Thank you so much for posting this video! I own the same machine but have not used it in two decades. It has been kept in my climate controlled studio, however. I recently received a DAT tape and tried to fire up the machine, only to receive the same ERROR 01. Your video provided the information I needed to gain the confidence that I might be able to fix the problem. I am happy to say that as of today, Saturday, February 17, 2024, my Tascam DA-30 MKII DAT machine is back in working order and playing DATs once again. Thanks so much!!

Thanks for positing this. A really easy fix. Got a machine that arrived today with the same issue. Even for someone not really au fait with repairs, this is a simple job that I'm confident i can do. Off to order the little belt.

Taking the picture at 11:05 the right group of 4 holes are as follows: from left to right first hole is an anchor post for the cassette. If you stick tape on it the cassette won't be in a correct position to be detected by the deck. second is the detection hole for a DDS2 120m tape, third is for the DDS1 90m tape and the fourth is open together with the second one for DDS3 120m tapes. All these DDS tapes do work together with the two Tascam DA-30 MK I that I have by permanently shorting the detection switch of hole 2.
Oh and cutting the jumper wire W402 on the digital board de-activates SMCS. That's for the Mark I don't know it there is an option for Mark II

Much thanks for posting this very informative video!
I own the same machine and had not used it in at least ten years. I am the original owner. When I recently took it out to try, it exhibited identical issues and threw code “01”. I have only removed the top cover to inspect my machine, seeing two drive belts along the left-hand side as you face the front. Those two are seemingly fine. What I have not inspected are both the notched belt and that 10 mm belt, which are only visible once the mechanism is removed, per your demonstration. I am almost certain that the loading issue I am experiencing is identical to the procedure in your upload. I will attempt to follow your example in the hope that the loading mechanism will once again operate properly.
Where did you purchase the 10 mm belt? Do you think that I might find an identical belt in a well stocked hardware store? I have found drive belts for various CD tray mechanisms in such places. I am here in Berkeley, Ca.
    Wishing you the best!
    Cheers!

Thank you for your positive comment!
The belt I used was 10mm diameter, 1.0mm square section. With hindsight, I probably should have used a slightly thicker 1.2mm belt. I purchased the belt from an eBay seller in the UK who I have used before, and their belts seem to be good quality (I'll add a links in the video description), but if you can find a belt supplier locally then that would be ideal. In fact, a suitably-sized O-ring would probably work just as well in that application.
That was the only belt that had failed in my deck, which is lucky because the other belts looked as though they may be quite difficult to change. I expect they will need replacing at some point, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it!
Good luck with your machine - they do seem to be nice decks!

Excellent reply. I just picked up some “O” rings from our local hardware supplier in various diameters. Surely, one should do. I am hoping that this change will elicit proper repair! I used this deck for quite a few live recordings of choral and chamber music with great results. Once I acquired two Alesis Masterlink ML-9600 decks, the Tascam was shelved. I did manage to successfully transfer a good number of my DATs to the Masterlink decks a little over ten years ago. That was the last time I attempted to operate my Tascam. Fingers crossed!

Thank you for this Video! but, I have a question, maybe you can help me?
I have a TASCAM DA40 and the capstan timing belt was torn. After I reinserted it, the recorder no longer winds and shows on the display: TAPE CUT??? Is it possible that you have to pay attention to the markings when inserting the new belt? like a timing chain in a car? I would be very happy about an answer, thank you very much. ☺

I'm not familiar with the DA-40, but it seems highly unlikely that the capstan belt would be critical for timing. I'm not sure why a lack of reel movement would cause the deck to conclude that the tape has been cut, but I would check that the reel idler is free to swing from side to side and not gummed up with old lubricant, as that seems to be a fairly common problem.

@@timf-tinkering Many thanks for the quick response!
Yes, I have already researched further and it could actually be due to stiff parts... I will completely disassemble the drive and clean it. I'll let you know what the result is.
What lubricant would you recommend when I put it together? Thank you and best regards!

Do you have a model number for this belt, I’m having the same issue, and can’t find the same one you found. Thanks

Details of the belt are in the video description. The belt I used is 10mm diameter, 1.0mm square section, but I think a slightly thicker 1.2mm square belt would have been better. An o-ring would probably work just as well.

I use DDS tapes in my DA-30 mkii all the time. Try just covering the DDS hole - you laid the tape over 4 holes. (The DDS, DDS-2, the cleaning tape and the tape positioning hole ! ) You have to use a tiny piece of tape.
