Ready to visit Gornergrat?! (We're ready to go back again!) Add it to your itinerary using our 3-Day Guide to Zermatt, Switzerland: aplinsinthealps.com/guides/3-day-guide-to-zermatt-switzerland/
7:27 ok. I have been watching your videos for more than a year and last month I finally managed to fly 24 hours from land down under to Switzerland. And this...this slice of happiness is so worth it. The hosts were amazing - our kids were happy and swiss lager was frothy and again this slice of heaven in Zermatt is a must eat. I really wanted to spend my lunch money here. Thanks Jana and Brett. Your guidance and tips made all the difference. For anyone planning to take the gornergrat just make sure you have a pit stop at Alphitta and let Dave and Tanja look after you.
Thank you guys so much for this channel. It has been so helpful in planning our trip to Switzerland. We’re in zermatt right now after having spent several days in Interlaken. We keep going back to your videos to figure out our days’ adventures
Thank you for this terrific information! I love the Bonus features too- especially that Matterhorn app! Who knew making a reservation will be so easy now! THANK YOU once again- you guys are the BEST!!
Perfect timing as always! We’ll be in Zermatt for a good chunk of a day only (😢) in August on our way to Lausanne from Lake Lugano via bus (and train), but this will be super helpful. You literally just showed me what I had planned to do in Zermatt is most definitely doable! As always, THANK YOU!
Thank you for your youtube and other resources (we bought the 1 week guide to the Jungfrau region) which were very helpful on our recent Swiss trip! We stayed 3 days in Zermatt as well, and walked down from Rotenboden into Zermatt on 17 June. Lots of snow on the paths to Riffelberg and many people were ill prepared. On track some snow still went waist deep. Riffelsea was frozen. Someone standing on it found the ice wasn't that thick and got rather wet! People were expecting sheep in conditions with snow everywhere! Just apply some due diligence whatever the time of year and especially outside of July and August. And you should have as good a walk down as we had. The food at Riffelberg was definitely earned!
Thanks for sharing your recent experience! We’ve had so much rain and snow in June so it’s not surprising to read the trails still had snow. Glad you were prepared and were rewarded with some tasty food!
Great video - I went up there in the summer of 1999 with my uncle and aunt on a day trip from Saas Fee - I wish I’d seen the sheep then? How cute are they? 😆 The landscape up there feels like you are on the moon doesn’t it? It reminds me of the Lünarsee just over the border in Austria.
How difficult would it be to try and get Sunnegga/Rothorn in on the same day as Cornergratt, if I wanted to do the 5 lake hike, mountain cart, trottibike, train to cornergratt and then some hiking around Cornergratt? I'm assuming that it would be smart to get the Peak Pass for this right?
Great question! We personally think these are worth giving their own days to really explore. But if you're committed to a full day where you'll have to skip a few things, it could be done. We recommend doing Sunnega-Rothorn first, since the train to Gornergrat runs much later. Hope this helps!
Hi, if I booked the one-way ticket from Zermatt to Gornergrat but got off halfway at Rotenboden, do I need to buy another train ticket from Rotenboden to Gornergrat?🤔
Hi there! No need for an extra ticket! As long as you don't back-track or double-up on any sections you can stop halfway and then continue the rest of your journey the same day on the one ticket.
Hi there! They are not always in that location. In fact, we were just there this past weekend and they were near the Riffelalp train station. Hope you get to see them!!
Perfect timing! I just purchased your new Zermatt travel guide and Lucerne this morning! And your transportation guide is also amazing. I am just still struggling to figure out the best way to get from Milan to Zermatt using the glacier express. I’m assuming we would need to travel from Milan to St Moritz… and then take the express from there???? And we can use the half fare card to purchase that ticket??? Planning a Switzerland trip is tricky! Thank you for all of your help!
Woohoo, so glad you snagged our new Zermatt Guide! And you're right that you'd need to travel from Milan to St. Moritz to hop on the Glacier Express. (Note that it only departs St. Moritz in the morning, so you'd probably have to travel from Milan and do an overnight in St. Moritz) The Half Fare Card will work on the Glacier Express tickets as well. Sounds like a super fun trip to Italy and Switzerland!!!
Your videos are so helpful! Just wondering whether it is doable to do Matterhorn and Gornergrat AND do a hike (1-2 hrs) somewhere half way in one day... or should we do two separate days.... Or just choose..... A peak pass is valid for only one day...gets more expensive for 2 days.... hence my question. Thanks!
If you want to do these two excursions in the same day, look into the Peak2Peak Ticket. It's possible to include a hike...if you want to do this, we suggest going to Glacier Paradise in the morning and Gornergrat in the afternoon. Enjoy!
Usually they're only there between June and September. And depending on the snow conditions, the trail may not be open in May. Check the Gornergrat website for updates!
Just curoius as it looks like there are multiple trails from Riffelsee lake t Riffelberg....did you take trail 21 which show is as Riffelseeweb (on the zermatt map) or did you follow 15B which connects to 23 to Riffelberg. (so confusing as there are so many options :-)
We actually took a combo of both since we diverted to see the sheep along the way! And we recommend taking whichever trail passes by where the sheep are that day 😊🐑
Can you recommend me which places to visit, dad and I will visit Switzerland in May with car, and all we care about are green hills and mountains, and lakes. So what are best places to visit? We don't care about cities.
Hi. Great video. May i seek your help on buying train ticket from zermatt to gornergrat? i tried to buy the train ticket via sbb app, found that the route is slightly different (missing Legendar) from what i saw in Gornergrat railway website. just wondering is it the same train if i buy from sbb app.
Hi there! We bought our tickets using the SBB app and they worked great. Not every train departure stops at Legendär, so that might be why it's not showing up. Hope that helps!
Hi , did u shoot this video in march ? If not which month? Am planning to visit zermatt on mar 26th . I was wondering if i could see some greenery in march.. pls suggest me some places whr we can see the green lush of Switzerland in march . TIA ❤❤
This was filmed in August. Depending on snow, you can see some green alps in the Jungfrau Region. Although Zermatt tends to be browner and rockier all year lonng.
We filmed here in August! Not sure when the sheep go up into the mountains, but it probably depends on the weather. You can check the live map online to see where they are!
@@AplinsintheAlps Thanks. I don’t think they’re out on the mountain until mid June or even July. I have been emailing the barns to see if there’s any way we can see them the day we are there. Hopefully it all works out!
Hi..we are going to zermatt this December..our 1st time really..we decided not to skii as i have zero knowledge on skiing..we do plan to take the cable car but dont know where to start?we plan to take a day tour via train..is that a good idea?may i ask for ur opinion?
You can see marmots at the free Wild Parks in Interlaken and Brienz, or at the Stanserhorn near Lucerne. But we aren't sure where they'd be in Zermatt (we haven't seen them there)!
This video just came right in time as we are on our way to 🇨🇭 at the end of the month. You guys justified why I should pay CHF121 (train+zoom) for this experience LOL I am debating doing this over the James bond brunch, now you gave me more reason to do both HAHA If you guys were to choose, will you still pick Schilthorn? Thanks for all the wonderful contents ❤
Ooh tough question! Comparing the two (and assuming the weather would be perfect in both places), we'd choose Gornergrat over the Schilthorn. The views are just more unique (even though we still love the Schilthorn)!
It really depends on why you're going! It's a bit between the Winter and Spring seasons, but prices should be a bit cheaper than during peak of Winter or Summer!
Eh, maybe. But by public transport, it's 3 hours one-way. So that's a really long day to travel and hike and explore! In our opinion, we just recommend spending a few nights in Zermatt if you want to do this.
It’s a pretty standard hike, in our opinion. But if we were with a baby, we’d recommend riding down to Rotenboden on the train and then hiking from there to Riffelberg!
I am seriously questioning while typing this as how I can thank you enough. I have been following you for sometime and finally we were able to visit switzerland. We decided to to skip 2 stops down and decided to walk/trek/stumble down to Alphitta. And this was so worth it- the hosts were awesome, and the tiramisu and apple cake were simply divine. Thanks again for the recommendation.
A historic area and the glaciers are amazing, but there are too many gondolas for my taste. If you want a remote feel on your Swiss hikes, go elsewhere.

WOW! This is so helpful as Zermatt is one of the locations that is time consuming. This Guide was really helpful.

First video I've found that shows the trails down from Gornergrat to track the sheep - thank you! So helpful :)
You’re so welcome! It’s worth the walk down to see the sheep, in our opinion! 🐑🙂
Incredible mountain 🏔️ views, it's stunning ❤😍

During summer where you can find more snow titlis or Gornergrat?
Gornergrat doesn't often have snow in summer, but Titlis does!

Hi which month did you film this guide? Thanks!
Hi! We filmed this video in August!
Such a great video! Just curious, will I be able to meet the sheep on may? I will be visitting Zermat beginning of May.
Usually they're only there between June and September. And depending on the snow conditions, the trail may not be open in May. Check the Gornergrat website for updates!
Hey Jana+Brett. Where do I purchase the pass from Eigergletscher to Jungfraujoch?
Hi Robyn! The easiest way is to buy it on the SBB mobile app!!
Is it good time to go in April last week and get your enjoy mountain activities and snow in mountains
@jana what backpack do you prefer? I don't one too large for a small back so what are your recommendations?
I personally use a Deuter biking backpack because it’s slim, expandable, and small enough to fit my waist!
