    Mikko, thank so much for being my inspiration. At 40 years of age I took on digital art as a hobby after watching one of your videos. I don’t think I will be as good as you with your seemingly random paint strokes that eventually become works of art, but I am having so much fun! You are such a gifted artist. Thank you so much for sharing your art with us.

    What a great idea for an art challenge! You have inspired me to try this for my own art and I'm already getting a bunch of ideas from references I've taken from different countries. It would be cool to blend them together and see what I can come up with. Also a great way to stretch your creativity and get you thinking outside of the box. 😊

    Thank you so much for your hard work and beautiful paintings. I went from starting 3 to 4 different paintings without finishing them to taking your advice and always finishing the piece (with no regrets) i almost gave up on digital art until i started watching your videos. Now i have a new respect and love for concept/ fantasy art. plus a new respect for myself as an artist. that's because of you!!!!

    • @angrymikko
      @angrymikko  2 года назад +1

      I’m really happy especially about you finding the respect for yourself and your art. Finishing every painting is a real game changer.
      Every piece to me feels at some point like it’s proof of how bad I am. However I’ve gone through that phase so many times that I know it always goes away once you get over the hard part in any painting.
      In digital medium you can’t really “ruin” a piece like you can with ink for example so every piece is either just unfinished or finished.
      Living with access to your creativity is also a better life so I’m super glad you didn’t give up on it. 🐻💕

    This is one of the best videos that I have seen about how to use reference! Super clear and interesting explanations and demonstration. I feel like when I first came to art school I (and plenty of other students) really struggled with how to use reference without just copying straight from the image. I didn't quite figure it out until my junior year but this video/your channel would have saved me a lot of suffering haha

    • @angrymikko
      @angrymikko  2 года назад +1

      I really don’t recommend Pinterest for reference. It’s full of illustrations and photographs where the composition and colours are already locked and missing editing room. On top of that it’s a really small pool meaning that in just a few clicks you always end up with the same pictures. Art in general is not a good reference point for creating new ideas because at least for me it tends to close more doors than it opens. For stuff like this it wouldn’t make sense to rely on internet when I had the opportunity to gather the materials on my own.

    This is so wonderful! I'm curious to know: how long did you spend on the painting part of it?

    • @angrymikko
      @angrymikko  2 года назад +8

      About 2 weeks of work for all parts. Sketch livestream is an hour long then the 3d block in was about an hour as well. On the last day I had another livestream about painting details and then the colour edit in
      Photoshop took about one day as well. PS crashed during the edit so there was a big part of the edit that I had to do twice.
      I LOVE the colour editing so it felt more like a treat than punishment. If I could just edit art and photos as a job I’d be pretty content with that life. Colour editing these videos is super fun too.

    • @angrymikko
      @angrymikko  2 года назад +1

      I can’t stress enough how important it is to learn colour editing. When you can really crush it in the edit it feels so ******* awesome. I have a few colours editing livestreams in my membership but it’s honestly something I should do more often in the future. I recently learned how to display the hotkey inputs on screen and it’s something that hopefully can help me make that process easier to learn.
      When it comes to actual painting. “Finished Touch” could mean any number of things. Sometimes it’s knowing when to stop, deleting unnecessary details or removing entire areas that you already have painted. It’s all relative to what enhances the point of visual impact in the piece and as such it’s always based on the context.
      When it comes to this one it was definitely the colour edit. I had so much editing room in the way this was painted that it wasn’t that difficult to get through either.
      It’s easy to paint yourself into a corner and leaving editing room for colour requires restraint from beginning to almost the last hours. However if any area isn’t ruined by a blown out colour choice it’s so rewarding to push a painting like that to it’s limit in the edit. I could just do that as a job and I’d still like it just as much as painting itself.

    • @angrymikko

      New iPads are amazing 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’m working pretty close to the limit which I definitely never recommend for beginners. Knowing how many layers you need for the editing phase of a painting is crucial when deciding your canvas size. I recommend having a good bit of extra leeway with the number of layers in most cases.

      Depends on the illustration. For this one that’s the path. The colour edit happens in Photoshop and that was about a day of work. Edits can also be done on the ipad but it’s just so much faster on pc that I use that in most of my illustrations.

      I’ve heard so many art tubers repeat this “your art should look finished at every step” and I couldn’t imagine a worse mindset to get started. Especially for those who might be going through an art block or feel discouraged because of how the piece looks in the beginning.
      You can’t build a house on nothing and even the corner stones are going to be just a scattered rubble of boulders before they’re worked into the right shape and position. Some of my favourite pieces have been total disasters until they were finished so I say embrace the mess. It’s not a sign of anything else than the painting being unfinished.
      No point adding any extra pressure to the process. Art will always be scary enough anyway.

    • @angrymikko
      @angrymikko  2 года назад +1

      I treat the scans in Photoshop first because the parts need to be glued digitally and I get to edit the lines depending on what the look of the piece is. Here I mostly left the lines as they are though because the pencil texture just happens to fit with the brush grain.
      Once the lines are ready and separated from the background I send the whole thing into procreate along with the shadow pass from that 3d block in. The shadows get painted over pretty quickly completely but they often help the lighting stay consistent without a lot of extra effort.
