Great video! I wish I had watched this earlier this month. I had the oil filter housing gasket fail and it caused the belt below it to snap and shred. Now it's in the shop to see if there's any shredded belt material that got sucked into the engine. Note to self and any other N54 owners, don't ignore an oil leak.
I just bought a 335is. And thank you for telling me about the piece for the oil filter cap. $12 on Amazon for the whole oil filter cap set & $98 dollars from BMW. $50 for the labor & free if I do 10 left twists and 10 right twists right after that……so guess how much I saved!!!! 😂😂😂😂 I am the goat
I think there was quite a few things that you honestly didn’t have to remove at all like the engine support brace and other connectors/ vacuum lines but hey still nice tutorial!
Doing this today on my 2009 535, leaked enough over time to soften my upper radiator hose and cause a coolant leak, so replacing that as well. Already replaced my belt and front main seal earlier this year (thankfully the belt only got pulled into the motor a bit and was able to extract it in one piece!!). That is a horrible design flaw with these motors (the chronically leaking oil housing gasket as well)!!
This video is soooo helpful. I’m going to replace this part real soon and I know this video will help. Thank you so much for your detailed video. Also, just a rant about BMW. ALL OF THIS DAMN WORK JUST TO GET TO ONE DAMN BOLT. THANKS BMW! I Love my NA Miata, so easy to work on.

A bit late, but new BMW owner trying this myself. Do you replace the oil filter with a new one or reuse? Do you change the oil during this as well? If you loosen the intake manifold to get the housing out, doesn’t that break the seals? Shouldn’t you just remove it and replace the seals vs chancing that developing a leak too?
You can re use unless you're changing your oil at the same time. Depending on how long its been the last time you replaced your manifold gaskets, it wouldn't be a bad idea since they're not expensive. I've seen many, many videos where they just put the manifold back on though.
Does the hose to the throttle body need to be fully removed, or is it possible to just disconnect it at the intake manifold and pull the manifold? Or is it to difficult to finesse the manifold back in later? Great video. Thanks.
I paid a BMW mechanic $400 to do in his garage. I think that is fair because that is about what I'd charge to do it myself now. Nothing is super fun on a BMW.
Jason,Bro you are to young to have all this knowledge!Lol, I know someone is hiding behind the camera and telling you what to say.Seriously thanks for your time and hard work.
And in some cases this oil leak can actually cause an even bigger problem. When the belt becomes so slippery that it comes off, it shreds behind the crank pully and can destroy your oil seal and even will force pieces of the belt through the crank seal into your oil pan!!! Removing and cleaning the oil pan at the dealership is about $900 I think, because of the big amount of labor .......
So i'm not draining my coolant before i do the replacement, I know i'll lose a little coolant from the hose, but when i put it back together --- am i in the clear to drive it 15-20 minutes to my auto shop to have oil and coolant change? Or do i have to fill it up with more coolant?
My guy is going to charge me $600 and unfortunately I'm going to have to pay him because I'm 6000 miles from my garage and tool box. At least it's not $1300!

I was told the bolts holding the housing is made out of aluminum and have to be replaced everytime because they warp after being torqued the first time. Can you confirm that?
Shop manual says that aluminum one-use bolts are painted blue from BMW. That doesn't mean someone didn't work on the car and you have ones that aren't blue... but if you know the cars history was dealer serviced, I think if they aren't blue you can reuse them.

it's 5 hours of labor plus parts. My mechanic is charging me about $600 but there's another guy in this thread that was going to get charged $1300! I'd say if you can get a shop to do the job for less than $500, you're not getting taken advantage of.
I did mine and have alot of engine codes, boost sensor, crankshft position sensor and thermal oil level sensor. Can antifreeze get into the mix changing this gasket.
Specifically citing the N54 engine. The vacuum tube is connected to two small vacuum lines that are right above the third bolt holding down the housing, there is no room to push them aside towards the manifold. The Oxygen sensor connectors are removed to allow the intake manifold to slide backwards a few inches, because that is the only way that you can access that third bolt on the oil cooler housing.
I have been working on BMW s for a while. This is the most " mechanic abuse" that I have seen from that manufacturer. With some exceptions the world is at your feet when you are in the design stages, but how this bolt ended up below the intake manifold with no access to remove it, without hours of work [ specifically referencing the 335i convertible ] is beyond me to reason [ Year 2004 to 2013 ]. And the Damn Housing is always leaking and dripping on the moving serpentine belt causing it to prematurely fail, slinging oil into the alternator and across the whole front of the engine. Oh BROTHER!!!
I have a 2009 bmw 335i and I just noticed I have oil on coolant car is not overheating could this be the problem. The car only has 109k miles I hope it’s not the head gasket
Bro no need to take off the charge pipe completely. Or the vacuum line from the manifold to the diverter valves. If you break that line build your own. I did that when I had to completely remove the intake mani to do the starter on my 335i.
Make sure to change your oil after doing this or it could damage the vvt solenoids and those are usually $100 a piece. You’ll know they are bad when the car give you a bunch different codes after this job
I know nothing about BMW'S I inherited a e90 335i from my father who passed. Car only has 80k but has had lots items replaced. Trying to keep it in tip top pristine condition. Just recently replaced the fuel pressure regulator assembly due to a cracked housing. Looks like I too have a slight leak coming from this oil filter housing. My question is I don't need new intake manifold gaskets? Also no need for any type of high temp gasket sealer on that housing with the gasket? Thank you.
Hi Name is John I have question? I was told that I need to replace my head thermo filter? If so what does one look like and do you have a video on this change out. Thanks
J Williams if what you’re talking about is the cylinder head - thermostat coolant hose, it’s the one he talks about being corroded inside the head. It starts just underneath the oil filter housing and the connector has 2 bolts making it look like Mickey Mouse ears 🐭
@@buzzyinurface The thing to do when you replace that hose is get the metal replacement hose bib to attach to the head and then clamp on the hose rather than put back on more of BMW's limited-life-span plastic. There is info on bimmer forums about it. If you were told to replace the hose, then do it because it will explode spontaneously and you'll loose all your coolant on the road. As far as filters go, I don't think there is one between the head and the thermostat... so if someone used those terms for you (and you didn't just get it mixed up youself) I wouldn't let that person near my car.
Hey I have question.? I found gas in my oil a litre more when I changed my oil. Any idea how it got in. Pressure is perfect. Piston wise.! Please let me know.
I recently took my 2008 n54 to get the gasket replaced but i noticed my water pump kept running after i would shut off the car.. i open the coolant resevoir and notice oil in there .. any idea what these guys couldve done wrong?? Also the hose at minute 6:45 leaked all my coolant and there is a tiny oil leak that keeps coming from one of the hose/pipes at minute 18:17 i think its the one that goes to the inner cooler pipe ..anything helps thanks!
Sounds like the problem was the gasket, however, the coolant wasnt drained and replaced. Its always a good idea to drain and replace the coolant if you are opening the system up.
If this gasket is leaking, will oil run from it down to the left along the ledge of the head of the engine? Came across an oil leak im assuming is coming from the oil filter, but i cant tell 100%. The way the oil runs along the head makes me think the actual head gasket (not valve cover gasket) is leaking, but it does look as if its coming from the oil filter. Help would be much appreciated!
hi! can you halp me ? i have N42 engine then is warmed up and when i start drivin un low rpm 1000 -1500. i goes lose power un jumping rpm ? i get to servis ho got a same car and nothing . maybe You know the problem.
check your vacuum lines. On my 335i, I replaced most of my vacuum lines and noticed boost lag was minimal and my car went through the RPMs smoother as well as my fuel economy went up. If that doesnt work, replace your mass airflow sensor. If you had an N54, I would tell you to replace your charge pipe to a metal 1
Hey I have a bmw e90 x drive and I just recently hit a tire at night causing severe damage to my car I haven’t had insurance since the pandemic and they aren’t able to help me so I’m force to seek my own repairs I’m already experienced and I just noticed my coolant had oil inside I have no leaks but that night my car shut down and trying to make it home and it shut down on my street I left it till the morning to cool off and drove it back to the house and left it there till I figure out everything wrong i watched your video on the oil filter housing gasket and I think that’s the issue im not sure also my engine is brand new 4K miles that I drove I was wondering if you could guide me in the right direction or have any helpful advice as I take on this task I’m getting ready to start a channel just like you I recently got approved to sponsor parts so i will be doing upgrades and how to if you could please get back to me it will help a lot thank you
Good luck.. me too i have a 2008 335xi that just hit 90,000 miles The previous owner did not attend to the oil leaks and kept putting in alot of stop leak.. you cant do these on these motors.. i recently did 5 light oil changes with sea foam.. My horse power grew and grew i know have my oil filter housing gasket leaking and my valve cover gasket.. Thank god its not my oil pan .. Doing my OFHG this weekend I saw a video on the N54 where you dont need to mess with the manifold.. You just need a swivel with yout E10. I will let you know how tgat goes
Hopefully someone can help me out here. I have a 135i. The oil filter housing makes a whining noise when i turn on the car. It mostly does it at a cold start. It doesn’t leak or anything. Not sure what it could be. Thanks in advance.
Cheap oil filters do that sometimes. Replace the oil filter with a MANN oil filter. Noise should go away. Make sure all parts are present and nothing is missing or broken inside the oil filter housing. And replace the small and large O rings, inside the oil filter housing too.

Thank you.
Khem Kush I heard another guy mention no need for the gasket sealer if it’s an oem sealer. You probably also want to use new bolts...
Great video @ 6:43 You talk about a hose that has 2 10mm bolts holding it in and it gets corroded. What part is that?
Thats connected to the thermostat
George Yacoub what’s the name of it?
Here for the next person to ever watch lol. Coolant Outlet hose to thermo
Hi
Name is John
I have question?
Thank you for this video.
Does anyone know if I have to change coolant when doing this for 6sp n54 335 ?
Hey I have question.? I found gas in my oil a litre more when I changed my oil. Any idea how it got in. Pressure is perfect. Piston wise.! Please let me know.
its blowing by the piston rings on the compression stroke
at 8:44 you mention missing a center piece in the oil filter. do you have a part number for that? i cant find it anywhere. thanks
i guess its part of the cap. thanks
Help would be much appreciated!
lol 3 years later. was it the oil filter housing gasket??
@@christianadams9028 yes lol
Can you do with E10 swivel 1/4" socket for last bolt like N52s? I need this done but wanted to see if anyone tried that.
Unfortunately there is no way, you just have to get over it and loosen the intake bolts and slide it back enough.
Excellent job👍
Honestly that is a mission just to replace an o ring.
My stock charge pipe won't go back into the manifold
Does it work on 535i?
hi! can you halp me ?
i have N42 engine then is warmed up and when i start drivin un low rpm 1000 -1500. i goes lose power un jumping rpm ?
i get to servis ho got a same car and nothing .
maybe You know the problem.
check your vacuum lines.
Do you have to use new aluminum bolt as well or can we reuse the original ones?
@@phillipguy4890 how did it go??
Hopefully someone can help me out here. I have a 135i. The oil filter housing makes a whining noise when i turn on the car. It mostly does it at a cold start. It doesn’t leak or anything. Not sure what it could be. Thanks in advance.
Cheap oil filters do that sometimes. Replace the oil filter with a MANN oil filter. Noise should go away. Make sure all parts are present and nothing is missing or broken inside the oil filter housing. And replace the small and large O rings, inside the oil filter housing too.
What’s the tork?
Very good video, disliked because he dint link the gasket he used and he said he was gonna link something too he did not link
Any torque specs?
