  • Jason Reitman has directed some of our favorite films of the last decade--Juno, Thank You For Smoking, Young Adult, and Up In the Air. Avoiding the allure of big-budget blockbusters, Jason instead tells emotionally-intense stories in smaller films. He visits The Talking Room to discuss the appeal of crafting complex, resonant characters, his approach to selecting projects, and growing up on film sets.

I love interviews, but this show beats them all. Adam, you are FABULOUS at interviewing people. It seems like everyone you've interviewed at some point has said "wow, that's a REALLY great question".

What a wonderful peak into someone's creative process. As a musician, explaining to my band mates the idea of a song being a song, and having its own voice, not necessarily the voice WE want to give it, is one of the hardest parts of the creative process. Mr. Reitman explained that aspect perfectly.

Whenever you happen to hang up your Mythbusters boots, Mr. Savage, I'd implore you to consider doing more of these talks. While they might not satisfy the 'maker' in you, they are a gift to us, the listeners. Many thanks for many hours well spent.

I think Jason's comment around 18:50 is fairly profound: He grew up the child of parents who did "really well", and as a result never had to worry about the money. He didn't live the life of a spoiled do-nothing playboy (some do), he didn't become an asshole (some do that, too). Instead, he used his freedom to make the artistic choices that he wanted to, and in the process made fat stacks himself.
With the solidification of the "gig economy", it seems pretty obvious that things like affordable healthcare you can't lose will only grow in importance, and that having a certain safety net which only allows you to fall so far actually leads to more entrepreneurism and risk-taking. This benefits both individuals and society. Some people have no ambition; that's just a fact. But in my experience, on average, people want to make a difference and create something.

This is very quickly becoming my favorite video series, I'm going to have to go back and watch the backlog. I'll be honest, Thank You for Smoking is the only one of his movies I've ever seen and didn't even know by the name who he was, but again this is an awesome interview. Definitely going to go watch the rest of them now.

Enjoyed that interview. Jason just strikes me as very genuine in his intentions. I rarely see so much revealed about a director's personality and Adam set the perfect stage with a comfortable, "living room conversation" feel. I'm a lot more interested in Jason's films for it.

Many people are good in speaking, Adam is amazing in listening and asking questions, with just enough of himself and his storie to add to flavour the interview. Mythbusters should never end for many reasons, but if it ever does, the TV/radio channels should do a deatmatch who gets Adam.

Tarantino, and Rodriquez were pretty rock, and roll, but Sam Peckinpah was pretty badass a few decades before. Iron cross is one of the best war movies ever, shows the soldiers of the Werchmant as Human and shows how Officers can be terrible terrible people. Then there is The Wild Bunch which has inspired so many different things. Red dead redemption basically takes the story of the wild bunch, there is scenario for Cowboy action shooting based on it. Countless other movies have taken inspiration from it. Then there is just The Getaway with Steve McQueen and Ali Macgraw which is just a good watch. Then straw dogs, and Bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia which are both excellent movies. He's also made a few other westerns that are worth a watch, and a few others that are meh, but he really brought some really crazy concepts to film.
