Wow, I met Kirk today at Jim’s Music Works in Lawndale and he was wearing a Normans Rare guitars t-shirt. Cool guy, very humble, he wasn’t playing guitar but now I see how skillful he is!
I saw Josh Smith and the Frost at Jimmy Buffett's when he was a teenager. Maybe 1993. He came to my table and grabbed my beer bottle and played a slide solo with it right in front of me, just to let me know what he could do . He must have known, by the way I looked that I was a guitar player too. Very impressive ,especially for a teenager. Sonny Landreth is the one who has some blues /slide magic. I saw him at Summerfest in Milwaukee. The most impressive display of guitar since I saw Eddie Van Halen second row in 1978 when I was almost 17, which was the most impressive display of musicianship I ever witnessed .I've seen Perlman and the Chester string quartet too. People who never saw Ed play the white and black guitar and heard it up close like that missed out . Very few musicians in history have had the whole world take notice, like Ed did . It will always be sad he is gone
The first chord is a E7. C shape with your third finger on the root on the 5th string 7th fret. Your 4th finger on the 3rd string 7th fret which is a D note. This is what makes it a 7 chord because the D is the 7th note in the major scale. The progression is E7-A7-B7. This is the 1-4-5 progression and is the foundation of music. As for the lead parts. They are playing the scales to match what chord they are in. Using the pentatonic scale, blues scale. Its really fun working it out for yourself. I'm sure you already knew this. But of not I hope it helps.
