    ive been watching tutorial videos for MANY years... This is hands down the best video I have ever seen. You didn't go too fast, You didn't go too slow. You showed a bunch of useful information and ways they get used in real situations. You are really skilled at knowing what needs to be conveyed about a tools capabilities. I subscribed at the end of the video something I RARELY do... and hardly ever post positive youtube comments. THAT is how good I think you are at teaching through this medium.

    I'm an expert 3d artist in 3ds max but after i see zbrush workflow specially this polygon modeling, i think this was a huge threat to maya and 3ds max. After 5years or more may be, zbrush will also have a rigging system ,dynamic effects, animation etc until it becomes a full pack 3d software for all types of uses such as games, movies, motion graphics, digital painting/sculpting etc. But it's just a prediction though haha

      Zbrush is a tool that works great in a pipeline, so no need for it to become a full 3d package. It's great at what it does: get out extremely high-res models fast, both organic and hardedge and provide ways to take these down to lowres models with the necessary maps to incorporate all the details. They didn't invest in having an internal render-engine, but rather chose to create a keyshot bridge which is actually quite smart.

      This doesn't compare to 3DS max... I think in a professional 3D modelling setting 3Ds max and maya have nothing to worry about; I'm still a student so I probably don't know as much as you but from what I've seen you have more control in 3DS max, especially over the poly count, which is important; I just use Zbrush for making normal maps, to imitate detail in my 3D models

      I can only hope zbrush could become almost a 1 package fits all. 3ds max and maya have become stagnant and priced ridiculously. just another corporate machine.

      @@yasaipicles6295 Zbrush only does about a tenth of what maya and 3ds can do. It appeals to a massive industry of advertisement, video game, cartoon, etc. where zbrush is quite literally just a scultping tool (A really good sculpting tool). I've found though Zbrush is industry standard because of how fast it allows artists to create assets with a high to lowpoly workflow. I can pump out a full retopologized model in a day if im confident in my sculpting and retopo skills which is awesome.

    Wow, the Zbrush modeler is so powerful. That bridging of two holes 18:00 with different edge amounts is incredible. Michael Pavlovich is the best Zbrush teacher I've seen. Great videos.

    Excellent tutorial . I am a 3d jewellery CAD ( Rhino and Matrix gemvision ) . I use Zbrush for sculpting on jewellery and medals , pins . Still have a lot to learn in Zbrush . And this tutorial is really great . Thank you .

    Yeah it's all preference. I bet if some guy did a tutorial on creating a train using just Zbrush, people would still not be convinced simply because people do not want to give up the software they already invested in. Me personally the more software you know more power to you. Thank you Pixologic and Autodesk.for providing the tools. Good job Mr. Pavlovich very educational.

    Fantastic video Michael! Joseph was very specific in his billion videos on Zmodeler... but .... they were kind of putting me to sleep, and didn't feel as practical and engaging as yours. Your video definitely made me feel like I've got more of a grasp on it -- and you covered some things he didn't, one of which is what I was looking for (smaller brush size = faster Qmesh interaction).

    Man this the best zmodeler tutorial so far, I am a long time maya user when zmodeler was introduced I didn't wanna waste my time trying to learn the tool because the other tutorials were not making sense.Now I think I will be able to use it thanks to you :-)

    Great tutorial. I dont get why on nearly every zbrush video theres complaints about the UI. I started doing 3d art using silo3d then moved into Max so Im used to poly modeling but I understood that zbrush was a sculpting software so obviously things were supposed to be different. Maybe because Im used to drawing is probably why, zbrush really feels like drawing to me but come on folks if you need help getting started on something, its laughable how spoiled we are compared to how it was 10 years even 5 years ago. But even back then you could buy a damn book & just take notes, believe me I did that with Max to learn the UI & would watch timelapse videos of some badass modelers for inspiration & just to observe the logic & workflow. Now we have a million different videos with a million different perspectives for FREE all in 1080p with great talented people like Pavlovich who are actually EAGER to teach us all lol just let that sink in. Lets not forget that a poly modeler like Max was originally an architectural design program, we appropriated it for game design. Zbrush was made for sculpting organic forms, again we appropriated it for hard surface stuff, just so happens that pixologic caught on & began implementing hard surfacing tools for us. I was reluctant to use zbrush for hard surfacing myself, I thought Ive invested enough time into poly modeling I'll just use zbrush for organic stuff. But as I got more into concept art I realized that its very difficult to do fast concept design with poly tools, at least for me. Zbrush again is like drawing or painting so you can explore shapes pretty quickly is the way I see it.

    Zbrush is properly the most user unfriendly software i have ever tried but its by far the most powerful. Menus are all over the place. Coming from 15 years of Art direction, artschol Knowing the workflow of Adobe products, Auto desk felt like a natural step. Getting into Zbrush was just extremely slow and frustrating. Took me well over half a year so master the easy things. Some things Zbrush could be better is Retyppo & UV´s ( feel forced to use 3D coat). R7 is great for box modeling indeed. Pix logic always delivers. / Designer @ dice

    Michael could you make some more videos on how to make brickwalls, bridges, terrains ect. I enjoy making models and need to learn more from zbrushes and how to make them. great video

    I had to watch this video again to have it all sink in and as an owner of Zbrush and 3DS Max, I have to say these tools are equally powerful to Max's and even faster! I love Max for the simpler learning curve and I hope when Zbrush 5 actually comes out that the organization of the menus, tools and brushes would be simplified similar to Max's. Simplification will lower the learning curve. Press Z, B and then M is just too much for me and I have to write that down and place the notes on my desk.
    Truespace down fall was because of complex layers and layers of icons. There are Zbrush users who will only use the program just for characters and common objects modeling using something else. I want to learn Zbrush and use it to model characters as well making game assets like a pirate chest. My 3DS Max might be jealous!

      Just as an aside, hover over any button in zbrush and hit ctl+alt, then hit a key combination to assign a hotkey to that button; for the zmodeler brush, instead of hitting z, b, m, go into the brush palette, find the zmodeler brush, hold ctl+alt, then click the zmodeler brush, and assign a hotkey (I have mine assigned to alt+q). Hotkeys and custom menus are super useful once you get comfortable; custom hotkeys, interface, and menus are covered here: ruclips.net/video/1XYrCGRYBss/видео.html
      So you can simplify based on what you need to use, but I do understand, there's a lot of stuff in there, so you have to learn it first in order to simplify, which isn't easy! But hopefully the intro to zbrush series will cover enough so that you can make informed decisions on what you need to keep, and what you can stash away for a rainy day.

    This is an excellent tutorial! I love the way you demonstrate and explain the detailed process....
    question...is there a way to add an edge between two vertices (like you might do in Maya with the "multi-cut-tool")..?
    I havent found a solution for this...

    Very nice walkthrough, thx! I've been playing around with the Zmodeler last night which was a lot of fun. One thing that I couldn't get to work was a rounded bevel on one edgeloop without creasing and using all the smooth options that increase the polycount so much. I might have overlooked something. Any ideas?!

      Michael Pavlovich A little workaround could be to slightly extrude two faces and fill the gap with a bridge. Not really preferable though. Another thing that surprised me is that it seems you can't do an inward bridge.

    Thanks!But there are so many brushes A-Z and it makes my head spin! Why can't they categorize the brushes and have a tree/branch style of organization? Not all brushes edit the shape but do other things like brushing on a tool.

    QBRUSH is key to hardsurface modelling and the need to GoZ between other applications like MODO or MAYA... still the only thing I'm seeing is if ZBRUSH has a measuring system where you can model exactly to size rather than eye balling stuff or using reference images... then software like MODO is king when following drawings.

    Michael, have you found a way to extrude edge loop directly? Extrude function seems to produce thickness with the new edge.

    great gift to zbrush users !!! ...only one question can you merge or connect vertices (points ) in zmodeler ?

      3DWORLD.PLANET yes, if the verts are not sitting on top of eachother you can use the vert > stitch option in the zmodeler; if they are sitting on eachother (or close by) and you want to weld more than one, you can use the geometry > modify topology > weldPoints option, and adjust the weld distance to get the results you need!

    Hey michael, just picked up your into to zbrush 2 and 3 and they are great. I just got into zmodeler and am loving it but hope you can answer a question. When I use creasing in my models in zbrush, is there anyway to get those creased edges into another application like Modo or Lightwave? Right now extra edge loops seems to be the only way.

      +35hrgiger oh man it's been a long time since I've used Modo...a quick test would be to use goZ, sometimes it can do some magical stuff. Other than that...I don't think .obj's pass back and forth creasing information (?); the .ma extension I believe does, fbx...maybe? As a kind of hacky work around you could create polygroups for each individual surface that you want creasing between, then use those to convert to creased edges in Modo maybe? Wish I had a better answer for you! It's stuff like this that made me just want to stay in ZBrush lol

      Yeah I dont think creasing info is available through GoZ, I tried making a feature request for support for zb creasing and one of the developers said they didnt find any info on it via GoZ. The best suggestion ive gotten is to use edge weighting but its tedious to have to set that up also. Was just hoping I was missing something obvious. I dont use keyshot so I render in lw or Modo.

      Creasing edges and then adding subdivisions in Max does pass into Zbrush 4R7 when you export from Max as an OBJ. I don't know about vice versa

    Thank you for replying to my question on another video. I really appreciate that. I have another question I was hoping you could help me with. I am trying to add thickness to the inside of a car body I had downloaded. But Qmesh action seems to be disabled. All other actions seem to be fine.

      QMesh can sometimes try and resolve in tight areas; try the extrude option instead (extrude > all polygons or polygroup all or whatever target you're going for--)

      +jose cua oops sorry about the late reply. you can split edge and connect points, you can mask faces and split ring, or you can do visibility selection > slice modifier, but there's not a good "split path" like what you're talking about unfortunately (zbrush realllly doesn't like ngons)
