This was so helpful! I’m an adult autistic (diagnosed at 26) and I haven’t found any luck in finding pragmatic speech therapists in my area that work with adults. I know this video is for teaching it but perhaps you could expand on pragmatic speech in a video to help autistic adults? It’d be really appreciated and I’ve already learned a lot from this video! ☺️ thanks again! ☺️
As a brand new SLP, I feel like this is a niche I could help with. Do you think a group of adults to work with this skills would be the most helpful or starting individual session FIRST and then practicing in a group setting?
@@fakingfrench good question! It might depend on each person’s preferences perhaps? But I think it would be more helpful in a group because then every can practice on the spot conversing ☺️

I had a speech teacher when I was a kid. She would ask me what big words meant and do these tests with blocks or something. I never knew why. The things you talk about here in this video is the first time I've ever heard any of these methods.

Do you have any tips for online/in general to make it more fun? They get kind of bored after working on conversation each week
When my students get bored I love to get them and moving as much as possible! I break up drills between movement activities. I have a new playlist I just posted called movement activities for speech therapy. Here it is: ruclips.net/p/PLTcdpE7kTo4i43kVeo17EztibRre7l53n
Maybe you could do one of those activities and for your speech target practice answering a conversation prompt or giving a student a topic to initiate a conversation with you or another student? Hopefully this helps and makes sense!

As you and your followers probably know, the website "Everday Speech" has some fantastic videos on these skills; ie, "making connected comments." Unfortunately, for my Special Ed students it is very difficult for them keep that back-and-forth conversation flow going. The biggest stumbling block, for them, seems to be their inability to ask pertinent (on topic) follow up questions. They just don't seemt to be interested in what their listener thinks. [Autistic kids often have trouble with this empathetic (ie, consideration of others thoughts) skill.] Do you have any particular method you use to teach that particlar skill?

@Cynthia Reddy My comment about what I have observed with students who have autism --- that is, that they often "don't seem to be interested in what their listener think" --- follows directly from the diagnosis of autism. From the DSM-V: "Persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts, as manifested by the following, currently or by history (examples are illustrative, not exhaustive, see text):
Deficits in social-emotional reciprocity, ranging, for example, from abnormal social approach and failure of normal back-and-forth conversation; to reduced sharing of interests, emotions, or affect; to failure to initiate or respond to social interactions.
Deficits in nonverbal communicative behaviors used for social interaction, ranging, for example, from poorly integrated verbal and nonverbal communication; to abnormalities in eye contact and body language or deficits in understanding and use of gestures; to a total lack of facial expressions and nonverbal communication.
Deficits in developing, maintaining, and understanding relationships, ranging, for example, from difficulties adjusting behavior to suit various social contexts; to difficulties in sharing imaginative play or in making friends; to absence of interest in peers."
