      Indeed! Statistics show that the heat kills more than the cold. Anything above 35ºC is really dangerous for the human body. On the other side, it is possible to tolerate 3ºC for a longer period of time. Even hypothermia is a mechanism of defence for the body, as it slows down its functions to save energy. But hyperthermia denatures body proteins leading to bodily functions shutting down, which if too extensive, or in critical areas, lead to death.

    Very happy with this forecast.
    Just got back from Pembrookshire after a 3 day break, Monday was horrendous, but Tuesday and Today were great and now a week of dry and sun in Oxfordshire.
    So glad the heat only lasts a few days - enough to enjoy it, but not enough for it to heat the house up.
    That's the problem with have in the UK - our houses are built to retain heat, so more than 3 or 4 days of very hot weather becomes a nightmare, as there's no escape from it, unless you have an aircon, which not many homes here have. By an aircon, I mean a real wall mounted one, not those pathetic portable ones that struggle to cool a cupboard, let alone a lounge or bedroom.
    Mid-20's is just perfect for the whole of summer as far as I'm concerned.
    And thank goodness for the Atlantic.
    Climate breakdown is going to get steadily worse and soon, prolonged 40c plus summers on the Continent will be the norm.
    That'll touch us a bit in the east on occassion - but we have that get-out-of-jail free card in the shape of the Atlantic.

    • @minimumsky5
      @minimumsky5 Месяц назад +7

      It was updated a few years ago to be easier to see for those with reduced colour vision, including total colour blindness, and one of the changes was to make the red colours darker. It also included a higher max temp of around 45C.

    • @Xenon777_
      @Xenon777_ Месяц назад +4

      It's just the colour gradient of the key used to represent the temperatures. Since 30c is quite high for the UK, it is shown as red to show heat or to draw attention to it. When we had the 40c heatwave, the temps in the UK varied from about 15 - 41c on the maps, so a large colour scale was needed to represent this difference which went from green, to yellow, amber then dark red. It's the same principal for cold winter temps when they appear as purple, etc.

      The average summer temperature for London is only 23C so when you get values that far exceed that for several days, it becomes a heatwave. The Met Office have a Deep Dive video explaining the different criteria for heatwaves depending on the average temperatures for the region, I just forget which one it is now.

    • @carolinebennett5615

      Yeah but for how long a wave is a week or more not a day

    • @felipecorrea9075
      @felipecorrea9075 Месяц назад

      @@dave788it is defined as 3 consecutive days at or above the threshold for a given location. In this case, London may experience three days at pr above 28ºC (their threshold). If this happens, you have met the criteria for a heatwave. But, if any of those three days stays below 28ºC, then the heatwave will not occur.

    • @felipecorrea9075
      @felipecorrea9075 Месяц назад

      @@dave788 to be clearer, in the past the definition was three consecutive days at or above 5ºC compared to any given location average maximum temperature. But, as many close locations have slightly different averages, due to orography (altitude, closeness to the sea, etc), it would be quite difficult to show a map pinpointing every different weather station and if a heatwave has or hasn't happened there. So, in my humble opinion, the MetOffice, correctly, averaged the temperatures in a broad area with likewise maximum temperatures, and established these thresholds (which are, in fact, 5ºC at or above the averaged maximum temperature for that area). Long story short, it has been studied and shown that three days are enough to cause some health issues on more vulnerable individuals, and if you consider that cooler climates often don't have air conditioning (as is the case here in England - and the whole of the United Kingdom, to be fair), the heat builds up inside the houses. In my experience, warmer nights are way worse than hot days, but houses here have such thick walls that even a fresh, but short, night is not capable of cooling off the interior. Combine that three days in a row, and it gets quite uncomfortable, and potentially dangerous.

    Surely the jet stream has been moving more to the north of the UK this week, and that's why temperatures have been on the up, and this combination of being on the warm side of the jet and southerly air-flow will continue to allow heat to build for the rest of this week and into the weekend (away from the north and west).

    This summer has been superb. No mozzie bites, no spiders, low hay fever, no constantly sweating, no sun burn, no covering myself in sun cream, comfortable to work in, comfortable to exercise in, comfortable to sleep in. Roll on Autumn.
