  • Whenever I go shopping for new smart home products, I start to get confused by the fact that TP-Link sell products under two DIFFERENT brands: Kasa and Tapo.
To make matters worse, both Kasa and Tapo seem to sell the same type of products, meaning that they are competing with each other.
But why is this? And are there any real-world differences between Kasa and Tapo? I discuss all this (and more) in this video. The individual sections are:
    00:00 Intro
00:23 Early Kasa and Tapo Differences
    00:38 Long Live Tapo..?
    01:50 Kasa Is Wi-Fi Based
    02:37 How Tapo Are Different
    04:18 Is A Dual-Brand Approach Unusual?
    05:20 Final Thoughts

Glad to hear the Kasa brand isn't going away, focused on building a solid wifi system since I only needed a handful of smart switches/outlets

This is ridiculous. I wasn't paying enough attention and accidentally bought two tapo switches on Amazon thinking they were kasa (I think they were labeled as a "newer model" of the switches I wanted) and now I have to decide if I want to return them or try to integrate with my existing kasa setup

From my understanding: tapo products on wifi existed before the tapo sub 1ghz band products (IP cameras). The Kasa brand was developed by the US team and focussed mainly on north America with some products making it to other continents, the Tapo brand was developed by the chinese team and aimed at the rest of the world, it arrived a few years after kasa did. Though some kasa products that sell well are being continued across europe. It looks like Kasa will eventually integrate into the Tapo ecosystem completely since most kasa products now work with the tapo app and there are no new kasa products being introduced outside of north america. Looking at the website, it seems kasa is being sold more actively in the UK than in the rest of europe so it probably very much depends on the region.

You explain all this by assuming that there was a merger or buyout without solid planning. That is certainly what's happening and your conclusion is correct. The track record of mergers and buyouts overall is pretty terrible. I knew the stats when working for my MBA. I remembered they were so bad it was a wonder why anyone tried. But it is hope that springs eternal within the human breast. Most business leaders I met were certain they could do anything, no matter how many others had tried and failed. As long as a few can get rich making it work we will see businesses try again and again.

As of now, both Kasa and Tapo have Matter devices, meaning neither actually needs 2.4 GHz wifi to work.

They still have Matter over WiFi devices like the KP125M

Hello, you are a little misinformed and you are spreading partially false information, namely that the Kasa also have a low-frequency hub (KH100), not only Tapo,to which various sensors are connected, including thermostats for radiators, I use these products.

I found Tapo to be a load of unreliable junk compared to Kasa.

Why do you think that Tapo and Kasa are of the same quality?
