  • Protected by cliffs in a valley where two rivers converge you will find the pretty Victorian seaside resort of Lynton and Lynmouth. Lynmouth is the quaint fishing harbour and Lynton is perched high above on the cliffs. They are linked by the famous Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway which the Victorians built in 1890. In our video today we'll take a stroll through the streets talk about some of its past and take a ride on the Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff railway. We share some of the stunning walks you can do in the area, including the Valley of the Rocks and Watersmeet. We'll chug along the coastline in a Victorian carriage on the Lynton & Barnstable Railway and check out another coastal resort Combe Martin.
All of this will give you great ideas of things to do in Lynton and Lynmouth, all reasons to stay and visit for more than a day.

Thank You Simon and Will!! In spite of being unable to afford to travel anywhere at this time, your videos are a great intro to each of the areas. Reading about it is NOT the same as actually watching to see what these areas look like and what a "fincula" actually is. In the US it's called something else that the coal miners used in Pittsburgh, PA and parts of West Virginia. But I can't remember what it's called because I don't live there. Last BUT NOT least, watching your videos are great for your mental health. Cheers and Hugs from NYC

These beautiful small villages that you are visiting are a step back in time. Away from the cities there seems to be a totally different feel where you can see that the communities care about their environment. The tidal distance between low and high is really amazing, you wouldn't want to fall asleep on the beach =-( . Thank you as always for my tiki tour to an English village. I always wonder whether my ancestors walked the footpaths that you show. Take care.

The west country remains Britain's best kept secret, but now and then a few of us Yanks find our way there and savor the experience. I enjoyed the best mutton sandwich of my life in Lynmouth. Absolutely wonderful! The fantastic views, and charming features of each town. That is some serious shingle! The water-powered funicular is so interesting, and I loved when the driver waved at you. The area does have an Alpine feel; I first rode a funicular up to the Fortress in Salzburg, Austria. For years I've heard about the ancient English practice of using small fields surrounded by hedgerows, especially on hillsides. So scenic, as well as providing an environment for birds and other wildlife. It made me think of that episode of the old series, To The Manor Born, where the new owner wanted to rip them out in favor of 'corporate' farming methods. Terrible! Where would the hedgehogs live? ;D Your videos are always a lovely treat! :)

Very enjoyable, Simon, what lovely weather. Must check out your Parracombe video as we lived on the moors nearly as a young 'un. Certainly looks all very spick & span - and isn't the Cliff Railway brilliant - why aren't there more of such perfectly formed modes of transport?! Happy travels, looking forward to Dunster, hope you made the castle it's worth a detour - mind you there's a lot to see in North Devon - quite a contrast to South (where the family are now based.) And I can't belive you saw so many goats - they must have more, I've never seen them!!

Sadly we didn't enter the castle as its owned by the National Trust and you need to jump through hoops to be allowed to film and show it on youtube.

Looks a lovely place to visit and so scenic. They must have a good council. A few miles down the coast, Combe Martin and Ilfracombe are falling to bits and couldn't hold a candle to Lynton & Lynmouth.

Thank you thank you thank you. This is, by far, one of the best travelogue style videos Ive seen for a long long time. It is well researched, well written, beautifully photographed, and is one of finest packages of its type.
I’ve just come across this video by chance and have liked and subscribed.
I have been to Lynton and Lynmouth on every visit we’ve made to Devon. We love the places.
If you are ever looking for any inspiration for more Devonian locations, My personal favourite location in North Devon is Bideford and especially Appledore. Centering on Irsha Street where most of the seaward cottages, now holiday lets, were independent boat/gig builders.
Still! Once again well done, on a most enjoyable and professionally produced video.

Thank you so much for the lovely comment. Very kind of you, and really keeps us going making new ones. Hope you enjoy some of our other videos we have quite a few for you to catch up on!
Great suggestions as well. I know Bideford and Appledore quite well the Instow Arms is a great place for a sunset drink! We have them on the list for a future visit.

@@MemorySeekers A little tip that might be of interest, if you go to Appledore in the summer season, the towns silver band hold free Monday evening concerts on the promenade, opposite the Seagate pub. They are very very good always well attended, and might just add something different to a video.
