  • Deltarune is almost half a decade old, and with no release in sight, fans have become antsy waiting for their next Dark World adventure. Which begs the question: should Deltarune stay committed to its current release schedule, or throw us a bone?

In all honesty, I think the reason Toby initially planned to drop 3-5 at once is because of the limits of GameMaker. Which is also why I believe Chapter 3 is dropping on it's own at this point because of a recent GameMaker update.
Due to the limits of GameMaker, every Chapter would need to be ported to the newly released one in order for it to fully release. For example, when Chapter 2 was released, Chapter 1 had to be ported back to Chapter 2 in order for it to come packaged into one download. Which probably took a bunch of time.
If Toby dropped 3-5 at once, he would only have to port Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 to Chapter 3-5 which would save a bunch of time instead of porting every Chapter every single time he released a new one (Imagine having to port Chapter 1, 2, 3, and 4 to Chapter 5 if the Chapters were releasing one at a time. This would be extremely painful lol)
(This would also explain why he was looking for alternatives to GameMaker before starting Chapter 2 because of the limitations to GameMaker)
However, a recent GameMaker update that came out this year included a new function called game_change(). This new function feels like it was designed with Deltarune in mind lol
The reasoning that Toby had to port each old Chapter to a new Chapter when one was in development is because GameMaker only allowed for a single data(dot)win file for one game (which if you didn't know, is the main file that contains all of Deltarune game files). However, the new GameMaker game_change() function allows for multiple data(dot)win files to be used in one singular game.
This means that Chapter 3, 4, and 5 can all have their own separate data(dot)win files and also means they don't need to port every Chapter to the newly released Chapter. Which also means that Toby can easily update Deltarune on the Steam Store when a new Chapter is ready as a DLC release if he wanted to.
In fact in the documentation for the game_change() function on GameMaker's website, they used Deltarune Chapter 3 as an example for how to use the game_change() function lol
Overall, I think this function changed the direction development for Deltarune is going. It feels weird for them to almost entirely shift focus onto just Chapter 3 and getting that content complete after so long of them saying that they're developing all Chapters simultaneously.
And plus, considering Toby has changed his plans before with releasing all Chapters at once, I wouldn't put it past him to change his plans again and then just not tell us until the release of the Chapter.
I remember right before the release of Chapter 2, we got a massive amount of information on just Chapter 2 alone and no other Chapter after that. This is currently how it feels right now, with Toby getting quieter about other Chapters and only showcasing stuff about Chapter 3.
It doesn't seem unrealistic that Chapter 3 is currently finished and is planning to drop by October 31st (Deltarune's 5th Anniversary) based on the history of what the Newsletters have implied about how close the Chapter is to the end of development.

I'm believing this with all of my heart.
As much as it would seem weird if Chapter 3 really did end up being not that story-focused, I definitely don't think that would be enough to discourage fans to delve into the depths of the new release.
I mean, for instance, it's probably gonna have a secret boss anyway, right? And like, come on, the whole new Dark World is literally partially based around Kris's house. As if that wouldn't intrigue people enough to litter the internet with countless theories and sudden findings...!
Besides, even if it IS gonna be "underwhelming" when compared to other chapters, I don't think that would necessarily be bad. After all, we have a total of 7 chapters to go through, so if one ended up a bit more quirky and less heavy than the others, wouldn't that actually be a good thing?! Am I totally not biased because I literally can't wait anymore?!?!?
Seriously though, I hope Toby ends up doing what he knows is best for us to experience the game. That is what I want the most personally, even though it would make me kind of happy to get Chapter 3 asap you know lol

IIRC, it was during Undertale's Kickstarter that Toby decided that should he succeed in making Undertale, he'd follow it up with a game that combines elements of it with ones from an earlier game he unsuccessfully tried to make in 2012. So no, Undertale was never envisioned as mere preparation for Deltarune. It was only during the former's development that he came up the latter in its current form.
Also, regarding Toby's remarks on how Chapter 3 will have a strong focus on weird gameplay ideas and not a huge amount of storytelling, I do think it's possible that this is a major reason why he didn't want the next release to only cover it, since it sounds like it may be a polarizing chapter that could leave some fans unsatisfied if it's all they get. But if Chapter 3 is significantly closer to completion than Chapter 4, and that's the only significant reason for the previously announced release plan, then I hope Toby changed his mind and is aiming to at least get Chapter 3 out sooner than the rest. At this point, the wait is becoming pretty hard. Even if it's one of the less important chapters overall, I'm sure it could still help keep fan interest going for a while longer.

Releasing 3, 4, & 5 simultaneously seems great from a storytelling perspective. Not only for your stated reason of 3 being less story heavy, but also that with Deltarune being 7 chapters, 3, 4, & 5 are set to be the Act 2 of the overarching story. Somewhere in chapter 4 or 5 there's going to be an act 2 turnaround that will propel the story into the rest of 5 and chapters 6 & 7.

While many people want it now, I feel like having the bulk of the game release around the same time will be better in the long run, in terms of the narrative and in terms of the gameplay. While there is a slight concern over the conversation, we have to remember that the last two chapters aren't releasing with the paid version of the game, and will be added as an update later down the line, leaving ample room to discuss twists and characters whilst we wait for the ending of the game.

While it sucks having to wait so long for the game, I’d rather wait until 2025 or 2026 for quality chapters 3-5 than a chapter 3 with an unsatisfying ending

Toby hired some people for his gamedev team. Organizing a team + being creative director and making sure your vision is transferred to the team + dealing with 3rd party services + the fact that it's going to be 3 chapters released straight this time, takes extra time, and it's the first time he's doing it.
Toby used to pay a lot attention to detail in Undertale, so I wouldn't be surprised if he where even delaying his own team to make sure things are done right.
I'm willing to bet that when he made chapters 1 & 2 (on his own) he was just messing around, clearing out if he even wanted help or not (he needed it).
He isn't that much experienced in gamedev, Undertale was his first (fully programmed by him and nobody else) game, so these doubts are normal. In fact, I believe he even said so himself that he wasn't sure if he wanted help or not. In the end, it's always better to get help, as long as you can guarantee some good coordination from your team.
One thing's for sure, by now he probably transferred his ideas well to his team, and has a good hold on the teamwork, vision, and project direction, so he should be able to produce whatever he has in mind quicker (a full well coordinated gamedevteam can produce gaming content at incredible rates). I'm sure we're going to be seeing a relentless barrage of content in the years to come, which will make this gap seem extraordinary.
This silence is just the preparation. His company is growing.

He's been strangely quiet about Chapters 3 and 4. I feel as if he's been using 3 as some sort of distraction to make us think the package is coming in a lot later than it is.

Also, chapter 03 lacks a lot of story, but surely sets up what is next in chapter 04, and maybe Toby doesn’t want us to dig into that and ruin the surprise of the next ones. I prefer to wait more and to have a more fleshed out story, without Toby trying to cover details from all chapters in order to avoid spoilers.

I still firmly believe 2024 is the most likely drop year, the only reason to assume beyond that is a lack of infromation, which really doesn't tell us anything either way.
On the single release thing, I have been heavily on that side for a while and do think It's what I'd prefer as an obsessed fan, but recently I thought that maybe for more casual enjoyers of Deltarune who aren't gonna spend the gaps between chapters thinking about them, watching theories, replaying them etc, as time goes on they'll forget the majority of the details of the past chapters. Maybe for their sake it's better to have a chunk to play at once? But from most other angles I do desperately want chapter 3 as soon as possible even if it would otherwise drop late 2024.

Undeniably, I am most concerned about content for the community. We've been milking it dry for so long, I really wish Toby would drop at least something similar to an ARG as Spamton Sweepstakes was. It doesn't really have to be another huge even, but instead just focused on the content so the community could at least wait a little longer. I fully understand his decision to drop three at once, especially since he's the mastermind here, but I'm certainly not going to say I wouldn't be THRILLED to have just chapter 3 come out this year, no matter how weird

I'm still willing to wait for all 3 chapters, it makes it so all 3 of them can sort of work together, unlike 1 and 2 which while still the same game obviously, but feel like they do their own thing.
It's easy to look at it now while we're still waiting for the chapters, but eventually when the full game does release, replaying each chapter might feel more connected and will make the game better in the long run.

We do have a little info that basically tells us why Chapter 3 would be odd on its own.
We know it starts in a dark world. The fountain is opened on them while sleeping. There is no pre dark world section. Susie and Kris likely wake up in the dark world. So that cuts out quite a bit of both story and gameplay (especially with Ralsei's Town being established as such a huge aspect in Chapter 2)
Then based on the image names of the hometown in last years preview, we have a pretty good idea that the hometown and likely even visiting Ralsei's town both are in Chapter 4. The song being hometown morning kind of seals that its the morning after, and thus, we likely don't even have a hometown / ralseis town section in Chapter 3 AT ALL. This makes it kind of obvious why it would be very odd as a standalone chapter. Start in the dark world, complete dark world story, seal fountain, chapter ends.
Still, I think if this really is the case, and it is the only or at least, primary reason it would be somewhat jarring to release alone, maybe this could be pointed out and get a vibe from the fanbase if it would be enough for them to want to just wait for the rest? I half assumed we might get a poll this anniversary asking this exact thing ; do we want to wait for the whole package, or get Chapter 3 even though it might not have a real ending?
I still think releasing Chapter 3 when finished (likely before this year is over) would make it VERY reasonable to have chapter 4 then release next anniversary and chapter 5 release the year after that. Yearly releases would make this wait seem much less insane. As of right now, the most optimistic release of 3-5 would be 2024, or 6 years after we first got a "demo". This is like 2/3 of the game. If chapter 7 really is the end, I would like to think 6-7 could easily take 3 more years based on current release scheduling assuming at least one of those is likely a VERY meaty chapter. 9 years for what amounts to a full game. Thats absolutely wild to think about.

my take on all of this is that i’m inclined to just trust toby’s judgement. he has more information than we do, i wouldn’t be surprised if the reason why the plan is to drop three chapters at once is something vital to do with the story. unlike a certain other indie game with a funny murder bear that has gone entirely off the rails in terms of story, gameplay and release dates, i don’t have any major concerns. i trust that toby knows what he’s doing.
i will say though that i would have no complaints if toby ended up just dropping chapters 3 and 4 together and released chapter 5 separately. from what he said about chapter 3 being “weird” and less story heavy and chapter 4 being more of a “standard” chapter, i think those two releasing together is probably a good idea. and that would also make things happen sooner, which i certainly wouldn’t mind.

i've been of the opinion that the chapters should release individually ever since chapter 2 first released. the reasons why are mentioned in this video, specifically that it allows fans to focus on one chapter at a time-- no single chapter will overshadow the others and everything gets appreciated. i really enjoy the community aspect of watching videos about all the findings people have made and seeing people make new theories surrounding what was discovered in the newest chapter release. it allows fans to participate in discussions while all on the same page as one another.
i also feel like it's more beneficial for the team more than anyone else that chapters are released separately rather than in groups. it keeps hype for the game alive and fans satisfied long enough for the team to breathe and not have to stress over hungry fans throwing accusations that the game will never release at them and badger them relentlessly about releasing something even if it's not finished. stuff like that can really affect a persons mental health and i can't even imagine how bad it must be for them with how popular undertale+deltarune are
in the end, i trust toby and i trust that he knows what's best for the game. like he said, there's no one on the planet who wants it released more than he does

I was personally disappointed with the anniversary newsletter. I won't lie, I did somewhat expect the chapter drop but them not being ready yet is fine. I was disappointed by the lack of information on how development progress is going. It's a common sentiment that the newsletters have been saying chapter 3 is near complete for months now (although if I recall correctly that was more an inference from the actually shared progress than anything) and as far as news on chapter 3 goes I think it did well enough. We know exactly how close to completion chapter 3 is.
My big issue is the complete radio silence on chapters 4 & 5. I understand 3 is the focus but even if they haven't been worked on at all in months I'd still like to know about that so we can reasonably revise expectations for when the chapters may finally release. As it stands now, the bullet patterns Toby mentioned the team working on for chapters 4 & 5 in an earlier newsletter may be the only development that's been done at all, or alternatively they could be entirely finished with Toby just using chapter 3 as a coded teaser for how close we really are to full release. We just don't know.
All that being said, I can understand the sentiment that people want Toby to drop 3 on its own, or perhaps 3 & 4 without 5 just for an earlier release, but I'm still finding waiting for all 3 chapters to come together. All I want is a progress update. This feels like a group project with a looming deadline where you can't start your part until everyone else is finished, but only 1 other member of your 4 person group is communicating at all.

I think if we get Chapter 3 on it's own, it'll be because chapters 4 & 5 are right behind it and Toby just wants to give us that speculation time we love so dearly.
If not, I think it's because Chapters 1 & 2 are so special. They're both focused on introducing new main stay characters, introducing us to new mechanics, and they both end on a fake-out-red-herring "Kris Is Da Bad Guy(gender neutral)" ending. That gives us so much to talk about and end on a MASSIVE cliffhanger! Chapter 2 also having an alternate route, meant there was meaningful stuff to dig for in it too. Chapter 3 might not even have an alternate route, or since we already know about it, it won't nearly be as hard or internet astounding to find. There's a *lot* going on in chapter 2 that makes it EXTREMELY viable to release early that other chapters are not likely to have.

I'd say if they don't release by the end of 2025, it would be better for Toby to at least release Chapters 3 and 4 without 5. I think the wait will be a lot more bearable now that we have newsletters to look forward to every season. I agree that Toby probably knows what's best, but if chapter 3 is simply an unconventional Chapter, and Chapter 5 has a better ending narratively then 4, which is what I'm assuming the reasoning is, I would say releasing chapter's 3 and 4 together would make sense, and then, since Chapter 5 was going to be the ending point, I think it would be pretty reasonable to release on it's own a year of two later. That is all to say, if he doesn't finish faster than we think. As a game developer, I can say gameplay focused sections usually take the longest to program and bug test, and especially considering all the writing is already done (according to Toby), I could understand a more gameplay centric chapter like Chapter 3 would take a little longer than Chapters 4 or 5. Of course, I don't really mind, as long as Toby keeps us updated on the games progress.

Also it gives the community more time to discover things in the chapter (egg, secret boss... peculiar pathway, ect.) Proficient indie devs know how to handle their game better than their community does, and it's unreasonable and quite mean to demand the dev sacrifice the plan for the sake of "online discourse (you're getting bored and can't find another game) and content overload (learn some self control in your content consumption)." Like Hakita with Ultrakill, I trust Toby Fox to make the game to the standard one can only give themselves at whatever pace is necessary.
And when it does come out, me and my friends will do stupid voice acting over discord while the last one to start the new chapters plays.

I know most fans don't seem to agree with this, but I think that the chapter release schedule for this game was a huge mistake and will end up haunting it in the long run. Episodic releases for anything only works when three things are established and remain consistent from the start:
    1. The length of time between releases
    2. The amount of content in each new episode
    3. Consistent and clear schedule
The problem with Deltarune for me from the start (and this became an even bigger problem when chapter 2 came out 2 years after chapter 1 and revealed that there would be 7 chapters in total), is that the time between episodes is simply way too long for me to remain invested in the story, and lack of a consistent schedule makes it worse. I've seen so many people who played chapter 1 not touch, let alone finish chapter 2, and this sill only get worse with every episode release. I think that the best options for the team would have been to either work on all episodes at the same time and reach a point where they are all like 90% finished before starting to release them (which would make sure the wait between every chapter was shorter and maybe more consistent), or that they should have just released the whole thing at once as one finished game, which yes would mean that this game would have been developed for probably over a decade before we ever saw anything about it, but at least we would have gotten one complete experience. As is, the chapter release schedule has been actively hurting my enjoyment in the game.

Ultimately the dev team is trusting people are patient enough to wait, that they have other interests in the meantime and other games to look forward too.
The wait between Chapter 1 and 2 has hardly affected Deltarune's growth as a whole too, it's still really popular and most causals would pick it up again.
Also even though this isn't an actual retail game, I have waited close to 7.5 years for the fangame Undertale Yellow to release and I am still heavily invested in what story it has to tell. And many people who previously forgot about the game or thought it was cancelled, jumped back in to anticipate the game, which does show that waits can be worth it for a lot of people.

@@Turbulation1 My biggest problem with the release schedule isn't the amount of time that it's taking. I wouldn't mind waiting 60 years for the full game to be out if that was what needed to be done to make the game the best game the team could make. My problem is that when you release a story episodic, but don't have a consistent and short (relative to the schedule Delatrune has) release schedule, then that hurts the story. I cannot maintain my investment and immersion when by the time the next chapter comes I have completely forgotten what happened in the last, who the characters were, what the mechanics are, what is the lore, what are the themes. Heck, when chapter 2 came out I didn't even have my old chapter 1 save file because it was so long, and I ended up deleting the game since.

    • @Turbulation1

The best way to counter that is to simply replay the previous chapter or chapters not too long before the new one releases. And it shouldn't take too much time out of your day to do it.
For 3+, that's assuming you still have Deltarune on steam which you probably would by this point.@@TheBadasssnoopy

you make an excellent point about the single chapter releases feeling like special events. I guess a similar situation to compare it to would be the JoJo anime, how it would feel like a special event when it came time for the next part to drop, and to watch the episodes as they released week by week. and then David Productions screwed over Stone Ocean by giving it to Netflix and they did the episode batch release model.

good video. I'm a bundle release fan because I'd just like to play the game as it was intended, with the internet off, on a cold autumn day with a blanket. And if I could discover any secrets on my own that would be really cool too.
Will that be like, three years from now? PROBABLY!! HAHA!!! But it's going to be a really good time. The single release is bad because it would encourage every chapter to have the same format so as to not be underwhelming as a standalone release. Chapter 3 sounds like a palette cleanser so I don't think it makes sense to have it on its own. I wonder if that means we wouldn't see Snowgrave consequences until Chapter 4 or even 5 or something, which would probably be part of Toby's reasoning to not release that standalone (imagine the salt)
Of course I've got not idea what the hell Chapter 3, 4, and 5 actually look like, right? I like your idea of a staggered release where they have a few weeks inbetween, but between that and everything I'd take everything at once.
TL;DR I hope Toby sticks to his vision and doesn't cave to fans.

I think that given how chapters 3-5 are being simultaneously worked on with a major focus on chapters 3 and 4, if chapter 3 were to be a solo release then there shouldn’t be as long to wait for chapter four when compared to the release of the previous two, with the little knowledge on chapters 4 and 5 I’m inclined to believe a solo release would be better since for the however long chapters 4 and 5 are being worked on it would be difficult to update fans who haven’t even played chapter 3 and would be spoiled by hints from later chapters

I never once felt like chapter 3 should drop on it's own, it may have been a mistake to give us chapter 2 when we did, going by the state of the more dedicated fans, and people expecting things sooner than later.
But I am still disappointed and concerned a bit with the state of things. Chapter 3 being NEAR done for as long as it has been, has certainly been a bummer, (Especially since they did the translations before the chapter was fully playable?? That's not something I've heard of being done before)
Toby went from being as clear as humanly possible even giving us percentages to being vaguer and vaguer, which also isn't helping things.
The "I plan to sleep" thing WAS vague and odd in wording and WAS in fact alluding to something else, just not what anyone hoped for.
Chapter 3 still not even being done combined with Toby's insecurity about the chapter makes me think they keep redoing things as well.
