The "useless link" is for local use, with Windows Explorer for example. You can add a network location to that local IP rather than going "out and then back" through your external IP. It just makes things a little bit easier. Hope this helps clarify things for anyone who comes along! :)

yeah to the best of my ability, in all areas too. I have since moved on to the Synology RT2600, Really really awesome router. I love their NAS "Servers", and if your lucky enough to have a syno nas and a router, your set. I am just waiting for Syno to release their next gen wifi 6 router.

This was great, thank you for the help. The only question I have is about setting the unique name for the asuscomm, anything I put in comes back as invalid. Is there a naming convention or somewhere to help how to set that part up?

Hi Sukhwani, Thank you for the feedback, Ill keep in mind in future to have that volume a bit louder. I have isolated my servers so there sound level is much lower now, one of the reasons for the low volume. I know the problem your talking about. Not sure how you would handle it on a mac. when accessing the ftp via a web browser people can only get read access. To read / write you need to (on a windows machine) be at the machine connected to the router and access it via unc path or from any computer use an ftp client such as filezilla. Aslo make sure you have granted the correct permissions to the user accounts.

Yeah that is normal, I hope you backed up your configuration. Makes restoring it so much quicker then having to do everything manually again. Change the IP on your network card to the default of the router to access the web interface again. then you can restore your settings back to the way they were.
what format should I use? I want to READ from my ipad, mac and windows computers.

Yes Gamer Cow, you can port forward on the router.
Marek, Like mentioned to Sukhwani, Using an ftp client software will give you more control over your ftp. Filezilla is a great free tool. You will need to know the name of the device. this is found out by going to your router, it will be listed under miscellaneous in USB application. On a windows computer you can also get an explorer root by opening a run box and typing in the device name with two slashes. Example device is called FTPKEY you would enter \\FTPKEY.
Hi, my lan wire that connects my router to the modem stopped lighting up after I updated the firmware after all the setup. I remember it said connect with another IP address or something similar to that, but I'm not 100% sure. So the problem is that theres no connection / wifi at all because the lan wire is somehow not connected to the modem from my router. Is there a fix to this? Thanks

How secure are these setups? I'm not actually convinced as I just tested a USB key connected to my router that I was planning to access over the internet now and then to collect some files but when I tried to connect via Filezilla it said :
Status: Insecure server, it does not support FTP over TLS. So this means my password would be transmitted over the internet insecurely?
Great presentation. Very helpful. I setup a media server - works fine. I added an ftp server following your instructions but cannot link to the ftp server - it doesn't showup in my network - using windows 10. Any thoughts on the problem?

Excellent news Marek, Glad to hear it, Do check for new firmwares from asus from time to time as they do update the firmwares with new features and improvements from time to time. Also check out www.lostrealm.ca/tower/ for some great custom firmwares for the routers as well.
is there any way to host a very simple website from this?
I have a T-mobile wifi router that T-Mo was giving away to support wifi calling. In reality it is the ASUS AC1900. Is there a way to flash it with the ASUS firmware and get rid of the T-Mo DNS and other misc things from T-Mo.

Tluanghnin thang This depends on how he turns off the internet. If he disconnects cables or unplugs power, then there is not much you can do. If he is using the parental control then the internet is not actually turning off, it is just disabled on the device you are using. Every device capable of using the internet has a network card. and that network card is identified by the router using its hardware coded MAC address. If your brother is blocking your devices he is using the MAC addresses of those devices.
You need to identify what the MAC addresses are on the devices you are using to connect to the internet, then you must find out what the password is to access the router.
On a windows machine press and hold the windows key and tap the letter R, type in CMD, and then type in IPConfig and press enter. Look for default gateway and write down the IP address of the default gateway, next open an internet browser and in the address url bar enter the IP address of the default gateway and hit enter, The next screen will be the screen of the login UI for the router, Enter the user name and password to log into the router, and on the left hand side menu of the router UI click on perental controls and delete your MAC addresses. hit save and log out.
The only way he can find out is if he catches you on the internet after hours, OR if he logs in to the router UI and sees that your mac address is gone.
The trick to making this work is to find out the user name and password. This will involve some creative social hacking.
To do this you will need 3 things,
1. an unsuspcious reason to make him log into the router to check / change something.
2. a new keylogging software (installed on his computer)
3.a way to check the recorded key strokes of the key logger.(needs to be a new key logger, most antiviruses will detect the older ones)

Why i can't copy files into ftp server? If I'm not connected on home network, and same with home network. R/W files is allowed. When I have created ftp server, I have choosed admin rights, maybe that's the problem ?

The same way you set it up to access it from any other device, If you are setting it up via a windows computer then the video above applies to you, accessing the ftp from a tablet is the same as accessing from any other device, you use the ftp url that is provided. There may be some slight changes for mac, but for android and ios the url you have should do the trick, Again people, If you need help please email me.

I have heard there is a firmware that can change the power up to 300 for output wifi power.
Ever heard of it. I am a disabled vet and share internet with others like me. I have to send out the signal around 1200 feet. Right now the firmware lets me go to 200. II have also heard ASUS has a new firmware and it takes away that option all together

you cant connect because is not secure. this share require obsolete smb1 protocol...you system requires smb2 protocol or higher. how do i do this??

i follow your step, when i click on ftp://192.168.1.1 i can see the hardisk root folder but when i click on the fttt:// name.asuscomm.com, the link does not work for me. any help is appreciated

Hi Erik, It has been over a decade since I have owned this device and would no longer be familler with the firmwar that you are running on it. "i know this is a terrible answer" but your best bet here would be to contact asus support. As a leader in the IT Industry my recommendation now would be to not have storage attached to your router but to set up a NAS, I can recommend Synology. Also, wireless technology has advanced alot in the last 10 years, maybe you should look into something a little more with the times? (the 66u of course is still a fine router)

The ip address for your router isn't always 192.168.1.1

I have a question. I can access my usb disk from the ftp address and the AIcloud app but i can't access it from the 3g network on my phone. There is a router/modem connected before my asus but that stupid piece of shit that my isp provided can't be set into bridged mode.

Ok, so I would recommend that you make sure that your router firmware is up to date with either stock or one from Merlin's Tower.www.lostrealm.ca/tower/
To Port forward. go to www.portforward.com. From the menu on the left and side select list of all routers. (CTRL + F) search and find your router manufacturer. Click on the Manufacturer (in my case Asus) close the ad and then search for your router model (CTRL + F) search and find your router model, In my case its now the rt-ac87u.
next select the game, program service what ever you are trying to port forward to.
for this example i randomly decided to choose world of warcraft.
(TIP - Note if you know the ports to forward, it does not matter what you select, If you do not know the ports you need to foward, then search for what ever it is your trying to use and follow the instructions which include the nessesary ports you need)
(for this example i am randomly choosing port 5001 and like mentioned above i have chosen WOW, this is what you do when the service is not listed and you know what port you need)
So i click on WOW and i scroll down a little bit untill i see the section that says
Don't Skip This Step! [Enter static IP Address]
Enter your static ip address here, and scroll on down untill you see the other text boxes saying Name.
Enter a name and enter the port exactly as you see it there, and remember to (a) save and (b) make sure port forwarding is enabled.
and this will definatly solve your issue, IF IT DOES NOT WORK.
it is because of 3 things.
1. you do not have have a static IP address and in this case Email me and ill help with that, asidscript@gmail.com
2. your something is blocking the port(s) firewall, or ISP
3. you have not followed my instructions correctly and should contact me so that i can help even further.

Super helpful video... But the volume's too low... I am using Mac, When I connect to Asus Router FTP using Go > Connect to Server option, The USD HDD gets mounted. I then get read only access to the mounted volume. I am not able to write or delete anything from the drive. Any idea what I need to do to correct it?

how can i access root directory of my USB ? I have R/W access to already existing folders, but I get access error when I try to create/copy something to root directory. is it supposed to be this way ?

I actually tried to update it's firmware right after I bought it, with "update" button in router's administration menu, but it told it is already the newest, but I checked it now on ASUS's website and I found firmware from 14/06/2014 - 3.0.0.4.374.5517. I downloaded it and installed and now it's working for me too. cool ;)

You need to connect your router directly to the public IP address, I think there is one existing router gateway present that is providing the private IP address to your router

boerni18 I have the problem solved mate. It is a bug in Google Chrome. So you should use an other browser to create users :). The rest should work fine.

Not really possible. He may have created a wireless network just for you - with that rule.
If there's another network with the same strong signal - you can ask his friends for that information as they probably used it while a guest at your home. Don't make it seem suspicious :)

To login, (assuming you have a home setup with no more network devices, Your router would be your default gateway) Open command prompt and type IPCONFIG /all and look for the ip of your default gateway. Then enter that IP into a web browser, there you will be prompted to enter in your user name and password
Your probably right. They release firmware updates frequently to fix issues. My advise is to not use the router as a file server
