The one thing everyone mentions is Bird's lack of athleticism.
He WAS athletic, though - he just wasn't big time, show time flashy athletic. He didn't have lightning speed or 40 inch hops.
    But here's the thing:
The guys who DID couldn't guard him - or get around him. He made fools of them on offense, he made fools of them on defense. He was so smart, he used the athleticism he DID have to outplay and out-hustle the best players in the game. There's a reason the most elite players in history bow down to this guy.
Pat Riley was famously asked who he would want to take the final shot of a game.
His answer: if the game was on the line, Michael Jordan.
If his LIFE was on the line, Larry Bird.
Doesn't get much clearer than that.

He made 3 All-Defense 2nd teams when he was younger and in better health, and in that era that really meant something. The youngsters will regurgitate the "played against plumbers" nonsense, but some names of some of those "plumbers" on those teams were Sidney Moncrief, Jack Sikma, Michael Cooper, Tree Rollins, Kevin McHale, Dennis Johnson, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Those 80s plumbers were some legendary defenders.

I'm 50; I was 10 back in '80, just getting into basketball, and was AMAZED at the level of play across the league! I knew - even then as a young newcomer to the game with no real point of reference- that I was watching something special. It was drama, engrossing competition with a great blend of physicality & skill. What I didn't know was that I was watching Bird & Earvin resurrect the NBA from tape delay. The hype was real. Even the NFL was more fun to watch back then with Riggins, Theismann on the Hogs...the NFC East was a BEAST & the whole league was lit. Between the NBA & NFL, it was sports heaven. I'm biased, of course, but it was the best time to be a sports fan back then. Even the MLB was but a few years from a prime stretch with Ken Griffey Jr. & company of that era.

I lived about 25 minutes north of Boston and when games came on we would turn on the tv and turn the volume down and then we would put on the radio so we could hear Johnny Most as commentator for the game. Some of my best childhood memories. Been many years since I played basketball but I did love the shit out of it. Broke all of my fingers playing and man, the arthritis I deal with today because of that is awful so I can't imagine the pain Larry was in playing with a back so broken for all those years. Fun to see you guys 'discover' a legend from my childhood. He was my Jordan. PS-the clip at 13:15 where he stole the inbound pass, the guy you hear describing it all was Johnny Most. Man about had a coronary several times calling Celtics games when Bird did some seemingly impossible thing.

Bird was one of the most feared monsters on the court in a league of the most talent-rich era across the board. That 80's Celtics team was the mid-90's Jordan Bulls in their day and before that, Jordan, even with Pippen and Phil Jackson, could never beat Bird's Celtics in the playoffs. They always got beat even after Bird's back was debilitated. It's a shame that Bird doesn't come up when we have the GOAT conversation, although I feel more and more people of this generation are discovering how great he was in his era, but he rightfully belongs in there every time. It was Bird and Magic who quite literally saved the entire NBA too.

@ Nick & Mookie. What a lot of people fail to realize, and what y'all missed in the video because it's a highlight and not a full game, is that the best way to defend Bird was to prevent him from getting the ball. Once Bird had the ball in his hands the chances of him impacting the game went up drastically. Most teams in the NBA made the decision to attempt to stop the pass to Bird as the main defensive measure against him. The inbound pass to Bird in the Pistons game that you paused on to point out the lack of defense, was in fact such an attempt to deny the ball to Bird.
What most teams discovered, however, was that Bird was excellent at using his body to shield the pass. Bird does just that on this particular play, while Benson tries to position himself to deny the ball to Bird. Benson takes the fall for this play, but in reality the pick set by McHale frees Bird up to cut to the basket. The rotation by the Pistons was too slow to put pressure on Bird after he got the ball, and the pick by McHale seals the fate of the Pistons.
It wasn't a lack of defense, but instead a good offensive play by McHale and Bird.

Can you even imagine a division that tough to get out of? Has that ever happened before or since?
Those were bird's first 8 seasons, and a division rival had Dr J, Barkley, Moses Malone, maurice cheeks, Andrew toney, Bobby Jones.... the knicks had Ewing, Bernard King, Billy Cunningham... the Nets had Darryl Dawkins, Otis Birdsong, Albert King... these are just the competition within the division. as another video had said, bird making 5 nba finals is just as impressive as magic's 9. Then, Bird had to face that Laker team in 3 of them

The Celtics vs Sixers rivalry of the the late 1970's/early 1980's was incredible. They met three straight years in the Eastern Conference Finals from 1980 to 1982. Philly won 4 to 1 in 1980. Celtics won 4 to 3 in 1981 (Celtics were down 3 to 1). Philly won 4 to 3 in 1982 (Celtics were down 3 to 1 in that series but lost game 7 at home). Both teams were stacked with talented players. Barkley didn't join Philly until the 1984-85 season. That season, Philly lost to Boston 4 to 1 in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Larry Bird wasn't fast but he was quick, defenders would often find themselves out of place or a step behind even if they took all the right angles or played him just right. Afterwards the defenders would stand there befuddled thinking how did he get past me or how did he get that shot off. The little things he did that you never notice unless you are on the court playing against him that is what truly made him great. Oh and also what people forget to mention about Larry's 3 straight MVPs is he achieved that during the most talent rich period in the NBA.

Good point quickness is more important than speed in basketball. I used to play basketball at a local park almost every day and was a so-so below average park player. I took off a few weeks because my friend was on vacation from UPS, he wanted to play tennis, so for two weeks we played tennis everyday. When I went back to basketball after the tennis, I noticed I was quicker on the first step than I ever was before. It was the tennis constant side-to-side motion that gave me that quick first step to get around players. If I were a coach I would have my players play tennis also.

For me, Larry was a major part of my childhood. My #33 shirt was my pride and joy. My Dad and I rode the bus for hours just get my Bird shirt and I found out years later that he went without a few meals that week just to get me that shirt. Since you asked - watching the NBA back then you followed both teams (Celtics/Lakers) closely so you could enjoy the inevitable Lakers/Celtics 7 game series. That was the epitome of basketball. Everyone knows how the playoffs are basketball at another level than the regular season and the finals a level above that. Well, a Lakers/Celtics finals were two more levels above any other finals and what most NBA fans lived/died for. Basketball in it's most glorious form. The way the two teams went at each other was intense. The Lakers showtime vs the Celtics inside game was a match-up made in basketball heaven. Magic Johnson and Larry Bird were the headliners in an all-star lineup and the fans were the ultimate victors. Great times. Thanks for the flashback.
