Usually, IMO it is the result of a lack of confidence in oneself. If you don't feel confident, it is difficult to strongly represent your opinions. You tend to joke, instead of being serious, because you don't feel that you represent authority, just the comic relief.
The best way forward is to decide what small area you are an expert in, and develop your expertise in that compartment of your life. When talking in that realm, never joke or back down. Let it be known that, in that arena, however small, you are the expert, and expect to be taken seriously.

@@TheToledoTrumpton this is a really great point and something I've done without realizing it. just having that foundation to build off of will help with confidence in other areas as you learn the difference between how you feel when you really know something vs. when it's probably a subject you should wait to speak on until you're better informed. projecting confidence is knowing when not to speak as much as it is knowing what to say when you do.

  • @JFairhart
    @JFairhart 5 лет назад +148

I get the impression that he expects a certain reaction when he is being nice or trying to be funny. People can pick up that you need them to react the way you want them to, so they don’t respond that way as they feel you are trying to manipulate them. So, immediately give up the need for anyone to like you, just like yourself, give up the need to have others laugh at your jokes, give up the need for others attention, keep your focus on your own presence without judgment. Be spontaneous but always be appropriate in the circumstances. Don’t do anything for others unless you feel that it’s an equal treatment. If someone never helps you, always refuse to help them, they are only taking advantage of you. Be your own best friend and don’t be affected by what others think about you. No one can hurt your feelings unless you allow them that power over you. Good luck.

It's tremendously difficult establishing and enforcing personal boundaries and respecting others boundaries when brought up as an emotional toilet for those closest.
Example: if I say no to a family members expectation to covertly manipulate and exploit me they rage out and add another cunty addition to their well established smear campaign.
If I deny or resist my siblings/parent taking my own personal belongings they blow up big time, nek minute I start hearing things from random aquaintances asking me why I'm such a selfish/greedy cunt for not sharing.
They've the "what's yours is mine and what's mine is mine to,...duh" ignorant mentality.

There’s this palpable tension between people because you don’t know how to navigate them yet, and you haven’t met all the many many kinds of assholes yet. Try and look at this time as a time of discovery. Try not to get stressed out about figuring out who you are or predicting how you or anyone else is going to react to anything. Another thing - people also often comment on me "not being able to picture me mad". I am a skinny and tall guy, never been in a fight. And that's it. Dominance among men comes from the threat of physical conflict, or at least ability to take it there. Simply - integrated capability for aggression. Until you have that, you will always be just someone others are able to push around. I solved it (after a few years of contemplation) with jiu jitsu classes, but something like box would be great too (for you, if you are reading this, guy in the video). Would you be able to defend your girl if 2 drunk guys started cat calling her on the street? Would you be able to stand up for her and yourself? Or would you be afraid of them physically hurting you if you said something?

It’s a skill. To stand up for yourself without losing your temper. There is an increasing number of toxic people around who will constantly look to cross your boundaries if you let them. And they rely on your inability to deal with awkward silences and confrontations to do so. Make peace with awkwardness and silences in a conversation. Say it “I don’t want to”, “No”.
And then enjoy the silence that follows. It will be hard for some time. Mainly coz people around you are not used to it. Slowly the bad ones will leave and the good ones will learn to respect your boundaries.

To the young letter writer: First of all, stop smiling constantly, because many people see that as an immature lack of confidence. Stop being overly polite, for the same reason. Stop over-explaining and stop justifying your thoughts and actions. STOP TRYING TO GET APPROVAL FROM EVERYONE. Wear a calm, unemotional expression on your face. Don't let people buffalo you into believing their bullshit criticism of you --stop responding to their manipulation and their DELUSIONAL AUTHORITY OVER YOU. Spend your time improving your OWN LIFE, instead of saving the world. Shut your phone off when you need uninterrupted time for yourself, and don't apologize for being unavailable. If manipulative people try to SHAME you and DISCOURAGE you for spending time on yourself, they are trying to buffalo you into always being subservient to their needs. Stop being so obedient, so cooperative, and so polite to assholes who insist that you must respect their DELUSIONAL AUTHORITY over you. If you don't control your own urge to be nice, people will take advantage of you in many different ways. If you care enough about yourself to build your body up with weightlifting, fewer people will try to intimidate you. Let your demeanor SHOW people that they are not in control of you because YOU are in charge of your life. And remember, IF YOU DON'T take damn good care of your own life, nobody else is gonna do that for you, dude.

Been there done that. Lemme help (to all those people not reading this)
    1. Realize the world is rough. People aren’t nice. Nearly everyone, even good ppl, will take advantage of you if you let them. Fair? No. But that’s reality. It’s tough out there.
    2. Stop being nice. Don’t be a nice guy. Nice is just another word for harmless. Be kind. The most fear instilling guy can be kind with soft actions. But stop being nice. Figure the difference, and implement.
    3. Assert yourself. If you avoid conflict to the point of compromising what you believe to avoid a conflict, stop. Start small. Voice a different opinion that is non consequential. Be polite, understanding, gentle, but also firm in your opinion. Repeat until it’s comfortable. Move on to more consequential conflicts.
    4. Confidence. Good chance you lack it. Maybe not. If you ain’t confident, learn to not give a single fuck. Scared you might mess up or fail? Fuck it. The world is going to continue to spin if ya do. What happens, happens, stop caring. It’s hard to create confidence, so start with next best: not giving a rip and just doing it. Then grow as you discover your competence.
    5. Backbone. Grow one. You think being nice helps make the world go round? It doesn’t. Sometime bad things, hard things, and jarring things make the world go round. You bring nice will inhibit some people from becoming their best. Don’t let others down by being weak. Grow a backbone for others. Standing up for yourself profits others as much as you.
    6. If all else fails go listen to Jordan Peterson. He is smarter than me.
