I believe that I can learn anything given the time and effort. This is why at age 56 why I have gone back to school. First to receive my GED and now my degrees.

Fixed mindsets are a survival method for people who's parents/guardians are quick to punish for even small things like mistakes and accidents or even punish when they fail the first time trying something. It's not a healthy mindset, but in those environments it's what's needed to avoid pain
And not just parents.... Society will often do the same.... Whether in corporate or military setting, where failure is often harshly punished, depending on those in charge....
Everyone feels the pressure created by our peers, I'd said that's a primary factor in our decision making mechanism. I accept that I maybe incorrect, but it does not matter how much money you have or awards you've won, but instead how you react to stress and dynamic situations. ((If one posses strong conflict resolution skills a controlled responsible decision and action will follow. One that both is fair and displays respect equally. )) If we trained ourselves on to improve mental health I'd have to say that controlling our reactions to disrespectful and aggressive behaviours is the key to our next form of evolution. This kind of entropy is constantly taking place and always has, we just forget sometimes.
You become what you think. If you think being laughed at is more significant your going to become the epitome of that very thought. Change your attitude on the situation and being laughed at can be insignificant, unimportant, remain unbothered.
For some, fear of being laughed at is a more significant reason. Just know the ones who laugh at you are also the ones threatened by your attempt and are just glad you didn’t succeed. Just makes eventually succeeding taste all the more better.

I used to have a fixed mindset when I was a kid. Later on I switched to more of a growth mindset but now I have fallen back into the fixed mindset again. This video made me aware of it so now I can cultivate the growth mindset again. Thanks :)
Yes, I did. I think we will always learn and adapt, consiously or unconsiously. Obstacles and conflict will force us to adapt and both of them are inevitable in life. Even if I would believe in a fixed mindset wouldn't make it so that I won't change. It's just that when I have a growth mindset I can choose where I focus my efforts to learn and adapt. I think that learning and adapting don't always result in growth though. You can learn new bad habits for example. So that's where my mindset is slightly different from the growth mindset.
I have spent my entire adult life (and sooo much time in therapy) getting over the fixed mindset I had growing up. My fixed mindset made me see my failures as failures of my whole self, success was because I had talent no one else had, and wrecked havoc on my self-esteem. Now, life is a learning opportunity and I work to live with a growth mindset everyday. It's hard but a change is possible!

I’m glad you got out of it. I hope I don’t grow up with a fixed mindset. I know my family means well by calling me I’m smart,etc. But it’s caused me to think the way you thought. And I’m aware of it, but I don’t know how to stop. It’s gotten so bad I cry when I don’t understand things on the spot and it’s really taking a toll. I’ll just give up. Also have the issue with fixed mindset in most things. I only aquired a growth mindset in programming thanks to a very good teacher but I have fixed mindset hammered into my head the whole childhood. First 22 years of my life were filled with pure hate and rejection. I was unwanted by everyone and my whole existence cause anxiety to some people in my school. Just existing alone was a crime and some wanted to see me dieing. Fixing traumatic experiences and rejection during childhood is almost impossible. I hate 99.99% of all humans and this probably will never change.
At 50 years old, I’ve spent the past few years teaching myself to transform my old fear-based fixed mindset into an optimistic, empowering growth mindset, because I believe it will help me reach the potential I feel within. So far, so good.

Yes, because the only constant in life is change! We constantly need to grow, otherwise we go nowhere. If a business has a fixed mindset, it will eventually die or go out of business.

I’m astonished that people feel positive about this particular explainer video, it’s so harmful and such a misrepresentation of growth mindset. My disabled daughter was shown this video at school and it left her in tears because the gist of the video is that kids who acknowledge barriers to learning or suffer with anxiety are bad and have the “wrong” mindset, when the reality of learning is far more nuanced. It brushes over the role adults have to play in creating safe environments where failure is allowed, putting all the emphasis on kids. It also draws a direct link between “wrong” mindset and unemployment without any reference to the role of trauma in how children respond to failure. It’s such a shame because growth mindset is a great tool, but this video is an aggressively ableist misrepresentation of the concept.
It is obvious that exceptions exist. He simplified it in this way so that people would understand that it is much better to have a growth mindset than a fixed mindset.
@@LapislazuliB612 But it seems simply untrue that anyone can learn anything, or that great people like Einstein only became great because of their mindset, and not because of inherently different abilities (not just IQ, but simply having a certain kind of brain). The ability for things such as planning, focused attention, and perseverance in the face of challenges are linked to physical areas in the brain (which in Einstein's case were larger than normal). Similarly, anyone can train their body and become toned and muscular, but you cannot change your basic body type.
@@snakedogman Einstein's brain was a bit different but not as much as people often say. However, let's not lose sight that the ideas described in this video are generalisations about the opposing ends of a continuum that we all inhabit. There will be exceptions, such as Einstein, but generally the vast majority of people either think they can grow to learn new skills or don't think they have it in them and thus don't really try. Some people will try in certain areas and not others (I have a brother who is good at languages, which many people consider hard, and so will approach learning a language like Anne, but is convinced he's terrible at DIY and inists he'll never be able to do it, so predictably won't try, like Jay).
Sprout's job is to make the concept come across as straightfowardly as possible. Your job is to make it trully useful by appling it reasonably in your life.
To me, a growth mindset was closely linked with learning to disregard others' opinions. I used to be so afraid of being unlikeable, unsuccessful that I avoided areas in which I wasn't sure I'd be talented. There were things I didn't try because "everyone" "knew" that they were hopeless or useless, and I was afraid of seeming arrogant by trying to prove them wrong. I had things I "knew" I was "good at"--mostly told to me by others--that I never even considered I might not be good at them, that I could improve at them, or that I might also be good or better at other things. Once I started seriously considering what *I* wanted and decided to seriously pursue it, I realized I was extremely capable in a variety of areas, and I could readily accomplish all my life goals. Once you convince yourself there is a way, the way becomes apparent.
@@wheatbread1606 I had things I wanted, I guess. As I became an adult and had more agency in my day to day life, I just gradually started trying. Success on the small scale encouraged me to keep trying for larger goals.

I have to admit( even though I know nobody may read this comment) this changed my life. I grew up in a household that always told me I'm special. It took great suffering and unlearning to develop this mindset. That too, at the age of 20. I'm 24 now. Life's going good. Gotta get better

Jay reminds me a lot of myself when I was studying. Though Anne also reminds me of myself at times too. It's true, Jay probably has anxiety causing him to have these feelings. But realizing this and questioning your negative thoughts is what is needed to break through and have a growth mindset. And anyone can do it! Thanks for the video

I feel that at some stages in my life I have had a fixed mindset. My mother always taught us that nothing beats a failure but a try. I have a growth mindset. I can take constructive criticism on an assignment. I love seeing others succeed and I am not insecure when they do succeed.
I like the growth mindset. It describes an open minded individual in which they are open for all suggestions that can help them grow. They are the person that has the opportunity to learn more and will be successful in the future.
If you're gonna say that having a growth mindset doesn't just see black and white but also gray then how is that not applied in between of having a growth mindset and fixed mindset.
You can have a growth mindset (skill comes through learning and practice) and still decide not to put in the effort. I'm never going to be a concert level pianist. I believe I could be, if I put in the time and effort. But I don't have the time and effort available for that when other things are more important to me. I'm not thinking that I can't do that, I'm thinking that I choose not to, and think about the things I've chosen instead. Which motivates me to get up and go work on those things now :)
It demands a culture. One Growth Mindset can be far more challenging among many Fixed Mindsets + the factor of authority to make changes. So to make it successful you have to first calculate the balance factor, get the rest of the team on the same page including sponsors and then go for it. Just on a practical note to turn a theory to applications.
From teaching for five decades, this makes perfect sense. Can someone make a permanent switch to growth mindset? Possibly, but only if they are aware of their mindset and practice overcoming fixed mindset. Changing mindset is also a skill that can be practiced.

I think the key to a growth mindset is actually setting a goal to aim for and in the process the path forward is revealed by your aim and you'll know how to improve yourself
I never really thought about it much until after watching this video to realize that I, myself for a long time was set on a fixed mindset not allowing room for growth. I too was afraid of failure but now knowing that failing is a part of learning, I am quiet confident in my new upcoming challenges.

I have done this; written over and thought and erased and torn off every idea, every thought that I tried to bring me closer to the reason why I have been failing in various aspects in my life..falling in deeper and deeper despite of all the wise and helpful exchange friends and family could offer in the world. It's a great distinction I use a lot myself. One of the things I've noticed though is people tend to think of Growth vs Fixed as a personality trait, but my experience is most people have a Growth mindset about some things and a fixed mindset about others.
I know this was probably meant for neurotypical people, but as someone with anxiety and is neurodivergent, this felt like a big ol' punch in the gut with something similar to the "If your depressed, just be happy" thing
That is exactly what I was thinking! Jay's 'fixed' mindset comes from perfectly understandable worries that anyone might have experienced. Like good for you Anne but damn video, you really didn't have to attack Jay for having realistic worries.
As someone who also struggles with self-doubt, anxiety and depression, I really don't think this video was trying to somehow belittle neurodivergent people. It's not "just think like that and everything will be better". Of course not. You can't just get rid of this kind of mindset in one day. I think I wouldn't be able to be who I am today without going to therapy for year and a half (still going). Failure is scary, but everything that matters is scary. You can't just get over your fears in one day, but it does help to try to overcome them (FOR ME, not giving any kind of advice). Having supportive friends helps a lot, and if, for example, your family is not, of course it's not that easy to overcome this. What I take from this video - getting better takes effort. Getting over panic attacks and terrible depressive states took so much effort but I'm better now. I have several workers at my job who I have to assess, give feedback and teach. I'm trying to be positive and supportive, try to give them positive feedback, and if they fail I'm spending a lot of time talking to them. It's so magical to see them getting more confidence, especially those people who have doubt in their minds. I really hate this "tough love' approach, where people say "you don't deserve praise, you have to work for it". That's bullshit. A person who is surrounded by supportive people will get better at everything because they are encouraged. I've seen with my own eyes. You can't just become happy and confident if people around belittle you. So what I'm trying to say is that this video is not saying "just be better". They even mentioned how the guy takes everything personally. It's not what it says. It says that there is hope and you can get happier and yeah, it takes time and effort, but it's possible. There is nothing wrong with being anxious or nervous or neurodivergent. It's normal and it doesn't make you a lesser person. What makes person shitty is when they judge people by traits like that instead of trying to help and support them.

Yeah my family was exactly the same, I remember I played football at 8 and wasnt very good at it, my grand father said I cannot learn it " you either gifted or you not", unfortunatly that stuck with me. I got diagnosed having aspergers which planted a seed of doubt in my mind very young which also moved my life in a hideous direction.
Thanks for this bigger picture perspective! I felt like I've struggled alone like a fish out of water with trying to build more constructive relationships with people like my coworkers and peers who don't seem to share in my levels of enthusiasm and ambitions for getting on the same page to get the job done with efficiency and consistency. I probably can write a book on coworkers shutting down and turning against me as if I am the one with a personal problem because I might have wanted them to help step up and tackle a project that can save all of us some trouble on down the road. Now I wish that videos like this would become more of a public service announcement on the biggest platforms you can imagine. Or at least mentioned openly at our daily goals meetings or our safety meetings at work that never covers any of the attitude and good sense techniques.

That's the thing. There is no scientifical term of "introvert-ness" or "extrovert-ness" . Almost allpeople are born with same body condition. The environment is responsible for our beliefs. However just think that, if they were in the same environment. Jay would fail and he would've stoped trying to opening up to poeple. On the other hand Anne would try again and try again. she would get confident more and more. So she'll be an extrovert. And about anxiety. Everyone has it. U just have to push harder, even the greatest leaders admit that they had anxiety issues but they've overcame it. For example Anthony Padilla he was so introverted that he had many anxiety attacks for just being around people. Now look at him , he's a famous RUclipsr and an extrovert. I'm not perfect also. But we all must push out limits and we'll succeed insha Allah 🌸

This is one of the channels that gave me the courage to start my RUclips channel 2 months ago about self development. Now I have 155 subs and almost 75 hours of watch time. I know it’s not comparable with others but I’m still proud I started because I’ve been learning so many lessons that I couldn’t have learned without getting started in the 1st place.
@@sprouts My channel has almost 200 subs and 84 hours of watch time although my next video completion progress has been pretty slow due to switching to another editing software and change of gears but no matter how slow it is to make videos, I do enjoy it. I know that my channel is way more low quality and not even close to other RUclipsrs' success out there but really, I realized that the main reason for doing this is not about the success but the inspiration I've been providing some people with my stories and experiences. Whoever you are, I don't know you personally but I can say based on what you said, I can say that you're one of the non-judgmental and open-minded people who is not fixated on tangible or external factors in order to learn from someone like me. Just because someone doesn't have a piece of paper as a credential, doesn't mean that person is not entitled to share personal experiences with the hope & intention to inspire others. Keep up with whatever it is that you're doing to improve mankind or improving your life even to a slight degree each day. This is just one part of a bigger puzzle for creating my RUclips channel about holistic health. I literally could have died back when I was 14 years old due to major depression but here I am right now replying to you, a RUclipsr, who's full of fulfillment and dedication to help others to be a better version of themselves. I think there's a little of both in me. Sometimes there is a challenge and I'm afraid I'm going to fail. If I fail I now know that I can do it again and do it right. I can try no matter what happens because I can redo it over and over. I play the guitar and when I get stuck I don't quit. I rethink it and try again. I do like to take the easy way sometimes, but sometimes I take the hard way too. -4th grade student
School has its ups and downs. There's benefit to the way it's done but it has some major drawbacks. I've found the best way to do it is to beat beating the system. What I mean by that is, people have to choose for themselves to figure out how to love learning. Really, you'll get out of it what you put into it. I've been using school to change my mindset recently; going through the motions not with the intent of the grade but with the intent of becoming better. The grade's important too though...
Perfectly happy with my fixed mindset :) I live for having fun, not to do some chores. I am not a product, I have nobody to sell myself to and I am comptent with my personnality so... No problems :). Glad with who I am, as I am, just enjoying my life as it is and myself as I am. I love to read with zen music in the background, petting my dog, solitude , tea, being in the nature and peace of mind. Why would my life be less valuable that challenger's lives ? Not everybody has to be ambitious and outgrow everything... Just chill The fear for me is not so much being laughed out. My biggest fear is to be overwhelmed : I like a quiet existence at a slow pace. I am woman of simple pleasures 😌

People often settle for things that they think will give them what they want, for example choosing a job or a field they don't like only for the salary package it offers or to follow your friends who have picked up a particular subject. This is what is happening nowadays with youngsters who aren't following what they like to do, the hidden passion that they love. The only way to switch to a growth mindset is to follow what you love doing irrespective of what the output is. Once you do what you like doing pretty well, you will achieve great heights automatically.
Karthikeyan Arul following your passion is biggest bullshit. You need to eat too. This mindset is good for kids, who don't have responsibility to look after. What you need is pragmatic passion. Be practical in following your passion. Know your limitations, and work around them.
I have picked up a lot of extra hours at work after people who had a passion for a new job, then didn't stick with it once it became difficult. Being willing to work toward something _even when it is unpleasant_ is an important predictor of success. You can choose to become very good at a specialty that is not your first passion, in order to have a good income and a lifestyle that allows you to keep doing the things you love regardless of whether they make money. Many artists and musicians don't want the stress of trying to make a living in entertainment. Many people in health care have other hobbies, or work primarily to support family; the work can be satisfying, but it is also difficult, boring, dangerous. If you "marry" your career for passion, but do you have a deep and faithful love to keep picking up the dirty socks long after the honeymoon is over? It is great to always be pursuing something that interests you. But this doesn't have to be your day job. Not everything that we passionately love can or should be used to make money.
@@EKWisner Hi, I wrote this comment a long time ago when I still believed in the meritocracy of our society. I have come to understand that our places of work are not healthy environments. We have political democracy but our workplaces are mini dictatorships where you don't get a say in what is made, how is it made and where is it made. Not only that we aren't paid the full value of our work and which is what constitutes profits (stolen labour) but that we have no say whatsoever in our places of work. This is a major contributor to understand what drives our passions. I think in a society where workers have complete control over their places of work (here work means both intellectual and manual labour, there is a technical difference but basically anyone who exchanges their time for money is a worker) will be able to not only pursue some passion that they like but create new avenues for themselves that are liberating and satisfying. Even a place where you flip burgers can be called home if you collectively own it and make decisions together. Does that make sense? I would also ask that why should you be paid less if you love doing your job? I think artists and musicians are tricky to understand but why should any other job we like be low paying?
I am living proof of past actions. ”Fixed thinking” sought out employed, and in my own situation of misfortune, I used hard challenges to feel ok making mistakes and that cultivated a (want to) come use my service. Throughout my life. And As I matured. I took opportunities to intern at multiple shops, to improve upon the technique for which I used in my own later successful business dealings. Out of unfixed thinking a rather complex ”mind over matter” way of thinking was revealed. This to customers made me a power plant genius. I was certainly one of my most challenging obstacles over the years and throughout the joyful rebuilds, and time. I'd taken an ever closer step and deserve or earned credit for my builds. This I was rightfully proud of and confidence boomed high as the heavens. Every customer repeatedly used my services solely based on the fact that I didn't rely on a fixed mindset to fail. Failure to assemble correctly, make costly mistakes than repeat my work several times. Was an example of my due diligence, eagerly wanting to seek to outsource to help me truly understand where my mistakes we're. And their solutions. No matter how many, big or small, expensive or not. Projects returned by my name. Trust He would. ”I always receive, (in the end) a place to leave more complex mechanisms” Knowing self-assured, that no matter how much learning it took ”me” he would be a good reference to the company not only professionally but in reference to my emotional and subjective attitude where there is no place for a fixed mindset. I di switch from fixed to growth thanks to covid-19. it was during those months of isolation and solitude that the lightbulb clicked over my head. and i am delighted to bravely say that i am on the right track despite moments of waning will and swaying for short-lived comforts. i discovered my grit, eventually.
You can go from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. For the past 10 years have been working on moving away from the fixed to the growth. Doing so has helped me with my anxiety and fear of failure. It is still a work in process but I will succeed.
maybe this is a bit premature- but this video really changed the dynamic of how i view problems and live my life. i had been trying to figure out for days what it was that was holding me back from really learning all the information i had to learn (in medical school and beyond) and it was exactly this- the fixed mindset. to view challenges as new opportunities to figure something out, and to accept failure as part of the process is key. i think that we get so afraid of failing and feeling inadequate that it prevents us from doing the hard (and usually more meaningful) things. this video really solidified the concept and it has made me excited- rather than nervous- for all the new things i have yet to learn. THANK YOU!
Ya know, just change your entire character, ya know that thing that neuroscience has proven to be formed during early childhood (from years 0-2) and to be unchanging throughout life, depending on the interaction between mother and baby (in the first two years of life), and you'll succeed! Rythmes are set firmly in early childhood, but they are not the be all and end all.Perception is set deep with in our physiology/psych , are far as I can tell all faculties in the mind can be tuned , adapted, strengthened, just as one is able to strengthen ones ligaments, bones,muscles,resistants to cold and heat, via the right amount of stimulus/stress and apropriate response. This is tied to a person's upbringing and the older you get the harder it is for someone to accept that what they know or have been doing all along was wrong and that can make anyone sad or look bad. If you choose to cast off the shackles of pride and shame and choose humility and enlightenment you can grow and benefit.
I think there are few differences between people like Jay and Anne. As being said, Anne has some sort of extraversion and Jay has some features in introversion. If you have some such distinguishable features like taking all what happnening around you seriously and criticize things where yoy think like realist, you can simply remained Fixed-Minded and it is the truth you will never heard. I'm this kind of person who are very sensitive to critics because I was ashamed of my work done in school and after. But after a year or so, I changed my place of living, accepted new rules of living in new country and realized that.. Yes, you can fail, but what's the matter of it? Everyone fail, everybody will fail on the first place in activities thet have never tried before. Just try and do. Do you enjoy? Yes, you do. Are you learning? Yes, you are! Nevertheless, there eventually will be a momentum where you were mentally placed in your "old coat" of your thoughts and you will be returned in the coat of old Yourself.
I had to be medicated to actualize the power of my mind. I was able to read, watch, and listen to lots of self help materials. I reached out to people in the related fields of interest as myself and seek for mentorship. I now mentor young men with drug abuse/alcohol abuse/ mental disorders. The joy i receive from mentoring those young men is like no other joy ive experienced in life. To the readers out there, i believe in you! YES you can do it! Failure is normal. Fear is normal. It takes time for change to happen. Anger and frustration is part of the journey to self improvement. Yes, it sounds silly. People have called me crazy, but i dont mind it. I rather be crazy and successful rather than being a contempt loser.

I agree. I think like most binaries, there's a little bit of both in most of us. I am dedicated to the idea of lifelong learning, but I still hate admitting when I don't know something or am out of practice. And while I believe that effort matters far more than talent, I also notice myself wanting to help people find their path to success based on relatively superficial things that could makes it "easier" for them - for example looking at people's body types when advising them on careers.
Well that was really interesting, and at the same time, simple, which is important in a good video About the topic This video, is not showing the complete idea. Basically when you are young this video is 100% useful, because explore is important, but once you find what you want, you use the fixed mindset even if you don't want. why? Because we don't have time for everything, which means, that you will avoid things that not really important in your situation or that simply you don't have enough time for it. So it is important to have a open growth mind set, but is important to be realistic, and CHOOSE what do you want to be good, practice makes perfect but practice needs time.
I believe that is possible to change mindset. For me it looks like the same as we were buiding new roads and started driving on them. And doing this would be pretty hard, especially at the beginning. But with time gets easier and there is a lot of joy then. And to be realistic, the fails also wait us on this way of learning of growth mindset, even in years, despite of being succesfull in that. So, as they said, just try again, fail again, fail better:)
I used to always believe I was a failure. I would try something new, fail and give up. About six years ago I took up fishing and guess what? My first year out I failed every single time I went. I was persistent however, stuck with it and refused to give up or in. Many a sunburned weeks later, I started hooking into fish. Fast forward six years, I am an excellent fisherwoman and proud to say at 35, Im attending college for the first time. I changed big time no more woe is me!

First, you must practice having a growth mindset to get through it. Then, draw things that are hard for you. After a long time of practicing and failing, you will be able to draw anything! :)
My advice is to make lots of observational sketches but also do a lot of doodling and not be too fussed about the outcome. Also you can try to emulate someone to learn techniques but dont compare yourself to other artists so much. I do this a lot and it only disheartens me.
I learned a long time ago to keep an open mind by engaging in new ideas and ways to be creative which enhances your drive and ability to create your future.
The keys to the kingdom - anyone who watches this and applies it to their life will see immediate gains and never look back at the fixed mindset again for the problems they care most about solving in their life 😊
It’s funny because even though I understand where this is coming from, many of these videos forget about nurodivergent people who might have a lot more trouble learning things than most. For me, I know I CAN read, but it’s really hard to read, and I feel stuck. I haven’t gotten better, even though I try. Same with being focused. I cannot focus on one thing for a longer period of time for the life of me. Therefore, it’s a lot harder for me to learn and grow. I try to listen and focus, it’s just a lot harder for me. There some cases that even though you might have a growth mindset, it’s a lot harder to grow. And also, when you keep failing and you aren’t getting better, it’s slot harder to keep a growth mindset all the time, because you know you are different, and that others are succeeding, but you are still at a 5th grade reading level. Anyway, I would love to see a growth mindset video talking about that stuff as well, because saying, “if you have a growth mindset you can do anything!” Isn’t very helpful, because everyone is different and there are some things that are a lot harder/impossible for some people to do. Also, not to mention trauma. Many people have a fixed mindset because of childhood trauma, such as parental abuse. I do respect these videos, and I see where they are coming from, but it’s not as black and white as these videos make it seem. There are a lot of factors that go into being in a fixed mindset that aren’t just social insecurities.
I also heavily agree. While watching this video, it really felt black and white. To simply somehow "change" your mindset is discouraging because it's not that easy as it seems. Sure, with effort, we can grow and become better, but the way the video showed it, I feel like there's a lack of depth of where a fixed mindset originates from.
I believe in a growth mindset because I was terrible in school. HIgh school I didn't pay attention I didn't go so I never applied myself. Now in college, wanting to learn, my grades r better. I have a 3.2 gpa and really want to finish top in my class. It's all about what you want!

Wow I always thought I was the only one on this planet with a growth mindset, and tell everyone that the 'smartest' kid at school only had does grades because he worked for it and I tried to explain to them that they can compete with him if they had just placed effort.
Bullshit people call me smart and I have great grades with no effort but other kids study and try hard and still do worse than me I may seem egotistical but I will not sugar coat it some of us learn faster and are better.
This video spoke to me. I use to feel like the little boy and still face that inner boy. I’m definitely breaking away from that and becoming more open-minded about what I do and how I do it. It’s always good to learn and try new thing. Living in fear of what people are going to say or think is all in the head. I want to grow not get stuck in a ditch and stuck in my ways. Fixed mindsets are a survival method for people who's parents/guardians are quick to punish for even small things like mistakes and accidents or even punish when they fail the first time trying something. It's not a healthy mindset, but in those environments it's what's needed to avoid pain

I accept that I maybe incorrect, but it does not matter how much money you have or awards you've won, but instead how you react to stress and dynamic situations.

Yes, I did. I think we will always learn and adapt, consiously or unconsiously. Obstacles and conflict will force us to adapt and both of them are inevitable in life.
Even if I would believe in a fixed mindset wouldn't make it so that I won't change. It's just that when I have a growth mindset I can choose where I focus my efforts to learn and adapt.
I think that learning and adapting don't always result in growth though. You can learn new bad habits for example. So that's where my mindset is slightly different from the growth mindset.
I have spent my entire adult life (and sooo much time in therapy) getting over the fixed mindset I had growing up. My fixed mindset made me see my failures as failures of my whole self, success was because I had talent no one else had, and wrecked havoc on my self-esteem. Now, life is a learning opportunity and I work to live with a growth mindset everyday. It's hard but a change is possible!

I’m glad you got out of it. I hope I don’t grow up with a fixed mindset. I know my family means well by calling me I’m smart,etc. But it’s caused me to think the way you thought. And I’m aware of it, but I don’t know how to stop. It’s gotten so bad I cry when I don’t understand things on the spot and it’s really taking a toll. I’ll just give up. Also have the issue with fixed mindset in most things. I only aquired a growth mindset in programming thanks to a very good teacher but I have fixed mindset hammered into my head the whole childhood. First 22 years of my life were filled with pure hate and rejection. I was unwanted by everyone and my whole existence cause anxiety to some people in my school. Just existing alone was a crime and some wanted to see me dieing. Fixing traumatic experiences and rejection during childhood is almost impossible. I hate 99.99% of all humans and this probably will never change.
At 50 years old, I’ve spent the past few years teaching myself to transform my old fear-based fixed mindset into an optimistic, empowering growth mindset, because I believe it will help me reach the potential I feel within. So far, so good.

I’m astonished that people feel positive about this particular explainer video, it’s so harmful and such a misrepresentation of growth mindset. My disabled daughter was shown this video at school and it left her in tears because the gist of the video is that kids who acknowledge barriers to learning or suffer with anxiety are bad and have the “wrong” mindset, when the reality of learning is far more nuanced. It brushes over the role adults have to play in creating safe environments where failure is allowed, putting all the emphasis on kids. It also draws a direct link between “wrong” mindset and unemployment without any reference to the role of trauma in how children respond to failure. It’s such a shame because growth mindset is a great tool, but this video is an aggressively ableist misrepresentation of the concept.

The ability for things such as planning, focused attention, and perseverance in the face of challenges are linked to physical areas in the brain (which in Einstein's case were larger than normal). Similarly, anyone can train their body and become toned and muscular, but you cannot change your basic body type.

However, let's not lose sight that the ideas described in this video are generalisations about the opposing ends of a continuum that we all inhabit. There will be exceptions, such as Einstein, but generally the vast majority of people either think they can grow to learn new skills or don't think they have it in them and thus don't really try. Some people will try in certain areas and not others (I have a brother who is good at languages, which many people consider hard, and so will approach learning a language like Anne, but is convinced he's terrible at DIY and inists he'll never be able to do it, so predictably won't try, like Jay).
Sprout's job is to make the concept come across as straightfowardly as possible. Your job is to make it trully useful by appling it reasonably in your life.

To me, a growth mindset was closely linked with learning to disregard others' opinions. I used to be so afraid of being unlikeable, unsuccessful that I avoided areas in which I wasn't sure I'd be talented. There were things I didn't try because "everyone" "knew" that they were hopeless or useless, and I was afraid of seeming arrogant by trying to prove them wrong. I had things I "knew" I was "good at"--mostly told to me by others--that I never even considered I might not be good at them, that I could improve at them, or that I might also be good or better at other things. Once I started seriously considering what *I* wanted and decided to seriously pursue it, I realized I was extremely capable in a variety of areas, and I could readily accomplish all my life goals. Once you convince yourself there is a way, the way becomes apparent.
How did you get the motivation to try?
@@wheatbread1606 I had things I wanted, I guess. As I became an adult and had more agency in my day to day life, I just gradually started trying. Success on the small scale encouraged me to keep trying for larger goals.

I feel that at some stages in my life I have had a fixed mindset. My mother always taught us that nothing beats a failure but a try. I have a growth mindset. I can take constructive criticism on an assignment. I love seeing others succeed and I am not insecure when they do succeed.
I like the growth mindset. It describes an open minded individual in which they are open for all suggestions that can help them grow. They are the person that has the opportunity to learn more and will be successful in the future.
It's honestly a balance, most if the times it is beneficial to be a growth mindset, but sometimes it is actually helpful to have a fixed mindset.

It demands a culture. One Growth Mindset can be far more challenging among many Fixed Mindsets + the factor of authority to make changes. So to make it successful you have to first calculate the balance factor, get the rest of the team on the same page including sponsors and then go for it. Just on a practical note to turn a theory to applications.
From teaching for five decades, this makes perfect sense. Can someone make a permanent switch to growth mindset? Possibly, but only if they are aware of their mindset and practice overcoming fixed mindset. Changing mindset is also a skill that can be practiced.

I think the key to a growth mindset is actually setting a goal to aim for and in the process the path forward is revealed by your aim and you'll know how to improve yourself
I never really thought about it much until after watching this video to realize that I, myself for a long time was set on a fixed mindset not allowing room for growth. I too was afraid of failure but now knowing that failing is a part of learning, I am quiet confident in my new upcoming challenges.

It's a great distinction I use a lot myself. One of the things I've noticed though is people tend to think of Growth vs Fixed as a personality trait, but my experience is most people have a Growth mindset about some things and a fixed mindset about others.

That is exactly what I was thinking! Jay's 'fixed' mindset comes from perfectly understandable worries that anyone might have experienced. Like good for you Anne but damn video, you really didn't have to attack Jay for having realistic worries.
As someone who also struggles with self-doubt, anxiety and depression, I really don't think this video was trying to somehow belittle neurodivergent people. It's not "just think like that and everything will be better". Of course not. You can't just get rid of this kind of mindset in one day. I think I wouldn't be able to be who I am today without going to therapy for year and a half (still going).
Failure is scary, but everything that matters is scary. You can't just get over your fears in one day, but it does help to try to overcome them (FOR ME, not giving any kind of advice). Having supportive friends helps a lot, and if, for example, your family is not, of course it's not that easy to overcome this.
What I take from this video - getting better takes effort. Getting over panic attacks and terrible depressive states took so much effort but I'm better now.
I have several workers at my job who I have to assess, give feedback and teach. I'm trying to be positive and supportive, try to give them positive feedback, and if they fail I'm spending a lot of time talking to them. It's so magical to see them getting more confidence, especially those people who have doubt in their minds.
I really hate this "tough love' approach, where people say "you don't deserve praise, you have to work for it". That's bullshit. A person who is surrounded by supportive people will get better at everything because they are encouraged. I've seen with my own eyes.
You can't just become happy and confident if people around belittle you.
So what I'm trying to say is that this video is not saying "just be better". They even mentioned how the guy takes everything personally. It's not what it says. It says that there is hope and you can get happier and yeah, it takes time and effort, but it's possible. There is nothing wrong with being anxious or nervous or neurodivergent. It's normal and it doesn't make you a lesser person.
What makes person shitty is when they judge people by traits like that instead of trying to help and support them.

Yeah my family was exactly the same, I remember I played football at 8 and wasnt very good at it, my grand father said I cannot learn it " you either gifted or you not", unfortunatly that stuck with me. I got diagnosed having aspergers which planted a seed of doubt in my mind very young which also moved my life in a hideous direction.
Thanks for this bigger picture perspective! I felt like I've struggled alone like a fish out of water with trying to build more constructive relationships with people like my coworkers and peers who don't seem to share in my levels of enthusiasm and ambitions for getting on the same page to get the job done with efficiency and consistency. I probably can write a book on coworkers shutting down and turning against me as if I am the one with a personal problem because I might have wanted them to help step up and tackle a project that can save all of us some trouble on down the road. Now I wish that videos like this would become more of a public service announcement on the biggest platforms you can imagine. Or at least mentioned openly at our daily goals meetings or our safety meetings at work that never covers any of the attitude and good sense techniques.

That's the thing. There is no scientifical term of "introvert-ness" or "extrovert-ness" . Almost allpeople are born with same body condition. The environment is responsible for our beliefs. However just think that, if they were in the same environment. Jay would fail and he would've stoped trying to opening up to poeple. On the other hand Anne would try again and try again. she would get confident more and more. So she'll be an extrovert. And about anxiety. Everyone has it. U just have to push harder, even the greatest leaders admit that they had anxiety issues but they've overcame it. For example Anthony Padilla he was so introverted that he had many anxiety attacks for just being around people. Now look at him , he's a famous RUclipsr and an extrovert. I'm not perfect also. But we all must push out limits and we'll succeed insha Allah 🌸

@@sprouts My channel has almost 200 subs and 84 hours of watch time although my next video completion progress has been pretty slow due to switching to another editing software and change of gears but no matter how slow it is to make videos, I do enjoy it. I know that my channel is way more low quality and not even close to other RUclipsrs' success out there but really, I realized that the main reason for doing this is not about the success but the inspiration I've been providing some people with my stories and experiences. Whoever you are, I don't know you personally but I can say based on what you said, I can say that you're one of the non-judgmental and open-minded people who is not fixated on tangible or external factors in order to learn from someone like me. Just because someone doesn't have a piece of paper as a credential, doesn't mean that person is not entitled to share personal experiences with the hope & intention to inspire others. Keep up with whatever it is that you're doing to improve mankind or improving your life even to a slight degree each day. I think there's a little of both in me. Sometimes there is a challenge and I'm afraid I'm going to fail. If I fail I now know that I can do it again and do it right. I can try no matter what happens because I can redo it over and over. I play the guitar and when I get stuck I don't quit. I rethink it and try again. I do like to take the easy way sometimes, but sometimes I take the hard way too. -4th grade student
I don't know if schools are trying to make creative minds or make some kind of grade A mass produced products fresh from the factory known as school
School has its ups and downs. There's benefit to the way it's done but it has some major drawbacks. I've found the best way to do it is to beat beating the system. What I mean by that is, people have to choose for themselves to figure out how to love learning. Really, you'll get out of it what you put into it. I've been using school to change my mindset recently; going through the motions not with the intent of the grade but with the intent of becoming better.

Perfectly happy with my fixed mindset :) I live for having fun, not to do some chores. I am not a product, I have nobody to sell myself to and I am comptent with my personnality so... No problems :). Glad with who I am, as I am, just enjoying my life as it is and myself as I am. I love to read with zen music in the background, petting my dog, solitude , tea, being in the nature and peace of mind. It is great to always be pursuing something that interests you. But this doesn't have to be your day job. Not everything that we passionately love can or should be used to make money.
@@EKWisner Hi, I wrote this comment a long time ago when I still believed in the meritocracy of our society. I have come to understand that our places of work are not healthy environments. We have political democracy but our workplaces are mini dictatorships where you don't get a say in what is made, how is it made and where is it made. Not only that we aren't paid the full value of our work and which is what constitutes profits (stolen labour) but that we have no say whatsoever in our places of work. This is a major contributor to understand what drives our passions. I think in a society where workers have complete control over their places of work (here work means both intellectual and manual labour, there is a technical difference but basically anyone who exchanges their time for money is a worker) will be able to not only pursue some passion that they like but create new avenues for themselves that are liberating and satisfying. Even a place where you flip burgers can be called home if you collectively own it and make decisions together. Does that make sense?
I would also ask that why should you be paid less if you love doing your job? I think artists and musicians are tricky to understand but why should any other job we like be low paying?

I am living proof of past actions. ”Fixed thinking” sought out employed, and in my own situation of misfortune, I used hard challenges to feel ok making mistakes and that cultivated a (want to) come use my service. Throughout my life. And As I matured. I took opportunities to intern at multiple shops, to improve upon the technique for which I used in my own later successful business dealings. Out of unfixed thinking a rather complex ”mind over matter” way of thinking was revealed. This to customers made me a power plant genius. I was certainly one of my most challenging obstacles over the years and throughout the joyful rebuilds, and time. I'd taken an ever closer step and deserve or earned credit for my builds. This I was rightfully proud of and confidence boomed high as the heavens. Every customer repeatedly used my services solely based on the fact that I didn't rely on a fixed mindset to fail. Failure to assemble correctly, make costly mistakes than repeat my work several times. Was an example of my due diligence, eagerly wanting to seek to outsource to help me truly understand where my mistakes we're. And their solutions. No matter how many, big or small, expensive or not. Projects returned by my name. Trust He would. ”I always receive, (in the end) a place to leave more complex mechanisms” Knowing self-assured, that no matter how much learning it took ”me” he would be a good reference to the company not only professionally but in reference to my emotional and subjective attitude where there is no place for a fixed mindset. I di switch from fixed to growth thanks to covid-19. it was during those months of isolation and solitude that the lightbulb clicked over my head. and i am delighted to bravely say that i am on the right track despite moments of waning will and swaying for short-lived comforts. i discovered my grit, eventually.
You can go from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. For the past 10 years have been working on moving away from the fixed to the growth. Doing so has helped me with my anxiety and fear of failure. It is still a work in process but I will succeed.
maybe this is a bit premature- but this video really changed the dynamic of how i view problems and live my life. i had been trying to figure out for days what it was that was holding me back from really learning all the information i had to learn (in medical school and beyond) and it was exactly this- the fixed mindset. to view challenges as new opportunities to figure something out, and to accept failure as part of the process is key. i think that we get so afraid of failing and feeling inadequate that it prevents us from doing the hard (and usually more meaningful) things. this video really solidified the concept and it has made me excited- rather than nervous- for all the new things i have yet to learn. This is tied to a person's upbringing and the older you get the harder it is for someone to accept that what they know or have been doing all along was wrong and that can make anyone sad or look bad. If you choose to cast off the shackles of pride and shame and choose humility and enlightenment you can grow and benefit.

I think there are few differences between people like Jay and Anne. As being said, Anne has some sort of extraversion and Jay has some features in introversion. If you have some such distinguishable features like taking all what happnening around you seriously and criticize things where yoy think like realist, you can simply remained Fixed-Minded and it is the truth you will never heard. I'm this kind of person who are very sensitive to critics because I was ashamed of my work done in school and after. But after a year or so, I changed my place of living, accepted new rules of living in new country and realized that.. Yes, you can fail, but what's the matter of it? Everyone fail, everybody will fail on the first place in activities thet have never tried before. Just try and do. Do you enjoy? Yes, you do. Are you learning? Yes, you are! Nevertheless, there eventually will be a momentum where you were mentally placed in your "old coat" of your thoughts and you will be returned in the coat of old Yourself.
I had to be medicated to actualize the power of my mind. I was able to read, watch, and listen to lots of self help materials. I reached out to people in the related fields of interest as myself and seek for mentorship. I now mentor young men with drug abuse/alcohol abuse/ mental disorders. The joy i receive from mentoring those young men is like no other joy ive experienced in life. To the readers out there, i believe in you! YES you can do it! Failure is normal. Fear is normal. It takes time for change to happen. Anger and frustration is part of the journey to self improvement. Yes, it sounds silly. People have called me crazy, but i dont mind it. I rather be crazy and successful rather than being a contempt loser.

I don't know about a "permanent switch" but I definitely believe we can build momentum in either direction/build our tendency towards one or the other.
I agree. I think like most binaries, there's a little bit of both in most of us. I am dedicated to the idea of lifelong learning, but I still hate admitting when I don't know something or am out of practice. And while I believe that effort matters far more than talent, I also notice myself wanting to help people find their path to success based on relatively superficial things that could makes it "easier" for them - for example looking at people's body types when advising them on careers.

This video, is not showing the complete idea. Basically when you are young this video is 100% useful, because explore is important, but once you find what you want, you use the fixed mindset even if you don't want. why? Because we don't have time for everything, which means, that you will avoid things that not really important in your situation or that simply you don't have enough time for it. So it is important to have a open growth mind set, but is important to be realistic, and CHOOSE what do you want to be good, practice makes perfect but practice needs time.

I believe that is possible to change mindset. For me it looks like the same as we were buiding new roads and started driving on them. And doing this would be pretty hard, especially at the beginning. But with time gets easier and there is a lot of joy then. And to be realistic, the fails also wait us on this way of learning of growth mindset, even in years, despite of being succesfull in that. So, as they said, just try again, fail again, fail better:)
I used to always believe I was a failure. I would try something new, fail and give up. About six years ago I took up fishing and guess what? My first year out I failed every single time I went. I was persistent however, stuck with it and refused to give up or in. Many a sunburned weeks later, I started hooking into fish. Fast forward six years, I am an excellent fisherwoman and proud to say at 35, Im attending college for the first time. I changed big time no more woe is me!

First, you must practice having a growth mindset to get through it. Then, draw things that are hard for you. After a long time of practicing and failing, you will be able to draw anything! :)
My advice is to make lots of observational sketches but also do a lot of doodling and not be too fussed about the outcome. Also you can try to emulate someone to learn techniques but dont compare yourself to other artists so much. I do this a lot and it only disheartens me.

It’s funny because even though I understand where this is coming from, many of these videos forget about nurodivergent people who might have a lot more trouble learning things than most. For me, I know I CAN read, but it’s really hard to read, and I feel stuck. I haven’t gotten better, even though I try. Same with being focused. I cannot focus on one thing for a longer period of time for the life of me. Therefore, it’s a lot harder for me to learn and grow. I try to listen and focus, it’s just a lot harder for me. There some cases that even though you might have a growth mindset, it’s a lot harder to grow. And also, when you keep failing and you aren’t getting better, it’s slot harder to keep a growth mindset all the time, because you know you are different, and that others are succeeding, but you are still at a 5th grade reading level.
Anyway, I would love to see a growth mindset video talking about that stuff as well, because saying, “if you have a growth mindset you can do anything!” Isn’t very helpful, because everyone is different and there are some things that are a lot harder/impossible for some people to do.
Also, not to mention trauma. Many people have a fixed mindset because of childhood trauma, such as parental abuse. I do respect these videos, and I see where they are coming from, but it’s not as black and white as these videos make it seem. There are a lot of factors that go into being in a fixed mindset that aren’t just social insecurities.
I also heavily agree. While watching this video, it really felt black and white. To simply somehow "change" your mindset is discouraging because it's not that easy as it seems. Sure, with effort, we can grow and become better, but the way the video showed it, I feel like there's a lack of depth of where a fixed mindset originates from.

I believe in a growth mindset because I was terrible in school. HIgh school I didn't pay attention I didn't go so I never applied myself. Now in college, wanting to learn, my grades r better. I have a 3.2 gpa and really want to finish top in my class. It's all about what you want!

You really can, as long as you have choices you can improve something; either externally (actions/habits) or internally (attitude/perspective). And those choices build up and compound making you stronger, skilled, flexible and extremely resilient. To the point that you'll embrace whatever comes your way, even pain.

Wow I always thought I was the only one on this planet with a growth mindset, and tell everyone that the 'smartest' kid at school only had does grades because he worked for it and I tried to explain to them that they can compete with him if they had just placed effort.
Bullshit people call me smart and I have great grades with no effort but other kids study and try hard and still do worse than me I may seem egotistical but I will not sugar coat it some of us learn faster and are better.
This video spoke to me. I use to feel like the little boy and still face that inner boy. I’m definitely breaking away from that and becoming more open-minded about what I do and how I do it. It’s always good to learn and try new thing. Living in fear of what people are going to say or think is all in the head. I want to grow not get stuck in a ditch and stuck in my ways. Growth is important.
