  • I install the COBB Adjustable Shift Plate aka quick shift for Ford Focus RS!
    Made from 6061 T6 Anodized Aluminum Black with Laser Etched COBB logo, it is very light weight, strong and really looks cool!
    This mod from COBB shortens the gear shift throw by 20%, 30% or a massive 40%, depending on what YOU wish to set it to! It also makes the shift feel more positive which is pretty cool!
    Other options on the market include copies of the V1 of the COBB shift plate (this is the new and improved version that features more throw length shortening options as well as better overall shape) and full shift arm replacements such as the Mountune shift arm which gives a fixed throw shortening of 25%.
    The major downside of the other options out there that change the full shift arm is that the roll pin that holds the shift arm on has to be removed and then re-inserted to secure the new shift arm. This process can be very time consuming and tricky using a drift tool and hammer. There is also the danger of dropping the roll pin and/or damaging it making it difficult or impossible to get in or out which would leave you potentially off the road until a replacement is sought.
    The COBB adjustable shift plate / quick shift / short shift does not suffer from any of these potential issues as it is a bolt on solution, bolting onto the stock shift arm!
    A shorter throw allows for quicker, more precise gear changes, enhancing the overall driving experience!
    The installation is pretty easy and fast to get done and comes with some handy accessories in the box, including the 2 sized Allen keys / wrenches needed as well as a little tube of thread locker blue for the bolts/screws (some boxes will have Loctite and some will have Vibra Tite but they do the same job!)
    Returning to stock (if you should want or need to) is just as quick and easy as the install is as well!
    Check out how to install the part, from start to finish beginning with removing the air box to get access all the way through the install and resetting the neutral position to take into account on the change in distance that the shift cable moves!
    I chose to go with the 30% throw reduction because it is a little more than the like of Mountune but not as much as 40% which could potentially be a bit much in terms of feel and shift cable strain. Of course, it would be easy to go back in and select a different setting in the future if desired!

    Love my new Cobb Short shifter plate. Thanks to you I decided to go for the highest setting on first install and I love it! Very easy to install and no issues with missed shifts or gating.

    That shift adapter looks well thought out. Most are just a single setting, where you get the setting that suits whoever designed it. Keep us posted with how it feels and responds now.

      It is very good Robert, I checked it after about 3 weeks of use which included some good hard shifting and everything was good and tight, no issues. I have a new video landing today that talks about how it feels :)

    Hey Adam .
    Would having this fitted void a Ford extended warranty if you had a warranty claim with the gearbox in the future ?. Just wondered if you would know . Many thanks .

    Very nice. A few times i have seen on the interweb: solid shift cable ends (or whatever you call them), they replace the rubber-plastic shift cable ends with aluminum cable ends. It is said it will change the way shifting feels to a more mechanical feel. Could this be a nice future upgrade to the RS ?

  • @g3ngar04

    How come other install videos don’t require you to do the shift reset? Just curious because this is the only video I’ve seen where there’s been a shifter reset done.

    • @AdamRainey
      @AdamRainey  4 года назад +3

      It might be ok without doing it but it could also be off causing issues getting back to neutral while driving. It is so quick and easy to do, it would be silly not to since if it is off then you would have to pull the intake out again etc so why risk the hassle? If other people are making instructional videos doing this install and don't tell you to reset neutral position, they are giving you bad advice so I wouldn't trust them if I were you. I know what I am doing 🙂

    • @g3ngar04

      Adam Rainey Thank you for the quick reply. I definitely don’t want to do double the work haha

  • @g3ngar04
    @g3ngar04 4 года назад +1

    After you stick it into 4th for the shifter reset, do you put it back to neutral or leave it in 4th and don’t go back to neutral til you start the car again?

    • @AdamRainey
      @AdamRainey  4 года назад +1

      Hi Shingo, as soon as you click the white tab thing back in then that is the reset process complete. You can take it out of 4th if you wish and don't have to start the car or anything

    Why didn’t you go mountune as per usual?

    • @AdamRainey
      @AdamRainey  4 года назад

      I have the mountune in a box but decided to use the cobb instead because of its simplicity. The mountune requires some awkward hammering of the roll pin out which didn't appeal to me

    I installed my Cobb short shifter today and choose the 30% setup...After few miles, I decide to go with 20%....The reason? Well it was quite hard to change the gears and the most annoying thing was to get the lever into reverse...I had to push very hard in order to get the lever into reverse. With 20% it's all good, very easy shifting

    • @SlimChanceDubs
      @SlimChanceDubs 3 года назад

      This is a very late response and I’m not sure if you tried it already, but sometimes I have to go into 1st then to 2nd to get into reverse smoothly

  • @jtcheong

    Anyone getting a strange noise when shifting in and out of 4th gear? Not really a grinding sound, not a click either, like the shift arm is catching on something.

    • @AdamRainey
      @AdamRainey  4 года назад

      is this in general or when you have a short shift plate installed?

    • @jtcheong
      @jtcheong 4 года назад

      Adam Rainey sorry should have specified, it’s with the same shift plate. Usually only when at some sort of speed, parked/stationary is just normal.

    • @AdamRainey
      @AdamRainey  4 года назад +2

      OK, I haven't noticed any weird noises at all. All I have is some stiffness getting into 1st 2nd sometimes but it is getting easier as time goes on. If I were you, I would rip out the intake again and down in to make sure all the bolts/screws are fully tight and nothing has happened to the plate or anything like that

    • @jtcheong
      @jtcheong 4 года назад +1

      Adam Rainey yep gave that a go. Still a bit of that noise, I suspect it’s the cable being designed for a certain thrown but there’s a bit of slack now. I’ll probably just remove the shift plate if it gets worse. Something for you to listen out for as well I guess.
      Ps. Love your vids, easier to follow than most ‘official’ instructions !
