Hi, and welcome to my channel. Primarily, this is a place for me to upload my projects, which help me to refine my video editing skills and actually do some sound design in my spare time. The focus is mostly James Bond content, but I'll upload videos on whatever I want to talk about from pop culture in between those. Feel free to suggest topics.
5 Romantic Period Dramas for those who don't like them
Ready for a curveball? On this channel, I usually talk about James Bond, Star Wars, Batman, Star Trek, video games, and whatever else strikes my fancy. This time, we're discussing a genre that I generally don't much care for, but that doesn't mean there aren't shows I like from it. I'm sharing 5 recommendations specifically for those who usually don't watch this particular variety of costume drama. Don't worry; I still reference Bond a few times here, but I do like to branch out occasionally and try something else out, even if that means I dive into adaptations of 19th century books filled with British thespians.

Halo Ranked

Be honest, the majority of people who owned an Xbox console also owned a Halo game, and it's still the most recognizable property to have exclusive to those systems. It was like bacon and eggs, death and taxes, and politics and corruption. Xbox and Halo just go together. Since we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of Halo 2, it seemed appropriate to rank each of the 8 mainline shooters agains...
The Legend of Zelda Ranked

If there was ever a competition for the best series in video gaming, Nintendo would have two strong contenders, and I would cast my vote for the boy in tights. Several of my all time favorite video games come from Zelda, and out of the 15 I've played, 14 of them have been rewarding experiences. So, questions arise: how low will I put Twilight Princess, is Tears of the Kingdom too much like Brea...
Review of No Time to Die (2021) - The Pensive Conclusion
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.Месяц назад
After six years of waiting (part of that spent during a pandemic), No Time to Die was meant to be a celebration of Daniel Craig's era and close it out in style. As you can probably guess, the film became a polarizing one within the fandom, with any comments section containing both high praise and strong contempt. Basically, you have to see the film for yourself to know if it's up your alley or ...

Spectre had the unenviable task of both following up the first billion dollar James Bond film, and it was the film marking the long awaited return of SPECTRE and Blofeld back into the official series. So it was only natural that the creative team consisted of most of the people who made Skyfall. However, I've seen so much hate directed towards this one by both Craig's detractors and stalwarts. ...

The stunning success of 2006's Casino Royale paved the way for an easy time at the box office for the next film, but bad timing with both a studio release date of 2008 and a writer's strike loomed over Quantum of Solace, threatening to undermine its solid ideas and interesting story. Is there something buried here that's worth another look, or is it a film that is rightly derided as a poor four...

Ah, Die Another Day... The perpetually torn apart movie that serves as an end to Pierce Brosnan's run as James Bond. Released in time for the 40th anniversary of the series, this film is nothing if not big, loud and ambitious. It has a star studded cast, creative people well-versed in contemporary action cinema, and a story that covers everything from terrorists to camouflaged public figures. T...

With the final James Bond film of the 20th century, Pierce Brosnan goes after a freelance terrorist who stalks an oil heiress who shares more than a few similarities with a special someone. Pierce Brosnan's second turn as 007 had a number of things working against it, not the least being the expectations of a delighted fanbase and studio coming off the towering success that was GoldenEye. Pierce Brosnan gets his chance to make his mark on James Bond, and to be honest, it feels effortless. But does the movie that defined a generation's interest in the character (unless you count the N64 game) still hold up almost 30 years later....? Pretty much, yeah. Filled with great action, a stellar cast, and an incredible push forward, this is one of the most important Bond films ever made, ...

Review of Casino Royale (1967) - The Circus Job
I rewatched Goldfinger recently and was surprised when it occurred to me just how early and how much he’s in the film. And his plan is brilliant
You mentioned that the producers would make CS 2006 faithful to the book Casino Royale. This film has very few elements from the book, Bond is completely different person and only a few elements (the casino gambling and Vesper's betrayal), the rest is as far from Fleming's book as Moonraker.
The first and last film in the series that I've seen that features Craig as Bond. I don't understand how the audience accepted this clumsy, ugly and uncharismatic guy as James Bond. Craig is the antithesis of Bond and no amount of fancy clothes can make him look elegant. As for the film itself, it's just a generic and pretentious action film, full of clichés and that takes itself too seriously. I hope the next actor has some charisma and class, qualities that Craig never had. Besides, this movie insults Ian Fleming's character. In this movie, Bond is a guy who at 40 doesn't know how to dress, and had to learn from a woman (!). He's just another character who uses the name James Bond, a spinoff of Jason Bourne. The only scene in this nightmare that makes sense in CS is the one where Craig is mistaken for a hotel valet.
As confusing as DAF's script may be, I consider it much better and more interesting than the first two films with Roger Moore. DAF is an unpretentious and light film, and that's why it's fun. It's the opposite of the films starring the insufferable Daniel Craig. In my opinion, it was a mistake not to have trimmed Sean Connery's eyebrows in DAF; it made him look older and less elegant than Bond requires.
I once had OHMSS as a ringtone and a gentleman standing in line ahead of me at a bank turned and smiled when my phone rang. I LOVE hearing John Barry's scores from the best Bond to cheesy entries like King Kong '76 and Disney's The Black Hole. Oh yeah. Love it all.
I have just finished a rewatch of A View To A Kill. I agree with much of what was said in this video. One thing that struck me this time watching the movie is how much the San Francisco investigation part is of TV quality. The camera work outside the action sequences is very lazy and is a stereotype of 80s TV. With scenes at Stacey's or City Hall pre Zorin entrance, you could think easily that you are watching an episode of Dallas or Dynasty. The photography maybe accentuating this feeling and setting the plot in the USA doesn't help. By The Way I feel Bond investigating in the USA rarely work for me. Like there is suddenly a lack of charm that Asia, Africa, South America or Europe can on, the other hand effortlessly bring to the franchise.
I knew Christopher Lee just played himself.
I'm partial to Dr. Evil and his Cat that will take over the world.
No time to die ranked above skyfall? Insanity.
I never understood the plot of octopussy and i watched it like 10 Times. For me its one of my least favorite. That and dr. no, it maybe sacrilegious to say that, but I think this was not a real James Bond yet
No time to die shouldn’t be on the list doesn’t even deserve LAST place!
My most hated bond film was casino royale, and i ought to love it, since the villain is mads mikkelsen, a countrymen of mine... But my god, i was bored shitless during the entire thing.. I really have a hard time understanding how you put thay before goldebeye, which is my farvorite.. But i get it, its your list, thanks for making a list regardless 👍 But yeah, id put the new casino royale around 15 or so. Maybe even higher.
@christianrasmussen3889 Well, I have more in-depth reviews elaborating on each of these placements now on the channel. I never expect to "convince" people of anything (everyone has their own experience which is just as valid as my own), but I try in about 30 minutes for that video to explain why I love that film. But yeah, GoldenEye is a solid choice for your favorite. It's pretty fantastic.
I thought Die Another Day was quite ridiculous and fun.
I know this won't be popular, but all Pierce needed was a cig every now and again in a couple scenes to push his Bond even further.
@@mistermetaverse7267 I kind of like that he didn't, but I always thought his stance against was a bit of a double standard given that he had a cigar in Die Another Day.
Totally agree with your #1. She made that movie, which was great already, into a gut punch. One that gave the franchise the push that it needed to continue on.
TND is a solid second outing as Bond after Goldeneye. Great Gadgets and a Q scene, A fantastic remote car sequence and motorbike chase Michelle Yeoh is a welcome Bond equal in a modern 90s world, the biggest highlight for me is Jonathan Pryce’s performance as Elliot Carver, he chews the scenery, he’s plays a great over the top Bond villain. David Arnold’s score really shines in this film and is my second favourite composer behind John Barry. I agree KD Lang’s “Survivor “ is a better Bond song over Sheryl Crow’s version. This Bond film was my childhood and my first one at the Cinema, (I was 8 😂), I played the PS1 game to death when it came out.
1. Sir Roger Moore (without a shadow of a doubt) 2. Pierce Brosnan 3. Sean Connery The rest I don't care for
V8 Vantage for me for the win! Second is DB5 and third Lotus Esprit in red❤
Stromberg is far better than Drax
no Renard?
Once again thanks a million for an awesome review. I enjoy watching Die Another Day with my 10 year old son, who loves it because it’s so bonkers. It’s fun to see what things he sees and likes ❤
For viewers who are normally averse to these films, I always start by recommending 'Ever After' (great call), 'The Young Victoria,' 'The Affair of the Necklace,' 'The Wings of the Dove,' 'Little Women' (the Christian Bale version), 'The King's Speech,' 'The Importance of Being Earnest,' 'Barry Lyndon,' 'The Age of Innocence,' 'The Aftermath' (2019), 'Magic in the Moonlight' and 'Horseman on the Roof' to ease you into the most accessible films (also some of the best films) of the genre.
How does Jaws lose to Red Grant and Xenia... Jaws is synonymous with 007. But I agree with Xenia in 2nd.
Pierce Brosnan will always be my favorite Bond
32:18 Scotland has appeared in Bond movies a number of times both as real filming locations & as stand-ins for other countries. FRWL: Loch Craignish & Lochgilphead. Both were filming locations used to portray the Turkish coast during the boat chase/explosion & the helicopter hill chase. TSWLM: Gareloch near Helensburgh. Faslane’s naval base is used when Roger Moore is seen in full naval uniform. It’s on the doorstep of my hometown. TWINE: Eilan Donan castle is used as the Scottish MI6 HQ after the London HQ has been bombed. The visitors centre there is very proud to have been chosen as a location & there is a plaque there noting its use in the filming of TWINE. SF: Glen Coe & Glen Etive are shown with the DB5 driving up the A82 & the shot of Bond & M on the single track road is one I’ve taken American friends to visit when I gave them a tour of all the Bond locations (other than the FRWL one as it’s now inaccessible). They loved being in the numerous Bond filming locations. This was prior to NTTD: Cairngorms National Park which stood in for Norway in the scenes where Logan is giving chase to Bond, Madeleine & Mathilda.
16:27 What I don’t understand in the Craig era, & between both SF & SP is that Bond loses his parents when he’s very young - a child really. So why if he’s become a ward of Blofeld’s father, Hannes Oberhauser has the family home, Skyfall not been sold in order to give Bond a trust fund. Also why would Kincade still be in the employ of the family so many years after the death of Bond’s parents? Why would Bond take M there & somehow expect there to be weapons that could defend M if his plan was to lure Silva there? Then there’s the fact that Silva is always a step ahead of Bond in everything (London Underground crash & even taking a helicopter to Skyfall all the way up in Glencoe, Scotland). In the very next film Silva & even Quantum become pawns of Blofeld & Spectre. And by NTTD both Blofeld & Spectre are seen off & not really because Bond has saved the world from them, but because Savin designed it as such. It makes Bond pretty ineffective as the world’s best spy & makes Craig’s run the worst for me. What had a promising start was wasted, & may possibly have damaged the franchise in a way that Star Wars or Indiana Jones is now lessened. The standalone missions with only vague nods to continuity was a far better way to ensure the continuation of cinema’s longest running film series. SF doesn’t make sense in the final act in Scotland.
Superman is not from Earth. Which is why he has no human fallibilities. I wish people would stop nitpicking.
I don’t necessarily agree with everything but it says a lot that I actually watched this entire 45 minute video (in multiple sittings) when usually I won't watch any over 20 minutes. You did a really good job.
I think Nick Nack needs to be higher. He’s memorable and plays multiple key roles in the plot. I also think he’s a good example of why “character death” is less important to me. So of the very best henchmen don’t even die.
To me, you can be either a henchman or a Bond girl, but not both. The line is tricky. Xenia is a henchman. Miranda and Volpe are Bond girls.
Your summation of Roger Moore’s tenure is spot on. Given the choices of FRWL vs GF my choice would (normally) be GF. I go to the movies to see the good guys win, & the bad guys get their butt handed to them. Real life unfortunately doesn’t have enough moments like that - especially today when every country in the world seems to have more than it’s fair share of the bad guys winning, while the good guys are the ones getting their butts kicked constantly. So for me Roger’s era gave some brief hope & at the very least 2 hours of fun escapism. I appreciate every actor who takes on the role of Bond, but Roger was a great ambassador & if not for his tenure Bond could have finished in the 70’s or 80’s. This series is developing nicely, even if I don’t always fully agree with your take, I am appreciative that you acknowledge that the Bond fandom can fall into different camps & that it is not necessarily wrong to have a differing taste. My taste (as I’m the same age as the films) is for Classic Bond (Sean, Roger, even Pierce), although I liked Grittier Bond (Dalton). I initially liked Craig in CR but grew increasingly tired & frustrated by the constant depressive emo Bond which I found wearying. I also worry that the current trend on the Bond films may have damaged the series irreparably. I can’t imagine Roger or Pierce ever being so ungrateful for giving them a pay check & a career to be proud of. Thanks Sir Roger.
I love Sheena Easton’s song in this but cannot abide the score. It has dated this movie so much but worse it just didn’t sit right with me as I watched it in the cinema. It took me out of the movie altogether, whereas others have managed to give Barry a run for his money with their Bond scores (George Martin & Marvin Hamlisch). It’s my least listened to LP & CD of the soundtracks (yes I’m that old). Plus there’s Bibi the skater & that whole subplot gives me the creeps. There’s ways to address Bond ageing other than that storyline. Big “Eeeewwwww”. So, nope not a fan of the film. I’m in the team that will put MR above FYEO.
I’m working my way through this tremendous review series over the last couple of days & I was going to wait until finishing the entire series, but I have to comment on this one. For me I will defend Moonraker until my dying breath for what it achieved. When I saw it in the cinema when it was originally released of course I drew comparisons to both YOLT & TSWLM. I did initially have reservations over the title song which wasn’t written for Bassey but seemed Barry could have gotten Donna Summer who he worked with on “The Deep”. Summer would’ve been a natural for that disco version over the end credits, but as you say Bassey elevated the song. So much so that it has been a grower for me over the years & is easily in my top ten if not top five Bond Songs. For me this is one of Barry’s finest scores & I can’t wait for the La La Land Records extended release on cd later this month. I could go on at length about how the movie is so much more than “the one where Bond goes into space”. The film was the highest earning Bond film for a while until, as you explain, the Brosnan era. Not a bad record. Yes, it’s campy, lighthearted fun but it has a solid villain that’s a step up from Stromberg. Drax gets some of the most memorable lines of any Bond villain since Auric Goldfinger & he’s more menacing than Stromberg. Jaws makes his comeback & yes he’s played more for laughs but he was a favourite of the kids so I’m ok with the change there. Holly Goodhead was a great pick for a Bond Girl name & Lois Chiles is again a step up from Barbara Bach. It’s Bond, it’s not Shakespeare. It’s meant to be fun. It’s a product of its time yet for me it has held up better than many others. It’s not put me off continuing with your series of reviews as I have enjoyed your critiques & opinions, as well as (for the most part) the style in editing & many little side tidbits of information. Keep up the excellent work. I’ll be a little sorry when I get to complete them as I’ve enjoyed them all so far.
@AndyG13GLA Don't feel too bad. I love seeing champions of the underdogs, and it only adds to the richness of the fandom. I too am stupidly excited for the expanded soundtrack release. I've bought all of them so far and they've been a huge help in the underscore to these videos. After being quite disappointed with Goldfinger's offering, Moonraker was a treat I wasn't expecting and I bought my copy immediately upon seeing the email. In the future, I'd love to do a video highlighting La La Land's efforts on these scores.
A feminist ranking this is
Excellent research & commentary. Well done! Spot on with your insight. FYEO is a top 5 return to watch Bond films.
The score for this is just plain dull.
No way.
In my opinion Pride and Prejudice 2005 is the best adaptation of the book. I’ve seen both BBC mini series as well, but the 2005 adaptation is just way better. It might not be the most faithful adaptation, but if that’s what you’re looking for, just read the book. Thanks for the recommendations, I’ve see 3/5 from your list, so I’m gonna go watch North and South now (just saw that it’s on Prime).
“[Armitage] immediately drew comparisons to Colin Firth’s Mr. Darcy from the 1995 Pride & Prejudice miniseries, though I personally think Armitage comes out on top in that fight.” He also came on top of Lee Pace while they were filming The Hobbit-BOOM. 🤜🌟🤛 In seriousness, I love the ‘04 North and South tons. That ending in the train station was completely fabricated for the miniseries, and it serves the story far better than the ending of the novel, where Margaret stays in her aunt’s home and waits for Mr. Thornton to come to her there, which he does, but the literal “meeting each other halfway” ending is so much more romantic and fitting.
You should not even count the first casino Royale.
@jennifertimlin1371 Quality or genre makes no difference to me. If it's a cinematic film starring a character named James Bond and takes inspiration from an Ian Fleming book, I count it. Plus, I counted the other unofficial film, so why not include CR 1967?
A view to a kill gets better with age.
Gilded age. More entertaining than what it seems.
Not what I was expecting from you, sir, but this was a very fun pleasant surprise!
Ever After is simply Wonderful! Just a warm smart intelligent movie, and the absolute best acting Drew Barrymore has EVER DONE!
Grunt birthday party is the best skull, agreed.
It's dangerous to go alone! Take this.
as soon as I saw the title, it made me think of a period drama I loved despite not being into this kind of thing: The Draughtsman's Contract en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Draughtsman%27s_Contract it's also the only time I bought a movie soundtrack that was all instrumental orchestral music
It's a no from me, dawg.
That's fine. Some people won't vibe with this genre, and there's no shame in that. However, these are some I would recommend in case you change your mind.
@@stephenjarvis534 It's a done video however.
Nice. Although the genre is typically aimed at people like me, I've rarely enjoyed them. But it's made me curious. Thank you for the thoughtful presentation.
Digging the list! This is a genre that I’ve not watched a ton of, but I’m not opposed to dipping my toes in deeper.
@Paul_Whaley Hope you stumble across something you like. I promise; you'll get one more Bond video before the end of this year.
