One of the saddest yet most beautiful scenes of ballet.
I think Giselle’s innocence was her ultimate demise. She grew up in the small village where everyone was her friend and protected by her mother all of her life. She simply didn’t know there were such terrible deception existed out in the world.
When she realized she was betrayed by her beloved, her entire being shattered to tiny pieces. She went into panic, didn’t know what to trust, who was real and who wasn’t. That is why this is so scary for her. Then eventually her weak heart gives up and she dies.
This is my take of the mad scene of Giselle. I cannot count how many times I’ve watched this ballet but still makes me cry every time.

In some versions Giselle has a heart condition and because she gets so stressed out when finding out her loved one is marrying someone else that her heart doesn't take it. In other versions she just dies of sadness. But in both of them she hallucinates when realising she has been lied to and, in my opinion, that's what this scene is all about!

Andrea Britton Yep. The version where she stabs herself is the version that makes the most of sense for the story. I don’t know why most Opera Houses have stopped staging Giselle’s death as a suicide.
The whole second act doesn’t make sense if Giselle doesn’t kill herself.

morgan She’s hallucinating her first happy moments with Albrecht. Look at this part: ruclips.net/video/eqkRs5m8BkI/видео.html of the ballet, where Giselle is slowly falling for Albrecht’s charm. Notice that she recreates many of the same movements (and the movements in their very first pas de deux, which I have no video to show).

I love the emotions that both she and the guy who did Albrecht have. Some versions have Albrecht as someone who just manipulated her for the fun of it, but some have him really love her, and you can definately tell that he really loves her here.

"When the Shit Hits the Fan: The Ballet
This is one of my favorite scenes in ballet, and Alina Cojocaru is perfect. She's the best for roles that are young and innocent (Princess Aurora, for example. Out of the damn park). I saw Marinela Nunez do this scene and it was almost...too beautiful. Too strong; too mature. She was the best Odette/Odile you're ever likely to see, but Alina is more fragile, and ultimately more heartbreaking. Her facial expressions and deconstructed movements make it cease to be a ballet for a few minutes and simply become a story. Its that kind of ability, emotional as well as physical, that makes a great artist. Also the music is so twisted in that scene. I love the complexity.

It's a shame a good part of the audience was unable to see all the details of her interpretation, as WE can: the expression in her face, her eyes... They probably felt it all the same, though, what she imparted was all over her, A better still interpretation? I doubt it, but I will look it up! An Oscar? Yes, I agree with that! True as life, not a cerebral, learned, interpretation.
Manuel Legris is up to her, also a great actor, Their Giselle PDD Act1 you posted is also the most charming and believable interpretation I have seen so far (and I have seen A LOT). Look at his L'Arlesienne final scene!

In all versions, she dies, she's fragile, cardiac. When she learns the truth, she remembers all what the Prince and her were dancing at morning , becoming crazy, and wants to suicide with the sword that her 1st fiance takes immediately. Then she recognizes her mother, run into her arms, and finally go to the Prince, her heart stops brutally, she falls down. The shock was too hard for an innocent girl, 15 years old... Better look at it COMPLETELY , there's one at Scala danced by Alessandra FERRI, Prima Ballerina Assoluta, and Massimo Murru, Principal Dancer, LIVE . (1996) excellent and poignant. This Masterpiece is called the Ballet of Forgiveness... Link here : ruclips.net/video/1YVryALk8j8/видео.html

Can anyone tell me more about the story? I mean I know that she is heart- broken and she is getting mad. But what’s going on in her mind in this scene, what is she imagining? What do these hand movements mean? And why is the whole village watching her?
Alina is incredible! Not many actresses could do this as convincing as her, and she is actually a dancer and has more skills to master... just phenomenal.

Mathilde Wesendonck Giselle finds out that her beloved that she wants to marry is marrying someone else and the prince. At first she is really confused until the situation is explained to her. She then goes mad while she dealing the the pain of a literal broken heart( some stories say she has a heart condition) and soon dies from it.

    • @nat7767
      @nat7767 4 года назад +8

Mathilde Wesendonck earlier in the ballet, giselle and the prince dance together a lot, that’s where her reflective moments are from. i remember one moment, when i saw the ballet in person, she was picking petals off of a flower with the prince like the “he loves me, he loves me not” sort of thing, which is where that motion comes from in the mad scene. the movements she makes is her reflecting on her and the princes relationship, before her heart just gives up :(. i think the town is watching her because she is imagining things, and they don’t know what to do. that’s just how i interpreted it :)

The hand movements are mimicking a scene earlier in the ballet where she picks the petals off a flower saying he loves me, he loves me not. The deranged dancing she does also mimics the choreography of earlier in the ballet where giselle and the prince are dancing happily together. When she goes mad she starts hallucinating their happy times together and dies of heartbreak because she realises she has been betrayed and lied to. The whole village is watching because just before this scene there were happy village festivities going on

Hey, sorry I know I'm late to the party but I've just been binge watching Alina Cojacaru videos because I just think she's so talented :) She really gets into this scene acting-wise and it's amazing :)
Like others have said, the villagers are there because they were celebrating some kind of festival beforehand. The character who blows the horn has feelings for Giselle and I think maybe knows her love is engaged? Seems like he's had enough of the pretence and wants to expose him.
Giselle is in a state of shock here and losing it because the person she loved and who she thought loved her is going to marry someone else. She points to her ring finger because she thought he'd propose to her (or because he's engaged to someone else). She also goes over steps her and her love performed together previously. She's only very young and emotional and I had a thought.... because she's a poor village girl with a heart condition (albeit a beautiful one and with a strong support system), she probably made her peace with the fact she would likely never marry or find love, then was given the hope of it but had it snatched away in front of everyone in her mind (whether they understood everything or not), which would be really heart-breaking. It's clear the gentleman cares for her but he still lead her on and if you've ever been lead on, it is pretty hurtful and mind boggling, even if they did care for you. 😔
      Hope this helps :)

Where are the dancing bits? I like her acting but without the dancing, the music is wasted and the scene is disjoint

Ho Yan Law that’s the point she’s falling into the brink of madness so that’s why they are trying to make it very dramatic

Better look at it COMPLETELY , there's one at Scala danced by Alessandra Ferri and Massimo Murru, live. (1996) excellent and poignant. This Masterpiece is called the Ballet of Forgiveness.ruclips.net/video/1YVryALk8j8/видео.html
