Expecting the world to treat you well because you are a good person is like expecting the bull to not charge you because you are a vegetarian!!!

Yeah , exactly , just because you did everything right in life doesn't mean the world and society will treat you well.
Life and the world don't give a crap how well or much you worked. A lot of college drop outs , crooks and lazy people have everything go their way in life, even if they don't give a crap about anything or anybody ,so go figure !

Totally agree with all you say here. One thing to add/go further is that people get depressed when they have those recurrent thoughts and feel like there's nothing that they can do about it. It's the loss of hope or a better future that make people so depressed and consider suicide. As Nietzsche said "He who has a Why to live for can bear almost any How."

As humans we generally choose the path of least resistance. We tend to be cautious and or fearful of change, this is why it’s so hard for people to fight chronic depression, because depression is linked to many things which effect our thought process. Our location and environment, our jobs and workplaces, the people we associate ourselves with, it all shapes our perception and ultimately sense of self. Depression, while dark, can be a great way to discover the things in life that make you unhappy and change them so you can find your happiness, but it’s a long and uncomfortable process mentally and emotionally. Just like the child who’s figuring everything out for the first time again :)

I think I get it. Tell me if I’m wrong. Things had been going downhill for me for a while. Work had become unbearable. Bad management, unappreciative supervision, benefits and amenities were being taken away left and right. Everyone’s attitude and morale was in a deep downward spiral. Many of us wished we could just walk out on a daily basis. All I wanted to do was sleep for multiple reasons. Then I injured my knee. No one likes to be injured or sick but that knee injury was a blessing in disguise. It gave me time to clear my head and get a fresh perspective. I was able to think about where I had come from, where i was and where I wanted and needed to be. I started to see a few things falling into place. My life was about to change big time. After 2 surgeries and several months of PT, I went back to my normal job. Had to for a while. Even with my new plans and goals, and my fresh perspective, I was falling back into the same pit because I had put myself back into the same atmosphere that had caused my depression in the first place. I still had to work out a couple of things but I kept my eye on the finish line and as soon as I could I got the hell outta dodge and I never looked back. Sorry for the cliches. Now I’m not telling anyone to quit your job. This is just my story. What I will say is that anyone who is overwhelmed, stressed or depressed needs to stand back, figure out what is messing with them and fix it. It can be done. I’m now training for my dream job which I should have figured how to make happen a long time ago. But that’s beside the point. Whatever your issues may be, things can get better.

Thank you for putting this into perspective. I have suffered from depression with melancholic features and anxiety since I was 12. I'm 19 now. I used to self harm I attempted suicide at 15 but I have come out the other side okay. I'm now pursuing a career in fitness and looking at going around to local schools to talk about mental health. I want to be able to help people understand what they're feeling.

Ok serious question. You mentioned ADD. What’s up with all these young people on Adderall ? MANY people take these drugs to do better on tests in college and how does that screw up their brains when they aren’t taking them consistently? I’m talking med students in top schools. They take them for better performance and to have the edge in weight loss also. I’m not saying that some people don’t need these drugs but I KNOW many are taking them for performance and weight loss. I’ve even heard med students complain about these students with stimulants having an unfair edge. Did you run into this much in school? Thoughts ...

Doc... greetings! I'm reading the book you suggested, "The Subtle Art of not....", great book. Thanks for that. People who are suicidal or have SI, must understand that it is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. I see PTs everyday in my facility (Level II Trauma center but deals with Level 1 like it 'aint no thang) , we're the closest trauma center within a 70 mile radius, so we get the real deal Holyfield. We receive Baker or Marchment Acts on the daily, all day, often requiring the announcement, "Dr. Love, ER... Dr. Love ER... Dr. Love ER (protocol code) to contain/prevent the patient from not only harming us, but themselves as well. It's tough. I agree 100% with your insight.

Watching your videos prompted me to write a letter to my PCP, back in early May. I see him more than most people, because I have rheumatoid arthritis and its related issues. Since he is the clinic director of a medical school affiliated clinic and also is a professor at that school, I often worry about his mental state from stress. When I was in RN school, a physician I was working with killed herself after our patient (new mother) died during surgery.
Anyway, I wrote a letter expressing thanks and appreciation for doing things for me, such as authorizing medication refills, working me in for a sick appointment between other patients, and filling out paperwork... just to name a few. I'm pretty certain he read it, though he did not mention it at the appointment I had this past Thursday. I do thank and express appreciation to him in person. I just thought it might be good to write it out (letter was handwritten) for him to read on days he needs a boost and feel like he is important.
I will say that the day after I mailed it out, I thought "I hope he does not think I'm nutty or wasting my time!" LOL! 😮😮😂😂😂

what suicides ? the MO was amazingly the same.......Bourdain was a very tall man and the logistics were, well, more than suspicious. Spade ? please , who does not know she was " offed " ? someone in her funky , satanic ritual group, decided it was her time to hang on a door knob........Do basic research instead of watching MSNBC and CNN and the other fake news. They confuse you enough, to make a video while you are driving, like the guy who is posting this topic.

Dr. Parker, I think the data you are looking for is CBT. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Highly efficacious. The reminder on the physiology of neural pathway habit and the dark thought empathy were really very helpful. Thank you. Have a good weekend Dr. Parker!

It is strange to me how people "diagnose" the underlying cause of depression. For example if a disabled person is depressed they "diagnose" the depression as being due to the disability. However someone might be congenitally disabled and very happy but then becomes depressed years later. There is a major difference beteen unhappy and depressed.

It depends on the culture and religion. Western European cultures and their derivatives view suicide as a negative. Since the prevailing belief system in these cultures is that there is nothing beyond matter and energy then of course killing yourself is viewed as the ultimate tragedy because there is nothing else. With this emphasis on the material body and its perpetuation, suicide shocks us and saddens us and we attempt to prevent it.
In other cultures and religions, suicide is a door to a spiritual realm where the fleshly mortal coil is released and you enter into a dimension of greater awareness. Some cultures and religions state suicide is a positive where you atone for past mistakes, errors and shameful behavior. Thus, suicide is a release from the limitations of materialism. It balance out the imbalance created in life in a typical Yin Yang form.

Ironic isn't it that they knew this 2000 years ago? The Bible says... What you speak with your mouth and believe in your heart shall come to pass. I don't think it's talking about casting spells or anything like that I think it's more introspective. Like you said things that you say or how you think repeatedly over time has an effect on the outcome. Like the cycles you talked about.

PS YOU may be able to focus and provide the world with your opinions WHILE DRIVING. But surely if you thought about it for even a moment - as a friend or family member - how would you feel? (We are used to "ordinary" people saying all kinds of things. But as a doctor - I do believe you do have a higher "DUTY OF CARE"!!!!
