I think people often forget that and just remember Justin's silly outfits, campy falsetto singing and the sometimes silly lyrics. For all that, they were still (and are) a kick-ass rock band.
Hi. Nice. Watching now. Could we have a "Matt & Rabea by Not Busting the Bank" - where you have to replicate your current rig as cheaply as possible? Or, maybe better, where you replicate each others? Thanks.
That sounds amazing. The Darkness should be the biggest rock band in the world. Their recent output is just as quality as they’ve ever released. Such a consistent display of balls out rock, musicianship and songwriting.
Overrated! Possible even more overrated than the White Stripes and Muse! It’s not surprising that mainstream rock started dying shortly after they came out!
Had such a massive smile throughout on this one. The Darkness don’t get enough credit for inspiring guitar players early 2000’s. I’d like to see Killswitch Engage next 🤘 Awesome series guys, your uploads make my day!
I've seen the Darkness 5 times and the tone is always fantastic. Deafeningly loud, but also crystal clear. Side note, I think Justin was using a Dual Rectifier at the time of Permission to Land. Fairly certain when I saw them in 2015 it was Marshall and Wizard. In 2018 I think it was Marshall for both guys. Think, as Matt said, they have been adding Friedman to the mix lately.
Ahhh the White LP Custom- Justin, Jonesy, James Dean Bradfield and probably Jesus even... Therefore Sound Like ( early) Manic Street Preachers - in particular, Motorcycle Emptiness, what a mind blowing tone!
It blew my mind but apparently he played Motorcycle Emptiness on Richie's thinline tele. There's a video on YT with him discussing the song and playing it on the tele. Agree tho, the White Les Paul he plays is a monster, Holy Bible sound as well..
@@valemale78 Yeh anno... seen the vid. what I meant was that his white Lp was his trademark... and I want to see it recreated by the lads up above, by any means necessary... oooh with a squire strat ana Joyo 5 watt errrm stack? !- that's the real fun!
Thank you. Love sounds like, love the Darkness but more than anything I love the sound of a Gibson into Marshall. There is nothing in tonal heaven quite like it.
Until you hear a Fender into a Marshall or a PRS into a Mesa! PRS and Mesa is a match made in heaven. You can literally take any PRS off the shelf, plug it into a Rectifier or Mark V and it’s always perfect!
The darkness without busting was good but this was just on another level! Really enjoyed this episode and have replayed it more times than I could remember lol...A great Gibson LP thru a cranked up Marshall is still one of the best sound 😍😍😍😍😍😍
I really dig The Darkness. None of my friends like them at all. I don’t think they ever got their due here in the states. The gear today sounds so fantastic. Might have to rewatch this video. 👍
From the US and freaking love the darkness! So happy you guys are giving them a by busting the bank video and so happy I got to see them live in the states.
agreed! defo the best sound like of 2020, hopefully the next one is gonna be a without busting cos I've yet to see more bands they've not done yet and also more rig building videos so I can write fitting song titles for the excerpts they make up
Just a thought could the Andertons guitar sound like do a cross-over with the drums dep and do a whole band soundalike? I reckon that would be mad. It could give much more context to the riffs and you can hear how close everything is to the actual song. Anyway love your work guys
Great sounds like, I was smileing & laughing when you were playing at the pure enjoyment of that classic Les Paul & Marshall sound & watching the enjoyment on your faces. Thank you for an entertaining video :)
Great video, as ever... And I totally agree about the scratchplates on Les Pauls! I've worked with The Darkness many times. They are some of the nicest guys in rock n' roll. Great fun to watch too.
The problem spending that much on one guitar is that you probably wouldn’t get the use out of it in fear of it getting damaged or stolen... nice to own but it deserves to be played...
I think that lead tone/ rhythm tone on permission to land etc is one of the most beautiful lead tones ever heard especially the chunky thick rhythm part on love is only a feeling
Love Permission to Land, but you guys are seriously missing out if you haven't listened to any of their new material since their reformation! Last of Our Kind (the album), to me, is their best release!!!
Great video. This is nostalgic for me also. The Darkness played Guilfest before they got fairly big and I recall Justin melting my face off with his LP Goldtop when I was 15. Awesome.
10:24 as Phil Burnell once said when trying out the Wendy's Chicken Pup Sandwich "Oh my goodness, this is spectacular!" great sound like guys, very close to Justin and Dan's tones
I think not having a custom (or at least not taking a guitar with the 498T in the bridge) makes a huge difference here. That pickup has a very different character to my ear and feels very different to play than say burstbuckers, custombuckers, etc.
Yeah Rabea, because visually “understated” is exactly what you’re looking for when thinking of the Darkness! 😛 Admittedly it is a “sound like” video. Surprised at Anderton’s not having any Les Paul Customs in stock though. 🤔
Been waiting for this for a long time! Well done lads it was pretty close! Saw The Darkness on tour recently and it’s cool to see how their lineup has changed. Dan has lots of pedals now and Justin uses Hiwatt. They’ve started using strats and teles!
Gretsch G6120 Fender Hotrod Deluxe Keeley drive/boost pedal strymon flint strymon el capistan that's for a by busting, a cheaper sound like would be a G5420, Blues Jr, Boost pedal, cheaper reverb and delay
I love the Darkness, I think them and the Donnas were the coolest bands of the 2000s. Sounds great, I know Dan plays the 1987xl plexi, but the sound is perfect. Nailed it!
Love these sound like vids guys, thanks so much for doing them. Even if I may not necessarily want to sound like whichever artist you're emulating, it is still very useful in terms of equipment. I learn a lot about all types of equipment I may not be familiar with or may not have ever used or heard before. Amps, pedals, guitars etc. So even if you don't want to sound like a particular artist, you still learn something! I'd like to make a sound like request.. Tony Rombola/Godsmack. Apologies if you've done this one already, but I didn't see one. Thanks!
Ah man, the darkness were a huge influence on my playing as well growing up through the guitar players of the early 00's. Glad "black shuck" got picked. That's a great song.
Very enjoyable this one, seeing all them Marshall's in all their splendor.... Please could you's have a go at RHCP or The Cult or Killing Joke...? Muchas Gracious....
They've done a Sound Like Frusciante both Without and By Busting, but it would've been cool to have done one for Josh's tones when he was in the band (and also include a rig for Flea)
Absolutely terrific guys! Suggested future episode - Peter Buck / REM please across a full spectrum of eras: jangly early stuff & heavier 90s material.
Ahhh this was awesome. The sound, spot on. The playing, inspiring. Best 'Sounds Like' yet. I doubt enough people would even know who they are, but could you please do a "Sound Like Chevelle' (Pete Loeffler) video?
Whenever I go back and listen to Permission To Land, I can’t get over how much that album is just pure face melting rock
I think people often forget that and just remember Justin's silly outfits, campy falsetto singing and the sometimes silly lyrics. For all that, they were still (and are) a kick-ass rock band.
Definitely, the tones Dan and Justin get are just freaking incredible
Have you listened to Easter is Cancelled? It's a brilliant album.
adiohead I haven’t, I need to catch up on their more recent stuff
Yes bruv.

That’d be interesting, I’m actually wondering what Matt himself uses
@Conor Winston Matt also plays Chapmans? Cool
That sounds amazing.

Exactly what I was about to post. Mesa Boogie for Justin during PTL live era. That gainy crunchy lead was awesome
@Noble Failures if not then it was during recording. But I swear dual rectifiers were on stage
Yeah, I think he had burgundy ostrich skin cabs or something insane. Oh Justin
Find any live video from the golden era of the band - Justin has a dual rectifier. Lazy research by the Andertons guys.
Justin has gone back to Mesa for live sound lately.
Pretty sure the PTL album is all Marshall though, but I may be wrong.
Watching Rabea plays Justin's solos only confirm how great guitarist Justin is
Sound like Prince and The Revolution 😎
Great Job Guys!
They'd have to get Pete in for this
Yes!! I've been asking for this as long as they've been doing this show
Definitely, I always thought Prince was underrated as a guitarist so I’d love to see the guys take him on

We need new episodes!
Les Paul + Marshall 🤤
Oh my God this sound is just awesome !!!
i look forward to rabea’s video showing off that les paul that he definitely wasn’t going to buy

One of the best live rock sounds I’ve ever heard was The Darkness’ first stadium tour when Permission to Land went to the stratosphere.
Muse, then the Darkness!? You guys are just going through my playlist for the last two months.
I like when Matt softly said 'OK' when Bea refused to buying the LP.... It's OK Bea, you can refuse all you want, you are head-over-heels in love.
Secretly Bea is like Mike Myers in Wayne's World - "It will be mine...oh yes, it will be mine..."
That was phenomenal! I especially enjoyed the back and forth cut to each of you during "get your hands off my woman", that was cool as hell.

This is easily one of the best sounding episodes you guys have ever done. Just glorious tones.
Never heard of The Darkness. Checked it out on Spotify. You guys nailed it!
Best Sound Like I've heard ... classic rock tones
I really dig The Darkness. None of my friends like them at all. I don’t think they ever got their due here in the states. The gear today sounds so fantastic. Might have to rewatch this video. 👍
Kolchak357 despite this video they don’t really get their due in the UK here either, when it’s stuff outside of Permission To Land
You guys absolutely nailed the playing this time, you can see how much you enjoyed this one!
All of this is just ... spot on! Kudos to Bea and Matt 👏
I dream since I was a child to have that tone
Absolutely fantastic playing and sound. Just heavenly tones.
Quality tones, quality playing, quality bros, quality riffs!
But when we going to get Jeff Buckley or Prince!?
This might be the closest you guys have ever gotten on a Sounds Like video. It was incredible guys. Love those tones
It's not that hard to sound like a band who has no unique signature tone.
In my opinion this is one of your best guitar tones so far.

Led Zeppelin would be great for that! They have iconic guitar, drum, and bass tones. Bonus points of they can get Pete to sound like Robert Plant
Those two guitars sound WICKED together! Great job Bea and Matt!
Well that sounded incredible. Great playing guys. Really well done.
The playing here is amazing guys. Great job
Best ever “sound like”.
I listened to The Darkness all the time back in the day, you’ve both NAILED the guitar sound!
