I think it’s the double standard, absolutely if it were a traditional African or Indian story and we cast Emma Watson as the lead it would be whitewashing, racist, offensive. Does it matter? No! Absolutely not. Is it about her race? Not really, people get mad at these things because if the reverse would happen it would be a huge social cause and people would be boycotting the movie. Don’t get me wrong, there are racists, but to say it’s a racially diverse story is just a lie, it’s a German story with German origins. In terms of representation, wouldn’t it be more impactful to have a story from their perspective and from their country or story. The question is, why aren’t we telling black and brown stories and instead telling white stories with other faces?
