Hi Stephen & Yhana! George Newnes, a famous book publisher, also opened the nearby Lynton and Barnstaple Railway (now a heritage line) too, as well as this amazing cliff railway. He was born in Derbyshire, lived in London, was MP for Swansea, and died in Lynton at the comparatively young age of 59. Fantastic POV shots in this video. I've been on it a few times, but before I was doing YT. It never ceases to amaze me. Thanks you for reliving the experience! Take care, Paul.
Thank you Paul, and very cool about the information regarding George Newnes, he sounds as though he was an interesting guy with a very busy past. Have you mentioned him in any of your railway series videos? 😊 catch up soon buddy
It was great to ride this again with you. We also thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Lynton & Lynmouth, and the railway is the icing on the cake. Thanks for another great share, Sue.
Thank you Sue, it’s certainly a very lovely area and a beautiful drive to this coastal village too 😊 although a bit tight in places on the road down. Lol 😆 hope all well and catch up soon 😊❤️
That is a pretty awesome tram! Hope the cable doesn't break or that would be quick roller coaster without a happy ending. Yikes! Beautiful views over the bay. Awesome! Take care and have a great day.
Thank you Steve, I’m pleased it didn’t break too and start rolling back down. I wonder if that’s ever happened?! I can imagine it has on similar things 😊 happy adventures buddy and catch up soon
Fantastic Stephen, love this! Love the funicular 🚞 maybe we will release something similar to this in the not so distant future! Isn't the clifftop cafe lovley too, what a fab video! Thank you! Have a great week, Ceri and Kat ☕️ ❤️👍☕️ looking forward to seeing the Valley of the Rocks! 🪨
I thought the cliff top cafe was very lovely, we actually stopped for a light lunch here. The sausage roll was very nice lol 😆 I so wish we were here at the same time. That would have been very cool. I’m looking forward to your video on the area guys 😊 have a wonderful weekend and catch up soon 😊❤️
An exciting funicular ride and beautiful views from this wonderful cliff railway! Too, great top views of the sea and town. Thanks for sharing this with its history, Stephen!😊
We just love rail systems. What a great idea using water as a counter weight. Having to wait for the tanks to fill is a lot easier that walking up there. These rail ways always have such a great view when you reach the top.
This is so great an invention. It sure is very HIGH. And like you said, worth the view. I do know the experience although not as long or high ( Spa Belgium) so the ride was great to relive that feeling. Great share Stephen. 👍 🙋♀ 🇳🇿
Thank you Anita, it’s been a long time since I was in Belgium, I have a few cousins that live there actually, although I have never been to Spa. These cliff railways are always great fun to ride 😊😊 I’m pleased I didn’t have to walk up lol 😆 although, I did walk back down 😊
What a great funicular! It seems like a really long one, too. They are so handy for getting people up or down hills and this one had some great views. 😊
Thank you Donna, the views are very lovely at the top, Lynton and Lynmouth in general is a beautiful place to visit to be honest 😊 sending my best and catch up soon 😊
It was so interesting to see the funicular railway. It looked incredibly steep. The views were amazing, especially on such a beautiful summer's day. Thank you for a lovely video 😊😊
Thank you girls, there is so much to see and do in Lynton and Lynmouth, and it’s remarkable that this is one of the routes up to the town on top. Either that or a very steep walk lol. I feel sorry for the residents if it ever broke down. 😊
We enjoyed the ride, Stephen. Loved how they level themselves for passenger comfort and safety. Beautiful views from up top and lush greenery along the way. Stunning views. Thanks so much for bringing us along!
Wow, those prices! 😱 Lovely history though, love all the details and the bunting at the bottom! Love how these lifts always charge a bit more to ascend than they do to descend! If they understood the pain in my knees descending they would reverse the pricing scheme! Love the green and cream colour scheme, very old worldly classy! Very much like the one in Saltburn which still operates on water, this was great to see! 👍 Hope your having a great week!
Thank you guys, I guess it is expensive when you imagine that’s it’s a very short trip to the top. Must get expensive for locals. As this is the most convenient way up and down. This is the second cliff railway I have travelled on. Hastings has two of them. I have been on that one many times as it’s only a couple of hours drive from where I live. Sending my best guys and catch up soon 😊
@@StephenandYhana thank you so much! Yeah we complain when they charge £1.50 to go up or £1 to go down, most of the ones up here are motorised, there is only Saltburn and this one you showed that i know of that are water powered. Fascinating to watch 👍
Amazing Cable system. reminds me of how Cable Trams ran with an underground cable. The views from the top are amazing. To think that this system is run by water is amazing in itself. Have a great day Stephen. Great episode. 👍🏽🤗🙏🏽❤
Hi, Stephen and Yhana. Thank you for sharing. Wow..this railway is just straight up to the destination. OMG, I felt goosebumps on my arms as if I were on this cable car...4:21...I noticed you guys were watched from the PPL above the head on the bridge. It's unique to see the other side of the railway operation coming down the hill. ..5:00...it's very thoughtful that the cable car itself will maintain level against the sea-level. The one I was on at The Rock City(TN, US) was like the aircraft just elevating up in the air.😲 Some ladies hesitated to leave the cable car at the top BC they had a hard time climbing up to the exit door,..LOL What? Is somebody actually living just next to the railway?...5:32...I enjoy those rock walls with greenery on both sides. The view from the top is spectacular...the sea is welcoming you, all. Well done.🥰🥰🍁🍁🚣♀🚣♀ 4th👍👍a participation ribbon😥
There are houses all the way up that cliff, I saw one lady with a coffee and newspaper sitting on her balcony, just minding her own as the trains went past. Not sure if I would like that clatter all day outside my window. But a unique location for a home. I enjoyed this little journey. Sounds like the one you went on was pretty cool to ride lol 😆
Wow Stephen what a wonderful ride. I can imagine it must have been quite hard work building the railway on such a steep incline. Fun to see though, and the view at the top…BEAUTIFUL! 👍😊🇨🇦
I think I would have liked to have explored more about this too 😊😊 I can imagine the guys who run this know a lot about it. Sending our best buddy and catch up soon
Wow - what an exciting ride! There is something similar to this in Pittsburg PA - but not nearly as cool as your railway! We have been very much enjoying glimpses into these villages!
Thank you Karen and Shannon, North Devon certainly has lots to offer, there are stunning walks here too. If you decided on a holiday to England you would both love the West Country. 😊 catch up soon guys and happy adventures ❤️
I’m not a huge fan of railways either to be honest, but I’m right with you on this one 😊😊 it’s a great trip to the top and the views are amazing. Plus the coffee shop was nice at the top with great coffee waiting lol 😆❤️ a big thank you for the comment and catch up soon
That is really interesting. I did not know these could be powered by water, usually by electricity. Looks like a nice little town at the top of the hill as well.
Thank you buddy, these little villages the one at the top and one at the bottom are very separate places. They both have their own charm and uniqueness 😊 it was a stunning visit 😊
Well that was awesome Stephen! Awesome train ride up! Like the one we did in France! So did you walk down into the village and then the train back up? Funny watching from the bridges going up!
We started our trip from the bottom and then travelled up. There are beautiful walks at the top. Actually the whole area is fascinating 😊 very beautiful
The view! WOW the view! I am in complete awe! The beauty of this is indescribable! Lovely share!
Thank you, those views were stunning, it was a great place to sit with a coffee too 😊😊 beautiful place for sure 😊❤️

I don't know if we'd trust that rail system LoL Better then climbing I guess 😁😁
Lol, I can imagine it must have broken down several times over the last 100 years or so. It was certainly better then climbing though lol 😆
What a bargain for such an impressive ride and the view of the water from up top, incredible. ✨🚊
Thank you buddy, hope all well, happy adventures and catch up soon 😊
