Totally agree about using cheap materials for painting on - very liberating. I've even used stuff like plasterboard and concrete sheet. Really enjoying your videos and love your style. Thanks from NZ.
I have always bought the Masonite that is only finished on one side, because the unfinished side has an "almost canvas" like pattern on it. I cover the unfinished side with 4 coats of gesso, alternating brush/roller directions, and have never had a panel warp. Done this with panels up to 24x36.
Would love to see your materials used / suggested in your description ☺️ Will be rewatching to take meticulous notes! Have some painter friends here in the bay and I think these would be awesome gifts to make for our “canvas nights”
This is awesome! I'll have to try this out. Canvas can get pricey! And like you said, you can definitely get nervous with experimenting when you're invested financially in the support.
Can you do a video also on your art journey? Did you study art in college? What lead up to your career? Im getting my bachelors in fine arts and would love to know how everything falls into place after 😊
Awesome! Yes, framing is the dilemma always - I use the $1.19 fence panels from Home depot, split them and fill in corners with putty. If ya got any quick tips on framing, please make a video.
You are such a great guy! It comes through in all that you do. We appreciate your sharing with us your money saving advice like this one. Wish I was handy with power tools or even had them...so may of us don’t have them, so we are stuck with $$ panels that we have to buy.
Can I ask a really really dumb question please? Masonite / hardboard like that has the painted side (white in this case), then the back of it that is that sort of weird cardboardy stuff with like loads of crosses printed into it to add texture- normally the 'b' side that you don't see? So you have lightly sanded that & then primed that? Huh? Or have you gotten twin faced hardboard with two 'presentation' faces on it- one white, one the usual brown colour? Sorry to sound thick, but in the UK Ive only ever really seen the one sided stuff with brown one side & checker texture on the other, and zooming in on the video isn't helping much!
Yes I am wondering that too. Some hardboard has a texture on the back like an imprinted pattern and is rough and not smooth at all. I WISH we could get SupaWood in the USA!!!! UUUUUUGGHHHHHH.
Hi Again Michael….You probably don’t look too much at the comments on these older videos. How did the larger panels work out? Warping? Or OK? Cheers-Greg
@@chamberlainpaintings Thanks for getting back to me. I’ve had a few birch panels warp on me even with a cradle and 2 coats of gesso on both sides and edges. Thinking about using MDF board, but concerned about formaldehyde leaching out from under the gessoed coats. How close to the edges of the board to you bring your cradles? Cheers-Greg
I prefer hardboard to MDF for durability. I buy hardboard that’s been painted on one side so I only have to seal one side. I’ve had no problems with warping! The cradle goes right to the edge of the panel. That way you’re strengthening/protecting the most vulnerable part of the panel (the corners and edges).
@@chamberlainpaintings Thanks for your help man. I gotcha. I like the idea of using boards and I can see you're a hard worker, but I also like the texture of a canvas on my brush so I figured I would see what you were doing beyond a roller. Boards with gesso on a roller only is just a bit too slick for me.
i need to make some panels too for oil painting. Im also wanting to use gesso or acrylic primer, but someone told me that even though the oil paint will stick to the gesso, it does not form a chemical bond with it, and so will not be archival. Have you heard about this? I too want to experiment lots, but the work im making is now turning out good, so i would also like my paintings to last. What type of wood do u think i should paint on for it to be archival, and do u know how i should prepare this wood for archival? Thankyou
Thanks' for the video, but I have a question ... If you mentioned this I apologize, but are the panels you use here tempered or untempered? If they are untempered, is there a reason you didn't seal them for moisture resistance first, or is the gesso good enough?
Worse than the cardboard painted on by Toulouse Lautrec, Nicolai Fechin, Jamie Wyeth and many others?!! You've got outdated information my friend. Present day hardboard it is pure cellulose fiber (wood); it has no additives, fillers, glues or resins added. It is one of the most stable supports for oil painting available today. 😊👍
@@chamberlainpaintings if you paint something on a canvas, it easy for conserves to transfer the painting on a second canvass, to fix the cracks or any damage. Not to hardboard. Except if you have glue a canvas on a hardboard
@@ΑΝΤΩΝΗΣΣΜΥΡΝΙΟΣ How long do you want your paintings to last? I think most paintings are at higher risk of being buried in a landfill than deteriorating due to the quality of the materials.

Great video, thanks Mike!
I use the pumice and I like it. Good suggestion. I forgot to thin with water. Live and learn.
Thanks for the link 👍🏻
$10 is such a good bargain for a 30x30!

Ok will do! 😊
I always put some acrylic paint in with the last coat of gesso to tone the support. I do the same thing when I use canvas too.
I did that for a while, but now I like using transparent colors over a white support. What color do you tone with?
@@chamberlainpaintings usually a yellow ochre or some burnt siena. Nothing extreme but helps warm everything up.

You should do a video with Emma !!!

very cool, wish I did all this stuff haha
Please make a video on how you attach the supports to the masonite with liquid nails. Love your videos, they are very useful, greetings from Colombia
I have never painted in my life. Why am I watching this video? But more importantly, why do I enjoy it?
Because there is an artist inside you wanting to get out..
So Michael how did the large panels work out with the whiteboard on your cradles? Cheers -Greg
Informative. I am going to make an attempt at making some of these. I found the pumice powder on Amazon.

Loving this series Mike! Camera image looking extra sharp today (what camera do you use by the way?), thinking of picking up a G7X MII.
Happy summer!
Thanks! I'm using a G7X Mll.
Have done an oil toning on gesso coatings? I guess this stuff looks like dry erase board.

Do you ever make a texture on the board for your brush strokes before working? If so, how? Had to edit, what I mean by working, is painting. Haha
I don't really texture the panels. Some people make a texture by doing random brush strokes with a large house painting brush.

They’re tempered and they’re already sealed on one side!

60× 48

Why don't you seal it before the gesso?
The gesso seals it. That’s the point of gesso 👍
@@chamberlainpaintingsthank you. that's what i thought, i had just heard you still needed to seal it so the board doesn't bleed into the painting.
