  • Back again turning some of the prettiest maple I have ever seen & this time I am making a hollow form from it. I am slowly starting to get back into turning hollow forms after taking a break from them for quiet sometime but looking forward to a few new & upcoming ideas I have for a few pieces in the future. Let me know if you would like to see more hollow forms turned & also if you're a woodturner, do you enjoy turning hollow forms!

    I love working with maple also. And i know what you mean when you say "the picture doesn't do it justice". You finish a piece, and you're blown away by the beauty in the wood, so you take a picture, look at it, and say to yourself that you must not have had the right angle. Then after 10 different angles you realize a picture just isn't going to capture what your eyes are seeing!!! Great hollow form! Thanks!

      You summed it up better than I could; that is exactly what happened! I spent about 30 minutes trying to get a thumbnail and some photos just trying to capture the best details but its a challenge for sure.

Thank you for taking the time to inspire people like me. One thing I haven't been able to pick up from your videos though is which finish do you prefer? Your work is entertaining and inspiring! When you "once turn" a bowl, how long do you wait before sanding and oiling, and how do you prevent cracking during that time?

    • @andrewmccarn
      @andrewmccarn  Год назад

      Thanks!! I typically wait around 4 weeks if it needs to be finished. If possible I let it sit longer. My routine is after turning, bring it into my office to sit in front of the AC vent for a few weeks to slowly dry it out and then let it sit in the shop for at least a week or two before finishing. If it’s a bowl that’s prone to cracking, I’ll sometimes coat it with some water based polyurethane - sometimes multiple coats the first few weeks but other than that I don’t really do anything. I’ve been using the process for years after experimenting with it and it’s been the most successful way to dry bowls I have done. It’s odd but it works lol

    Hey Andrew, wich is the maximum hight cut of your band saw?

  • @AlexGarcia-ly9fq
    @AlexGarcia-ly9fq Год назад

    SO, can I ask a question? Why did you opt for the 18/36 instead of the 24/36? Given you propensity for turning larger pieces, I would think that the 24" lathe would better suit your needs.

    • @andrewmccarn
      @andrewmccarn  Год назад

      I would have loved to get the 24/36 but sadly my shop is only wired for 110v. I have had some quotes but I would have to practically get my shop completely re-wired because of how the current wiring is and that puts it just a little out of my budget for the moment. Hopefully one day though, being able to turn 24" between centers is the dream lol
