  • So, I had some free time recently, and managed to get another video together quickly. This time, we are looking at Rare's classic for the N64: Goldeneye 007. Think of this as an extra episode of Dissecting Bond, since you guys have been so patient while I've been dealing with copyright checkers on my Connery film reviews. Plus, I needed to tackle something fun before I dove into the craziness of Casino Royale (1967).

Still a top five game for me. I remember first playing it at a Target kiosk back in 1997 and it blew my mind. I FELT like Bond, something no other game had come close to doing. I never tire of playing it.

I played the N64 title endlessly growing up but it wasn’t until the Xbox release that I played the entire story on every difficulty and unlocked all the cheats (w/o using a GameShark). Totally agree it would’ve been nice to see graphical improvements but the lack of didn’t impact my enjoyment at all and now we have a modern interface into that outstanding classic experience. Great video as always!

Safe to say: not just my favorite game, but one of my favorite pieces of entertainment ever. Before ever watching a Bond movie, befire any other FPS, GoldenEye was there. Was endlessly fun to blow away enemies, but on higher difficulties I realized how vital stealth, cover, and a tactical approach are. GE is so full of depth to this day, more than most modern FPSs. It's arguably a lite immersive sim in ways.
And thats the other thing: later Bond games do way better feeling like a Bond product presentationally... but none have ever immersed me more. You feel more like Bond, given the freedom to go in, complete those objectives, and however you do it is your business. The level design feels lived in, almost nothing is scripted to make for Hollywood spectacle. YOU are Hames Bond, you have your tools, you read your briefing, you go in and get it done.
I'm sorely dissapointed in the re-release. The community has kept the game alive, modding in new levels and even making brand new games on the engine (Goldfinger 64 is great, TSWLM is currently in development). You have a 60fps mouse and keyboard mod, and in the future we'll have native windows ports done by fans. These are all better options, and says something about Microsoft, Nintendo and EON for charging money for the new versions.
Gotta say, after years of "GE dated, GE not good anymore", thank you for giving the game the recognition it deserves.

I understand the disappointment. While fans will always come up with better and more inventive ways to present the game, the publishers could have done more than just release an emulation/port, heighten the resolution and only release the game for subscription services. I think most of the blame goes to EON, as Barbara Broccoli has voiced her displeasure of pretty much all the Bond games up to this point (IO Interactive had to really work to get the job for the new game). She sees them as mindless shooters and that they don't take advantage of the Bond property. I personally believe that's pretty simple minded, and quite sad when you take into consideration what these games mean to people, especially Goldeneye. I really don't think it would have been too much to ask for the XBLA version, keep the online multi-player aspect, make it available as a standalone purchase, and then call it a day. And that's a bare minimum.
However, I'm still just so happy to have the game back on consoles (I know next to nothing about emulators, and everytime I try something more complicated than N64, I fail). It's been so long, and no other Bond game has made the transition from original to new consoles.

Like you, I was a big fan of Goldeneye N64. The remaster from last year really got me to hop back into it, and I also 100%’d it. The hardest part for me was honestly Bunker 2 00 Agent, due to needing to have good RNG and stealth. Facility 00’s speed run only took me 4 attempts, which was very lucky for me.
I know another commenter mentioned Timesplitters, and I’d recommend that you give it a try. Both TS2 and TS Future Perfect are on the Xbox store, and are very much worth the $5 price tag per game. 2 is a lot more like Goldeneye, with open ended missions and variable objectives based on difficulty. However, it’s a lot harder than it needs to be. Future Perfect is my favorite of the franchise, has a great balance of difficulty and objective placement. I was ecstatic to see them get an Xbox re-release, as playing them on a PS2 controller was borderline suffering.

I assume you were looking for the film? I'm only up to the Roger Moore era in my reviews, so Brosnan won't happen for at least a few months.

GoldenEye walked so Perfect Dark and the TimeSplitters trilogy could run.

While I prefer Goldeneye, Perfect Dark is just as good, if not better, in many ways.
Unfortunately, I have yet to try out TimeSplitters.

@@stephenjarvis534 I know right? Perfect Dark is quite possibly the best FPS of the Nintendo 64- Well, tied for that spot with Turok 2: Seeds of Evil of course. And if you haven't played TimeSplitters, definitely look into it if you have a Xbox/Gamecube/PS2. Those games are honestly the best that Free Radical/Rare's FPS team did.

What I would give to have you review and rank the Halo series...

Might be a while. I'm not the biggest of Halo fans, but Halo 2 is one of my favorites. Plus, I never bothered to own Halo 5 and Infinite, and only played them once on Games Pass.
