There seem to be some kind of confusion around the damage types that you can change your spells into. As a result of this, I did some research.
Order of the Scribes possible damage types (these types of damage are mentioned one way or another, which is the requirement, in the respective levels of spell).
Level 9:
Fire, Force, Psychic, Acid, Lightning, Poison, Cold, Necrotic
Level 8:
Necrotic, Fire, Radiant, Lightning, Cold, Acid, Necrotic, Poison, Psychic, Force
Level 7:
Fire, Radiant, Necrotic, Force, Acid, Lightning, Poison, Cold
Level 6:
Lightning, Necrotic, Force, Cold, Radiant, Acid, Fire, Poison, Psychic
Level 5:
Force, Radiant, Poison, Cold, Psychic, Necrotic, Fire, Acid, Lightning, Thunder
Level 4:
Necrotic, Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, Thunder, Psychic, Radiant
Level 3:
Fire, Necrotic, Acid, Cold, Lightning, Thunder, Psychic, Radiant
Level 2:
Fire, Acid, Cold, Lightning, Poison, Psychic, Thunder, Necrotic
Level 1:
Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, Poison, Thunder, Force, Lightning
Cantrips:
Acid, Thunder, Necrotic, Fire, Cold, Poison, Psychic, Lightning, Force
From what I understand of the phrase "When you cast a wizard spell with a spell slot, you can temporarily replace its damage type with a type that appears in another spell in your spellbook, which magically alters the spell's formula for this casting only. The latter spell must be of the same level as the spell slot you expend", I understand is as the very mentioning of another type of damage (not necessarily a spell that *deals* damage) is enough to allow you to change the spell. If this is indeed the correct interpretation, then the list I have put together above is accurate.
I believe you are correct on this... and, wow! Thank you for putting this list together. This is very helpful. Sorry it took me so long to respond. I appreciate your work here on this. THanks again! Cheers!
Gotta watch out those quiet scribes!
Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely!
Didn’t think about how cool a Dragonborn would be for this. Gonna use this
Fantastic! Glad I could help. :-)
I like the name, in Danish it means “Thunder Lightning”
Thank you Christian! I like to browse other languages to find character names that fit my theme. And, Torden-Lyn was a result of that. I went through a lot of languages and I loved the Danish translation. I am glad that you noticed this! Cheers!
You can modify non damage spells as well like Protection from Energy to give other types of resistance like slashing and bludgeoning. To get bludgeoning you can take Tidal Wave or Erupting Earth.
It can also be used on absorb elements but it won't affect the trigger. For example if a fire giant attacks you with a flaming axe then you can resist slashing damage and deal cold damage with your next attack.
There are several spells that give you a useless resistance( not relevant to the situation) like radiant resistance only scribe Wizards can make useful.
Great input here, thanks for taking the time to include this. Cheers!
Im going to make this a monster to be a underling of a blue dragon.
Awww yeah. That sounds fun. Cheers, my friend!
I did have an elf wizard order of scribes, WITH a familiar. She was a priestess of Alathrien Druanna, not cleric. She had a few levels in rune knight and prestige class rune scribe. It was very interesting to play her. I've been thinking doing something similar for strixhaven, your video came quite handy. thank you!
Multiclass with Rune Knight really sounds fun! Also, will you be playing Strixhaven! I hope you like it. Lemme know how it goes. Cheers!
With strixhaven you can go witherbloom for some insaine single target inflict wounds rolls
Huzzah!
This reminds me of my own build. Our Dm has a special feat to change spells to any damage type so I took Tempest 6 Evocation 2 Sorcerer 12 so I could make wildmagic fireballs that were maxed out and powerful. Also great to turn Tidal wave to lightning try it!!!!
I chose Wood Elf Quandrix Student Scribe Wizards for a different reason, Guiding Bolt becoming a wizard Spell, applicable for changing types and is a spell attack. I went for a Spell Attacker Specialist, changing the few spell attacks in the game to say, Bludgeoning to start, with the Crusher Feat. Moving things 5-ft and eventually stack Elven Accuracy so criticals become more frequent, that's where guiding Bolt comes in. Self sufficient if the team didn't use it, on a Crit, advantage for all attacks on it until my next turn.
👍🏻
is there anything wrong with starting as the cleric i have a roleplay idea...of a charecter who realizes the god he is cleric to isnt all that kind.....aand starts snooping trying to get to the bottom of it! after level 2 they stop relying on that god basically and start focusing on knowledge primarily thus wizard :) continuing to look for truth everywhere and revealing it to all who will listen ! a reporter XD
I love this roleplay idea! And yes, I don't think there would be any issue starting off with two levels of Cleric. Sounds fun to me. Thank you for watching. Cheers!
I would have started with Cleric. It would have given me 2 more hit points and I would have started with a better AC, which would mean that I wouldn't have to take Mage Armor, allowing me to take Identify.
I would have placed the 9 in Str. The 9 does nothing for Cha, but in Str it increases our carrying capacity.
Why not Half plate? It gives you a base AC of 15.
I probably would have taken Int to 20.
Those are all solid opitions with good reasoning, for sure. Don't forget to pick up that 100gp pearl when you are ready for Identify ;-) . And, absolutely, I dig half plate. I'm with you on that. Thanks for watching! :-)
Why do you keep telling people the wrong way to use the damage type feature. You keep saying it's the same level. THAT IS WRONG. if you cast a spell and change damage type the damage type MUST BE FROM THE LEVEL SPELL SLOT YOU USE.
Example you cast magic missile. First level spell slot. Here you use first level spells in your book to change type of damage. But if you upcast you must use the damage type of the slot used. Example magic missile upcast using third level spell slot. Then damage type is restricted to the spells of third level in your spellbook. NOT FIRST LEVEL, YOU USED 3rd LEVEL SPELL SLOT.
You are correct. To change damage types, the wizard must match a damage type in their book that has a level equal to the level of the spell slot used. Having Fireball in the spell book would allow a Magic Missle upcast at 3rd level to use Fire instead of force.
I feel like I explained it correctly @25:15 . I also mentioned for this particular build that if we upcast a Magic Missle at 2nd level, we would not be able to change damage types because we do not have 2nd level spells in our spellbook yet. A direct consequence of multiclassing to Cleric 2. BUT, I do have to admit, I could have done a much better job of explaining how it works. I definitely could have used better terms.
I would like to PIN your comment to help other people, so, if you could you edit your comment so that it doesn't look like you are angry and yelling at me, that would be awesome, lol.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention, I do appreciate it. Cheers!
