This deck works, but makes a horrible rattling noise when lacing and unlacing. Here's how we fix it. I particularly like the aesthetics of these machines. Taking the picture at 11:05 the right group of 4 holes are as follows: from left to right first hole is an anchor post for the cassette. If you stick tape on it the cassette won't be in a correct position to be detected by the deck. second is the detection hole for a DDS2 120m tape, third is for the DDS1 90m tape and the fourth is open together with the second one for DDS3 120m tapes. All these DDS tapes do work together with the two Tascam DA-30 MK I that I have by permanently shorting the detection switch of hole 2. Oh and cutting the jumper wire W402 on the digital board de-activates SMCS. That's for the Mark I don't know it there is an option for Mark II

    There were also localised versions of these recorders with the same EP function for different markets. As far as I know, there were also MESECAM EP (in this mode the amount of SECAM-fire is enormous, I've tried recording. In addition, sometimes vertical yellow-green moiré appears, it depends on the cassette itself. On 2-head tape recorders everything is very, very bad), and possibly SECAM EP, in the SECAM region tape recorders I'm trying to find, they were sold presumably only in France and Switzerland (e.g. NV-HV60F). Also there was a similar feature for 525-line regions, somewhere also since 2000 introduced VP speed (like 4 or 5 times slower than standard), it worked in NTSC and obviously should work also in PAL-M (for example in NV-HV60BR model). The quality of all these slow-speed recordings depends very much on the wear and tear of the VCR mechanism, and they don't play very well on other similar recorders...

    • @timf-tinkering
      @timf-tinkering Месяц назад

      That's interesting. I did wonder if SECAM EP existed. If you look in the user manual for the JVC HR-S9850, it says "it is not possible to select EP mode if COLOUR SYSTEM is set to MESECAM" which I assumed meant that MESECAM EP was not possible, but maybe Panasonic supported it.

    • @s1tv_ykt
      @s1tv_ykt Месяц назад

      @@timf-tinkering all JVC that i used can't record MESECAM / SECAM in EP. In the instructions for French models it is even separately stated that you can not record SECAM in LP/EP, so Panasonic probably has the most loyal attitude to SECAM. Sharp, by the way, also cannot record MESECAM/SECAM EP

    Back in the 80s and 99s I used to work in merchant banking in the city of London, all trader phone (and other voice circuits) were continuously recorded during the working day, so there were many entire racks filled with this sort of recorder, and although I never came across these particular units, devices using vhs tape were common. It was someone’s job to change the tapes daily on these dozens of recorders. As noted elsewhere in the comments, that’s an RJ21 on the back, up to 25 x balanced 600 ohm line level feeds per connector, using a 25 twisted pair cable. Of course these machines are all ancient history with hard disk recording rapidly becoming the norm, the real advantage of which was not the end of swapping and storing a months worth of tapes, but same day playback, rather than having to wait for swapsies to recover the wanted tape.

  • @1lennetje

    Interesting experiment! Regarding the S/PDIF input the following. The Copy Prohibit flag is always high when this input is used. A digital copy is only possible with a source that allows digital copying. The digital output of a consumer CD player always has that flag high. The digital output of the CD player can be modified. But it is also possible to modify the digital input of the 601, allowing unlimited digital copying. I once did that to one of my 601s and it worked fine. It is recommended to connect the video transmitter to the Copy output of the 601. Then the best result is obtained. When a tape without copy prohibition is played and the Copy key is pressed, a stable and error-corrected video signal is presented to the copy output.

      @@timf-tinkering That is incredibly slow. I'm amazed anything could be reproduced at that speed. I got a VHS to record the entire medium wave band, with head switch clicks, and Hi Fi sound, multiplexed radio , demultiplexed on replay. I got six hours out of that, but with the clicks. I told Sony how to do it, six months later the HiFi VHS came out...

    What did you accomplish by spraying the back side of the flywheels? The shaft bushings are underneath on the opposite side.

      @@Capturing-Memories Absolutely nothing. The bearings felt smooth and free so I didn’t see any point in trying to do anything to them, and the Hall effect position sensors were the only other thing I could see to clean. I didn’t expect that to have any effect, and it apparently didn’t.

      @@timf-tinkering My point was, spraying the top of the flywheel does nothing, the shaft is affixed to the flywheel.

    I can see the pinch wheel would be easy to remove and clean

    Its a shame Teac didn't develop further in this unit in to like 10 track stereo recorder that could be used as a home studio recording system or even 20 track like you mentioned. instead we had only four or eight track availability. To use at the time video tape was just excellent idea witch was available globally everywhere all sizes and types of it including High end tapes like mastering types. Tape Speed of the unit could be much higher with different speed variety you could choose from for different quality or tape types. Anyway i just fought to make a point here cos this TEAC seems very interesting little unit that got stuck only to record low quality voice . Thank you for showing and explaining, must say never seen it before 🙂

      Yes, I agree, they could have developed this idea into a low-cost multi-track recorder for home studios.

    Hi Tim, very interested device! I notice it requires the 3-hour "T-180" SVHS tape to achieve the full 24-hour recording. I wanted to contact you about the Sony RTE-3000 realtime Mpeg-1 encoder, but I don't see any contact information on your channel page.

    The Alesis ADAT in early 1992, recorded 8 tracks of digital audio onto a VHS tape/cassette. This is an interesting machine, never seen one before so many thanks for the fascinating video.

    why 10/20 tracks? Wouldn't mono or perhaps 2 tracks be sufficient?

      It is useful for recording multiple (phone) conversations simultaneously. Or for radio broadcasters recording their Logs of multiple programs on just one cassette.
