Hey Nat, the actor of Kwon, Brandon H Lee, is actually the son of my Taekwondo coach at Lee's Champion Taekwondo Acedemy. He used to be there a lot and would even instruct me in class sometimes. Super cool guy anf I'm glad he is living his dream of being an actor.
The goat reacting again to CK Also Kwon (The guy who does a 1v3 at the beginning), is played by Brandon H Lee, a 5th degree blackbelt in Taekwondo and National Champion.
Tang soo do has a lot of taekwondo as like half of its foundation. The more karate part comes in after when the Japan occupation ended and the Koreans combined karate, some kung fu and other arts that make up Tang soo do, which is what Johnny uses in cobra Kai. He taught this to most kids, if not all but mainly Miguel and Robby. That’s why you see a lot of taekwondo kicks, cuz of this origins.
The Korean guys are Taekwondo artists irl but the art that they're supposed to portray is Tang Soo Do, which is a Korean martial art that birthed the style of Cobra Kai.
Just to be accurate cobra kai is actually tang soo do (Korean karate) that’s what the cobra kai students in Korea train in. However what you said about the actors that play the Korean cobra kai students they are black belts in taekwondo
That flipping kick Kwon did is called the Rolling Thunder, it’s used in the UFC. Justin Gaethje tried it against Max Holloway a few months ago and missed, and then Max laid him out with 1 sec to spare in the whole fight.
😂😂 man it's funny because first of all people will come with unrealistic expectations to uneffective martial arts and when they finally try somthing that works like boxing mma or whatever they going to get punched in the face and than their karate fantasies are out of the window. I saw it many times happen
The actors went on strike and tbh I kinda saw they’re skill decreasing and the choreography not as good. The Senseis are the only ones who kept up with their training. The Taekwondo guys are real athletes who have most likely been training since kids
A spinning crescent kick is a lot easier to pull the force on, safer for acting. One could pull the force on a spinning back hook kick, but you'd have to be razor sharp and only slap with the pad of the foot, instead of hooking the target with your heel. As far as throat strikes, they are pretty popular in in Taekwondo, won't see them in sport TKD but in practical TKD, after 1st Dan, a lot of throat strikes are taught.
Cobra kai karate is actually taekwondo, its from south korea, and most of the stuff they do is taekwondo, they just say its karate. I even recognized one if the forms they were doing.
Cobra Kai's brand of karate is technically identified as Tang Soo Do, which is basically Korean karate (though the recognizable elements of Tae Kwon Do are present in Tang Soo Do as well). Brandon Lee and Daniel Kim do a great job demonstrating their Tae Kwon Do skills in the show. Also, if Nat gets to reacting to the fights in Season 6 Part 2, I think he'll appreciate the Tae Kwon Do skills of a particular female fighter.
Cobra Kai Karate comes from Tang Soo Do. Kreese trained it in the military. "Tang Soo Do" means "The Tang Hand", referring to the Tang dynasty, which occupied Korea. The Koreans adapted Tang Soo Do from Shotokan Karate, which later became Taekwondo.
I love the movies and show, but high schoolers winning karate tournaments with at most two years of practice under their black belts is just unrealistic. It takes literal YEARS just to develop the muscle memory required to perform these moves. And in season 6 they are competing in an international tournament that only allows the best fighters in the world. Again; these are high schoolers who just joined a kids' karate class a few years ago. The show makes karate look way too easy. "Hit this, then kick that. Ok, that's great. Here's your black belt."
Real fights and tv/movie fights have always looked different. Go all the way back to Bruce Lee movies where he would take out 30 guys at once, but it was always one at a time, they would only attack him one at a time to make it look good, but in reality, if all 30 guys had rushed him at once, it wouldn't have been a fight, it would have been a beat down.
i think the korean fighters' marital art is based on tang soo do which is just korean karate, from that fight scene alone you cant get the full idea but most of the training and other moves are shown outside of the fighting
Everyone in the comments is saying that the Korean Cobra Kai students were using Tang Soo Do, and that's what they're training in, however, Brandon H. Lee has been training in Taekwondo since he was 3 years old, and is a 5th degree black belt in Taekwondo, per. his website.
It's actually Tang Soo Do taught by Master Kim. I started Karate because of Karate kid and Cobra Kai. I've been doing Shotokan since the 17th of November 2022 at the end of September I'll have my green belt exam. Osu 🥋🔥 i guess i can say CK is based on a mix of Tang Soo Do and Karate. The Korean fighter who came to John Kreese is Kwon Jae Sung (Brandon H Lee) A Taekwondo black belt.
I really don’t know if you’ll see this, but it’s not mean to be a spinning hook kick, crescent kicks are just more flashy plus you can see the actors face, you were right Brandon Lee who plays kwon is a black belt, him along with you have actually taught me a lot lol.
Hey bud, just so you know, it's not TaeKwonDo, It's TangSooDo, they have similar roots, but essentially split and went in different directions, TaeKwonDo went the sporty route, TangSooDo kept more toward the spirit of Karate but still had the flares and kicks, it's an interesting bit of history I'd recommend you look into if you'd like a good read! :)
@daddy9267 Not disputing that, hence why the movies were called "The Karate Kid" however, TSD is more like a grandson to Karate, it's a combination of Korean Military Martial Arts and Moo Do Kwon, and Moo Do Kwon is the Korean translation of Shotokan Karate, Moo Do Kwon split off into two groups forming TSD and TKD
Its TangSooDo. Cobra Kai Originated from TangSooDo but I do hate how they only do Taekwondo Kicks and not represent the Art itself. Taekwondo will just get called "Karate" all over again instead of it actually being its own martial arts which is rooted from karate but has branched off long ago. Tangsoodo is much more closer to Karate in terms of Techniques and such, hence the nickname "Korean Karate"
I have been waiting for this and it was worth it. About getting more flexible. I stretch every night before I sleep. Stretch the outside of the hips, a side split and the hamstrings
FINALLY, been waiting like a year for this. But really?? Not Barnes vs Johnny reaction? My fav season is 1 and fav character off martial arts ability Kwon
the style of cobra kai is tang soo do what is a korean style of karate kreese learned it in the korean war the us military used there own style agianst them thats why you see cobra kai what came from kreese and silver using many teakwondo techniques. its karate with some teakwondo in it
It definitely isnt tournament legal. Its very difficult to control and could easily land your opponent a trip to the hospital if you dont execute it perfectly.

Cobra Kai is Tang Soo Do, according to the back story with Kreese back when he was in Vietnam.
Ah, Tang Soo Do, the brother to Taekwondo
That flipping kick Kwon did is called the Rolling Thunder, it’s used in the UFC. Justin Gaethje tried it against Max Holloway a few months ago and missed, and then Max laid him out with 1 sec to spare in the whole fight.
the guy you were watching at 1:11 is Brandon H Lee and they are using taekwondo cuz hes the taekwondo world champion
Cobra Kai is confirmed to be tang soo do. It’s very similar to shotokan or teakwondo
i have just started kyokushin karate because of you Nat thank you
The style in korea they use in cobra kai is tang soo doo its like if karate and taekwondo had a secret love child
Not just karate and taekwondo. It also has some kung fu and other arts, including judo. Tang soo do is super umbrella now and continues to grow.

Really really good show
But you might wanna know the backstory of karate kid
the one who beat those 3 by him self is international taekwondo champion in both USA and Korea
yeah tanner buchanan (robby) was around black belt level in taekwondo before joining the cast
He's also a practitioner of Muay Thai. I kinda wanna see Tanner in a movie that allows him to lean more into the kickboxing aspect of his arsenal.
It's Tang Soo Do .. heavily influenced by Tae Kwon Do, but still karate~
In the first clip, the actors, especially Brandon H Lee, are trained in taekwondo, although the marital art they're representing is tangsoodo
Video idea: Sparring random people at the MMA gym until i get knocked out, also cobra kai is not karate its tang soo do
They say it’s Karate but yea it’s Tang soo do but Mike Barnes is Shotokan Karate but realistically it’s just mix martial arts
Not like mma but multiple martial arts
Brother getting knocked out in an MMA gym is not a normal occurrence or a good thing . Unless it’s hard sparring that video will last forever.
