  • Hey guys! I know you have probably heard this before " I only by X brand cable with gold tips because I want to make sure my audio quality is pro AF ", but do the cables really make any difference at all? I've always thought this was mostly snake oil, but decided to do some testing of my own on some popular guitar, and non-guitar related cables!

    I noticed the difference between amp sim on and off. They all sound way better with the amp sim on :)

    I couldn't really detect a major difference, except that maybe the mogami cable seems to have a stronger output signal, as it seems to have a higher quality wiring. Pretty neat experiment!

    I'm new to the channel but really enjoy your comparison video and reviews. The differences are very subtle, but I guess Monster Bass is the most low end (go figure :P) and maaaaaybe a little bit more muddy (maybe :P). What surprised me the most is that I really liked Line 6 X2. Nice and clear tone which is very impressive for 10-years old used wireless equipment.

  • @TheChadPad
    @TheChadPad 3 года назад +1

    I found the most striking difference between wireless and wired. The wireless sounded muffled to me. I was surprised by that, like it's lacking something, like high end. And now, looking back at the spectrum analyzer, you can clearly see it rolled off in the top end compared with the Mogami Gold, at least with the amp sim off. You can also see the Monster Bass cable accentuating bass. Great test!

  • @jsdhesmith2011
    @jsdhesmith2011 Год назад +1

    The monster cable attenuated the high frequencies. I did hear that, otherwise, not a big difference between the other cables and the wireless signal.

  • @anhedonia0
    @anhedonia0 4 года назад +1

    Longer cables will roll off the highs when using passives pickups. Usually keep the cables to 6ft when I track and use a di box when making long runs. Active pickups on the other hand let you run longer cables but I have not noticed any differences besides shielding quality in cheaper cables vs expensive cables.

  • @stevensiwinski8049
    @stevensiwinski8049 2 года назад

    I feel like the real test would be in an environment with a ton of electromagnetic interference, like on a stage with a bunch of lights. I bet there is a difference in the shielding of some of those cables, though I'm not sure how much difference it would make even still.

  • @SeacowCabs
    @SeacowCabs 4 года назад +3

    Mogami had more output but maybe that could be affected by the lenght or the purity grade on the copper, maybe the most notable difference is if you had bat ears and you are a true king of the tone, but for the average user
    that doesnt matter at all

    • @TaylorDanley
      @TaylorDanley  4 года назад +1

      Totally! Hmm, could be. I think the mogami is the shortest of the bunch... but not by much

    • @FulcrumsEdge
      @FulcrumsEdge 4 года назад

      the output monitor showed a pretty much dead on similarity between mogami and others. i noticed no discernible amount of added compression that would result from the extra signal output, which would've actually leveled out the guitars output peaks and the overall RMS peaks would've dropped to lower levels requiring a notch up from the input pre-amp, which would've been noticeable from the output meter.

  • @Chord_The_Seeker

    Okay. I was “that guy”, and I listened to this through my iPhone speaker, but I could still hear a slight difference. It was very slight, but there was a difference. If anything I’d say that the Monster bass cable has a bit less bass than the other cables.

    • @FulcrumsEdge
      @FulcrumsEdge 4 года назад +1

      that would be because iphone speakers literally fart out less bass... when more bass is pushed... you were warned! haha

      Actually the monster cable has more thumpzzz, the line 6 sounds compressed, the futomaki sounds mid-hi open-loose, and the first one lgrsxyz sounds normal, probably because it serves as the reference by being the 1st one.

      I dont think so, but try it out!

  • @davel_ggw
    @davel_ggw 4 года назад +1

    I think it's primarily the higher frequencies that will be attenuated by a higher impedance cable (which increases with length of the cable of course, but different cables also vary in their impedance/ft). I do seem to hear a bit more going on in the higher frequencies with the Mogami compared to the others, but it is very subtle for sure. Having two of each, one from guitar to pedalboard, and one from pedalboard to amp/interface, the differences, if any, should be exaggerated a bit more.

    • @TaylorDanley
      @TaylorDanley  4 года назад +2

      You're probably right. I dont have enough cables for that experiment!

    • @Guitarune
      @Guitarune 4 года назад

      Yeah, but it's capacitance, not impedance. More capacitance will cause the lo-pass filter, and the resonant peak at the edge of it, to move downwards. Try comparing a 20' and a 10' version of the same cable :-D If you wanna make a really long cable, chose one from the top of this list: www.shootoutguitarcables.com/guitar-cables-explained/capacitance-chart.html

    i felt like if there WAS a difference, it was in the monster cable, it sounded like it had a role off at a reasonably high frequency on the DI guitar track. I was using flat response IEM's. The difference was small, and likely i wouldn't have ever noticed had i not been listening intently for a difference, passers by would not be able to tell. so i guess monsters are... worse?

    • @TaylorDanley
      @TaylorDanley  4 года назад

    The Mogami seemed to have more output in your test (and mine). I mostly buy Mogami because of the lifetime warranty, they sound a tad better than the other I have and if they ever fuck up, I can just return it and get another one, for-ev-er. Nothing That drastic I noticed really. Mogami def has most output level. Monster seemed a little high fq rolled off. Even the wireless seems to have more presence compared to monster.
    I personally noticed the real difference while using a coiled aka ‘vintage’ cable - that thing has some noticeable attenuation happening. On the other hand Paul Gilbert uses those and doesn’t give a tad, whether it’s good sounding cable or not, as he said in one of the interviews, ‘I never really used anything else, so I don’t care how different it sounds’

    • @TaylorDanley

    Not sure if it's a valid test if you are comparing not only different cables, but different takes as well. Anyway, I don't care about the cables, but after trying silent Neutrik connector, there is no way back. Not tone-wise - I have no idea if it's a factor, it's just durable and convenient as hell. You can plug and unplug all you want with zero noise from the amp.

    • @TaylorDanley
      @TaylorDanley  4 года назад +1

      How would I compare the same take though? 🤷‍♂️ theres definitely low quality cables out there that will give you unwanted noise, but I think the best selling point on the higher end cables is the lifetime warranty. That pays for itself within a few years (unless you lose your cable lol)

    • @semyonboyk0
      @semyonboyk0 4 года назад +1

      @@TaylorDanley Yeah, there is no way to compare the same take. I was thinking about using different cables from the looper to the sound card, but you have to connect guitar to the looper with some cable to begin with.

    I just discovered your channel a few weeks ago. It's nice to see a metal guy who's knowledgeable and not a douchebag. May other metal guitarists take lesson. And I see absolutely no difference in sound. I think high end cables are either built for longevity or status. Buying a cheap 10 dollar cable wont last as long or make you look cool like a mogami or monster will, but also wont effect your tone one way or another. The advantage in cheap cables is you can buy several at a time and when one goes bad, you simply change it out and move on. I usually buy at least 2 at a time when I venture into my local guitar shop. But, if you want to avoid spending 10 bucks every few months or so, then get the expensive ones. It makes no difference to me. I doubt anyone listened to Eddie Van Halen and wondered what cables he was using.

  • @Guitarune
    @Guitarune 4 года назад

    It's not magic, and it's not complex. Any difference in sound is due to cable CAPACITANCE combined with passive (high impedance) pickups. A different total CAPACITANCE will sound different. This total is dependant on cable CAPACITANCE and length. If you use active pickups, cable CAPACITANCE makes no difference at all.
    Did I mention CAPACITANCE? No magic, and it doesn't cost money. Completely free physics knowledge.
    If I know the total capacitance of your cable, I can cut ANY other brand of cable and make it sound exactly the same. It will likely differ in length though.
