass for almost the whole video.
Danny on his big kits with triggers galore is memorizing. Sure pleasing to hear him on a jazz kit in a good groove.
Oh man that was a treat! Danny is pure versatility on the kit. Great playing by everyone. Wish every Tool fan in the world could see this video, bet half of them would by mightily confused!
Sir Wojenheim the third I’m a big fan of Tool but honestly I need to find new music and I think this is a great way to find new things. It was Danny’s name that made me click on the video but the music that kept me watching.
It’s great to see musicians playing different genres and hopefully I find some new appreciation for genres I’ve dismissed or just don’t understand yet.
Ross Culbert that’s a fantastic attitude to have. Good luck in your musical journey. I highly recommend checking out the extensive works of Billy Cobham and Tony Williams; a couple of drumming giants, and major influences on Danny. Those two alone will open up a new musical world that you might not be able to leave ;)
I was waiting for some laturalus
@@RossFixxxed I know this comment is a year old but check out volto bruv. its Carey again and its like chunky jazz.. awesome. pretty sure the guitarist you hear is the volto guitarist also
@@RossFixxxed Drums was a huge gateway into liking jazz for me.
I knew Danny from the LA scene before he was in Tool. He was doing a band called Green Jello.
We both played in variety bands and did casuals and sometimes subbed for each other. Of course he went on to be Danny Carey from Tool and I’m some dude on RUclips with a few drum vids. Lol. Great to see him playing here like the old days.
That’s pretty cool. I would have loved to be around when those guys were doing their thing.
Man, at the end you can feel the musicianship of the drummer so much, as he just fits in to the prolonged outro, giving it a smooth finish. Amazing.
Ooooh yeah. You know who he is eh?
It's amazing how he can just sit down and jam and everything just falls into place. Almost like Danny rehearsed with the band, although I think he's good enough to sit down and figure it out on the fly.
@@michaelmaloney8183 danny carey mate.
@@KodyXXVll I know, I was asking original poster
He is a wizard.
Whay a lovely performance. Amazing stuff. Thank you for sharing this.
Hahahaha I love how he still brought his double pass pedal to a jazz gig
Danny is super classy and most definitely not a dinner he is a percussionist. Always has been always will be. That man is amazing
Definitely not a dinner!
Dinner all the way. Are you freaking deaf?! Pure dinner.
Damn auto correct. Drummer lol
It's refreshing to see him play with such subtlety.
He does what he does and makes it look effortless. I can watch him drum for hours, what a treat.
@@MrSharesky hell yes. I've watched the live pneuma video countless times now with delight each time. I also found a video recently of him and Justin playing aenima at Berklee, on a 5 piece and it sounds like some garage band cover 🤣
I feel like Danny carry answers drummer wanted adds in the paper cause I see him do a lot of stuff like this
Bahaha. That scenario played hilariously in my dome piece.
Justin Hammontree 🤣
Because he CAN.
Like how he started in Tool in the first place.
or he just does the LA session circuit...there is literally an entire subculture (of which the Baked Potato is a key venue) for LA based musician with serious chops to go mash-up and jam on the regular.
Never expected to see him playing a regular gig, so nice! One of my favorite players
Maybe you have never seen this ruclips.net/video/rEfS-GkSWMQ/видео.html
Its so good!
Check out his band VOLTO! There are tons of videos like this.
@@sappy2566 These kids will never forget that day, he is definitely one of a kind, what a cool guy!
Danny looking at the sax player at the ending bit to wrap it up and it just goes on and on, haha, he even gave a little smile right there at the end.
I like he can read the room and adapt to others, prop them up keep it flowing. He is one of the greats.
Drum solo around @12:18
Chocolate chip trip without the mandala drums...
Haha facts
He is the hardest hitter in the fucking game, so even when he just grazes the drums and hi hats lightly that also acoustically fills up the fucking pub. Lol.
Seeing them next thursday! CAN'T WAIT!
If i ever have at least one limb that plays with suche finesse as every single limb or danny carey, im already happy
Add Maynard and you would take off. Love you Danny. You guys are great!!
Danny Carey...the man who makes ALL bands wish they had a better drummer.....just like John Bonham did/does!
danny carey this guy is on fire love him
Freedoor check out his stuff with tool
@@jameslivoti9507 yeah man thx :)
This is one of the sexiest things I've heard all day. Great find
I can never have enough jazz.
Sax: Dooooooooooooooo doodalooo dododo
Danny: Hold my beer
He Google Mapped squashed grapes to find Maynard and ended up here.
😂😂😂
Me too, I'm just looking for my pilot. 👽
😄
where can I find more of this? This is amazing, thank you for uploading this.
As stated in back to the Future.
i guess you guys aren't ready for that yet but your kids are gonna love it
This has a great groove great bassline/bassplayer too
Best drummer in the world.
Watch the bass player from 12:45 and on during Danny's showcase. It is awesome seeing him going through the progression in his head to make context of Danny's solo.
Smooth , I like it
A few great musicians having fun jamming! Thank you for sharing!
Danny's got his indoor-drum vibe in effect...
Is this the new tool material?
Danny is like....Snare on 2&4, 2&4, 2&4, 2&4...light crash. That’s though!!!
Danny makes that drum set look like a kids toy haha, the man is a giant physically, and a phenomenal player. Also, that guitar player was fking SHREDDINNGGGG
really good - it starts off as jazz, and then sort of morphs into prog rock around 4min imo
Heyyyyyyy, this DANNY CAERY from TOOL isn't bad.
yeah, he might become famous one day.
POVO??? Lovely to hear a somewhat rare one played!
Badasssssssss jazzzz
Wow the drummer for this band is amazing!! Anything else I might have heard him in?
Hes Danny Carey from the world famous band TOOL, one of the top 10 best drummers alive. ruclips.net/video/EnRBbZ6_kG8/видео.html
everything from tool and a lot of recitals from school kids or guest plays in different settings. Google that sh*t! It´s worth
The great Jimmy Earl on bass.
High school students practicing here!!!!
I enjoyed every second of that. Will watch again
Yes he plays anything
Was there ever a time when Danny Carey *couldn't* play something? I doubt it. The guy does whatever is needed on the drum kit.
Nice bass riff
I just realized Danny has a bit of the Ringo shoulder...
saw these guys last night, was awesome
love it...just truly love it
guitarist dope, this is like easy mode for danny
guitar player is insane....
What an awesome performance! The Duke Silver of the Drums!
Worth staying till the end. 😁
He’s so humble and always smiling!
I couldn't even imagine walking into a joint and seeing this. Thanks for sharing, this is ACE!
I so fukkin love this beyiond measure.
Tip: Playback speed 2x for a Tool experience :)
Sounds more like King Crimson if you do that
This is so great!
Love seeing this guy jam, great upload
So he CAN play normal time signatures...
funny shit haz. took him a minute to get comfortable.
I'm still not convinced....we need more video evidence to confirm 🧐
Normal time signatures...? Do you know what jazz is?
NNN CCC almost all the piece is in 4/4
I bet he’s struggling.
His smile is so priceless at the end
Saw them
Last month
Danny being like 6 and a half feet makes that look like a baby kit lol. How lucky are those guys they get to jam w Danny carey
Everyone here sobbing Danny's knob....meanwhile the other musicians are just as good and the cameraman is missing the solo spots. Guitarist smoked it and camera is still on the rhythm section putting along.
as somebody who loves Danny Carey as a drummer more than almost anybody on the planet, I completely agree with your analysis of this. LOL they actually really were killing it, even if it's not most people style of music these days. it really is a shame that's all of the concentration was on Danny.
It feels so human to see Danny miss the hi hat at 5:41
Harish Chivukula I know what you mean, lol. He’s so god-like. But actually very human. Keep in mind he plays different kits and different kit arrangements, often. He’s been playing with a floating hihat in center of his monstrous kit for TOOL for well over a decade. These jazz/funk/fusion sets are done on several kits. This is the first I’ve seen Danny use a Gretsch and first time I’ve seen him play with that rack Tom arrangenent. He never plays his Toms mounted to bass drum, ever.
That's because he's on his 5th Ted bull and vodka, feeling the groove and not giving a fuck
also at 1:32. :P
He missed the hihat on purpose to kill a mosquito flying around! :D
It's not in the normal location for him. All is forgiven.
Dope
Danny is a freaking drum God😄
His drumming on the new album is amazing
@@RicksMusicChannel518 word.
this is probably the coolest thing i've ever watched.
Next week Adam Jones is on Yo GABA GABA!
I used to watch yo gabba gabba on shrooms so that would be fucking great to see
Glad I'm not the only one that has to really feel it out when playing with a style I'm unfamiliar with! Always a good thing to do though.
Erm Danny started as a Jazz drummer...and frequently plays it and lists its influences on his many projects
It's not the Style he has to feel out, it's the drum kit that he's unfamiliar with and completely different than his own kit/set-up
Danny te admiro saludos desde México!!!
Did you know he was going to be there or was this random? Thanks for sharing.
I knew!
Doesn't surprise me one bit he has a jazz background it kinda makes sense
This is a bad ass tune. I love it!
What I've got you've got to give it to your mama
What I've got you've got to give it to your pappa
What I've got you've got to give it to your daughter

What I've got you've got to get it put it in you
What I've got you've got to get it put it in you
What I've got you've got to get it put it in you
Reeling with the feeling don't stop continue
Realize I don't want to be a miser
Confide with sly you'll be the wiser
Young blood is the lovin' upriser
How come everybody want to keep it like the kaiser
Give it away give it away give it away now
Give it away give it away give it away now

with mighty Jimmy Earl on the ba$$
Best part was at 1:14 when comes to the realization that he has a giant octopus behind him on drums and he should turn up.
amazing.
He's trying to resist playing in 7/8 then 5/8.
No like he actually fucking is though 🤣🤣
Hahahahahaha
Lmaoooooo
Felt like they were really testing his timing at 7:03 amongst other points, for funzies
...pulled 'm off nicely though 👌🏻
What's 4/4 time again?
Danny's in Duke Silver mode
That's a really heavy guitar solo for jazz! I guess that's prog and fusion for ya...
Video title cracks me up... Drums in all caps, like it's SHOCKING that Danny is actually playing, get this..... DRUMS! **gasp**
Underrated comment
*WEATHER CHANNEL INTENSIFIES*
lmfao
Dorian made land fall at 12:18
Man With Two Eyes 😂😂😂I thought I was The only person who called smooth jazz - weather channel jazz!!
This had to be the most orgasmic and scariest day ever, both at the same time. From the drum kit point of view.
I think Danny just wants to hit really hard but he's playing jazz
what a treat
Man this was fkn cool.
Easy Stuff For him
Nobody going to mention that photo of Dr Phil? Hahaha.
Lol that shit popped out as soon as I read your comment.
Lmfao you are observant because it’s right behind Danny lol dr Phil says Danny you play hard I have too my drums are made of recycled brass cymbals so fuck you dr ohill
How Awesome would that be.?! Dang.
