Extended SMC Reset - Unable to Power On Macbook Air

- Can't power on your laptop? Your issue could be related to the System Management Controller. If it is! Then this could be your solution to a non working macbook!
NOTE: This will only work if the original SMC reset did not work. If you have tried both the original SMC reset and this extended method and your computer still has not responded...then your problem lies elsewhere. This is simply just one method in getting your macbook to boot up, assuming the underlying issue is just residual power that needs to be reset or drained out. Other factors could be related to other hardware issues (i.e. ram, hdd, battery, charger, etc.).
Try doing an Extended SMC Reset:
1. Battery must be below 100% (leave the ac adapter unplugged for a couple hours (maybe even half the day) it will self discharge).
2. AC charge adapter must be plugged in
3. Amber steady light must be present
4. Hold down the left Shift+Control+Option keys and the Power key at the same time
5. Let go of all the keys
6. The led light on the charger will change from amber to green
7. QUICKLY PULL OUT and disconnect the charge cable before the green LED change back to amber
8. Your computer will automatically boot up now with the apple logo with the chime (If your computer is working perfectly before, it will not auto boot up FYI)
9. If your computer automatically shuts off again, please repeat these steps followed by a NVRAM / PRAM reset
10. Additionally, make sure your SMC software is up to date: support.apple.com/en-us/HT203196
After powering on this laptop, I realized her hard drive was full and unable to allow for updates. When this happens, ram is usually a place holder. And when that gets full, many applications tend to not open correctly. I would advise anyone to clear up and remove unneeded files, applications, transfer large media files to an external hard drive (if available), and to update their operating system to the latest version.

This actually worked. For the first time in a month or two, my battery doesn’t indicate “service battery”. I did have to do a PRAM reset after it... but seems normal now. Cheers!!$

Did you discharge the battery? If so how did you?
Worked brilliantly. Had my MacBook Air 2018 turn black during an update and would not turn on . This method works brilliantly . Just an add on - if at all the Combination does not work in one shot , pls try 3-4 times . Mine worked on the 4th try to power up . Certainly saved me a few hundred $$ . Big thumbs up 👏👍
Thanks for making this video, my MacBook Pro had been sitting for quite a while and I guess the battery had powered down too low, but I had tried the basic reset by holding shift, control, option and power and they didn’t work but your way of quickly removing power cord after all that did work, amazing, thanks so much. Now my computer is charging normally and the fans aren’t running full speed.

how do you make the battery non full when it is already full.
If none of the methods work, consider leaving the laptop flip upside down before opening the back panel. I was going to try the last method after the others failed, but didn't have small screwdriver. After leaving it flipped, I did try try to power on once more and it works. Likely the socket loosen up a bit after I left the laptop upside down, thus corrected the problem. Thank you for sharing your expertise. Couldn't have done it without you.

You are my hero, my MacBook Pro unibody 2012 had the battery replaced, randomly died at 49% and couldn’t get it to turn on, all that happened was that the white light on the front would flash every second the power button was held, I’ve never been so pleased to hear the Mac bong when it came on!
Not normally one for leaving reviews but this literally saved my macbook!
My fans were 100%, lights stopped on charger, not seeing the battery in OS or diagnostics and keyboard lights had stopped... but it was booting in.
I had tried all usual resets and was about to try re-installing the OS just in case lol
Took 3 attempts, didn't actually boot up itself but the lights came back on charger after 1st attempt, the 3rd i decided to power the mac on, straight in and on as normal!

Tried everything before seeing this post. For me it didn’t seem to work right away. Then with the computer still unplugged, I held the power key for 10 second and let go. Then pushed the power key again and a minute later all of a sudden it turned on!!!! Thank you!!

If it still doesn’t turn on, “for macbook air”, press shift+control+option(left side of the keyboard)+power for 5 seconds then release them when the charger colour turns into green do it the same thing again but this time only release the shift control and option, keep holding the power button till macbook turns on

Man you saved my life, was searching for 2012 retina macbook and nothing came up. But this MacBook Air tutorial worked! I thought I lost everything from school.
This was able to work on my 2015 MacBook for anyone interested. I tried other resets and none worked but this one did the trick. I had a black screen with no sound or light in the keyboard so thank you for your video!!

If you follow these instructions and it doesn't work, don't fret. Open the back of your MacBook Air, disconnect and reconnect the battery cable. Then put the cover back on, flip the computer over, and follow the instructions again. That's what my MacBook Air requires to turn back on.
