As another RUclipsr pointed out, this was 1937 and many Americans had been through WWI and the Great Depression. Americans needed a message of hope and a reminder to stay positive and carry on despite hardships. Snow White embodied this resilience. It is a truly beautiful story if you take the time to watch and appreciate it. Snow White's strength is underappreciated. Thanks for this video, Amala.

The ironic thing is, is that Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora’s songs are about what “they wish/dream”. While the princesses starting with Ariel are about what “they want”.
The main reason this works is because in the 80s we as a society had more freedom to be asking ourselves what WE WANTED, but not so much as in the time with a Princess like Snow White.

The reason Snow White is performing household chores for the seven dwarves is because she has no money to pay rent, and this is her way to do her part and contribute. Well you also need to remember that the majority of women during that time were housewives and did that for a living. I mean just RUclips 1950s housewives, and that’s the 1950s! Not 1937. So it’s not like Disney was purposely disrespecting women. He just had her know what women knew how to do then. Now things have changed but that’s the problem with changing it to fit todays time because then it loses its value of a “classic” because like she said it’s no longer a fairytale because now all Disney does is just try to push there opinion and agenda.

It won't be long before Disney makes it excessively difficult for consumers to find and watch original versions of old Disney cartoons or films. They'll claim they're a private company, that they can do what they want including editing out or sealing away any of their content deemed offensive by the ever-changing, always-irrational woke police. They'll buy up as many old, original copies as they can find to make the availability of original Disney films that much slimmer & far, far more expensive. Beyond what any average consumer can/would spend.
For instance, I can already imagine the cartoon movie Aristocats eventually being heavily edited if not totally panned for continued sales by Disney because of the countless things woke people would find6 to whine about regarding a children's cartoon movie about talking kittens.
Like the Siamese cat playing the piano with chopsticks, or the fact that the female kitten is excessively girly and loves to copy her cat mom's femininity including wearing a pink bow... or the fact that Duchess the main cat is a single mother relying on a man foe guidance - O'Malley the Alley Cat. We also can't forget the awful rich lady who owns them. I mean, she's awful because she MUST be rich from reaping the rewards of white colonialism!!!
It's all ridiculous of course lol, but I'm pretty sure that's how these weirdos see things as sweet and fun as Aristocats. They turn everything into something twisted and dark.

Another beautiful thing about Snow White in the original film is that despite the shocker of a day she’d just had running through the forest she is deeply moved by the thought that the dwarves may be seven little children with no mother, so she cleans their house to surprise them. She’s always thinking of others. And despite the horrible situation she’s in she remains kind and optimistic, and quietly holds tight to her dream.

Nothing will ever surpass the beauty of the animation of all these old Disney (and not only) animation films. Because they weren't made by computers, but with human hands, and heart and soul. I'm not kidding, everytime I watch scenes from Snow White (and all the rest), even for a few seconds, my heart flourishes with pure innocent feelings.
I can't remember which was the last animated film I saw that made me feel a sample of these emotions. Even the good ones, they lack in comparison. I think the magic started to fade away around the early 2000s. After that, everything became CGI (with a few exceptions), and no matter how good they were, they just don't have what Amala describes in 5:58. Making you smile, because you feel happy watching them. No woke agenda, no macho female heroes, no feminism, no patriarchy, nothing, just simple, innocent stories. I'm 100% sure that everyone who watched the film when it was released, the kids, the parents, everyone, were coming out of the theaters with a smile on their faces, having escaped to something magical for about 1,5 hours. Snow White was the ultimate badass, she just showed it with her actions and not with her words. A survivor of childhood abuse. A survivor of an assassination attempt. Swallowed all of that and literally ran into an unknown forest to save herself and build her life up from scratch after being traumatized for years. Ran her own household as a teenager, became the leader of her household as a teenager, and never gave up on believing that she deserved love and care regardless of how people treated her in the past. Her only "sin" - not telling everyone how strong she is and how much of an independent woman she is (although she certainly showed it). Above all, Snow White was a tale about resilience for me and never giving up on the life you desire regardless of your current circumstances. She saved her own life multiple times before being saved by any man.

I am European, and I studied anthropology. In anthropology, we take fairy tales very seriously because they are remnants of old myths and religions from specific cultures. Anyway, Snow White is a unique character that has existed with different names and backgrounds, possibly since ancient Greece. The most well-known version is the Grimm Brothers' German version, but as mentioned earlier, we find variations of the tale in Italy, France, and other regions.
The original Grimm's version of Snow White was written during the 1800s, in the Victorian era. This was a time of particular austerity, where society considered sexuality to be the pinnacle of evil. Both women and men were expected to maintain chastity to appear more "noble" in the eyes of society. An interesting detail is that Snow White was 13 to 15 years old in the story, essentially a child. Like any child, she was vulnerable to a world of violence, symbolized by the hunter, the forest, and the evil queen. These elements were metaphorically used by our European ancestors to caution young girls to stay away from troubles. The adversaries in Snow White metaphorically represented a way for families to teach their daughters to avoid wars, politics, and violent individuals, much like the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood represented a pervert or sexual deviant.
The dwarves symbolized the common people, the workers-individuals like farmers and laborers who formed the backbone of villages and European society during that era. The fairy tale's message is simple: "Dear daughter, I understand you may not like this village of fishermen (or miners, or farmers) with their ignorance and lack of education. However, these people provide you with protection and sustenance daily; repay them with hospitality."
The blue prince merely symbolizes love; his character lacks substantial dialogue and importance compared to Snow White and the dwarves. Throughout the tale, there is no subjugation of women or hidden message advocating female subservience to men. It's worth noting that Snow White, the "innocent" character, makes the difficult decision to escape her home and live in a dark forest with strangers. Yet, her kindness, politeness, and manners endear her to the beasts and the rough dwarves, who come to love her deeply.
Regarding the issue of skin color, races, and similar matters, let me share my general perspective, not just about Snow White. This fairy tale was conceived at a time when Europe was inhabited predominantly by Europeans, primarily white people. This contrasts with today's diverse ethnicities and backgrounds. Given its historical context, I believe it's appropriate for the characters to reflect the time and place of their origin.
I don't view this stance as racist. It's akin to making a movie about Anansi the spider, an African folk figure, with a white character, or depicting African princesses in the 1400s wearing traditional clothing but interpreted by white people. Such portrayals would indeed seem ridiculous and insensitive. Therefore, my question is: If Disney and others who advocate for social justice wish to elevate American minorities, why not create movies based on the fairy tales from their own countries? Why must European culture constantly be altered in the name of integration? I am open to welcoming individuals from all corners of the world into European culture, but altering my heritage and history under the guise of political correctness or American issues makes me feel threatened, humiliated, and apprehensive about the fate of my culture. Misrepresenting the past can lead to dire consequences, as demonstrated by the lies propagated by the Nazis regarding a supposed Aryan master race. Frankly, I've reached my limit with these instances originating from America that seem to disparage European culture.

There's also an alchemist symbolism :
The fairy tale of Snow White invites us to take the path of inner transformation - the way of the tenacious alchemist who in his solitary laboratory tries to transform lead into gold. It’s a metaphor for the process of spiritual growth during which the earthly within the person is transformed into the divine. In its description of Snow White, the story subtly refers to the tradition of alchemy: a complexion white as snow, lips red as blood and hair black as ebony wood.
Nigredo (black), albedo (white) and rubedo (red) are the three phases of the alchemic process. Nigredo, the first phase, occurs when the world has lost its shine and a process of deconstruction of the “old person” begins. In the story of Snow White this phase is imaged by the fearful wandering of the girl in the dark forest, searching for a new house. Albedo is the phase of purification. This process is symbolized by Snow White’s cleaning of the house of the seven dwarfs (chakras), when they are in the mountains looking for gold. In the final phase, rubedo, the merger of opposites transpires, which in the story is depicted by the marriage of Snow White and the prince.

Being hardworking, kind and dreaming of finding true love isn’t a bad thing and I’m so tired of modern media making every woman a “strong independent woman”. The original Snow White was absolutely a strong and independent woman, she survived attempted murder, made friends with dwarves and took care of them to show appreciation for them helping her. She was thoughtful, kind and strong, never losing her compassion despite the cruelty of the world around her.

What's even more upsetting is that disney was/is fortunate enough to make a movie based on a story from an underrepresented culture (and have succeeded in doing so multiple times) and make both the story and the culture popular. Unfortunately, they chose to take the lazy route and a lot of people are cheering them for it as if it's the 1960s when seeing a non-white lead was revolutionary and groundbreaking. Ultimately, Disney is going out of their way to make excuses for their laziness by calling everyone a bigot while secretly believing that the groups they claim to represent do not deserve their own stories.
My bestie is a Latina and she was quite pissed when she found out about the casting and basically asked to make new stories instead.
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Snow White (though I do respect it as a piece of art), but I'm just as "triggered" by people who say she's not empowering or strong. Like, mate, she's in her early teens, sheltered by her only living parental figure and said parental figure treats her like an indentured servant in her own palace and wants to kill her out of vanity. That's definitely not something most 13-14 year olds will be able to brush off easily without being shocked and breaking down at one point (like she did in the forest).

Yeah. I don't usually get involved in public discussions about this topic, because I don't want to get the 'your're white, you don't get it' treatment. But I've been scratching my head and wondering about this, too. Other cultures have such amazing stories and myths of their own. Why do they keep remaking the same old European culture based stories over and over again, just with sometimes...odd...casting choices, rather then presenting us with completely new and exciting material? Where having a diverse or *gasp* even mostly POC cast would actually make sense. I mean, for heaven's sake. It's 2023. It's not like people wouldn't watch that. And we would not all have to suffer through these endless discussions.
I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but sometimes I'm inclined to believe, some evil cabal is actually actively trying to occupy us as much as possible with stuff regarding race and trans issues and stuff like that, to distract us from the really pressing problems.

In "Enchanted", starring Amy Adams as Giselle, Disney made an original movie paying homage to 1937's "Snow White". "Enchanted" affirms "Snow White" instead of destroying it. "Enchanted", a modern retelling of the 1937 classic, upholds its morals/beauty. Enchanted appears to turn Snow White/Prince Charming on its head yet reasserts it. We think Prince Edward is Prince Charming because he appears to be yet his kiss can't revive Giselle. Why? He's not Giselle's Prince Charming, Robert is. (Robert, a truly good man, transforms into a Prince Charming; he's dressed like a prince at the costume ball). "Enchanted" is saying Prince Edward's kiss couldn't revive Giselle because She Didn't Love Him. Giselle is revived by her Prince Charming, Robert. In 1937's "Snow White" the reason Prince Charming's kiss revived Snow White was because She Was Already In Love With Him! In 2007 "Enchanted" understood that in our modern world people are cynical about everything, most of all about love, yet it implored people to embrace the message of 1937's "Snow White'" that love is real, and not to give into cynicism. Fairy tales like "Snow White" matter more than ever today, yet in 2024 Rachel Zegler (and Disney) aren't empowering women, they’re trashing "Snow White" and gaslighting us into believing that love between a woman and man, even in a dream, is impossible. They're cynics devoid of love.
In "Enchanted" Nancy (Idina Menzel) has waited years for romance/love, but she hasn't found it. Before meeting Giselle Robert can't express love; he's damaged. When Prince Edward says: "This is Giselle, the love of my life, my heart's true desire", Nancy almost falls over. Nancy: "Wow!" Edward: "Is something wrong?" Nancy: "Oh, just the way you said that, so straightforward, not a hint of irony, it's very...romantic." Nancy, a successful businesswoman, wants this! Rachel Zegler says strong women don't want love; Nancy already told us: That's A Lie! Strong women want a man like Edward. Nancy has no idea Edward is a real Prince; they’re at a costume ball; she's reacting to a man, Edward, who speaks in a way she's always dreamed of a man speaking to her. Prince Edward is Nancy's Prince Charming, so while Giselle stays in our world with Robert, it is Nancy who goes with Prince Edward to the kingdom of Andalasia, marries him, and becomes the queen. (Prince Edward possesses true courage, and he's incredibly kind and selfless, which is why as Nancy sits alone on the floor of the ballroom it is Edward who comes up to her, kneels down, and says: "Why so sad beautiful lady?", he then puts the shoe on Nancy's foot and says "it's a perfect fit", (it is), and that's because Nancy and Edward are a perfect fit. So, Enchanted doesn't just pay homage to "Snow White", it also pays homage to "Cinderella" and "Sleeping Beauty").

The message of the original Snow White is, IMO, a timeless one - it's all about the importance of found family. Snow White probably lived a life of luxury in the castle but she was lonely because her own family that was supposed to care for her instead wanted to harm her. The dwarves took her in and cared for her, and to show her appreciation she willingly and voluntarily chose to make the house into a home by cooking and cleaning, but the dwarves showed a lot of gratitude toward her and never looked down on her or expected her to take on a more traditional role in the house. She also demonstrated a lot of inner strength in leaving her luxurious life and adapting to a more modest lifestyle in the cottage. I think a lot of modern adaptations do women a disservice by sending the message that the only way to be strong and successful is to take on traditionally masculine roles - some women want to kick ass and that's great too, but it's not the only way to be strong, and a lot of modern female archetypes turn women into cardboard cutouts with no faults or fears, which is just boring to watch. I hope we can see more balanced and nuanced female (and male) characters in movies and TV in the future.

I think everyone just forgets how much Snow White does for herself in the movie, remember that she was the one who stroke a deal with the dwarves so she could stay at their house, she smartly leveraged her skills in order to find a living; Snow White is not only sweet and caring, but she's HARD WORKING, she has important abilities that she can capitalize on, she's resourceful and she has a commanding presence that wins over both the animals in the forest and the dwarves and she does it by being feminine and lovingly stern, not aggresive or domineering.

That shows disrespect for the young man in the role and also for Disney. No one knows for sure whether she was an actual person, but there are stories and songs written about her. In the folklore, she was a young girl, who posed as a boy and took her father's place in the Chinese Army, because her father was too old to fight. NOT ONLY THAT, but Snow White was a princess and she was able to cook and clean, she was proactive and knew what needed to be done. She was practical and kind. There were really good values in that movie. She didn't want anyone to wait on her hand and foot because she was a princess, but she was independent and had life skills. Cooking, kindness, friendship, cleaning are not weak, they are important life skills. If she hadn't been kind and looked after the dwarves, befriending them and the animals, do you think they would come rallying to save her? They saved her because they loved her.

The legends the tales recount are dark because they were cautionary tales to discourage people from dangerous areas (like the old sprawling forests and caves) and encourage them to be very aware and careful around them. So yes, the tales were dark, because they weren't just entertainment.

I even cried a little at the end when the prince takes her to his castle. This narrative that she was a servant for 7 men is so skewed. The dwarfs adored her and treated her with respect she hadn’t gotten before! She changed them for the better and they were so devastated by her death that they couldn’t even bring themselves to bury her. Their lives stopped so they could stand constant vigil over her. 1. What are my thoughts on the original Snow White? It's a timeless story with breathtaking animation, gorgeous singing, and memorable characters. Snow White herself is a great role-model for girls because she picks herself up after she's been banished from her home and threatened with death. Yeah, she cooks and cleans, so what? No matter what time period, all of us, men AND women, have to be able to cook and clean to take care of ourselves. Plus, she isn't afraid to cry or be scared, unlike modern-day "girlboss" characters. She is much more relatable, realistic, and human than most new characters today.
    2. What are my thoughts on the remake? It's gonna suck. You know it, I know it, we all know it. Turning Snow White into a "girlboss," removing the seven dwarves, race-swapping Snow White, not having the prince kiss her, and so on. There's no point in ranting about this, we know it's gonna bomb and Disney isn't going to learn from their mistakes.
    3. What do I think about modern movies? Puss in Boots: the Last Wish is one of the greatest movies to come out in recent years. Why is that? Because it does everything a memorable, classic movie should do: it has an original idea and story, uses classic characters without messing up their personalities, it doesn't have any political agendas, and it doesn't force inclusion down our throats. You know, what most movies don't do these days, especially Disney movies. I hope this trend of taking beloved characters and trying to "update" them for literally no reason ends soon. It would be nice to see new characters and original ideas that stem from a creative mind and not a woke checklist.

Here's a take: by making every film about the heroines being girl bosses, you deprive boys of the lesson that you should be strong and stand up for something, like the girl that you love.
While it is okay for girls to be their own bosses, not every girl can stand up for herself. And maybe not all want to. You make them feel inadequate.
While boys should not be taught to automatically assume a woman is in need of saving, it is a good thing to teach them that it is a good thing to stand up for someone else.
This does not apply strictly to Snow White, but it does apply generally to a lot of changes in the narratives we see.
I love a good story in which a girl can stand up for herself (Brave is one example - but as we all probably know, Pixar has always been way better with these things than Disney). But that does not mean we should change every story in which a man does something and deprive men of any value.

We had to watch every Disney animated film from 1937-2000 (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - The Emperor's New Groove).
For the technology of the time, it was astonishing - up there with Star Wars, or Jurassic Park. That sounds hilarious when written down, but making an hour long animated short feature was by no means no easy feat. One could argue it's MORE difficult to craft an animated film of this detail today than 80 off years ago. It took years! It's a film that's reflective of its time - some of the greatest creative minds of 1937 romantically envisioning a history of the centuries previous.

These writers nowadays, however, seem to think that the only way to show a woman's strength is to have her do something stereotypically male and do it better, like it's a contest. It's not just Disney either, most children's tv shows now have no plot, they get pulled into societal agendas forcing kids to learn things they don't understand. When I was younger, my tv shows were all about creativity, adventure, fun, magic all things children should soak up to gain imagination. Yes we had powerful 'girl-bosses' from shows like Totally Spy, and Winx Club - but at the same time, when it came to Winx Club, the main 6 girls still needed that help from their teachers, friends, lovers, and sometimes even families. In shows now, there's nothing.

It's so heartbreaking to see the very first Disney princess being dragged through the mud. She not only ran away from a horrible living situation despite being nearly assassinated, being scared beyond her wits, so much so that she only sees evil creatures in the forest, but she befriends those very same creatures once she realizes they are normal animals. She also takes care of, not one, but SEVEN complete strangers! Cooking and cleaning, but all the while remaining optimistic and hopeful- which is the very definition of strength. On the topic of the prince: not only did Snow White sing a whole song about him, dream of finding love and a life with him, but she literally sent the Prince a kiss on the wings of a dove..... I think it's safe to say she consented to that kiss when she was unconscious 😅
I think what's wonderful about her is that she changes not only her own mind and perspective, but the minds and perspectives of the seven dwarves as well. So much so, that they charge into battle to save and defend her!
The original will always be the true masterpiece, just like all the other original animated Disney movies. It deserves way more love 💚

Let me tell you something. Snow White and the Seven Years is actually the German Fairytale for kids written by the Brothers Grimm 🇩🇪 back in the early 19th century.
Most likely is a Dark Story to begin with.
Mr Walt Disney changed it and made it in a good way.
Same for Peter Pan, in the original Story from the Book, He's the Bad Guy not Hook
The 1937, the Animation, that we all know of, will always be a Masterpiece and beloved by many generation. Including me

So she was like a strict, loving mother. I think that’s a fine character.

Even though her marriage never worked out she constantly reminded me that true love was something to dream about and happiness in a marriage was something good. I watched her provide for my sister and I all on her own and she still loved to sit down with us and watch these fantastical movies that bring you happiness. There’s nothing like that anymore. Now that I’m grown with my own children we also sit and watch classic Disney. My son loves when the prince saves the princess and they live happily ever after. My daughter still too young to appreciate the story telling but very happily sits through the films. These ‘out dated’ values of perseverance and kindness are something I want my kids to learn along with traditional love and partnership.

The original story of Snow White is taken from a 19th-century German fairy tale or folk tale, written by the Brothers Grimm. The German brothers known for their various folk tales and stories, published 'Grimm's Fairy Tales' in 1812, which features the tale of Snow White as story number 53.
She wasn't woken by a kiss from a prince. Her coffin was dropped and the bite of apple came out of her mouth.

      @neon2368 Год назад +6

@@danyelfBecause it's marketed and made as a direct remake of an existing adaptation of a story that has it's own design and identity. Disney's Snow White(1937) was not a remake of the Grimms Schneewittchen, but an adaptation of it. Even so, they were faithful to the descriptions written in the original tale, Snow White is still 'white as snow' and the dwarves are still dwarves.
If they want to change things, they should just do a different adaptation of the original entirely, like Snow White and the Huntsman with a different plotline, character design, and message.

    • @lelouchzero7
      @lelouchzero7 Год назад +3

@@danyelf the problem is that they not only change the story but the characters too. they should just create a new title if that's the case. • @cmm5542
      @cmm5542 Год назад +1

@@danyelfThis argument, which I hear ridiculously often, is invalid on three counts.
First, a short story and film are two different MEDIUMS. What works in print will not always work on screen. If you want to have both a print and film version of a story, they will of necessity have to be different - Agatha Christie stopped allowing other people to write stage versions of her work because they weren't altering them to where they would WORK on stage, but just slavishly copying the books. That doesn't work. But you don't need two books of the same book, or two films of the same film! And a second film doesn't need to alter what already works in the first film, because they're both films and the same things will work in ALL films.
Second, the Brothers Grimm original was basically a 'skeleton story' - based on oral tales undoubtedly embellished by each individual storyteller. But the Grimm version was intensely basic - no developed characterization, setting, or relationships. Just basic plot and theme. Disney fleshed it out into a proper three-dimensional classic work. If someone else wants to flesh out the original tale in a different way that is fine, but what is being adapted is the ORIGINAL TALE, NOT Disney which is a full story complete in itself and not needing to be 'fleshed out'!
Third and finally, Disney IMPROVED upon the original, which was dark, crude, and cruel beyond plot necessity. Why anyone would prefer the incomplete originals or desire and even 'darker' and unkind version with NO good message to give children, is beyond me. Making an imperfect tale BETTER is a good thing (Shakespeare did this A LOT); making it WORSE or just 'different' without improving it morally or artistically is not a good thing at all!
