I just purchased a 12.9” iPad Pro with M2 and I plan to enjoy it for several years. There is always something better coming, and the iPad you described was supposedly planned for 2022. If the OLED iPad is that great, I’ll wait until it hits the Apple Refurbished Store in 2025 and enjoy my M2 iPad Pro until then. Performance on the iPad Pro isn’t even being utilized, so I’m skeptical a bunch of pro apps will come for M3.

I don’t think the re-design was every going to happen in 2022. Apple only re-designs one iPad at a time: first the Pro, then the Air, then the mini, and then the base iPad. 2018 was the start of the cycle with the 2022 base iPad completing the cycle. 2024 was always the intended time for the re-designed iPad Pro since it’s the start of a new re-design cycle. The iPhone 15 re-design will point the way, probably.

I bought an M2 ipad pro 12,9 in January. And I had a problem with charging and battery. But after a long time, the tablet indexed the workspace and applications. Also, after the last update of the system, the charge began to keep very confident and stable. I can work on a tablet during a full working day. At the same time, giving children to play games and draw using Apple Pencil. The picture, the software, the screen - it's all at the highest level. However, I purchased a very massive case to protect the edges and the whole case. It began to weigh even heavier than my old laptop. But I'm not complaining. The main thing is protection. The system also works smoothly and stably. I don't use new features. There is enough base .

Hardware aside, that 10.5 iPad still up to the day I traded it in, performed absolutely fine for everything I needed. In fact I also have an older 12.5 pro 1st gen that I got for free semi-permanent mounted for a singular purpose and it's performance is also just fine. This new one is just so far off the scale for iPadOS apps, I just can't understand why in the near term I would need anything more. There will always be something newer and better around the corner - why not wait for the M5? I mean I am sure there are rumors if you set it down in the kitchen it will fix you lunch :)

Yeah, but the OLED screen will be another concern for long term usage of the iPad + an increased risk of the device becoming yet another "subscription" (hardware that deprecates faster and requires replacement sooner rather than later). In a world of $1000+ phones, and "software as a service", the more durable and less risky hardware is, the better.
I simply do not share this "OMG!!!" optimism for the the upcoming OLED iPad, and do in fact consider the current 11 or 12.9 inch to be much safer purchases for long term reliability.

As someone who "only" has the M1 iPad Air (with the Magic Keyboard and gen 2 Pencil) I can't see upgrading it to the Pro or M2 versions any time soon. I can use Lightroom on it as well as I can on my Windows i7 laptop with 16 gb ram. Honestly these are all overkill for me. I actually prefer to use my iPad Mini for just about everything else. But I'm probably not the target market for this. I would actually buy the iPad Mini in the M2 or M3 chip if it had 5g cellular as well.
And to be honest I like Mac OS on a laptop better than iOS on a powerful tablet (M1-2-3) with a keyboard. I currently use Windows only because of legacy design software that is just now becoming available for Mac OS. I will be switching to a MacBook next upgrade cycle. I would love it if Apple would make a convertible laptop/tablet like Microsoft did, but with the ability to switch between Mac OS and iOS, or run them in parallel on the same device. With or without a physical keyboard. That would be awesome 👍

I have to disagree in a lot of points.
Apple will never bring MagSafe to an iPad because it does not make sense. The IPad is way heavier than an iPhone. It would need super strong magnets that also affect other aspects in using the iPad like ferromagnetic debris built up which is not the Apple way. But more so because people will think they can use the iPad with all other MagSafe gadgets. Like car mounts and so on. But no magnet would be strong enough to guarantee a stable connection. It would lead to a lot of damaged devices because of user error which Apple tries to avoid with all their products.
Also the Oled will not be as energy efficient as the mini led display. By combining 2 layers you will never double brightness because the first layer is not fully transparent.
The thing that M Chip iPads need is support for desktop Mac apps. And when the update drops for the M3 iPad you can be sure it also drops for the others.
Stick with your iPads. This video was garbage.

It’s soooooo fast. The thing that isn’t ready is devices capable of using it. It gets old watch Apple hold it hostage from "Pro” models of anything. Pro should include the cutting edge when Apple has nothing to do with design or implementation of the tech other than including the radio in their "Pro” devices.

I bought an iPad Pro 12.9” in 2017 and it still does almost everything the new ones do. It is still upgradable to the latest iOS although it doesn’t have all the features but I’m OK with that because it’s still very fast! Even though I have the Apple Pencil one it works just as well as the Apple Pencil two (minus the double tap feature). I also bought a MacBook M1 Air in 2020 and it is fabulous so no need to update that one either. So, full disclosure, I am using an iPhone 7 and it still works perfectly fine. However, I almost bought the iPhone 14 except that I really wanted USB-C just so I am going to wait for the iPhone 15! I usually just buy what I need at the time and not regret my purchases afterwards there’s always going to be a bigger, better faster, stronger products, no matter what you buy. So get what you want when you want it and enjoy your purchase. Once I buy something, I really don’t much read reviews unless I’m thinking about future purchases, which is the case here! If the M3, iPad Pro has more features that I’m looking for I most likely will buy it. I have purchased many Apple products over the years and they just don’t seem to go bad. Thank you for the review!

I don’t think the mag charging is beneficial on the iPad at all. Most people put their iPad into a Magic Keyboard, or some other folio. So you have to remove the iPad from the folio and then put it on top of a disk that is held by a cord. The literal only difference is that you just place it on top of the disc rather than place the little cord into the connector on a typical charging port. I think people get way too excited about odd technologies that really don’t make much of a difference at all. Especially considering that USB-C charging is a lot faster and can be done anywhere whereas with a mag safe disk, you have to have a flat surface to set it on. 🤦🏻‍♂️

But isn't OLED worse than mini-LED? The last thing I want on an iPad is a burn in. I think it would be better if they were able to make even smaller LEDs for darker blacks if necessary. I feel they are developing this currently but will introduce it later on, maybe in 2027. So while an OLED iPad is tempting especially for movie-watching, I would rather have an XDR display that can handle the high levels of brightness.

    • @AverageAspie
      @AverageAspie Год назад

Agreed. I use mine for sidecar/universal control so its gonna be on static stuff alot. I don't want to lower brightness/go dark mode to prolong the life of an OLED panel. Also, the possibility/rumors of them narrowing the bezels for a camera notch would be a downgrade too, as somebody who moved from tab s8 ultra to Ipad pro 12.9 M2. I think the only way I'd upgrade is if narrow bezzels w/no notch, and have a new apple pencil that would ONLY work with the M3 model, scummy but I would not be surprised .

This iPad isn’t a bad upgrade for me. I’m still using my iPad Pro 9.7”. This is a huge update! All my drawing apps just got updated and I can’t access anything. I’ll need to upgrade soon.
Honestly, what do you want to happen. Apple is making products for people that need a new version of the product they currently have or are new to the line. This way they have the best of the best. I’m glad I never got the 2018, 2020, or even the 2021 iPad Pro 12.9. Now is the best time for me to upgrade. I’m not going to wait for the next iPad. I’m going to be using it for drawing and video editing. I’m planning on shooting a feature film this summer and will be shooting on my iPhone 14 pro and editing on a maxed out 12.9 Pro with Resolve.
When and if they come out with that future iPad I’ll worry about it.
I’m writing this as I watch the video. This guy is going off with features that aren’t built into the next iPad. I could care less about about a redesign, what is inside. There is no way Apple will ship an iPad that goes above 10 hours, they’ll shrink that battery if the chip is more efficient. When my phone is charging I use my iPad and vise versa. I’m not going to buy a keyboard case place my iPad in it, close it, then MagSafe charge my iPhone and wait. The hell. That way I have separate chargers. There aren’t enough people that travel that would require such a thing. Regardless of what Apple preaches about inclusion, they still and always will design the majority. They’ll make gimmicks here and there for the minority of people. App,e once made a touch screen iMac G3 for the disabled. 20 years later they add mouse support in the disability settings on an iPad so those same people can use the iPad. Right there it shows you gimmicks. They only released it as a main feature because of the negative press. The iPad will always be simple and touch based. That’s why there are no accessories in the box, plus they can make more money from them.
Everyone knows negative videos make for more views.
    Rant over.

I went from the Pro 9.7” 256gb (cellular) to the 11” Pro M2 with 2TB storage (cellular). Honestly, it was the perfect time to upgrade. It does everything I could ask of it with no hesitation.
Some extra thoughts: What made my upgrade happen now and not waiting… My Aviation app (Garmin Pilot) was still running fine but it was loading slower and slower on the 9.7 Pro… Getting into video editing, the M2 flies in Davinci Resolve. I have GoPro’s and an iPhone 14 Pro Max 1TB for shooting videos.
One thing that I recommend is buying the most internal storage for anything mobile… iPhone, iPad, MacBook… but on desktops, max out the specs but not the storage, because it’s easier in a non mobile situation like a desktop to add high capacity thunderbolt SSD’s or a DAS, where as to drag them around is a bit more inconvenient in mobile situations.

Actually, per this video, WiFi 6e it is not necessarily changing bands to the 5 GHz band from the 6 GHz band when the STA is operating far from the AP ( how did you verify this band change?) but the constellation size will decrease (say from 4096 QAM to 64 QAM) which will result in lower throughout. This is called rate adaptation.

This is so true. I have two devices in my house that have WiFi 6e. I do have a 6e router. Only one of the devices can reliably get on the 6GHz band and that’s my Mac mini, which is perhaps 5 feet away. My Samsung phone, even at 5 feet away, still stays on the 5GHz band. I verify the band by checking the router’s table of attached devices. It’ll show which access point it’s using and what band.
