Larry Bird is the only person to be named Rookie of the Year, league MVP (3 years in a row), Finals MVP (2x), All Star Game MVP, Coach of the Year and Executive of the Year. Pat Riley said, "If I had to pick a player to take a shot to win a game, I'd pick M8chael Jordan. If I had to pick a player to take a shot to save my life, I'd pick Larry Bird."
Larry Bird was the best all-round player the league has ever known, PERIOD. He did thing routinely that other player could only dream of doing or, have nightmares about. Larry was dangerous from anywhere on the court including behind the glass. Larry is the reason I became a Celtic fan and I live in Missouri. I watched every game he ever played including several playoff games in the garden. Larry and Magic were fierce competitors on the court and are still fierce friends now. Larry doesn't get the respect he deserves, the reason for thi is a conversation for another time.
There was a game where Bird absolutely crushed a rookie, got like 50 on him, trash talked the whole game. Then at the end of the game he came up to the kid and complimented him on his effort, because the rookie didn't give up no matter how badly he was getting cooked, and Bird respects persistence. Invited the kid to visit in the off-season and shoot around on his private court. Bird was relentless on the court, but he wasn't mean-spirited about it. Getting inside people's heads was just part of the game.
It ain't trash talk when you can back it up. And it's not like he didn't tell him what he was gonna do.. he told them his shots.. and they still couldn't stop him. That's skill
Bird was a huge trash talker, today all the players that played against him love to tell Bird stories. He grew up with his brothers talking trash and later he played the waiters at a local hotel. They were grown men and black but they accepted him and let him play with them as an eigth grader. I think he probably picked up a lot of it from them.
Look up the story told by Jamal Mashburn about the time Rodney Rodger’s trash talked Bird…. And what Magic and Bird did to respond the next day. Insane. Jordan said he learned everything about trash talking and getting into your opponents’ head, he learned from Bird. THere are so many more stories about his trash talk, John Stockton’s rookie year, Larry told the entire Jazz team he was going to get 43 points on them before the game started. Bird scored 43 points with 4 minutes left in the third quarter and checked himself out, so his prediction was correct. John Stockton said that was a craziest thing he ever said. Dominique said he once saw Larry get so pissed off at the other teams for putting a white guy on him, that once they passed Larry the ball, he simply bent over and set the ball on the ground, said it wasn’t even worth doing anything against the other guy because it would be too easy and just ran down to the defensive end of the court….turning the ball over on purpose. You could type a novel about his stories and it would end being a trilogy longer the Lord of the Rings books.
Larry was a savage on the court but he didn't seem to talk bad about people off the court or behind their back. Even today i n interviews he's very humble. But on court it's the mind games, part of winning the battle.
Bird's talk is all *basketball.* Larry *is* a stand-up gentleman. As many of the guys telling the stories point out in many trashtalk videos, Larry's "trash talk" wasn't vulgar and demeaning, it was all basketball. .
Was in French Lick this afternoon, took my residents to eat ice cream and see Larry's childhood home, the house he built for momma Bird Grorgia and his court he put his work in below Georgia's house, sadly the Celtic all green court is in sad shape but the casino has acquired it and it is slated to return to it's former glory. 45 mins North from here. GOAT and I was a Sixer fan. Loved him as a kid at Indiana State, once he donned the reen Ihated him, he's bad.
the funniest part about barkley’s story about having the white guy guarding him is that the only guy the size of larry that was white on that team and played enough was bobby jones, an 11 time all defensive hall of famer and his nickname was “the secretary of defense” 😂 and check out the times he overcame injuries. it is wild.
I saw the other video you guys did about Jordan trash talk, and you should watch a few more of Bird's Trash Talk ones, because MJ is on one of them, being quoted saying that Larry taught him everything he knows about it. Jordan also had a rule for his team mates when they played the Celtics; "Not ONE word to Bird". He didn't want his team pissing Larry off.
As a rookie, Bird was ROY (63 votes to Magic's 3), and was 4th in the 1980 MVP voting. The next 3 years -- 1981, 82, and 83 -- he came in second in the MVP voting. He won MVP the next 3 years (84, 85, 86), was 3rd in 1987, then 2nd again in 1988. He was indisputably the best player in the NBA before injuries sidelined him in 1989.
Bird challenged his opponents (and himself too) to *bring it.* To give him their best. As you listen to more of these kinds of videos, you'll hear it. After being dunked on by Dominique - "Rook, I like you but I'm still getting 40 on you" After torching a fellow player from the state of Indiana "Rook, that's the best effort I've seen in a long time. In the off-season, come down to my place, and we can shoot around. " _These "quotes" are para-phrased_ but they give you the gist.
The funny thing about Larry's trash talk; he didn't yell it out, he didn't pound his chest... he said what he had to say in a normal tone of voice and he simply did exactly what he said he was going to do and there was NOTHING that anyone could do about it. He was THAT good.
If you'd like to learn about Larry & Magic then watch "Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals" Excellent documentary, you will learn things you'd never believe. Nice reaction!
Larry said he would trash talk all in good fun. He didn't do it to disrespect others. He said he was unaware that he was also thinking out loud, but it was all in good fun. I think, today, you get your feelings hurt. Poor babies. You have to be coddled now. Back then people were honest and played the game for the win and for the fans. That was who Larry Bird was. Off the court, he was shy and very private. He still is to this day. He's nice, precise with his words, and he is an intelligent man. He is also a fair, peaceful, loving person. Oh, he's a GOAT
To help restore the young lady’s confidence in Bird’s character. It was either Larry Bird’s mother or grandmother’s driveway needed to be paved. Instead of hiring a contractor to do it, he did it himself. He wanted to make sure it was done right. Now that is character. Sadly, that was where he hurt his back and in the end cut his career short. He knew that was a possibility…but making sure that driveway was done right was his priority…and he put every ounce of effort he had in that job.
I'll send an even better trash talking video if I can find it... The story where magic Johnson says he was hurt... I got to try and find that footage it's like Larry was a one man Harlem Globetrotter He was clowning fools absolutely clowning fools!
Is it trash talking if you tell the other team what you are going to do before you do it and then go do exactly what you said you would do? Or is it more of a challenge to stop him - which they couldn't.
If you check out where Larry acquired a lot of his basketball education, on public courts with older black players, you'll see that he at least comes by his unique race opinions, skills and mental fortitude honestly.
Mr. Larry Bird was/is a master of psychological warfare. He lived rent free between the eats of the other players. He told them what he was going to do AND then did it! He worked his tail off perfecting his craft! He could do it all lead, shoot, pass, rebound, and fight!!!! Enjoy. Caitland Clark is the female version now in the WNBA.

Bird want trash talking to be mean, although it seemed that way. He trash talked to get into your head and out if your game. It's also why he told guys what he was going to do. It psychologically destroys you. Bird didn't have Jordan's physical gifts. He used his mind in every aspect of the game.
Depending on how this reaction goes... you might I say might (why do I sound like Foghorn Leghorn?) Have a new subscriber, I say , alright, I've been drinking. Just go to the video.

Best thing about Larrys trash talk is he always backed it up !!

They call him Larry Legend. The best BB player that ever stepped on a court. He is the 🐐

Larry Bird used trash talk to make you doubt just a little or get you off your game just a little. It was part of his whole game strategy.
There is a reason he is called the Legend! He is the Goat.
HIS PSYCHOLOGY was ill taken as Trash Talk .... but, he could FOLLOW it up with action of extraordinary discipline and ability !
it was way more than u realize… jordan was 11-17 lifetime vs bird and was 0-6 vs bird in the playoffs lifetime
Also, what's ALWAYS missed... after 85, Larry had a compromised back!!

15 legendary NBA stars tell bird trash talk stories.
A good player will get the other player so mad , that thier head is not in the game .
He had confidence from shooting 800 practice shots a day.
He talked trash and could always back it up. When you can call your shots and they can’t defend it, you’re a phenomenal player.

Mark Aguire went to DePaul. They had an excellent team and a legendary coach. Bird beat them in the NCAA Tournament. Mark remembered that, I’m sure.
You have to understand why Larry didn't try to make friends at that time he said he couldn't compete at that level making friends.
