  • There has been a theory that for a long time Porsche was afraid to put the 911 engine in the Cayman. Well, in 2016 with the 981 Cayman GT4, they finally did it. But how does the Cayman GT car compare to the tried and true GT3? On this episode, we find out.

    I have driven a number of GT3s on track, and I own a 981 GT4. I love both, the power of the GT3 (any of them) is intoxicating, but on the road I think the GT4 is more forgiving, therefore you can drive it faster and you feel more confident. I was on a Porsche club rally where the leader was driving a 911T, second was a GT3 4.0 and I was third. On the straights the 911s we’re leaving me, but in the twisties, I caught them and easily kept up with them. I’d love a GT3, and maybe will invest in a 992 Touring package GT3 at some point, but until then I’ll continue cornering, and thinking that I could uptake that same corner faster the next time in my BLUKROK.

    The GT3 vs GT4 is a tough challenge; even if you ignore the price differential. I drove the GT3 and its an amazing car, particularly with the rear wheel steering when stomping on the throttle into a turn. But I chose the GT4 with PDK because I love the balance of the car and it still feels like a small track car to me (I loved that feeling with my 1988 911 track car). To me there is no winner. They are both magnificent. Thanks for this review EatSleepDrive.

      Yeah the GT3 is amazing and such a great engine and drive train, I just wish it wasn’t rear engined. As someone who grew up with front engined 50/50 balanced cars, I am a heavy trail brake. The GT3 doesn’t like that much, it’s better at the opposite like you mentioned, stomping on the gas on exit.

    I'm a huge GT4 fan. Not that I'd turn down a 911 of any kind, but that weight distribution of the mid engine is the sports car sweet spot. Always loved the 981 in Sapphire Blue with the club sport package.... of course, ot available in the U.S.

    Every review complains about the long 2nd gear in the Cayman. Porsche claims they couldn't fit a smaller 2nd gear in the Cayman. That's just a lie. I don't believe the mighty Porsche engineering department can retrofit an entire suspension but can't change a simple gear size.
    Same for fitting the 911 engine in the Cayman. Aftermarket modders can do it, so Porsche can too.
    Charge greater than GT3 prices if you must. Call it a 911 Cayman if you have to. Stop holding back the Cayman.

    I came from a 991 C4S with X51 kit in to my 981 GT4, ok straight line the 911 has more grunt and I do love the grip out of a corner.. But the GT4 is so much more fun, it may be down 45 bhp but on the twisties the GT4 would wipe the floor with the 4S. Would I swap for a GT3? Yes, Do I think the GT3 is worth double? No

      Drove a 991.2 Carrera T and a 981 GT4. The Carrera T feels just as special and much more comfortable on the street. The ground clearance is loads better! The GT4 feels like a serious track weapon that was made just compliant enough to be streetable. I didn't like the Carrera T farts on downshift though (but that's personal). You can't go wrong either way. But I chose the GT4 because I have a daily. I wouldn't choose the Carrera T if it's not your daily or plan on long road trips. Also if your spouse does not want to drive a manual I would just get the Carrera.
      (I ended up buying a 981 GT4 btw, my daily is a B9 S4)

    • @KosmicHRTRacingTeam
      @KosmicHRTRacingTeam 3 года назад +2

      The GT4 has slightly more modern feel interior and a bit more refined. Steering on both is incredible. The suspension on 997.1S PASM is slightly softer (id recommend at least going to Eibachs pro kit). The motor on the GT4 is the same motor as the 997.2S (slightly more than .1). Shifting is little shorter on GT4, but you can throw a 997 gt3 shifter on any 997 and it’s an easy upgrade or you can do like I did and buy the Numeric, which is incredible. Also upgraded my steering wheel to a GT3RS wheel, which I like better than the 997 sport wheel. In my opinion the .1S sounds better but the .2 is a better engine and less potential issues/problems with IMS, etc. the GT4 is slightly easier to drive fast, but to be honest, I like the rear engine feel of a 911 and it just takes practice to get it figured out. The GT4 has much much better tires (Cup vs PS2 and much more modern). I’ve never been a huge Cayman fan, but I really like the GT4. At the same time, I am a little mixed about calling it a True GT car. It has the 7.2 engine and the 997 is really similar is size. I still feel like the 997.1 and .2 are incredible values.

    I'm suck on the smaller 911's and have driven tight B-roads from the start. I know the GT4 would fit the bill (fun factor) as every time a drive a 981 my only complaint is lack of power. If the opportunity presents itself I would purchase a GT4. Keep in mind the fleet would still have to maintain a 911.

    Or get a GT3 manual, if I want a smaller car I would probably get a 997.2 gt3 over the new GT4, the older GT3 engineer doesn’t rev as high but it’s a proper Mezgar motor with 8400rpm redline and better gearing for the manual trans. I love how the GT4 and especially the spyder looked but I have a feeling that the gearing will drive me insane

    It's hard to appreciate these cars on a road where clearly driving much more rapidly than 60 mph becomes not only illegal but irresponsible. It's a shame in such a big country not to find faster roads on which to film where let's be honest, you can shift (with meaning) in 3rd & 4th gear. Accelerating in a 45 mph zone in anything but 1st & 2nd gear is almost an irrelevance. These cars truly come alive closer to the limit of traction and when song (above 4,000 rpm). I'm afraid whilst they are wonderful when driven slow or even if static, driving them at 6/10ths is somewhat of a disservice. In that respect your GT4 is more than enough car (& a wonderful choice I might add - Kudos to you) - I just wonder when the GT3 get's it's legs fully stretched (hopefully on a track somewhere).

Yes, the GT4 is easier to drive than the 3 in almost every way, but it’s also what makes it a bit less “special”, imho

  • @sixpotshot

    I am not sure how many actually know that Caymans and Boxtsters (gen 981 at least) have actually bigger wheelbases than 911s (gen 991 at least)? They are inherently more stable at speed because of that and their engine location as well. I can’t deny I fancy any GT3 engine but the outstanding feature of the GT4 is that is one of those cars where there is NO weak link. The car is one of those cars without any weaknesses. It is the WHOLE car. There is not a single component that outshines the other (and here I recall my Z4 M Coupe - a racing engine under the bonet. But its chassis would leave me wanting every single time. I sold it and have never regretted it) The Cayman GT4 is a total and absolute immersion of solidity and of togetherness like a 911 can only dream of. And not even the long gears of its gearbox can detract from that as they have on its own benefits that no one talks about.

    • @KosmicHRTRacingTeam
      @KosmicHRTRacingTeam 3 года назад

      A long wheelbase is what you are basing the 911 vs GT4 argument on? Interesting (don’t look now but the 991.1S with street tires absolutely smokes the GT4 running cup tires on pretty much ever circuit). I guess if wheelbase is your thing, porsche had to go with 4 wheel steering to make the 991 GT3 cars “feel” more nimble like the 997 cars. Some people like that, others not so much. But the newer gt3 cars are unique in that they can calibrate the steering to feel like it has a longer wheelbase at higher speeds and a shorter wheelbase at slower speeds (tighter corners). Frankly i couldn’t give AF and just give me the 997.2 GT3RS and let me drive it how it’s meant to be driven.
