  • If you are thinking about upgrading and trying to decide if you should, the answer is almost certainly to wait. Every major iPad upgrade that is expected to happen will be taking place in 2024, especially if you are considering an iPad Pro.
In the latest edition of his "Power On" newsletter, Gurman said that the next-generation iPad Pro will be the first major update to the product since 2018, introducing "fundamental changes." The new models will apparently feature the M3 Apple silicon chip, OLED displays, and 11- and 13-inch size options.

Yup. I’ll probably get the current iPad Pro soon. My 10.5 inch pro, probably from year 2016 or 2017 model, is showing its age with only 64GB storage, and increased recharging of battery. As someone (was it Rene Ritchie) once said, if you need it now then just get it, instead of waiting. The iPad Pros last long enough with excellent usability despite the age. If you want longevity the pros won’t let us down. I am not sure about the non-pro models.

The smooth scrolling I’ve noticed it’s not as choppy as the first generation iPad Pro after I’ve updated it to iOS 16. The speakers are something you can really hear the sound Is beautiful. The screen has about 1500 brightness and same technology XDR pro display. Watching videos on RUclips will just automatically go straight to 4K resolution and for the workflow I have? I use it as my main machine. The M2 chip is powerful enough to do that. Pro apps like Final Cut Pro, and logic, Pro, and DaVinci Resolve are smooth as butter on this M2 iPad Pro.

That's what I was thinking. Unless money isn't a problem, for the average person, the best thing to do is buy the M1 or M2 iPad at a discount, or not at a discount if the new iPads increase in price that much. M1 and M2 iPads are plenty powerful for the average user, and that's probably an understatmemt. I have owned an M1 iPad and Magic Keyboard for over two years now, and yeah, there are things about both I would change for sure, but not once have I wished it had more power or a better display.

The thing with iPad (ownership) is i(n general terms) people won't 'just get a small spec jump if they buy this year' - why? Because you can get (and likely have gotten) 3 to 5 years out of your existing iPad and likely those upgrading this year - even getting the current version - would see that as a big spec jump.

To advise to not take advantage of current iPad sales for new iPad sales during these times is blasphemous!
I got an iPad Pro 11” M1, 512GB, WiFi + cellular for $799 a week ago. Brand new in the box from an authorized retailer for apple.
iPad hardware is miles ahead of its software and I don’t think it’s worth waiting a quarter to half a year for minor upgrades. Yes OLED is a minor upgrade because the screens already look gorgeous! The Magic Keyboard has shortcomings too, but it’s very nice and never gets old.
    My example:
$799 for the M2 model would have gotten me 128GB, WiFi Only. To get the config I got in M2 would have been $1299. I also got my Magic Keyboard for $199 instead of $299.

A friend of mine use to work for a major computer company, he designed the hardware for these computers. I remember when me and my friends were all oohs and awws about their latest and greatest computer. He just laughed at us and told us, “Not to burst your bubbles, but we’re already working on the replacements replacement. Look if you need a new machine, (computer) by the most recent biggest, fastest, one with the most RAM, Memory, storage you can buy. Because odds are pretty good you’ll never upgrade it, and will use it until it’s a paperweight. There will always be something bigger and better than the one you just bought, don’t worry about it, just get what you can afford that meets your needs.” It was true 40 years ago when he said it, and it’s still true today.

I expect them to release only an iPad Mini 7 (with a better cam, A16 chip & 6GB of ram), iPad 11 or SE (with laminated display, 2nd pencil support and A15 chip), iPad Air 6 (with 3rd pencil support and M2 chip) in October. March 2024 will bring the iPad Pro (with AOD standby, better cam and M3 chip), iPad Pro+ (with AOD standby, better cam and M3 chip), iPad Ultra (with 14.5 inch AOD standby and M3 chip). Probably all of them will also switch the camera location to the landscape orientation and should finally have a longer battery life up to 14h.
We have to take under consideration that Apple doesn't like major redesigns and prefers the easy tweaks of obvious elements. But in 2024 I would like to see the iPad Pro with 11.7” inch display for $799, iPad Pro+ with 13” inch display for $999, iPad Ultra with 14.5 inch display for $1199 and later a refreshed iPad Air 7 with 11” inch 120Hz display and 128GB base storage for $599. This would make sense, hopefully 2025 will bring some additional features e.g. IP68 water resistance, MagSafe wireless charging instead of just another faster chip.
For everyone that wants just a tablet device $400-600 is the sweet spot (customer can later add a keyboard and use it as a lightweight netbook). Pro models priced at $700-1200 have to be capable of replacing a modern notebook because that's the catagory they're competing in (still portable but more powerful).

I just ordered an 11 inch pro 4th gen WiFi + cellular for $720 through t-mobile, wasn’t that much of a price difference over the 64gb air. I have an iPhone 15 pro so I didn’t want any iPad with less than 120hz or the M2, it was the best option for me considering the $300 price difference between the 11 and 12.9 inch pro models. I currently don’t have an iPad or Mac at all, so I’m looking forward to receiving my 11 inch pro🙂

I highly doubt the prices will be $1500 and $1800 for OLED iPad Pros starting out. A fully specced out Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is $1619. If Apple wants to stay competitive, they need to keep the price reasonable. Like $999 and $1299 starting with 256GB of storage, like they will be doing with the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max this year. I mean, if OLED does come to the iPad Pro, I will upgrade due to that alone. Ever since I went from my iPhone XR to my iPhone 13 Pro Max, I can not really go back to LCD.

Honestly, OLED is fun to have on phones, but if I can tolerate it on the phone, I'd hate pixel burnout on the bigger screen, and with UI for drawing and designing it would most likely be horrible... Esepcially considering you want the device to run for a bunch of years, and dont plan on buying Apple care and stuff.. I was kinda worried about colors maybe being not that amazing on my m2 12.9, as this is my first iPad, but they are REALLY nice and true to how they really are 😊

I have a third Gen iPad Air and a 10th gen iPad as well as an older iPad 8 that is going to be recycled next year I am sending my first gen iPad to be recycled as well. The iPad Pro is not a feasible upgrade considering I expect to be moving to a purely content consumption and not looking ot do productive work with it. I have finalized my laptop purchases unless the MacBook Air has double the battery life half the price and a mini-LED screen! I am recycling my older desktops and laptops to a social enterprise that specializes in refurbishing and redistributing technology to low-income and other social enterprise customers.

I would bet one of two updates would happen not both. 1) general trickle down chip update across the product line with aesthetic hardware updates or 2) OLED screen introduction to larger Apple products. One thing is for sure it will not be both 1 and 2. The reason being it would be a huge supply chain Apple would need to get a handle on, which they have not been able to. Apple definitely has a strong handle on the chip supply chain. This most likely happened when Steve and Tim had to make a decision ways back when the first iPhone came out, chip or screen. Committing to control the chip side was definitely the right choice since LG and Samsung were in huge race to top the screen market at the time. And because of that decision Tim made back then (of course Tim was master of supply chain) is probably one of the biggest reason he became CEO and the success of Apple to now...yes 98% of Apple's success to date pretty much has nothing to with the 'aesthetic hardware' the iPhones pretty much sold themselves. But the absolute strong hold Apple has built on the supply of the chip for their toys. Anyways majority of people can tolerate and accept the current state of Apple displays. Literally their highest end screens are good enough for them serious professionals at the highest level. But one thing they would not tolerate would be piss poor under performing chips in their systems. Apple screens were always good enough but what really made apple was their chips. The old horse and carriage metaphor best describes it best. The chip is the absolute horse that pulls the carriage, the rest is just on the carriage enjoying the ride.

At the price point of $1,800 (for only the iPad), it doesn't really make sense why would anyone buy it. You will need to spend another $500 for an Apple pen and keyboard. For that price, you can buy a MacBook Air 15-inch with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD Storage and you would still have $400 to spend on other stuff. Honestly, it doesn't make sense to buy such an over priced machine when for that money you can a great laptop.

Honestly it depends what you use your iPad for. I upgraded my ipad and decided to go back to a mini 5. I regretted upgrading honestly.
The mini 5 has what I need and I like the form factor.
Considering the ipad 6 is supported on ipad os 17 & the 7.
The 8, mini 5 & pros for A12 models. Should be safe till 2025.
Until Ipad OS is better & the ipads are worth there price who cares.
If your paying $1500 for an ipad thats just stupid.
Honestly just get a MacBook at that point.
    Its way more capable.
Its to hard to justify the price of an M ipad without folders or a desktop. Especially when you need the smart keyboards and a pencil for an extra $350.
The ipad 9 is on sale for $259 alot pick up while you can.
