First, I want to thank you guys for your videos. They were super helpful in planning our trip. Now, having just returned from Switzerland with Zermatt as our last stop, I have a few things to say. One, the hiking is top-notch, that's for sure, and the views on a sunny day are incredible, however...Zermatt is billed as a car free town. Unfortunately, there are so many mountain bikers and E-taxis zipping around, its actually dangerous to be a pedestrian on their narrow streets. My wife who is half-deaf was almost killed several times. There's also a ton of construction going on, with cranes marring the village's skyline. Lastly, Zermatt is mostly hotels. While we were there in shoulder season and the crowds weren't so bad, I can't imagine this village at peak capacity; it would be a nightmare. On the plus side, Golden India restaurant near the Gornergrat Express station is amazing! The more you know...

14:39 hi!! Why don’t you recommend doing Matterhorn Glacier Paradise and Gornergrat on the same day? I’m going to Switzerland this summer and was planning on doing a day trip to Zermatt from Bern and buying the Peak2Peak pass. Also, we wanted to see the Riffelsee lake on the way up to or on the way down from Gornergrat.

    • @AplinsintheAlps

Great question! We have lots of thoughts on this, but the simplest is that we 100% recommend Gornergrat but would probably recommend going somewhere else besides Glacier Paradise. That’s just our opinion, so of course you can do both with the Peak2Peak Pass if you want to!

We’re definitely not native speakers 🙃 But we do our best to pronounce places like the locals do!

@@AplinsintheAlps Sure you're not but at least get the name of the town of the video right. We won't expect you to pronounce all the neighbourhood cities perfectly. Tsermatt is not Zhermatt. 😉

So what is the correct pronunciation. I also taught Applied Phonology for ESL Pronunciation and retired from lecturing at university in 2015 after 34 years. You can use an approximation of IPA. I don’t use it myself as I have differences with the International Phonetic Association at Cambridge. Also can you say what it means derived from native Swiss dialect and it’s relation to the name Matterhorn? This has reference to Ancient Rome. BTW only three mountains use “ the” as in the Matterhorn , The Eiger, The Youngfrau. What are the meanings of these names? I happen to know. All other mountains in English begin with “ Mount….” as in Mount Everest, Mount Shasta, Mount Fuji. Why then do these Alps mountains begin with “ the”? There is a historical answer. And yes I used “ Alps” as a plural adjective and “ a” before “ historical” because these are correct. Now it’s your turn.

Going to Switzerland first two weeks of September. Just starting the planning. Your videos are extremely helpful. In fact I am only watching yours. Original plan is arrive from U.S. in Zurich and take train to Bern right after landing (I know, long day!). Two nights in Bern, then two in Zermatt, two in Grindelwald, two Lucerne & 1 in Zurich before we fly out. Love the videos but everytime I watch one I start thinking of changing the trip up. Was going to rent a car but now decided to go everywhere by train. If it matters, while we're in fairly good shape (especially my wife) still I am 70 & my wife is 63. Does this itinerary sound reasonable?

Hi there! This sounds great! Bern is only about an hour or so from the Zürich airport, so not a problem at all to go ahead and get there.
Depending on how early your flight is, you could consider spending your last night in Lucerne as well so that you don't have to change locations. But we also understand how nice it can be to just wake up knowing you're already at the airport where you need to be!

Gotcha, we totally understand! Trips to these places can be expensive, for sure. But for many people, they are once in a lifetime bucket list opportunities, and totally worth the investment. We're sorry it didn't feel worth the cost to you!
