  • Getting the main drive gear components assembled can be challenging. Here I demonstrate the method that worked best for me. It's a bit different than the published instructions, but I found it a lot easier.

I was literally starting assembly of my drive units when I got notification of this video! Unfortunately I don't have any motors at this point and my bearings for the center gear are due to arrive later this week. Thanks for the helpful demo that'll save me some time!
One thing to make it a bit easier is that you can drop the center gear into the opening for the motor then slide it over to where it's supposed to go, rather than pressing it in the way you showed.

How do you keep the gear straight on the motor

The stock printed motor gear has a D-shaped opening to match the D-shaped shaft of the motor. It was quite a tight fit, and with a tight set screw was held pretty firmly in place (don't use any loctite here - it will weaken and dissolve the plastic).
HOWEVER, since this video was made, there have been a few updates from other builders. In my "7 Essential Mods" video, I highlight the first drive gear improvement which adds a metal flange to a new printed gear. This significantly improves the ability of the gear to grip the shaft (you can safely use loctite on this one) and will definitely help with alignment. A second, more recent improvement replaces the metal flanges with sonic hubs. These also offer better "grippiness" over the metal flanges. I have the sonic hubs ready to go on my droid, but simply haven't installed them yet.
Both mods (plus one more that I highly recommend) can be found in the Baddeley OneDrive:

      Cheers and happy building!
