I work in the industry they do not use that kind of mold release anymore You do not need to wash your model kits they use air and cooling techniques to release the molds
Hot tip
Thx for the tip
I just bought a kit from 2010. I was wondering if I need to wash it with soap water?
@@chriskim3541 I don't think so it's not going to hurt anything
I never wash kits. I am a full time model builder I have never had any problems at all they stop using oils a long time ago early 90s
A note on the fine tip markers that you say permanently stain the parts: Wear a cotton jewelers/modelers glove, make the line, then start rubbing it with your thumb. It'll stay in the recess/panel line, but will fade out on the rest, giving a nice smooth weathered look. They basically panel line and ad a slight shading effect when used properly. But they do dry fairly quick, so start rubbing it off about 5 seconds after applying.
finally someone did a proper tutorial on the gundam markers, thanks citrus such a helpful source for gunpla builders!
AimPlot I subbed
Metal Red is also useful for HG Unicorn Destroy Mode. He has some parts that should be clear red, but are not (for example on the back, under the backpack). Painting them with this marker gives a satisfying result.
I've found that gundam detail markers can be cleaned up by using a regular rubber pink eraser
Does it have to be pink?
Idk what he's talking about about mine cleans with alcohol just fine
thanks for making this video, just starting to get into the fun hobby of building Gundam model kits and this will be useful down the road for sure
Really enjoyed this tutorial, and I think I will might give the marker method a try very soon. Definitely going to check out your other vids now! Thank you bunches!
Glad this helped! I'll be doing the Gundam Marker airbrush review too, as soon as that comes around.
This is the one video that I have been trying to look for for years but could never find lmao
thank you so much for the guide
Very helpful. I needed to know what the markers looked like and how they performed before I bought them. Thanks!
Gundam marker sets are actually cheaper on Amazon compared to the yen retail. (At least in the USA)
for those small gundam markers that were blue, try using a pencil eraser it works really well.
Idk why he said alcohol doesn't work that's all I use and it takes the excess of just fine for me
I'm planning on getting a 1/144 HGUC GM with a Fluorescent Pink Marker to paint the beam part of the beam saber and at a later date. Getting both SD Cross Silhouette Mazingers with a black Gundam marker or what you said a Real Touch marker in Gray 3 to paint the mouth grille holes.
For the Zeon markers, those shades of red and green are very very very specifically Zaku II colors, the Char "reds" and the standard greens. It's why they're both A) the backbone of the Zeon paints and B) really not applicable outside of their bubble if you're not actively choosing those custom colors.
Helpful info presented in an easy to follow manner - thanks
This is some good painting tips.
This is a gold mine, thanks for sharing. Subscribed!
Very interesting and cool video tutorial mate and definitely can be helpful for my gundams and is washing the mold plates before putting the parts together is a optional or a main thing to do first if I ask when you paint them mate 😄😎👍
Thanks! I was panel lining a YMS Act zaku, and didn't know how to activate the
Paint in the marker :D
Thank you. I'm new at using gundam markers.
I'm soooooo glad you mentioned that the liner makers were different. I bought some liner markers for a kit I was about to build, thinking they were the same as regular markers. Thanks for saying they were hard to wash away before I made a big mistake!
Benjamin Lewis wipe as you go. If it dries use rubbing alcohol a cue tip blot it well on a towel.
I've tried them. If I accidentally go outside the lines, a simple pencileraser will wipe it away fine.
This dude doing something wrong because alcohol takes the excess off just fine even on straight white parts
Very helpful indeed. I have a metallic set and I've been wanting to paint certain parts without having the silver show up when its dry.
Same here, but I ordered a single metallic marker but it doesn't work and the color ain't green.
Idk why but the rustoleum 2x cover seems to dry alot faster than the old matte clear cans from the same company. It dries as fast as my lacquer clears and I'm wondering if it is actually lacquer
For cleaning...
Does the type or kind of dish soap matter? Any better than others?
I've been trying to use a grey gundam marker for panel lining and it's been an absolutely miserable experience so far. After thorough cleaning, the marker ink just pools on top of the plastic and never really binds to it.
Interesting that you use Rust-Oleum clear coat. Most people find it to be too viscous. Personally ive never tried it on a model kit but it works great for props.
Loved the tutorial citrus. So if I used the metallic marker set on a figure is it best to not touch the area at all ?
Hi, Does Real Touch Marker work for metal surface, such as stainless steel surface? Thank you
Did you put alcohol on the toothpick before scraping away, and did you let the paint set before going back in with the toothpick?
is it good when it has dried i mean does it still leave a lil bit paint on our hand when we accidentally touch the painted part later?
You don’t need to wash kits unless they are very old kits. The release chemicals now days have no impact on paints.
Kevin Webster I wonder how they do it. Model companies like GW don’t have nearly as good of chemicals, and even though the plastics are different they can’t be THAT different.
How old is too old for a kit?
@@rcola6235 Probably one that isn't HG, RG, MG, PG, MS, or one of the others created in these times.
It's not a matter of age, it's how the kit is stored. Plastic can sweat over time. It'll show up as a thin, white residue on the surface. Washing that off is not a bad idea.
Hi. I have a Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex. I want to paint the claws, feet and tail with gundam markers, and use Tamiya panel liner. Do I have to use lacquer before and after doing that? Help me please, I'm new and a little confused.
So when do you use the Spray and Denatured? Never used them before nor heard of them. I still don't have a clear understanding
You can also use those toothpicks as brushes to get into those really hard to reach spots which are in a tight fitting gap.
i never knew about the chemicals ;-; I have been building without cleaning lol
Bandai kits are pretty good in that regard, you can easily get away with not cleaning your kit. I don't clean mine either and never had an issue with paint not sticking
You only might need to clean if you have an old kit. Release chemicals they use now days have no impact on paints.
You might want to clean them before painting if you have been handling the pieces with bare hands; Wash off the oils and dirt. Ultimately, though, it's probably not that big of a deal unless you're doing a professional job (e.g. getting paid for it).
There is no need to wash your model kits that is a thing of the past many years ago
This was very helpful boi.
Excellent tutorials! Subbed.
Can i use gundam marker without top coat? Any alternative way to remove the gundam marker?
I just bought the gm metallic silver and I used it fine at first, but after a while not using I find it kinda stuck and the ink would barely come out at all ... The other GMs are fine, only this one stucks. What should I do with this? Thanks
Can I use a blue meta gundam marker on barbatos lupus' chest armor? Would it look good?
Yea, I hear to wash parts a lot but have never washed my parts and have had no problems arise from any sort of release agent or paint adhesion whatsoever
Really depends on the specific copy of each kit. Most I've seen are clean enough, but some aren't.
I used the red for the shin and head lines on the Moon gundam and the green for the lines on the side of his head
Hey. Do you have any tips to paint red on a black part using gundam marker?
How do u store the gundam marker prevent them from dry out or something
Bc my gold marker turn into brown after a month….
Proper. Great work
I have to ask: how about white and yellow gundam markers? They seem to way thicker than the other markers and don't work as well as the others.
How would I then panel line though? Can I panel line on top of dried gundam marker using the fine tip gundam markers and the tamiya accent color or would I need to put down a coating first and then panel line top of that, then finally apply the finally coating?
You can use Real Touch pen on top of Gundam Marker, but how well the ink will clean up depends on the smoothness of the painted finish.
the panel lining pens work really well for me, just use an eraser to clean up the lines in the perpendicular direction, gives really clean and sharp lines
Alcohol works as well at least isopropyl does
Tooth pick works for panel lines as well
My gunmetal, metallic green, metallic red, and red markers haven't been working properly the metallic ones the green seperates from the silver same with gunmetal, and metallic red, but my red one uts just a liquid its not a paint at all its kinda hard to describe but its definitely not paint any tips and help for these problems?
Also could you do an video on gundam marker erasers, and an another on how to paint clear parts
Jetfire48 You'll need to shake your markers more. I don't think the ink inside "goes bad," so it'll just take some time. As for the Gundam Marker Eraser, I tried using it before, but it doesn't seem to work very well. I can't get enough control with them to be satisfied.
I don't think this was talked about, can you over-shake gundam markers? like if you shake for say... 3 minutes, will it ruin the paint?
The panel lining pen seems to work fine with me coz I can wipe it clean even with just my fingers
Me too
Same. I just use a touch of thinner and a Sponge brush or qtip to wipe away any access.
I get a dab of hand sanitizer on my finger and and rub away and excess. It works just fine.
Ditto, I'm not too sure what Citrus was on about when he said he's struggled with it before... I've used liners on 6 different kits and never had much trouble
You can also use a regular white eraser and it does the same trick.
What does fluorescent gundam marker work
I found out the Gundam panel line markers can be easily clean up with any rubber eraser, very beginner friendly.
Does it necessarily have to be that kind of alcohol?
after painted with gundam marker, can I use the pour type gundam panel liner on top of painted gundam markers?
Should be okay, but I haven't tried it before.
so can you do without the clear coat spray paint or is it a must? Also I've never heard about washing the parts before... glad I watched this first before I started doing stuff with my kits.
Washing isn't essential, but it doesn't hurt. Some of my older kits have a white haze over the plastic, and a bit of soap takes it right off. Clear coat is also optional, but the UV protection alone is worth it to prevent fading.
Completely unrelated,
But for unpainted beam sabers,
Theres a paint i got at Michael’s for like $3 (CAD)
Its a bright, metallic pink with a golden sheen that reflects light really well. When the light shines off it, the pink turns into a sparkling gold (not glittery though because that looks cheap)
The brand is FolkArt, the colour specifically is called (5246CA) Orchid Flash.
Like i said, i paid $3 for it, and i was impressed with the colour and the way the light hits in.
I'll keep an eye for it. Thanks for the tip!
Have you tried using a pencil eraser when it comes to the Gundam lining markers?
I hear it cleans the ink up really well.
Haven't had much luck with them.
When does that clear go on? Before or after? Some people I run into do it first. I’m a little confused by this. I thought it was a finisher or to protect the paint you just laid. Which do you do?
Top coat is almost always applied After you're done customizing your kit. An exception to this gloss coat, which can be used before the kit is "finished", as a way to create more surface area for decals to grip on (especially waterslides). Keep in mind that another layer of topcoat should still be applied afterwards though.
Can u remove the marker on top without alcohol?
are the gold/silver pens u mentioned at about 6:40 a good alternative to painting the actual piston insides? is it ok to use markers on weapons too?
thanks so much for this vid!
jan kristian mari Dia Yes to all of your questions. Pistons will look great because they're small, but weapon will need extra care to minimize pen mark.
Can i use an Eraser to clean Pour Type gundam markers?
Can I clean the paint brushes in the alcohol ?
You can clean the markers using lighter fluid or spirits.
umm, hi everyone who is using gundam markers i just have a few question...
is it not good to remove the tips completely? i know its a dumb question but i want to clean it cause i accidentally stroke it in a not well dry color,
i bought 2 gundam markers, both are perfectly working months ago, and then when im about to use them again, i just push them once and they start pouring so much...
i need help anyone
I'm using the top coat you recommend, but the finish is frosty and un even. Am I applying to much or too little?
Probably a combination of uneven spray, paint not mixed well enough, and excessive humidity.
The paints in my metallic markers always get dried up when not used for a few months, any way to fix it?
I think u just gotta shake em once every while to mix the chemicals a little.
Newbie question - I've noticed the Zaku eye stickers look kinda dull...could you use the red metallic pen to colour the sticker? Would it look good or would it just not be feasible? I'm about to buy my first Zaku and h eye is the only thing I don't really like about it.
If you do, for a good trick with most of the monoeye kits is that you can actually use the sticker sheet as a stencil to get the eye the correct size and a better circle than you'd otherwise be able to do
Thank you very much for the toothpick scraping tip. :)
Can you clean paint brushes in the alcohol ?
I just finished weathering my kit with weathering markers. Should I apply top coat on it now?
Yes, unless you plan to do any additional weathering, lining, decals, etc.
Noob question: How do you make the marker ink permanent on the plastic? The first time I used tends to erase easily.
topcoat
You think I could use the pink real touch marker on the zeon set to paint the mono eye on a zaku?
Yes, probably will look good.
Do you need to use a primer?
Use 90-100% isopropyl alcohol for the panel line pens clean up. Won't be upset
My friend bought a gundam marker set and it started eating away at the plastic of the figure he was customizing. Does anyone know why that happened?
Probably used Pour Type markers on bare plastic
Hey im late but if i topcoat my kit, can i still play with it? yes... play with it not just simply posing
You can, just that you want to make sure to apply a thin layer of topcoat
Thank you for the video. I have been thinking about picking these markers up but I read online that they can damage the plastic. Have you ever heard of experienced this yourself? Thank you in advance for your reply.
You're thinking about the Pour Type Gundam marker, which is not what these are. Normal Gundam markers don't damage plastic.
Citrus Ah ok I will.pick a few up today then. I have also heard that Tamiya panelliner can also make Gunpla plastic brittle and break. Any opinions here?
That's correct. The ink is super thin and the solvent will break down bare polystyrene, so you shouldn't use it without a lacquer clear coat underneath.
Can I use semi gloss or gloss top coat to hide the imperfections of Gundam markers?
+Kevin McCallister Probably not as well as with matte coat.
Ummm my panel lining Gundam markers come off just fine with alcohol i use isopropyl though not denatured
Alcohol is alcohol. It doesn't make much difference.
Hey citrus you know the little rattleing thing inside the marker? I think mine is stuck how do i fix it?
Cap the marker, lay it flat for a while, and shake it again.
Am I the only one who just wanna build a kit but doesn’t give a shit about the whole details lmfao I just wanna build
Psychopath
Simple
Then this videos isn't for you. That's okay man, you do you.
Yeah, your the only one
Then one day. Simple gun man turn to cool gun man
Is 1 gundam marker enough for a 1/144 scale kit?
Depends on what you're trying to do. Just detailing, a marker will last you tens of kits.
Do you always paint on the runners? Or do you sometimes paint them after you build them?
Sometimes. It's usually easier to paint small pieces on their runners.
What top coat would you recommend putting over the gundam markers? I've heard some people say that Mr Top Coat is the best to use, but others say it makes the paint run.
GSI topcoats are amazing, but also expensive. Honestly any brand available at your local hardware store will work fine, so long as you're not too picky about the fineness of the finish.
How would these go for cockpit deatils like buttons and switches? Do you have better control than you have with a normal brush and paint?
They're pretty good, as long as the detail is raised. Recessed detail is harder to paint with these pens because their points are very big.
Citrus Ok, looks like I will have to give them a go. Iwas thinking for raised suttons and switches on cockpit consoles. Really only need a few colours Red, Yellow, Blue and White.
I was wondering do I have to primer the pieces or can I just use gundam markers for panel lining and just some detail work I’m just beginning to and great channel btw citrus👍🏽
Primer isn't necessary if you only plan on doing light detailing. Enjoy the process and thank you for your support!
Citrus thank you for the info should I still wash the kit in warm water and dish soap?
Yes. Again, not strictly necessary, but washing will definitely help paint stick.
Citrus ok great and will do that again thanks for the info 👍🏽
6:07 Is that a metallic gunmetal gray in all of those basic sets?
Yes.
Is the smaller marker that comes in the set a panel liner?
It's similar to the the fine tip end of a Real Touch marker. You can use it for lining, but color isn't very dark.
Not sure how that rustoleum spray is working for you. Stripped the metallic paint off a couple pieces I tried it out on
Been fine for me. I bought my current can fairly recently too.
hey citrus, do you use GM 001 or real touch for hg panel line?
Real Touch all the time.
How about isopropyl alcohol?
Can i use markers to paint the gundam eyes?
+huy Hoàng Yes.
Is the top coat for after or before the painting?? :o
Topcoat after
thankyou was worried they are super permanent.
Is there any reason why you color on the runners as opposed to cutting first and then applying the color?
Rob Wilson Painting on the runner saves me from losing pieces before I assemble lol
Can you also paint them still in the runner with spray or airbrush before assembling?
Yes, but you shouldn't.
so are the markers lacquer based or acrylic? great video btw
Thanks! They're acrylic.
The metallic marker for gold are really bad,
The gold are like dark yellow and doesn't shine, the rest are quite fine tho
TY. I was planning using that to paint RG unicorn's horn. So I guess normal yellow is better?
How many times or how long do you have to shake the marker to properly agitate it by the way?
+thattonefellaguy Depends on the color and how long it's been sitting. Sometimes a few seconds, sometimes several minutes.
Gotcha, thanks man!
Can I use it on moderiod model?
Of course
